We investigate Lemaître-Tolman-Bondi (LTB) models, whose early time evolution and bang time are homogeneous and the distance - redshift relation and local Hubble parameter are inherited from the $Λ$CDM model. We show that the obtained LTB models and the $Λ$CDM model predict different relative local expansion rates and that the Hubble functions of the models diverge increasingly with redshift. The LTB models show tension between low redshift baryon acoustic oscillation and supernova observations and including Lyman-$α$ forest or cosmic microwave background observations only accentuates the better fit of the $Λ$CDM model compared to the LTB model. The result indicates that additional degrees of freedom are needed to explain the observations, for example by renouncing spherical symmetry, homogeneous bang time, negligible effects of pressure, or the early time homogeneity assumption.
We undertake a non-perturbative study of the evolution of the "gravitational entropy" proposed by Clifton, Ellis and Tavakol (CET) on local expanding cosmic CDM voids of $\sim 50-100$ Mpc size described as spherical under-dense regions with negative spatial curvature, whose dynamics is determined by Lemaitre-Tolman-Bondi (LTB) dust models asymptotic to three different types of FLRW background: $Λ$CDM, Einstein de Sitter and "open" FLRW with $Λ=0$ and negative spatial curvature. By assuming generic nearly spatially flat and linear initial conditions at the last scattering time, we examine analy…
We study the statistics of various large-scale structure tracers in gravity-only cosmological simulations including baryons and cold dark matter (CDM) initialized with two different transfer functions, and simulated as two distinct fluids. This allows us to study the impact of baryon-CDM relative perturbations on these statistics. In particular, we focus on the statistics of cosmic voids, as well as on the matter and halo real-space 2-point correlation function and baryon acoustic oscillations (BAO) peak. We find that the void size function is affected at the 1-2% level at maximum, and that th…
We extract void catalogs from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey Data Release 16 (SDSS DR16) survey and also from the Millennium simulation. We focus our comparison on distribution of galaxies brighter than $M_r < -18$ inside voids and study the mean separation of void galaxies, distance from the void center, and the radial density profile. We find that mean separation of void galaxies depends on void size, as bigger voids have lower mean separation in both samples. However, void galaxies in the observation sample seem to have generally larger mean-distance than simulated ones at any given void size…

Observational studies show that voids are prominent features of the large scale structure of the present day Universe. Even though their emerging from the primordial density perturbations and evolutionary patterns differ from dark matter halos, N-body simulations and theoretical models have shown that voids also merge together to form large void structures. In this study, following Sheth & van de Weygaert (2004), we formulate an analytical approximate description of the hierarchical void evolution of growing voids by adopting the halo merging algorithm given by Lacey & Cole (1993) in the Einst…
Combining galaxy cluster and void abundances is a novel, powerful way to constrain deviations from General Relativity and the $Λ$CDM model. For a flat $w$CDM model with growth of large-scale structure parameterized by the redshift-dependent growth index $γ(z) = γ_0 + γ_1 z/(1+z)$ of linear matter perturbations, combining void and cluster abundances in future surveys with Euclid and the 4-metre Multi-Object Spectroscopic Telescope (4MOST) could improve the Figure of Merit for ($w, γ_0, γ_1$) by a factor of 20 compared to individual abundances. In an ideal case, improvement on current cosmologic…
We present a comparison of void properties between the standard model of cosmology, $Λ$ Cold Dark Matter ($Λ$CDM), and two alternative cosmological models with evolving and interacting dark sectors: a quintessence model ($ϕ$CDM) and a Coupled Dark Matter-Dark Energy (CDE) model. Using $N$-body simulations of these models, we derive several measures of void statistics and properties, including distributions of void volume, ellipticity, prolateness, and average density. We find that the volume distribution derived from the CDE simulation deviates from the volume distribution derived from the $Λ$…
We study cosmic voids in the normal-branch Dvali-Gabadadze-Porrati (nDGP) braneworld models, which are representative of a class of modified gravity theories where deviations from General Relativity are usually hidden by the Vainshtein screening in high-density environments. This screening is less efficient away from these environments, which makes voids ideally suited for testing this class of models. We use N-body simulations of $Λ$-cold dark matter ($Λ$CDM) and nGDP universes, where dark matter haloes are populated with mock galaxies that mimic the clustering and number densities of the BOS…
The KBC void is a local underdensity with the observed relative density contrast $δ\equiv 1 - ρ/ρ_{0} = 0.46 \pm 0.06$ between 40 and 300 Mpc around the Local Group. If mass is conserved in the Universe, such a void could explain the $5.3σ$ Hubble tension. However, the MXXL simulation shows that the KBC void causes $6.04σ$ tension with standard cosmology ($Λ$CDM). Combined with the Hubble tension, $Λ$CDM is ruled out at $7.09σ$ confidence. Consequently, the density and velocity distribution on Gpc scales suggest a long-range modification to gravity. In this context, we consider a cosmological …
We propose an alternative physical mechanism to explain the observed accelerated expansion of the Universe based on the configuration entropy of the cosmic web and its evolution. We show that the sheets, filaments and clusters in the cosmic web act as sinks whereas the voids act as the sources of information. The differential entropy of the cosmic velocity field increases with time and also acts as a source of entropy. The growth of non-linear structures and the emergence of the cosmic web may lead to a situation where the overall dissipation rate of information at the sinks are about to domin…
We examine the fully relativistic evolution of cosmic voids constituted by baryons and cold dark matter (CDM), represented by two non-comoving dust sources in a $Λ$CDM background. For this purpose, we consider numerical solutions of Einstein's field equations in a fluid-flow representation adapted to spherical symmetry and multiple components. We present a simple example that explores the frame-dependence of the local expansion and the Hubble flow for this mixture of two dusts, revealing that the relative velocity between the sources yields a significantly different evolution in comparison wit…
We have searched for the signature of cosmic voids in the CMB, in both the Planck temperature and lensing-convergence maps; voids should give decrements in both. We use zobov voids from the DR12 SDSS CMASS galaxy sample. We base our analysis on N-body simulations, to avoid a posteriori bias. For the first time, we detect the signature of voids in CMB lensing: the significance is $3.2σ$, close to $Λ$CDM in both amplitude and projected density-profile shape. A temperature dip is also seen, at modest significance ($2.3σ$), with amplitude about 6 times the prediction. This temperature signal is in…
Using cosmological $N$-body simulation which coevolves cold dark matter (CDM) and neutrino particles, we discover the local effect of massive neutrinos on the spatial distribution of CDM halos, reflected on properties of the Delaunay Triangulation (DT) voids. Smaller voids are generally in regions with higher neutrino abundance and so their surrounding halos are impacted by a stronger neutrino free streaming. This makes the voids larger (surrounding halos being washed outward the void center). On the contrary, larger voids are generally in regions with lower neutrino abundance and so their sur…
We explore fundamental properties of the distribution of low mass dark matter halos within the cosmic web using warm dark matter (WDM) and cold dark matter (CDM) cosmological simulations. Using self abundance-matched mock galaxy catalogs, we show that the distribution of dwarf galaxies in a WDM universe, wherein low mass halo formation is heavily suppressed, is nearly indistinguishable to that of a CDM universe whose low mass halos are not seen because galaxy formation is suppressed below some threshold halo mass. However, if the scatter between dwarf galaxy luminosity and halo properties is l…
We study the impact of cosmic inhomogeneities on the interpretation of observations. We build an inhomogeneous universe model without dark energy that can confront supernova data and yet is reasonably well compatible with the Copernican Principle. Our model combines a relatively small local void, that gives apparent acceleration at low redshifts, with a meatball model that gives sizeable lensing (dimming) at high redshifts. Together these two elements, which focus on different effects of voids on the data, allow the model to mimic the concordance model.
The possibility of reconstructing a spherically symmetric inhomogeneous Lemaitre-Tolman-Bondi (LTB) model with $Λ$CDM observations has drawn a lot of attention. Recently, a LTB model having the same luminosity-distance and light-cone mass density as the $Λ$CDM model was reconstructed. We calculate the cosmic age at our position in this model, and get the age $t_{LTB}<11.7$Gyr in 2$σ$ confidence level from the Seven-Year WMAP observations. This result is inconsistent with some Milky Way observations.
We present catalogues of voids for the SDSS DR7 redshift survey and for Millennium I simulation mock data. We aim to compare the observations with simulations based on a $Λ$CDM model and a semi-analytic galaxy formation model. We use the void statistics as a test for these models. We assembled a mock catalogue that closely resembles the SDSS DR7 catalogue and carried out a parallel statistical analysis of the observed and simulated catalogue. We find that in the observation and the simulation, voids tend to be equally spherical. The total volume occupied by the voids and their total number are…
We study the impact of cosmological scale modifications to General Relativity on the dynamics of halos within voids by comparing N-body simulations incorporating Hu-Sawicki $f(R)$ gravity, with $|f_{R0}|=10^{-6}$ and $10^{-5}$, to those of $Λ$CDM. By examining the radial velocity statistics within voids classified based on their size and density-profile, as "rising" ($R$-type) or "shell" ($S$-type), we find that halo motions in small $R$-type voids, with effective radius $<15 Mpc/h$, reveal distinctive differences between $f(R)$ and $Λ$CDM cosmologies. To understand this observed effect, we st…
We apply a recent proposal to define "gravitational entropy" to the expansion of cosmic voids within the framework of non-perturbative General Relativity. By considering CDM void configurations compatible with basic observational constraints, we show that this entropy grows from post-inflationary conditions towards a final asymptotic value in a late time fully non-linear regime described by the Lemaitre-Tolman-Bondi (LTB) dust models. A qualitatively analogous behavior occurs if we assume a positive cosmological constant consistent with a $Λ$-CDM background model. However, the $Λ$ term introdu…
Dark energy models with various scenarios of evolution are considered from the viewpoint of the formalism for the equation of state. It is shown that these models are compatible with current astronomical data. Some of the models presented here evolve arbitrarily close to $Λ$CDM up to the present, but diverge in the future into a number of different possible asymptotic states, including asymptotic de-Sitter (pseudo-rip) evolution, little rips with disintegration of bound structures, and various forms of finite-time future singularities. Therefore it is impossible from observational data to dete…
The absence of a physically motivated model for large scale profiles of cosmic voids limits our ability to extract valuable cosmological information from their study. In this paper, we address this problem by introducing the spherically compensated cosmic regions, named CoSpheres. Such cosmic regions are identified around local extrema in the density field and admit a unique compensation radius $R_1$ where the internal spherical mass is exactly compensated. Their origin is studied by extending the standard peak model and implementing the compensation condition. Since the compensation radius ev…
We study the spherical evolution model for voids in $Λ$CDM, where the evolution of voids is governed by dark energy at an earlier time than that for the whole universe or in overdensities. We show that the presence of dark energy suppresses the growth of peculiar velocities, causing void shell-crossing to occur at progressively later epochs as $Ω_Λ$ increases. We apply the spherical model to evolve the initial conditions of N-body simulated voids and compare the resulting final void profiles. We find that the model is successful in tracking the evolution of voids with radii greater than $30 h^…
Lemaître - Tolman (L--T) toy models with a central observer have been used to study the effect of large scale inhomogeneities on the SN Ia dimming. Claims that a giant void is mandatory to explain away dark energy in this framework are currently dominating. Our aim is to show that L-T models exist that reproduce a few features of the $Λ$CDM model, but do not contain the giant cosmic void. We propose to use two sets of data - the angular diameter distance together with the redshift-space mass-density and the angular diameter distance together with the expansion rate - both defined on the past n…

We use properties of void populations identified in $N$-body simulations to forecast the ability of upcoming galaxy surveys to differentiate models of f(R) gravity from \lcdm~cosmology. We analyze multiple simulation realizations, which were designed to mimic the expected number densities, volumes, and redshifts of the upcoming Euclid satellite and a lower-redshift ground-based counterpart survey, using the public {\tt VIDE} toolkit. We examine void abundances, ellipicities, radial density profiles, and radial velocity profiles at redshifts 1.0 and 0.43. We find that stronger f(R) coupling str…
We compare the evolution of voids formed under the standard cosmological model and two alternative cosmological models. The two models are a quintessence model ($ϕ$CDM) and a Coupled Dark Matter-Dark Energy (CDE) model, both of which have evolving and interacting dark sectors. From $N$-body adiabatic hydrodynamical simulations of these models, we measure the statistics and quantify the properties of voids over the redshift range $z=1.5-12$: these include their population size, volumes, shapes and average densities. We find that the latter property has potential as a probe of cosmology, particu…
Cosmic voids in the large-scale structure of the Universe affect the peculiar motions of objects in their vicinity. Although these motions are difficult to observe directly, the clustering pattern of their surrounding tracers in redshift space is influenced in a unique way. This allows to investigate the interplay between densities and velocities around voids, which is solely dictated by the laws of gravity. With the help of $N$-body simulations and derived mock-galaxy catalogs we calculate the average density fluctuations around voids identified with a watershed algorithm in redshift space an…

We report novel cosmological constraints obtained from cosmic voids in the final BOSS DR12 dataset. They arise from the joint analysis of geometric and dynamic distortions of average void shapes (i.e., the stacked void-galaxy cross-correlation function) in redshift space. Our model uses tomographic deprojection to infer real-space void profiles and self-consistently accounts for the Alcock-Paczynski (AP) effect and redshift-space distortions (RSD) without any prior assumptions on cosmology or structure formation. It is derived from first physical principles and provides an extremely good descr…
A $Λ$CDM Extension Explaining the Hubble Tension and the Spatial Curvature $Ω_{k,0} = -0.012 \pm 0.010$ Measured by the Final PR4 of the Planck Mission
HectoMAP is a dense redshift survey of red galaxies covering a 53 $deg^{2}$ strip of the northern sky. HectoMAP is 97\% complete for galaxies with $r<20.5$, $(g-r)>1.0$, and $(r-i)>0.5$. The survey enables tests of the physical properties of large-scale structure at intermediate redshift against cosmological models. We use the Horizon Run 4, one of the densest and largest cosmological simulations based on the standard $Λ$ Cold Dark Matter ($Λ$CDM) model, to compare the physical properties of observed large-scale structures with simulated ones in a volume-limited sample covering 8$\times10^6$ $…

It is shown how certain observations interpreted in the background of the Friedmann model with $Λ< 0 = k$ (the $Λ$CDM model) can be re-interpreted using the $Λ= 0$ Lema\^ıtre - Tolman (L-T) model so as to do away with the "dark energy". The purpose of the paper is to clarify the underlying geometrical relations by doing the calculations as much as possible analytically or by very simple numerical programs. In the first part of the paper (fictitious) observations of the distribution of expansion velocity along the past light cone of the observer are considered. It is shown that the whole past l…
We measure the average temperature decrement on the cosmic microwave background (CMB) produced by voids selected in the SDSS DR7 spectroscopic redshift galaxy catalog, spanning redshifts $0<z<0.44$. We find an imprint of amplitude between 2.6 and 2.9$μK$ as viewed through a compensated top-hat filter scaled to the radius of each void; we assess the statistical significance of the imprint at ~2$σ$. We make crucial use of $N$-body simulations to calibrate our analysis. As expected, we find that large voids produce cold spots on the CMB through the Integrated Sachs-Wolfe (ISW) effect. However, we…
Light is affected by local inhomogeneities in its propagation, which may alter distances and so cosmological parameter estimation. In the era of precision cosmology, the presence of inhomogeneities may induce systematic errors if not properly accounted. In this vein, a new interpretation of the conventional Dyer-Roeder (DR) approach by allowing light received from distant sources to travel in regions denser than average is proposed. It is argued that the existence of a distribution of small and moderate cosmic voids (or "black regions") implies that its matter content was redistributed to the …

We discuss how dynamical dark energy universes with exotic singularities may be distinguished from the standard $Λ$CDM model on the basis of their redshift drift signal, for which measurements both in the acceleration phase and in the deep matter era will be provided by forthcoming astrophysical facilities. Two specific classes of exotic singularity models are studied: sudden future singularity models and finite scale factor singularity models. In each class we identify the models which can mimic $Λ$CDM and play the role of dark energy as well as models for which redshift drift signals are sig…
A $Λ$CDM model with dark matter that decays into inert relativistic energy on a timescale longer than the Hubble time will produce an expansion history that can be misinterpreted as stable dark matter with time-varying dark energy. We calculate the corresponding spurious equation of state parameter, $\widetilde w_ϕ$, as a function of redshift, and show that the evolution of $\widetilde w_ϕ$ depends strongly on the assumed value of the dark matter density, erroneously taken to scale as $a^{-3}$. Depending on the latter, one can obtain models that mimic quintessence ($\widetilde w_ϕ> -1$), phant…
Cosmological observables are used to construct cosmological models. Since cosmological observations are limited to the light cone, a fixed number of observables (even measured to arbitrary accuracy) may not uniquely determine a cosmological model without additional assumptions or considerations. A prescription for constructing a spherically symmetric, inhomogeneous cosmological model that exactly reproduces the luminosity-distance as a function of redshift and the light-cone mass density as a function of redshift of a $Λ$CDM model is employed to gain insight into how an inhomogeneous cosmologi…
Multiple $Λ$CDM cosmology is studied in a way that is formally a classical analog of the Casimir effect. Such cosmology corresponds to a time-dependent dark fluid model or, alternatively, to its scalar field presentation, and it motivated by the string landscape picture. The future evolution of the several dark energy models constructed within the scheme is carefully investigated. It turns out to be almost always possible to choose the parameters in the models so that they match the most recent and accurate astronomical values. To this end, several universes are presented which mimick (multipl…
We present measurements of the anisotropic cross-correlation of galaxies and cosmic voids in data from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey Main Galaxy Sample (MGS), Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey (BOSS) and extended BOSS (eBOSS) luminous red galaxy catalogues from SDSS Data Releases 7, 12 and 16, covering the redshift range $0.07<z<1.0$. As in our previous work analysing voids in subsets of these data, we use a reconstruction method applied to the galaxy data before void-finding in order to remove selection biases when constructing the void samples. We report results of a joint fit to the mu…
The Universe may feature large-scale inhomogeneities beyond the standard paradigm, implying that statistical homogeneity and isotropy may be reached only on much larger scales than the usually assumed $\sim$100 Mpc. This means that we are not necessarily typical observers and that the Copernican principle could be recovered only on super-Hubble scales. Here, we do not assume the validity of the Copernican principle and let Cosmic Microwave Background, Baryon Acoustic Oscillations, type Ia supernovae, local $H_0$, cosmic chronometers, Compton y-distortion and kinetic Sunyaev-Zeldovich observati…
The local void model has lately attracted considerable attention since it can explain the present apparent accelerated expansion of the universe without introducing dark energy. However, in order to justify this model as an alternative cosmological model to the standard $Λ$CDM model (FLRW universe plus dark energy), one has to test the model by various observations, such as CMB temperature anisotropy, other than the distance-redshift relation of SNIa. For this purpose, we derive some analytic formulae that can be used to rigorously compare consequences of this model with observations of CMB an…
The local void model has recently attracted considerable attention because it can explain the apparent accelerated expansion of the present universe without introducing dark energy. However, in order to justify this model as an alternative to the standard $Λ$CDM cosmology, the model should be tested by various observations, such as the CMB temperature anisotropy, besides the distance-redshift relation of SNIa. For this purpose, we derive analytic formulae for the dipole and quadrupole moments of the CMB temperature anisotropy that hold for any spherically symmetric universe model and can be us…
We identified voids in the completed VIMOS Public Extragalactic Redshift Survey (VIPERS), using an algorithm based on searching for empty spheres. We measured the cross-correlation between the centres of voids and the complete galaxy catalogue. The cross-correlation function exhibits a clear anisotropy in both VIPERS fields (W1 and W4), which is characteristic of linear redshift space distortions. By measuring the projected cross-correlation and then deprojecting it we are able to estimate the undistorted cross-correlation function. We propose that given a sufficiently well measured cross-corr…
