For any given polynomial $f$ over the finite field $\mathbb{F}_q$ with degree at most $q-1$, we associate it with a $q\times q$ matrix $A(f)=(a_{ik})$ consisting of coefficients of its powers $(f(x))^k=\sum_{i=0}^{q-1}a_{ik} x^i$ modulo $x^q -x$ for $k=0,1,\ldots,q-1$. This matrix has some interesting properties such as $A(g\circ f)=A(f)A(g)$ where $(g\circ f)(x) = g(f(x))$ is the composition of the polynomial $g$ with the polynomial $f$. In particular, $A(f^{(k)})=(A(f))^k$ for any $k$-th composition $f^{(k)}$ of $f$ with $k \geq 0$. As a consequence, we prove that the rank of $A(f)$ gives the cardinality of the value set of $f$. Moreover, if $f$ is a permutation polynomial then the matrix associated with its inverse $A(f^{(-1)})=A(f)^{-1}=PA(f)P$ where $P$ is an antidiagonal permutation matrix. As an application, we study the period of a nonlinear congruential pseduorandom sequence $\bar{a} = \{a_0, a_1, a_2, ... \}$ generated by $a_n = f^{(n)}(a_0)$ with initial value $a_0$, in terms of the order of the associated matrix. Finally we show that $A(f)$ is diagonalizable in some extension field of $\mathbb{F}_q$ when $f$ is a permutation polynomial over $\mathbb{F}_q$.
Permutation polynomials and their compositional inverses have wide applications in cryptography, coding theory, and combinatorial designs. Motivated by several previous results on finding compositional inverses of permutation polynomials of different forms, we propose a general method for finding these inverses of permutation polynomials constructed by the AGW criterion. As a result, we have reduced the problem of finding the compositional inverse of such a permutation polynomial over a finite field to that of finding the inverse of a bijection over a smaller set. We demonstrate our method by …
Starting from Ritt's classical theorems, we give a survey of results in functional decomposition of polynomials and of applications in Diophantine equations. This includes sufficient conditions for the indecomposability of polynomials, the study of decompositions of lacunary polynomials and the finiteness criterion for the equations of type f(x) = g(y).
In this paper, we prove that every PP is an AGW-PP. We also extend the result of Wan and Lidl to other permutation polynomials over finite fields and determine their group structure. Moreover, we provide a new general method to find the compositional inverses of all PPs, some new PPs and their compositional inverses are given.
Let $\left( g\left( x \right),xg\left( x \right) \right)$ be a Riordan matrix from the Bell subgroup. We denote ${{\left( g\left( x \right),xg\left( x \right) \right)}^{φ}}=\left( {{g}^{\left( φ\right)}}\left( x \right),x{{g}^{\left( φ\right)}}\left( x \right) \right)$, where a matrix power is defined in the standard way. The polynomials ${{c}_{n}}\left( x \right)$ such that ${{g}^{\left( φ\right)}}\left( x \right)=\sum\nolimits_{n=0}^{\infty }{{{c}_{n}}}\left( φ\right){{x}^{n}}$ will be called composition polynomials. We consider the composition polynomials of the RNA matrix. The construction…
This work is a study of polynomial compositions having a fixed number of terms. We outline a recursive method to describe these characterizations, give some particular results and discuss the general case. In the final sections, some applications to Universal Hilbert Sets generated by closed forms of linear recurrence relations and to integer perfect powers having few digits in their representation in a given scale $x \ge 2$ are provided.
For a set $S$ of quadratic polynomials over a finite field, let $C$ be the (infinite) set of arbitrary compositions of elements in $S$. In this paper we show that there are examples with arbitrarily large $S$ such that every polynomial in $C$ is irreducible. As a second result, we give an algorithm to determine whether all the elements in $C$ are irreducible, using only $O( \#S (\log q)^3 q^{1/2} )$ operations.
Let $\mathcal S$ be a set of monic degree $2$ polynomials over a finite field and let $C$ be the compositional semigroup generated by $\mathcal S$. In this paper we establish a necessary and sufficient condition for $C$ to be consisting entirely of irreducible polynomials. The condition we deduce depends on the finite data encoded in a certain graph uniquely determined by the generating set $\mathcal S$. Using this machinery we are able both to show examples of semigroups of irreducible polynomials generated by two degree $2$ polynomials and to give some non-existence results for some of these…
Let $q$ be an odd prime power and $D$ be the set of monic irreducible polynomials in $\mathbb F_q[x]$ which can be written as a composition of monic degree two polynomials. In this paper we prove that $D$ has a natural regular structure by showing that there exists a finite automaton having $D$ as accepted language. Our method is constructive.
The second author proved that the set of post-critically finite polynomials of given degree is a set of bounded height, up to change of variables. Motivated by an observation about unicritical polynomials, we complement this by proving that the set of monic polynomials g(z) of given degree with the property that there exists a d > 1 such that g(z^d) is post-critically finite, is also a set of bounded height. Moreover, we establish a lower bound on the critical height of g(z^d).

The use of permutation polynomials has appeared, along to their compositional inverses, as a good choice in the implementation of cryptographic systems. Hence, there has been a demand for constructions of these polynomials which coefficients belong to a finite field. As a particular case of permutation polynomial, involution is highly desired since its compositional inverse is itself. In this work, we present an effective way of how to construct several linear permutation polynomials over $\mathbb{F}_{q^n}$ as well as their compositional inverses using a decomposition of $\displaystyle{\frac{\…
The zeroes of Goss polynomials $G_{k, Λ}(X)$ for $Λ= A \defeq \mathbb{F}_{q}[T]$ and similar lattices $Λ$ are studied. Generically, the zero distribution follows a simple pattern governed by the $q$-adic expansion of $k-1$. However, if $q=p^{f}$ with $f \geq 2$ is a proper power of the prime $p$, irregularities of the $q$-adic sum-of-digits function may lead to deviations from this pattern, to irregular zeroes, and an abundance of trivial zeroes of $G_{k, Λ}$ compared to the generic formula. These phenomena are related to properties of the Sheats compositions of natural numbers $n$ divisible b…
We suggest a construction of the minimal polynomial $m_{β^k}$ of $β^k\in \mathbb F_{q^n}$ over $\mathbb F_q$ from the minimal polynomial $f= m_β$ for all positive integers $k$ whose prime factors divide $q-1$. The computations of our construction are carried out in $\mathbb F_q$. The key observation leading to our construction is that for $k \mid q-1$ holds $$m_{β^k}(X^k) = \prod_{j=1}^{\frac kt} ζ_k^{-jn} f (ζ_k^j X),$$ where $t= \max \{m\mid \gcd(n,k): f (X) = g (X^m), g \in \mathbb F_q[X]\}$ and $ζ_{k}$ is a primitive $k$-th root of unity in $\mathbb F_q$. The construction allows to constru…
Kopparty and Wang studied in [3] the relation between the roots of a univariate polhynomial over GF(q) and the zero-nonzero pattern of its coefficients. We generalize their results to polynomials in more variables.
In this paper we prove Hasse local-global principle for polynomials with coefficients in Mordell-Weil type groups over number fields like S-units, abelian varieties with trivial ring of endomorphisms and odd algebraic K-theory groups.
By polynomial (or extended binomial) coefficients, we mean the coefficients in the expansion of integral powers, positive and negative, of the polynomial $1+t +\cdots +t^{m}$; $m\geq 1$ being a fixed integer. We will establish several identities and summation formulæ parallel to those of the usual binomial coefficients.
We continue our study on counting irreducible polynomials over a finite field with prescribed coefficients. We set up a general combinatorial framework using generating functions with coefficients from a group algebra which is generated by equivalent classes of polynomials with prescribed coefficients. Simplified expressions are derived for some special cases. Our results extend some earlier results.
A polynomial over a ring is called decomposable if it is a composition of two nonlinear polynomials. In this paper, we obtain sharp lower and upper bounds for the number of decomposable polynomials with integer coefficients of fixed degree and bounded height. Moreover, we obtain asymptotic formulas for the number of decomposable monic polynomials of even degree. For example, the number of monic sextic integer polynomials which are decomposable and of height at most $H$ is asymptotic to $(16ζ(3)-5/4)H^3$ as $H \to \infty$.
In this paper special values of Bell polynomials are given by using the power series solution of the equation $y^{(k)}=e^{ay}$. In addition, complete and partial exponential autonomous functions, exponential autonomous polynomials, autonomous polynomials and $(k,a)$-autonomous coefficients are defined. Finally, we show the relationship between various numbers counting combinatorial objects and binomial coefficients, Stirling numbers of the second kind and autonomous coefficients.
Permutation polynomials with coefficients 1 over finite fields attract researchers' interests due to their simple algebraic form. In this paper, we first construct four classes of fractional permutation polynomials over the cyclic subgroup of $ \mathbb{F}_{2^{2m}} $. From these permutation polynomials, three new classes of permutation polynomials with coefficients 1 over $ \mathbb{F}_{2^{2m}} $ are constructed, and three more general new classes of permutation polynomials with coefficients 1 over $ \mathbb{F}_{2^{2m}} $ are constructed using a new method we presented recently. Some known permu…
A unitary cyclotomic polynomial of order three is a polynomial of the form \[ Φ^*_{PQR}(x)=\frac{(x^{PQR}-1)(x^P-1)(x^Q-1)(x^R-1)}{(x^{PQ}-1)(x^{QR}-1)(x^{RP}-1)(x-1)}, \] where $P$, $Q$ and $R$ are powers of three distinct primes $p$, $q$ and $r$. Fixing any such prime triple generates a family of these polynomials corresponding to all possible choices of $P=p^a$, $Q=q^b$ and $R=r^c$. We study the coefficients of polynomials in such a family. In particular, we show that the coefficients of polynomials in every such family cover all of $\mathbb{Z}$.
We use $q$-binomial theorem to prove three new polynomial identities involving $q$-trinomial coefficients. We then use summation formulas for the $q$-trinomial coefficients to convert our identities into another set of three polynomial identities, which imply Capparelli's partition theorems when the degree of the polynomial tends to infinity. This way we also obtain an interesting new result for the sum of the Capparelli's products. We finish this paper by proposing an infinite hierarchy of polynomial identities.
In this paper, we propose a general method to express explicitly the inversion and the connection coefficients between two basic hypergeometric polynomial sets. As application, we consider some $d$-orthogonal basic hypergeometric polynomials and we derive expansion formulae corresponding to all the families within the $q$-Askey scheme.
In the present paper, we treat multidimensional polynomial Euler products with complex coefficients on ${\mathbb{R}}^d$. We give necessary and sufficient conditions for the multidimensional polynomial Euler products to generate infinitely divisible, quasi-infinitely divisible but non-infinitely divisible or not even characteristic functions by using Baker's theorem. Moreover, we give many examples of zeta distributions on ${\mathbb{R}}^d$ generated by the multidimensional polynomial Euler products with complex coefficients. Finally, we consider applications to analytic number theory.
