We put forward a scheme to study the anisotropic magnetic couplings in Sr2IrO4 by mapping fully relativistic constrained noncollinear density functional theory including an on-site Hubbard U correction onto a general spin model Hamiltonian. This procedure allows for the simultaneous account and direct control of the lattice, spin and orbital interactions within a fully ab initio scheme. We compute the isotropic, single site anisotropy and Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya (DM) coupling parameters, and clarify that the origin of the canted magnetic state in Sr2IrO4 arises from the interplay between structural distortions and the competition between isotropic exchange and DM interactions. A complete magnetic phase diagram with respect to the tetragonal distortion and the rotation of IrO6 octahedra is constructed, revealing the presence of two types of canted to collinear magnetic transitions: a spin-flop transition with increasing tetragonal distortion and a complete quenching of the basal weak ferromagnetic moment below a critical octahedral rotation.
In this work we study the complex entanglement between spin interactions, electron correlation and Janh-Teller structural instabilities in the 5d$^1$ $J_{eff}=\frac{3}{2}$ spin-orbit coupled double perovskite $\rm Ba_2NaOsO_6$ using first principles approaches. By combining non-collinear magnetic calculations with multipolar pseudospin Hamiltonian analysis and many-body techniques we elucidate the origin of the observed quadrupolar canted antifferomagnetic. We show that the non-collinear magnetic order originates from Jahn-Teller distortions due to the cooperation of Heisenberg exchange, quadr…
By using the coupled cluster method, the numerical exact diagonalization method, and the numerical density matrix renormalization group method, we investigated the properties of the one-dimensional Heisenberg chain with alternating antiferromagnetic and ferromagnetic next nearest neighbor interactions. In the classical limit, the ground state is in the collinear Neel state if a<1/2, while for a>1/2, there is an noncollinear canted state. For the quantum case, we found that, although the classical Neel state is absent, the canted state exists if the frustration parameter a exceeds a critical po…
In antiferromagnets, the efficient propagation of spin-waves has until now only been observed in the insulating antiferromagnet hematite, where circularly (or a superposition of pairs of linearly) polarized spin-waves propagate over long distances. Here, we report long-distance spin-transport in the antiferromagnetic orthoferrite YFeO$_3$, where a different transport mechanism is enabled by the combined presence of the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction and externally applied fields. The magnon decay length is shown to exceed hundreds of nano-meters, in line with resonance measurements that hig…
This work develops a new generalized technique for determining the static and dynamic properties of any non-collinear magnetic system. By rotating the spin operators into the local spin reference frame, we evaluate the zeroth, first, and second order terms in a Holstein-Primakoff expansion, and through a Green's functions approach, we determine the structure factor intensities for the spin-wave frequencies. To demonstrate this technique, we examine the spin-wave dynamics of the generalized Villain model with a varying interchain interaction. The new interchain coupling expands the overall phas…
The non-stoichiometric double perovskite oxide La2Ni1.19Os0.81O6 was synthesized by solid state reaction and its crystal and magnetic structures were investigated by powder x-ray and neutron diffraction. La2Ni1.19Os0.81O6 crystallizes in the monoclinic double perovskite structure (general formula A2BB'O6) with space group P21/n, where the B site is fully occupied by Ni and the B' site by 19 % Ni and 81 % Os atoms. Using x-ray absorption spectroscopy an Os4.5+ oxidation state was established, suggesting presence of about 50 % paramagnetic Os5+ (5d3, S = 3/2) and 50 % non-magnetic Os4+ (5d4, Jef…
By means of powder neutron diffraction we investigate changes in the magnetic structure of the coplanar non-collinear antiferromagnet Mn$_3$Ge caused by an application of hydrostatic pressure up to 5\phantom{ }GPa. At ambient conditions the kagomé layers of Mn atoms in Mn$_3$Ge order in a triangular 120$^{\circ}$ spin structure. Under high pressure the spins acquire a uniform out-of-plane canting, gradually transforming the magnetic texture to a non-coplanar configuration. With increasing pressure the canted structure fully transforms into the collinear ferromagnetic one. We observed that magn…
Motivated by the importance of non-collinear and non-coplanar magnetic phases in determining various electrical properties of magnetic materials, we investigate the phase diagrams of the extended Hubbard model on anisotropic triangular lattice. We make use of a mean-field scheme that treats collinear, non-collinear and non-coplanar phases on equal footing. In addition to the ferromagnetic and 120° antiferromagnetic phases, we find the four-sublattice flux, the 3Q non-coplanar and the non-collinear charge-ordered states to be stable at specific values of filling fraction $n$. Inter-site Coulomb…
We report an unusual canted magnetism due to 3d and 4f electrons, occupying two different crystallographic sites, with its consequence to electric dipole order. This is based on neutron powder diffraction measurements on Tb2BaNiO5 (orthorhombic, Immm centrosymmetric space group), exhibiting Neel order below (TN) 63 K, to understand multiferroic behavior below 25 K. The magnetic structure is made up of Ni and Tb magnetic moments, which are found to be mutually canted in the entire temperature range below TN, though collinearity is seen within each sublattice, as known in the past. First-princip…
One of the signatures of the face-centered cubic (fcc) antiferromagnet as a typical example of a geometrically frustrated system is the large ground state degeneracy of the classical nearest neighbor and next-nearest neighbor Heisenberg (isotropic) model on this lattice. In particular, collinear states are degenerate with non-collinear and non-coplanar ones: this degeneracy is accidental and is expected to be lifted by anisotropic exchange interactions. In this work, we derive the most general nearest and next-nearest neighbor exchange model allowed by the space-group symmetry of the noncentro…
Elastic and inelastic neutron scattering experiments have been performed in a La$_{0.94}$Sr$_{0.06}$MnO$_3$ untwinned crystal, which exhibits an antiferromagnetic canted magnetic structure with ferromagnetic layers. The elastic small q scattering exhibits a modulation with an anisotropic q-dependence. It can be pictured by ferromagnetic inhomogeneities or polarons with a platelike shape, the largest size ($\approx17Å$) and largest inter-polaron distance ($\approx$ 38$Å$) being within the ferromagnetic layers. Comparison with observations performed on Ca-doped samples, which show the growth of …
The Heisenberg antiferromagnet on a two-dimensional triangular lattice is a paradigmatic problem in frustrated magnetism. Even in the classical limit, its properties are far from simple. The "120 degree" ground state favoured by the frustrated antiferromagnetic interactions contains a hidden chiral symmetry, and supports two distinct types of excitation. And famously, three distinct phases, including a collinear one-third magnetisation plateau, are stabilised by thermal fluctuations in applied magnetic field. The questions of symmetry-breaking raised by this model are deep and subtle, and afte…
The helimagnetic order describes a non-collinear spin texture of antiferromagnets, arising from competing exchange interactions. Although collinear antiferromagnets are elemental building blocks of antiferromagnetic (AFM) spintronics, the potential of implementing spintronic functionality in non-collinear antiferromagnets has not been clarified thus far. Here, we propose an AFM helimagnet of EuCo2As2 as a novel single-phase spintronic material that exhibits a remarkable sign reversal of anisotropic magnetoresistance (AMR). The contrast in the AMR arises from two electrically distinctive magnet…
We discuss theoretically a frustrated Heisenberg antiferromagnet in magnetic field close to the saturation one. It is demonstrated that a small biaxial anisotropy and/or the magnetic dipolar interaction produce a delicate balance between phases with a commensurate canted, incommensurate helical (conical), and fan spin orderings. As a result, different sequences of phase transitions are realized depending on values of these small anisotropic interactions. We derive analytical expressions for critical fields and ground-state energies of the phases which are in a quantitative agreement with our a…
The phase diagram of the quasi-one-dimensional magnet NaCuMoO$_4$(OH) is established through single-crystal NMR and heat-capacity measurements. The $^{23}$Na and $^1$H NMR experiments indicate a spiral and a collinear spin-density-wave (SDW) order below and above $B_c$ = 1.5-1.8 T, respectively. Moreover, in the paramagnetic state above the SDW transition temperature, the nuclear spin-lattice relaxation rate $1/T_1$ indicates anisotropic spin fluctuations that have gapped excitations in the transverse spectrum but gapless ones in the longitudinal spectrum. These static and dynamic properties a…
The Co2V2O7 is recently reported to exhibit amazing magnetic field-induced magnetization plateaus and ferroelectricity, but its magnetic ground state remains ambiguous due to its structural complexity. Magnetometry measurements, and time-of-flight neutron powder diffraction (NPD) have been employed to study the structural and magnetic properties of Co2V2O7, which consists of two non-equivalent Co sites. Upon cooling below the Neél temperature TN = 6.3 K, we observe magnetic Bragg peaks at 2K in NPD which indicated the formation of long range magnetic order of Co2+ moments. After symmetry analy…
We measured the electrical resistivity, AC magnetic susceptibility, and specific heat of the cubic double perovskite Ba$_2$MgReO$_6$ under pressure. The application of pressure leads to a gradual increase in the transition temperature to the canted antiferromagnetic order, while the quadrupolar order is suppressed above 5 GPa, at which a collinear antiferromagnetic state appears. The obtained unit cell volume-temperature phase diagram for the compound as well as the related compounds suggests that Ba$_2$MgReO$_6$ exists near the phase boundary between the noncollinear and the collinear antifer…
We report the magnetic structure of room-temperature-stable, monoclinic Mn$_3$As$_2$ at 3 K and 250 K using neutron powder diffraction measurements. From magnetometry data, the Curie temperature of Mn$_3$As$_2$ was confirmed to be around 270 K. Calorimetry analysis showed the presence of another transition at 225 K. At 270 K, Mn$_3$As$_2$ undergoes a $k = 0$ ferrimagnetic ordering in the magnetic space group $C2/m$ (#12.58) with Mn moments pointing along $b$. Below 225 K, there is a canting of Mn moments in the $ac$ plane which produces a multi-$k$ non-collinear magnetic structure in space gro…
In the metallic pyrochlore Nd$_2$Mo$_2$O$_7$, the conducting Molybdenum sublattice adopts canted, yet nearly collinear ferromagnetic order with nonzero scalar spin chirality. The chemical potential may be controlled by replacing Nd$^{3+}$ with Ca$^{2+}$, while introducing only minimal additional disorder to the conducting states. Here, we demonstrate the stability of the canted ferromagnetic state, including the tilting angle of Molybdenum spins, in (Nd$_{1-x}$Ca$_{x}$)$_2$Mo$_2$O$_7$ (NCMO) with $x\le 0.15$ using magnetic susceptibility measurements. Mo-Mo and Mo-Nd magnetic couplings both ch…
We study a two-dimensional (2D) spin-half Heisenberg model related to the quasi 2D antiferromagnets (Ba,Sr)2Cu3O4Cl2 by means of exact diagonalization and spin-wave theory. The model consists of two inequivalent interpenetrating square-lattice Heisenberg antiferromagnets A and B. While the antiferromagnetic interaction JAA within the A subsystem is strong the coupling JBB within the B subsystem is much weaker. The coupling JAB between A and B subsystems is competing giving rise for interesting frustration effects. In dependence of the strength of JAB we find a collinear Neel phase, non-colline…
We explore the effect of the third nearest-neighbors on the magnetic properties of the Heisenberg model on an anisotropic triangular lattice. We obtain the phase diagram of the model using Schwinger-boson mean-field theory. Competition between Néel, spiral and collinear magnetically ordered phases is found as we vary the on the ratios of the nearest, J1, next-nearest, J2, and third-nearest, J_3, neighbor exchange couplings. A spin liquid phase is stabilized between the spiral and collinear ordered states when J2/J1 < 1.8 for rather small J3/J1 < 0.1. The lowest energy two-spinon dispersions re…
We investigate the metal-insulator transition in the layered Ruddelsden Popper series of strontium iridates Srn+1IrnO3n+1. Tight-binding models of t2g orbitals for n = 1, 2, and infinity are constructed, and changes in band dispersion due to dimensionality and spin-orbit coupling are presented. Identifying the states near the Fermi level to be predominantly Jeff = 1/2, we use an effective Hubbard model to study the effect of correlations. Transitions from a metallic state to various magnetically ordered states at different critical interactions are obtained. A canted antiferromagnetic insulato…
In this work we discuss the non-collinear ground-state reported for GdGa on the basis of a model Hamiltonian considering anisotropic exchange interactions. We show that a competition between intra and inter-sublattice exchange interactions can lead to a canted structure, which competes with a collinear (ferro or antiferromagnetic) order. The mean-field thermodynamic analysis of the model for $S=7/2$ shows a good agreement between calculated and reported experimental data of the canting angle and isothermal entropy change for GdGa.
We use the coupled cluster method to study the zero-temperature properties of an extended two-dimensional Heisenberg antiferromagnet formed from spin-1/2 moments on an infinite spatially anisotropic kagome lattice of corner-sharing isosceles triangles, with nearest-neighbor bonds only. The bonds have exchange constants $J_{1}>0$ along two of the three lattice directions and $J_{2} \equiv κJ_{1} > 0$ along the third. In the classical limit the ground-state (GS) phase for $κ< 1/2$ has collinear ferrimagnetic (Néel$'$) order where the $J_2$-coupled chain spins are ferromagnetically ordered in one…
High-field magnetization of the spin-$1/2$ antiferromagnet $α$-Cu$_2$V$_2$O$_7$ was measured in pulsed magnetic fields of up to 56 T in order to study its magnetic phase diagram. When the field was applied along the easy axis (the $a$-axis), two distinct transitions were observed at $H_{c1}=6.5$~T and $H_{c2}=18.0$~T. The former is a spin-flop transition typical for a collinear antiferromagnet and the latter is believed to be a spin-flip transition of canted moments. The canted moments, which are induced by the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interactions, anti-align for $H_{c1}<H<H_{c2}$ due to the ani…
We analyze instabilities of the collinear up-up-down state of a two-dimensional quantum spin-S spatially anisotropic triangular lattice antiferromagnet in a magnetic field. We find, within large-S approximation, that near the end point of the plateau, the collinear state becomes unstable due to condensation of two-magnon bound pairs rather than single magnons. The two-magnon instability leads to a novel 2D vector chiral phase with alternating spin currents but no magnetic order in the direction transverse to the field. This phase breaks a discrete Z_2 symmetry but preserves a continuous U(1) o…
The Kitaev material $α$-RuCl$_3$ is among the most prominent candidates to host a quantum spin-liquid state endowed with fractionalized excitations. Recent experimental and theoretical investigations have separately revealed the importance of both the magnetoelastic coupling and the magnetic anisotropy, in dependence of the applied magnetic field direction. In this combined theoretical and experimental research, we investigate the anisotropic magnetic and magnetoelastic properties for magnetic fields applied along the main crystallographic axes as well as for fields canted out of the honeycomb…
A pair of magnetic atoms with canted spins Sa, Sb can give rise to an electric dipole moment P. Several forms for the behavior of such a moment have appeared in the theoretical literature, some of which have been invoked to explain experimental results found in various multiferroic materials. The forms specifically are P1 ~ R x (Sa x Sb); P2 ~ Sa x Sb, and P3 ~ Sa (R . Sa) - Sb (R . Sb), where R is the relative position of the atoms and Sa, Sb are unit vectors. To unify and generalize these various forms we consider P as the most general quadratic function of the spin components that vanishes …
The orthoperovskites TbCoO$_3$ and DyCoO$_3$ with Co$^{3+}$ in a non-magnetic low-spin state have been investigated by neutron diffraction down to 0.25 K. Magnetic ordering is evidenced below $T_N=3.3$ K and 3.6 K, respectively, and the ordered arrangements are of canted type, A$_x$G$_y$ for TbCoO$_3$ and G$_x$A$_y$ for DyCoO$_3$ in Bertaut's notation. The experiments are confronted with the first-principle calculations of the crystal field and magnetism of Tb$^{3+}$ and Dy$^{3+}$ ions, located in the $Pbnm$ structure on sites of $C_s$ point symmetry. Both these ions exhibit an Ising behavior,…
The perovskite nickelates RNiO$_3$ (R: rare-earth) have been studied as potential multiferroic compounds. A certain degree of charge disproportionation in the Ni ions has been confirmed by high resolution synchrotron power diffraction: instead of the nominal Ni$^{3+}$ valence, they can have the mixed-valence state Ni$^{(3-δ)+}$ and Ni$^{(3+δ)+}$, though agreement has not been reached on the precise value of $δ$ (e.g. for NdNiO$_3$, $δ=0.0$ and $δ=0.29$ were reported). Also, the magnetic ground state is not yet clear: collinear and non-collinear Ni-O magnetic structures have been proposed to ex…
We use the coupled cluster method (CCM) to study the zero-temperature phase diagram of a 2D frustrated spin-half antiferromagnet, the so-called Union Jack model. It is defined on a square lattice such that all nearest-neighbor bonds are present with a strength $J_{1} > 0$, but only half the next-nearest-neighbor bonds are present with a strength $J_{2} \equiv κJ_{1} > 0$. The bonds are arranged such that on the $2 \times 2$ unit cell they form the pattern of the Union Jack flag. We find strong evidence for a first phase transition between a Néel phase and a canted ferrimagnetic phase at a crit…
Na$_2$Co$_2$TeO$_6$ has recently been proposed to be a Kitaev-like honeycomb magnet. To assess how close it is to realizing Kitaev quantum spin liquids, we have measured magnetization and specific heat on high-quality single crystals in magnetic fields applied along high-symmetry directions. Small training fields reveal a weak but canonical ferrimagnetic behavior below 27 K, which cannot be explained by the zigzag antiferromagnetic order alone and suggests coexisting Néel-type order of moments canted away from the zigzag chains. Moderate fields in the honeycomb plane suppress the thermal trans…
Using elastic and inelastic neutron scattering techniques, we show that upon cooling a spatially anisotropic triangular antiferromagnet Ag$_2$MnO$_2$ freezes below $T_f ~\sim 50$ K into short range collinear state. The static spin correlations are extremely two-dimensional, and the spin fluctuations are gapless with two characteristic relaxation rates that behave linearly with temperature.
We investigate the effect of ring-exchange on the ground-state properties and magnetic excitations of the $S = 1/2$ Heisenberg model on the anisotropic triangular lattice with ring-exchange at $T = 0$ using linear spin-wave theory. Classically, we find stable Néel, spiral and collinear magnetically ordered phases. Upon including quantum fluctuations to the model, linear spin-wave theory shows that ring exchange induces a large quantum disordered region in the phase diagram, completely wiping out the classically stable collinear phase. Analysis of the spin-wave spectra for each of these three m…
We clarify the macroscopic symmetry and microscopic model-parameter conditions for emergence of spin-split electronic band structure in collinear antiferromagnets without atomic spin-orbit coupling. By using the microscopic multipole descriptions, we elucidate the fundamental degree of freedom in a cluster unit of an antiferromagnet giving rise to an effective spin-orbit interaction through the anisotropic kinetic motions of electrons. We show a correspondence of the ordering patterns and resultant momentum-dependent spin splitting for 32 crystallographic point groups after demonstrating two i…

Motivated by an experimental report of iridate superlattices, we performed first-principle electronic structure calculations for SrIrO$_3$/SrTiO$_3$. Heterostructuring causes SrIrO$_3$ to become Sr$_2$IrO$_4$-like, and the system has the well-defined $j_{\rm eff}$=1/2 states near the Fermi level as well as canted antiferromagnetic order within the quasi-two-dimensional IrO$_2$ plane. In response to a larger tensile strain, the band gap is increased due to the resulting increase in bond length and the bandwidth reduction. The ground state magnetic properties are discussed in comparison to the m…
We investigate the Hubbard model on the anisotropic triangular lattice with two hopping parameters $t$ and $t^\prime$ in different spatial directions, interpolating between decoupled chains ($t=0$) and the isotropic triangular lattice ($t=t^\prime$). Variational wave functions that include both Jastrow and backflow terms are used to compare spin-liquid and magnetic phases with different pitch vectors describing both collinear and coplanar (spiral) order. For relatively large values of the on-site interaction $U/t^\prime \gtrsim 10$ and substantial frustration, i.e., $0.3\lesssim t/t^\prime \le…
We investigate the phase diagram of the anisotropic spin-1/2 triangular lattice antiferromagnet, with interchain diagonal exchange J' much weaker than the intrachain exchange J. We find that fluctuations lead to a competition between (commensurate) collinear antiferromagnetic and (zig-zag) dimer orders. Both states differ in symmetry from the spiral order known to occur for larger J', and are therefore separated by quantum phase transitions from it. The zero-field collinear antiferromagnet is succeeded in a magnetic field by magnetically-ordered spin-density-wave and cone phases, before reachi…
We report on magnetic properties of cubic compound Cu3TeO6 studied by $ac$ and $dc$ susceptibility and neutron powder diffraction for the first time. A novel magnetic lattice, three dimensional spin web, composed of almost planar regular hexagons of Cu2+, S =1/2 spins, defines the properties of Cu3TeO6. The behavior of the magnetic susceptibility in the paramagnetic state at approximately 170 K is suggestive for a competition between local anisotropies of Cu2+ hexagons. The resulting frustration is weaker than the antiferromagnetic nearest-neighbor interaction which leads to a collinear (or sl…
Magnetic phase diagram and Mott transition are studied in the Hubbard model on the anisotropic triangular lattice at zero temperature and half-filling by the variational cluster approximation, taking into account Néel, 120$^\circ$ Néel, and collinear orderings. Paramagnetic insulator (spin liquid) is realized above the metallic phase around the isotropic point. In general, this spin liquid state, continuously connected with the metallic state, changes to a magnetic state as the on-site Coulomb repulsion $U$ increases, but it persists up to large $U$ limit in a small window between 120$^\circ$ …
We study the ground state phases of the $S=1/2$ Heisenberg quantum antiferromagnet on the spatially anisotropic triangular lattice and on the square lattice with up to next-next-nearest neighbor coupling (the $J_1J_2J_3$ model), making use of Takahashi's modified spin-wave (MSW) theory supplemented by ordering vector optimization. We compare the MSW results with exact diagonalization and projected-entangled-pair-states calculations, demonstrating their qualitative and quantitative reliability. We find that MSW theory correctly accounts for strong quantum effects on the ordering vector of the m…
Co4Ta2O9 exhibits a three-dimensional magnetic lattice based on the buckled honeycomb motif. It shows unusual magnetoelectric effects, including the sign change and non-linearity. These effects cannot be understood without the detailed knowledge of the magnetic structure. Herein, we report neutron diffraction and direction-dependent magnetic susceptibility measurements on Co4Ta2O9 single crystals. Below 20.3 K, we find a long-range antiferromagnetic order in the alternating buckled and flat honeycomb layers of Co2+ ions stacked along the c axis. Within experimental accuracy, the magnetic momen…
Using resonant x-ray diffraction, we observe an easy c-axis collinear antiferromagnetic structure for the bilayer Sr$_3$Ir$_2$O$_7$, a significant contrast to the single layer Sr$_2$IrO$_4$ with in-plane canted moments. Based on a microscopic model Hamiltonian, we show that the observed spin-flop transition as a function of number of IrO$_2$ layers is due to strong competition among intra- and inter-layer bond-directional pseudo-dipolar interactions of the spin-orbit entangled $J_{eff}$=1/2 moments. With this we unravel the origin of anisotropic exchange interactions in a Mott insulator in the…
The present study reports on the structural and magnetic phase transitions in Pr-doped polycrystalline Tb0.6Pr0.4MnO3, using high-resolution neutron powder diffraction (NPD) collected at SINQ spallation source (PSI), to emphasize the suppression of the sinusoidal magnetic structure of pure TbMnO3 and the evolution to a collinear A-type antiferromagnetic ordering. The phase purity, Jahn-Teller distortion, and one-electron bandwidth for eg orbital of Mn3+ cation have been calculated for polycrystalline Tb0.6Pr0.4MnO3, in comparison to the parent materials TbMnO3 and PrMnO3, through the Rietveld …
We present a neutron diffraction study of FeV2O4, which is rare in exhibiting spin and orbital degrees of freedom on both cation sublattices of the spinel structure. Our data confirm the existence of three structural phase transitions previously identified with x-ray powder diffraction, and reveal that the lower two transitions are associated with sequential collinear and canted ferrimagnetic transitions involving both cation sites. Through consideration of local crystal and spin symmetry, we further conclude that Fe2+ cations are ferro-orbitally ordered below 135K and V3+ orbitals order at 60…
Quantum spin systems can break time reversal symmetry by developing spontaneous magnetization or spin chirality. However, collinear magnets and chiral spin states are invariant under different symmetries, implying that the order parameter of one phase vanishes in the other. We show how to construct one-dimensional anisotropic spin models that exhibit a "Landau-forbidden" continuous phase transition between such states. As a concrete example, we focus on a zigzag chain with bond-dependent exchange and six-spin interactions. Using a combination of exact solutions, effective field theories, and n…
The phase diagram of the spin-1/2 Heisenberg antiferromagnet on an anisotropic triangular lattice of weakly coupled chains, a model relevant to Cs2CuCl4, is investigated using a renormalization group analysis, which includes marginal couplings important for connecting to numerical studies of this model. In particular, the relative stability of incommensurate spiral spin-density order and collinear antiferromagnetic order is studied. While incommensurate spiral order is found to exist over most of the phase diagram in the presence of a Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya (DM) interaction, at small interchain…
We study the zero-temperature phase diagram and the low-energy excitations of a mixed-spin ($S_1>S_2$) $J_1-J_2$ Heisenberg model defined on a square lattice by using a spin-wave analysis, the coupled cluster method, and the Lanczos exact-diagonalization technique. As a function of the frustration parameter $J_2/J_1$ ($ >0$), the phase diagram exhibits a quantized ferrimagnetic phase, a canted spin phase, and a mixed-spin collinear phase. The presented results point towards a strong disordering effect of the frustration and quantum spin fluctuations in the vicinity of the classical spin-flop t…
The antiferromagnetic structure of Sr3Ir2O7, the bilayer analogue of a spin-orbital Mott insulator Sr2IrO4, was revealed by resonant magnetic x-ray diffraction. Contrasting intensities of the magnetic diffraction at the Ir LIII and LII edges show a Jeff=1/2 character of the magnetic moment as is argued in Sr2IrO4. The magnitude of moment, however, was found to be smaller than that of Sr2IrO4 by a factor of 5-6, implying that Sr3Ir2O7 is no longer a Mott insulator but a weak antiferromagnet. An evident change of the temperature dependence of the resistivity at TN, from almost temperature-indepe…
We analyze and compare the effect of spatial and spin anisotropy on spin conductivity in a two dimensional S=1/2 Heisenberg quantum magnet on a square lattice. We explore the model in both the Neel antiferromagnetic (AF) phase and the collinear antiferromagnetic (CAF) phase. We find that in contrast to the effects of spin anisotropy in the Heisenberg model, spatial anisotropy in the AF phase does not suppress the zero temperature regular part of the spin conductivity in the zero frequency limit - rather it enhances it. We also explore the finite temperature effects on the Drude weight in the A…
We investigate low energy magnon excitations above the non-collinear flux state and non-coplanar canted flux state in a Heisenberg anti-ferromagnet with Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction~(DMI) on a Sashtry-Sutherland lattice. While previous studies have shown the presence of topological magnetic excitation in the dimer and ferromagnetic phases on the Shastry-Sutherland lattice, our results establish the non-trivial topology of magnons in the anti-ferromagnetic flux and canted flux states. Our results uncover the existence of a multitude of topological phase transitions in the magnon sector -- e…
We investigated magnetic and thermodynamic properties of $S$ = 1/2 quasi-one-dimensional antiferromagnet KCuMoO$_4$(OH) through single crystalline magnetization and heat capacity measurements. At zero field, it behaves as a uniform $S$ = 1/2 Heisenberg antiferromagnet with $J$ = 238 K, and exhibits a canted antiferromagnetism below $T_\mathrm{N}$ = 1.52 K. In addition, a magnetic field $H$ induces the anisotropy in magnetization and opens a gap in the spin excitation spectrum. These properties are understood in terms of an effective staggered field induced by staggered g-tensors and Dzyaloshin…
We study the in-plane resistivity anisotropy in the spin-glass phase of the high-$T_{c}$ cuprates, on the basis of holes moving in a spiral spin background. This picture follows from analysis of the extended $t-J$ model with Coulomb impurities. In the variable-range hopping regime the resistivity anisotropy is found to have a maximum value of around 90%, and it decreases with temperature, in excellent agreement with experiments in La$_{2-x}$Sr$_x$CuO$_4$. In our approach the transport anisotropy is due to the non-collinearity of the spiral spin state, rather than an intrinsic tendency of the c…
