Two new tests for exponentiality, of integral and Kolmogorov type, are proposed. They are based on a recent characterization and formed using appropriate V-statistics. Their asymptotic properties are examined and their local Bahadur efficiencies against some common alternatives are found. A class of locally optimal alternatives for each test is obtained. The powers of these tests, for some small sample sizes, are compared with different exponentiality tests.
Recently, the characterization based approach for the construction of goodness of fit tests has become popular. Most of the proposed tests have been designed for complete i.i.d. samples. Here we present the adaptation of the recently proposed exponentiality tests based on equidistribution-type characterizations for the case of randomly censored data. Their asymptotic properties are provided. Besides, we present the results of wide empirical power study including the powers of several recent competitors. This study can be used as a benchmark for future tests proposed for this kind of data.
Mean time to failure in age replacement evaluates the performance and effectiveness of the age replacement policy. In this paper, we propose a test for exponentiality against a trend change in mean time to failure in age replacement. We derive the asymptotic distribution of the test statistics under the null hypothesis to approximate the critical values. We conduct a simulation study to investigate the performance of the proposed test and compare it with some well known tests in the literature.
In this paper a new class of uniformity tests is proposed. It is shown that those tests are applicable to the cases of any simple null hypothesis as well as for the composite null hypothesis of rectangular distributions on arbitrary support. The asymptotic properties of test statistics are examined. The tests are compared with some standard and some recent uniformity tests. For each test the Bahadur efficiencies against some common local alternatives are calculated. A class of locally optimal alternatives is found for each proposed test. The power study is also provided. Some applications in t…
Combining p-values to integrate multiple effects is of long-standing interest in social science and biomedical research. In this paper, we focus on revisiting a classical scenario closely related to meta-analysis, which combines a relatively small (finite and fixed) number of p-values while the sample size for generating each p-value is large (asymptotically goes to infinity). We evaluate a list of traditional and recently developed modified Fisher's methods to investigate their asymptotic efficiencies and finite-sample numerical performance. The result concludes Fisher and adaptively weighted…
Can two separate case-control studies, one about Hepatitis disease and the other about Fibrosis, for example, be combined together? It would be hugely beneficial if two or more separately conducted case-control studies, even for entirely irrelevant purposes, can be merged together with a unified analysis that produces better statistical properties, e.g., more accurate estimation of parameters. In this paper, we show that, when using the popular logistic regression model, the combined/integrative analysis produces a more accurate estimation of the slope parameters than the single case-control s…
We consider the problem of the estimation of the mean function of an inhomogeneous Poisson process when its intensity function is periodic. For the mean integrated squared error (MISE) there is a classical lower bound for all estimators and the empirical mean function attains that lower bound, thus it is asymptotically efficient. Following the ideas of the work by Golubev and Levit, we compare asymptotically efficient estimators and propose an estimator which is second order asymptotically efficient. Second order efficiency is done over Sobolev ellipsoids, following the idea of Pinsker.
Many statistical applications involve models for which it is difficult to evaluate the likelihood, but from which it is relatively easy to sample. Approximate Bayesian computation is a likelihood-free method for implementing Bayesian inference in such cases. We present results on the asymptotic variance of estimators obtained using approximate Bayesian computation in a large-data limit. Our key assumption is that the data are summarized by a fixed-dimensional summary statistic that obeys a central limit theorem. We prove asymptotic normality of the mean of the approximate Bayesian computation …
The main goal of this article is to study how an auxiliary information can be used to improve the efficiency of two famous statistical tests: the $ Z$-test and the chi-square test. Many definitions of auxiliary information can be found in the statistical literature. In this article, the notion of auxiliary information is discussed from a very general point of view and depends on the relevant test. These two statistical tests are modified so that this information is taken into account. It is shown in particular that the efficiency of these new tests is improved in the sense of Pitman's ARE.
