The classical theory of Brownian dynamics follows from coarse-graining the underlying linearized fluctuating hydrodynamics of the solvent. We extend this procedure to globally non-isothermal conditions, requiring only a local thermal equilibration of the solvent. Starting from the conservation laws, we establish the stochastic equations of motion for the fluid momentum fluctuations in the presence of a suspended Brownian particle. These are then contracted to the non-isothermal generalized Langevin description of the suspended particle alone, for which the coupling to stochastic temperature fluctuations is found to be negligible under typical experimental conditions.
The classical theory of Brownian motion rests on fundamental laws of statistical mechanics, such as the equipartition theorem and the fluctuation-dissipation theorem, which are not applicable in non-isothermal situations. We derive the generalized fluctuation-dissipation relations and Langevin equations governing such non-isothermal Brownian motion, including explicit results for the frequency-dependent noise temperature and Brownian thermometry far from equilibrium.
We focus on the dynamics of a Brownian particle whose mass fluctuates. First we show that the behaviour is similar to that of a Brownian particle moving in a fluctuating medium, as studied by Beck [Phys. Rev. Lett. 87 (2001) 180601]. By performing numerical simulations of the Langevin equation, we check the theoretical predictions derived in the adiabatic limit, and study deviations outside this limit. We compare the mass velocity distribution with truncated Tsallis distributions [J. Stat. Phys. 52 (1988) 479] and find excellent agreement if the masses are chi- squared distributed. We also con…
The transport properties of Brownian ratchet was studied in the presence of stochastic intensity noise (SIN) in both overdamped and underdamped regimes. In the overdamped case, analytical solution using the matrix continued fraction method revealed the existence of a maximum current when the noise intensity fluctuates on intermediate time scale regions. Similar effects were observed for the underdamped case by Monte Carlo simulations. The optimal time-correlation for the Brownian transport coincided with the experimentally observed time-correlation of the extrinsic noise in Esherichia coli gen…
We consider a Brownian particle in a harmonic trap. The location of the trap is modulated according to an Ornstein-Uhlenbeck process. We investigate the fluctuation of the work done by the modulated trap on the Brownian particle in a given time interval in the steady state. We compute the large deviation as well as the complete asymptotic form of the probability density function of the work done. The theoretical asymptotic forms of the probability density function are in very good agreement with the numerics. We also discuss the validity of the fluctuation theorem for this system.
We investigate Brownian motion with diffusivity alternately fluctuating between fast and slow states. We assume that sojourn-time distributions of these two states are given by exponential or power-law distributions. We develop a theory of alternating renewal processes to study a relaxation function which is expressed with an integral of the diffusivity over time. This relaxation function can be related to a position correlation function if the particle is in a harmonic potential, and to the self-intermediate scattering function if the potential force is absent. It is theoretically shown that,…
Starting from a microscopic approach and using the formalism of quantum Brownian motion, partition function of a system composed of two separated pieces of anisotropic matter and a fluctuating medium in finite temperature is obtained rigorously. A general expression for fluctuation-induced free energy between the separated anisotropic pieces of matter is obtained and it is shown that in the framework of induced-force, the free energy of mean-force and effective free energy are equivalent.
We investigate the efficiency of an isothermal Brownian work-to-work converter engine, composed of a Brownian particle coupled to a heat bath at a constant temperature. The system is maintained out of equilibrium by using two external time-dependent stochastic Gaussian forces, where one is called load force and the other is called drive force. Work done by these two forces are stochastic quantities. The efficiency of this small engine is defined as the ratio of stochastic work done against load force to stochastic work done by the drive force. The probability density function as well as large …
We investigate the stochastic behavior of a two-temperature Langevin system with non-Markovian thermal reservoirs. The model describes an overdamped Brownian particle in a quadratic potential and coupled to heat baths at different temperatures. The reservoirs are characterized by Gaussian white and colored noises and a dissipation memory kernel. The stationary states present non-trivial average rotational motion influenced by stochastic torques due to harmonic, friction and fluctuating thermal forces. However, the Markovian limit leads to a vanishing average torque produced by fluctuating ther…
Brownian motion of single particles with various masses M and diameters D is studied by molecular dynamics simulations. Besides the momentum auto-correlation function of the Brownian particle the memory function and the fluctuating force which enter the generalized Langevin equation of the Brownian particle are determined and their dependence on mass and diameter are investigated for two different fluid densities. Deviations of the fluctuating force distribution from a Gaussian form are observed for small particle diameters. For heavy particles the deviations of the fluctuating force from the …
We study the statistical properties of many Brownian particles under the We study the statistical properties of many Brownian particles under the influence of both a spatially homogeneous driving force and a periodic potential with period $\ell$ in a two-dimensional space. In particular, we focus on two asymptotic cases, $\ell_{\rm int} \ll \ell$ and $\ell_{\rm int} \gg \ell$, where $\ell_{\rm int}$ represents the interaction length between two particles. We derive fluctuating hydrodynamic equations describing the evolution of a coarse-grained density field defined on scales much larger than $…
The active Brownian particle (ABP) model describes a swimmer, synthetic or living, whose direction of swimming is a Brownian motion. The swimming is due to a propulsion force, and the fluctuations are typically thermal in origin. We present a 2D model where the fluctuations arise from nonthermal noise in a propelling force acting at a single point, such as that due to a flagellum. We take the overdamped limit and find several modifications to the traditional ABP model. Since the fluctuating force causes a fluctuating torque, the diffusion tensor describing the process has a coupling between tr…
We review a series of experimental studies of the thermodynamics of nonequilibrium processes at the microscale. In particular, in these experiments we studied the fluctuations of the thermodynamic properties of a single optically-trapped microparticle immersed in water and in the presence of external random forces. In equilibrium, the fluctuations of the position of the particle can be described by an effective temperature that can be tuned up to thousands of Kelvins. Isothermal and non-isothermal thermodynamic processes that also involve changes in a control parameter were implemented by cont…
We discuss physical and mathematical aspects of the over-damped motion of a Brownian particle in fluctuating potentials. It is shown that such a system can be described quantitatively by fluctuating rates if the potential fluctuations are slow compared to relaxation within the minima of the potential, and if the position of the minima does not fluctuate. Effective rates can be calculated; they describe the long-time dynamics of the system. Furthermore, we show the existence of a stationary solution of the Fokker-Planck equation that describes the motion within the fluctuating potential under s…
Dynamical random walk of classical particle in thermodynamically equilibrium fluctuating medium, - Gaussian random potential field, - is considered in the framework of explicit stochastic representation of deterministic interactions. We discuss corresponding formally exact Langevin equations for the particle's trajectory and show that Marcovian kinetic equation approximation to them is inadequate, - even (and especially) in case of spatially-temporally short-correlated field, - since ignores such actual effects of exponential instability of the trajectory (in respect to small perturbations) as…
We derive generalized Langevin equations for the translational and rotational motion of a heated Brownian particle from the fluctuating hydrodynamics of its non-isothermal solvent. The temperature gradient around the particle couples to the hydrodynamic modes excited by the particle itself so that the resulting noise spectrum is governed by a frequency-dependent temperature. We show how the effective temperatures at which the article coordinates and (angular) velocities appear to be thermalized emerge from this central quantity.
A Brownian particle floating in a narrow corrugated (sinusoidal) channel with fluctuating cross section exhibits non-Gaussian normal diffusion. Its displacements are distributed according to a Gaussian law for very short and asymptotically large observation times, whereas a robust exponential distribution emerges for intermediate observation times of the order of the channel fluctuation correlation time. For intermediate to large observation times the particle undergoes normal diffusion with one and the same effective diffusion constant. These results are analytically interpreted without havin…

The lattice Boltzmann algorithm efficiently simulates the Navier Stokes equation of isothermal fluid flow, but ignores thermal fluctuations of the fluid, important in mesoscopic flows. We show how to adapt the algorithm to include noise, satisfying a fluctuation-dissipation theorem (FDT) directly at lattice level: this gives correct fluctuations for mass and momentum densities, and for stresses, at all wavevectors $k$. Unlike previous work, which recovers FDT only as $k\to 0$, our algorithm offers full statistical mechanical consistency in mesoscale simulations of, e.g., fluctuating colloidal …
The Airy distribution function describes the probability distribution of the area under a Brownian excursion over a unit interval. Surprisingly, this function has appeared in a number of seemingly unrelated problems, mostly in computer science and graph theory. In this paper, we show that this distribution also appears in a rather well studied physical system, namely the fluctuating interfaces. We present an exact solution for the distribution P(h_m,L) of the maximal height h_m (measured with respect to the average spatial height) in the steady state of a fluctuating interface in a one dimensi…
We investigate the ensemble and time averaged mean squared displacements for particle diffusion in a simple model for disordered media by assuming that the local diffusivity is both fluctuating in time and has a deterministic average growth or decay in time. In this study we compare computer simulations of the stochastic Langevin equation for this random diffusion process with analytical results. We explore the regimes of normal Brownian motion as well as anomalous diffusion in the sub- and superdiffusive regimes. We also consider effects of the inertial term on the particle motion. The invest…
Examples of self propulsion in strongly fluctuating environment is abound in nature, e.g., molecular motors and pumps operating in living cells. Starting from Langevin equation of motion, we develop a fluctuating thermodynamic description of self propelled particles using simple models of velocity dependent forces. We derive fluctuation theorems for entropy production and a modified fluctuation dissipation relation, characterizing the linear response at non-equilibrium steady states. We study these notions in a simple model of molecular motors, and in the Rayleigh-Helmholtz and energy-depot mo…
We study fluctuating tilt Brownian ratchets based on fractional subdiffusion in sticky viscoelastic media characterized by a power law memory kernel. Unlike the normal diffusion case the rectification effect vanishes in the adiabatically slow modulation limit and optimizes in a driving frequency range. It is shown also that anomalous rectification effect is maximal (stochastic resonance effect) at optimal temperature and can exhibit a surprisingly good quality. Moreover, subdiffusive current can flow in the counter-intuitive direction upon a change of temperature or driving frequency. The depe…
The over-damped motion of a Brownian particle in an asymmetric, bistable, fluctuating potential shows noise induced stability: For intermediate fluctuation rates the mean occupancy of minima with an energy above the absolute minimum is enhanced. The model works as a detector for potential fluctuations being not too fast and not too slow. This effect occurs due to the different time scales in the problem. We present a detailed analysis of this effect using the exact solution of the Fokker-Planck equation for a simple model. Further we show that for not too fast fluctuations the system can be we…
Quantum Brownian motion, described by the Caldeira-Leggett model, brings insights to understand phenomena and essence of quantum thermodynamics, especially the quantum work and heat associated with their classical counterparts. By employing the phase-space formulation approach, we study the heat distribution of a relaxation process in the quantum Brownian motion model. The analytical result of the characteristic function of heat is obtained at any relaxation time with an arbitrary friction coefficient. By taking the classical limit, such a result approaches the heat distribution of the classic…
We present a study of the noise driven escape of an overdamped Brownian particle moving in a cubic potential profile with a metastable state. We analyze the role of the initial conditions of the particle on the enhancement of the average escape time as a function of the noise intensity for fixed and fluctuating potentials. We observe the noise enhanced stability effect for all the initial unstable states investigated. For a fixed potential we find a peculiar initial condition $x_c$ which separates the set of the initial unstable states in two regions: those which give rise to divergences from …
We demonstrate that a Langevin equation that describes the motion of a Brownian particle under non-equilibrium conditions can be exactly transformed to a special equation that explicitly exhibits the response of the velocity to a time dependent perturbation. This transformation is constructed on the basis of an operator formulation originally used in nonlinear perturbation theory for differential equations by extending it to stochastic analysis. We find that the obtained expression is useful for the calculation of fundamental quantities of the system, and that it provides a physical basis for …
It seems that a stochastic system must be a nonlinear one to observe the phenomenon, noise induced transition. But in the present paper, we have demonstrated that the phenomenon may be observed even in a linear stochastic process where both deterministic and stochastic parts are linear functions of the relevant phase space variables. The shape of the stationary distribution of particles (which are confined in a harmonic potential) may change on increasing the strength of the applied fluctuating magnetic field. The probability density may vary non monotonically with an increase in the coordinat…
The fluctuation-dissipation theorem is a central theorem in nonequilibrium statistical mechanics by which the evolution of velocity fluctuations of the Brownian particle under a fluctuating environment is intimately related to its dissipative behavior. This can be illuminated in particular by an example of Brownian motion in an ohmic environment where the dissipative effect can be accounted for by the first-order time derivative of the position. Here we explore the dynamics of the Brownian particle coupled to a supraohmic environment by considering the motion of a charged particle interacting …
The question how to introduce thermal fluctuations in the equation of motion of a magnetic system is addressed. Using the approach of the fluctuation-dissipation theorem we calculate the properties of the noise for both, the fluctuating field and fluctuating torque (force) representation. In contrast to earlier calculations we consider the general case of a system of interacting magnetic moments without the assumption of axial symmetry. We show that the interactions do not result in any correlations of thermal fluctuations in the field representation and that the same widely used formula can b…
We consider an isothermal machine composed of two Brownian particles (say particle A and B) connected by a harmonic spring. A constant load is attached to particle A, and the particle B is trapped in a harmonic confinement whose minimum is dragged with a constant velocity. Whole system is in contact with the heat bath of a constant temperature. We obtain the distribution of the work done on particle A and particle B, and transient fluctuation theorem for these quantities is tested in the weak coupling limit and for both small and large observation time. Moreover, we show that the transient flu…
A pure fluid at its critical point shows a dramatic slow-down in its dynamics, due to a divergence of the order-parameter susceptibility and the coefficient of heat transport. Under isothermal conditions, however, sound waves provide the only possible relaxation mechanism for order-parameter fluctuations. Here we study the critical dynamics of an isothermal, compressible non-ideal fluid via scaling arguments and computer simulations of the corresponding fluctuating hydrodynamics equations. We show that, below a critical dimension of 4, the order-parameter dynamics of an isothermal fluid effect…
Emergence, optimization and stability of a motor-like motion in a fluctuating environment are analyzed. The emergence of motion is shown to be a general phenomenon. A motor converges to the state with the minimum of effective temperature and with the corresponding minimum in the rate of conformation changes similarly as some stochastic processes converge to the states with minimum diffusion activity. This mechanism is important to bacterial foraging (chemotaxis). This work, therefore, raises an analogy between chemotaxis and the emergence of living-like systems. The implications include the de…
We calculate analytically the stochastic thermodynamic properties of an isothermal Brownian engine driven by a duo of time-periodic forces, including its Onsager coefficients, the stochastic work of each force, and the corresponding stochastic entropy production. We verify the relations between different operational regimes, maximum power, maximum efficiency and minimum dissipation, and reproduce the signature features of the stochastic efficiency. All these results are experimentally tested without adjustable parameters on a colloidal system.
We study the effects of stochastic birth and death processes on the structural phases of systems of active and passive Brownian particles subject to volume exclusion. The total number of particles in the system is a fluctuating quantity, determined by the birth and death parameters, and on the activity of the particles. As the birth and death parameters are varied we find liquid, hexatic and solid phases. For passive particles these phases are found to be spatially homogeneous. For active particles motility-induced phase separation (co-existing hexatic and liquid phases) occurs for large activ…
Symmetries constrain dynamics. We test this fundamental physical principle, experimentally and by molecular dynamics simulations, for a hot Janus swimmer operating far from thermal equilibrium. Our results establish scalar and vectorial steady-state fluctuation theorems and a thermodynamic uncertainty relation that link the fluctuating particle current to its entropy production at an effective temperature. A Markovian minimal model elucidates the underlying non-equilbrium physics.
We study the diffusion of a Brownian particle quadratically coupled to a thermally fluctuating field. In the weak coupling limit, a path-integral formulation allows to compute the effective diffusion coefficient in the cases of an active particle, that tends to suppress the field fluctuations, and of a passive particle, that only undergoes the field fluctuations. We show that the behavior is similar to what was previously found for a linear coupling: an active particle is always slowed down, whereas a passive particle is slowed down in a slow field and accelerated in a fast field. Numerical si…
An alternative derivation of Brownian motion is presented. Instead of supplementing the linearized Navier-Stokes equation with a fluctuating force, we directly assume a Gaussian action functional for solvent velocity fluctuations. Solvating a particle amounts to expelling the solvent and prescribing a boundary condition to the solvent on the interface that is shared with the solute. We study the dynamical effects of this boundary condition on the solvent and derive explicit expressions for the solvent mean flow and velocity correlations. Moreover, we show that the probability to observe solven…
A considerable number of systems have recently been reported in which Brownian yet non-Gaussian dynamics was observed. These are processes characterised by a linear growth in time of the mean squared displacement, yet the probability density function of the particle displacement is distinctly non-Gaussian, and often of exponential (Laplace) shape. This apparently ubiquitous behaviour observed in very different physical systems has been interpreted as resulting from diffusion in inhomogeneous environments and mathematically represented through a variable, stochastic diffusion coefficient. Indee…
We present a detailed study of a Brownian particle driven by Carnot-type refrigerating protocol operating between two thermal baths. Both the underdamped as well as the overdamped limits are investigated. The particle is in a harmonic potential with time-periodic strength that drives the particle cyclically between the baths. Each cycle consists of two isothermal steps at different temperatures and two adiabatic steps connecting them. Besides working as a stochastic refrigerator, it is shown analytically that in the quasistatic regime the system can also act as stochastic heater, depending on …
We develop a theory of fluctuations for Brownian systems with weak long-range interactions. For these systems, there exists a critical point separating a homogeneous phase from an inhomogeneous phase. Starting from the stochastic Smoluchowski equation governing the evolution of the fluctuating density field, we determine the expression of the correlation function of the density fluctuations around a spatially homogeneous equilibrium distribution. In the stable regime, we find that the temporal correlation function of the Fourier components of the density fluctuations decays exponentially rapid…
We discuss the situations under which Brownian yet non-Gaussian (BnG) diffusion can be observed in the model of a particle's motion in a random landscape of diffusion coefficients slowly varying in space. Our conclusion is that such behavior is extremely unlikely in the situations when the particles, introduced into the system at random at $t=0$, are observed from the preparation of the system on. However, it indeed may arise in the case when the diffusion (as described in Ito interpretation) is observed under equilibrated conditions. This paradigmatic situation can be translated into the mode…
The balance held by Brownian motion between temporal regularity and randomness is embodied in a remarkable way by Levy's forgery of continuous functions. Here we describe how this property can be extended to forge arbitrary dependences between two statistical systems, and then establish a new Brownian independence test based on fluctuating random paths. We also argue that this result allows revisiting the theory of Brownian covariance from a physical perspective and opens the possibility of engineering nonlinear correlation measures from more general functional integrals.
We present an insightful ``derivation'' of the Langevin equation and the fluctuation dissipation theorem in the specific context of a heavier particle moving through an ideal gas of much lighter particles. The Newton's Law of motion ($m{\ddot x}=F$) for the heavy particle reduces to a Langevin equation (valid on a coarser time scale) with the assumption that the lighter gas particles follow a Boltzmann velocity distribution. Starting from the kinematics of the random collisions we show that (1) the average force $<F> \propto -{\dot x}$ and (2) the correlation function of the fluctuating force …
At mesoscopic scales electrolyte solutions are modeled by the fluctuating generalized Poisson-Nernst-Planck (PNP) equations [J.-P. Péraud et al., Phys. Rev. F, 1(7):074103, 2016]. However, at length and time scales larger than the Debye scales, electrolytes are effectively electroneutral, and the charged-fluid PNP equations become too stiff to solve numerically. Here we formulate the isothermal incompressible equations of fluctuating hydrodynamics for reactive multispecies mixtures involving charged species in the electroneutral limit, and design a numerical algorithm to solve these equations.…
The validity of Einstein's fluctuation-dissipation relation is discussed in respect to the type of relaxation in an isothermal system. The first model, presuming isothermic fluctuations, leads to the Einstein formula. The second model supposes adiabatic fluctuations and yields another relation between the diffusion coefficient and mobility of a Brownian particle. A new approach to relaxations in quantum systems is also proposed that demonstrates applicability only of the adiabatic model for description of the quantum Brownian dynamics.
A model of Brownian particles with the ability to take up energy from the environment, to store it in an internal depot, and to convert internal energy into kinetic energy of motion, is discussed. The general dynamics outlined in Sect. 2 is investigated for the deterministic and stochastic particle's motion in a non-fluctuating ratchet potential. First, we discuss the attractor structure of the ratchet system by means of computer simulations. Dependent on the energy supply, we find either periodic bound attractors corresponding to localized oscillations, or one/two unbound attractors correspon…
A massive black hole at the center of a dense stellar system, such as a globular cluster or a galactic nucleus, is subject to a random walk due gravitational encounters with nearby stars. It behaves as a Brownian particle, since it is much more massive than the surrounding stars and moves much more slowly than they do. If the distribution function for the stellar velocities is Maxwellian, there is a exact equipartition of kinetic energy between the black hole and the stars in the stationary state. However, if the distribution function deviates from a Maxwellian form, the strict equipartition c…
We study the one-dimensional motion of a Brownian particle inside a confinement described by two reactive boundaries which can partially reflect or absorb the particle. Understanding the effects of such boundaries is important in physics, chemistry and biology. We compute the probability density of the particle displacement exactly, from which we derive expressions for the survival probability and the mean absorption time as a function of the reactive coefficients. Furthermore, using the Feynman-Kac formalism, we investigate the reaction time profile, which is the fluctuating time spent by the…
