This paper surveys some of the known results on $δ$-ideal CR submanifolds in complex space forms, the nearly Kähler $6$-sphere and odd dimensional unit spheres. In addition, the relationship between $δ$-ideal CR submanifolds and critical points of the $λ$-bienergy is mentioned. Some topics on variational problem for the $λ$-bienergy are also presented.
A submanifold in space forms satisfies the well-known DDVV inequality due to De Smet, Dillen, Verstraelen and Vrancken. The submanifold attaining equality in the DDVV inequality at every point is called Wintgen ideal submanifold. As conformal invariant objects, Wintgen ideal submanifolds are studied in this paper using the framework of Möbius geometry. We classify Wintgen ideal submanfiolds of dimension $m>2$ and arbitrary codimension when a canonically defined 2-dimensional distribution $\mathbb{D}$ is integrable. Such examples come from cones, cylinders, or rotational submanifolds over super…
Roughly speaking, an ideal immersion of a Riemannian manifold into a real space form is an isometric immersion which produces the least possible amount of tension from the ambient space at each point of the submanifold. The main purpose of this paper is to completely classify all non-minimal ideal submanifolds of real space forms with type number $\leq 2$.
Wintgen ideal submanifolds in space forms are those ones attaining equality at every point in the so-called DDVV inequality which relates the scalar curvature, the mean curvature and the normal scalar curvature. This property is conformal invariant; hence we study them in the framework of Moebius geometry, and restrict to three dimensional Wintgen ideal submanifolds in S^5. In particular we give Moebius characterizations for minimal ones among them, which are also known as (3-dimensional) austere submanifolds (in 5-dimensional space forms).
A submanifold in a real space form attaining equality in the DDVV inequality at every point is called a Wintgen ideal submanifold. They are invariant objects under the Moebius transformations. In this paper, we classify those Wintgen ideal submanifolds of dimension m>3 which are Moebius homogeneous. There are three classes of non-trivial examples, each related with a famous class of homogeneous minimal surfaces in $S^n$ or $CP^n$: the cones over the Veronese surfaces $S^2$ in $S^n$, the cones over homogeneous flat minimal surfaces in $S^n$, and the Hopf bundle over the Veronese embeddings of $…
Wintgen ideal submanifolds in space forms are those ones attaining equality pointwise in the so-called DDVV inequality which relates the scalar curvature, the mean curvature and the scalar normal curvature. Using the framework of Moebius geometry, we show that in the codimension two case, the mean curvature sphere of the Wintgen ideal submanifold corresponds to an 1-isotropic holomorphic curve in a complex quadric Q. Conversely, any 1-isotropic complex curve in Q describes a 2-parameter family of m-dimensional spheres whose envelope is always a m-dimensional Wintgen ideal submanifold at the re…
Wintgen ideal submanifolds in space forms are those ones attaining equality pointwise in the so-called DDVV inequality which relates the scalar curvature, the mean curvature and the scalar normal curvature. They are Moebius invariant objects. The mean curvature sphere defines a conformal Gauss map into a Grassmann manifold. We show that any Wintgen ideal submanifold has a Riemannian submersion structure over a Riemann surface with the fibers being round spheres. Then the conformal Gauss map is shown to be a super-conformal and harmonic map from the underlying Riemann surface. Some of our previ…
It was proven in [B.-Y. Chen, F. Dillen, J. Van der Veken and L. Vrancken, Curvature inequalities for Lagrangian submanifolds: the final solution, Differ. Geom. Appl. 31 (2013), 808-819] that every Lagrangian submanifold $M$ of a complex space form $\tilde M^{n}(4c)$ of constant holomorphic sectional curvature $4c$ satisfies the following optimal inequality: \begin{align*} δ(2,n-2) \leq \frac{n^2(n-2)}{4(n-1)} H^2 + 2(n-2) c, \end{align*} where $H^2$ is the squared mean curvature and $δ(2,n-2)$ is a $δ$-invariant on $M$. In this paper we classify Lagrangian submanifolds of complex space forms …
In the theory of finite type submanifolds, null 2-type submanifolds are the most simple ones, besides 1-type submanifolds (cf. e.g., [3, 12]). In particular, the classification problems of null 2-type hypersurfaces are quite interesting and of fundamentally important. In this paper, we prove that every $δ$(3)-ideal null 2-type hypersurface in a Euclidean space has constant mean curvature and constant scalar curvature.
We characterize biharmonic anti-invariant surfaces in $3$-dimensional generalized $(κ, μ)$-manifolds with non-zero constant mean curvature by means of the scalar curvature of the ambient space and the mean curvature. In addition, we give a method for constructing infinity many examples of biharmonic submanifolds in a certain $3$-dimensional generalized $(κ, μ)$-manifold. Moreover, we determine $3$-dimensional generalized $(κ, μ)$-manifolds which admit a certain kind of proper biharmonic foliation.
We classify Lagrangian submanifolds of complex space forms, whose second fundamental form can be written in a certain way, depending on a real parameter. For some special values of this parameter, the resulting submanifolds are ideal in the sense that they realize equality in an inequality for a Chen's delta-curvature.
A biconservative submanifold of a Riemannian manifold is a sub- manifold with divergence free stress-energy tensor with respect to bienergy. These are generalizations of biharamonic submanifolds. In 2013, B. Y. Chen and M.I. Munteanu proved that $δ(2)$-ideal and $δ(3)$-ideal biharmonic hypersurfaces in Euclidean space are minimal. In this paper, we generalize this result for $δ(2)$-ideal and $δ(3)$-ideal bisonservative hypersurfaces in Euclidean space. Also, we study $δ(4)$-ideal biconservative hypersurfaces in Euclidean space $\mathbb{E}^{6}$ having constant scalar curvature. We prove that su…
In this note, we give a brief survey on some recent developments of biharmonic submanifolds. After reviewing some recent progress on Chen's biharmonic conjecture, the Generalized Chen's conjecture on biharmonic submanifolds of non-positively curved manifolds, and some classifications of biharmonic submanifolds of spheres, we give a short list of some open problems in this topic.
This is a short, elementary survey article about taut submanifolds. In order to simplify the exposition, we restrict to the case of compact smooth submanifolds of Euclidean or spherical spaces. Some new, partial results concerning taut 4-manifolds are discussed at the end of the text.
The purpose of this short note is to prove the uniqueness of Hamiltonian volume minimizing Lagrangian submanifolds which are Hamiltonian isotopic to RP^n in CP^n modulo isometric group actions.
In this short note, we study the asymptotic property of Huisken's functional for mean curvature flow on the minimal submanifolds of Euclidean space. We prove that the limit of Huisken's functional equals to the extrinsic asymptotic volume ratio on the minimal submanifold of Euclidean space.
In this short note, we study the behavior of Kaher-Ricci flow on Kahler manifolds which contract divisors to smooth submanifolds. We show that the Kahler potentials are Holder continuous and the flow converges sequentially in Gromov-Hausdorff topology to a compact metric space which is homeomorphic to the base manifold.
In this paper we study the short time existence problem for the (generalized) Lagrangian mean curvature flow in (almost) Calabi--Yau manifolds when the initial Lagrangian submanifold has isolated conical singularities modelled on stable special Lagrangian cones. Given a Lagrangian submanifold $F_0:L\rightarrow M$ in an almost Calabi--Yau manifold $M$ with isolated conical singularities at $x_1,...,x_n\in M$ modelled on stable special Lagrangian cones $C_1,...,C_n$ in $\mathbb{C}^m$, we show that for a short time there exist one-parameter families of points $x_1(t),... x_n(t)\in M$ and a one pa…
A very short proof of the following smooth homogeneity theorem of D. Repovs, E. V. Scepin and the author is presented. Let N be a locally compact subset of a smooth manifold M. Assume that for each two points x,y in N there exist their neighborhoods Ux and Uy in M and a diffeomorphism h : Ux \to Uy such that h(x)=y and h (Ux \cap N) = Uy \cap N. Then N is a smooth submanifold of M.
Lagrangian submanifolds of a Kaehler manifold are called Hamiltonian-stationary (or $H$-stationary for short) if it is a critical point of the area functional restricted to compactly supported Hamiltonian variations. In [B. Y. Chen, F. Dillen, L. Verstraelen and L. Vrancken, Lagrangian isometric immersions of a real-space-form $M^{n}(c)$ into a complex-space-form $\tilde{M}^{n}(4c)$, Math. Proc. Cambridge Philo. Soc. 124 (1998), 107-125], an effective method to constructing Lagrangian submanifolds of constant curvature $\varepsilon$ in complex space form $M^n(4\varepsilon)$ was introduced. In …
In this paper we give a short geometric proof of a generalization of a well-known result about reduction of codimension for submanifolds of Riemannian symmetric spaces.
Supercurrents, as introduced by Lagerberg, were mainly motivated as a way to study tropical varieties. Here we will associate a supercurrent to any smooth submanifold of $\R^n$. Positive supercurrents resemble positive currents in complex analysis, but depend on a choice of scalar product on $\R^n$ and reflect the induced Riemannian structure on the submanifold. In this way we can use techniques from complex analysis to study real submanifolds. We illustrate the idea by giving area estimates of minimal manifolds and a monotinicity property of the mean curvature flow. We also illustrate the ide…
