This is the second of a series of three papers examining how viable it is for entanglement to be sustained at high temperatures for quantum systems in thermal equilibrium (Case A), in nonequilibrium (Case B) and in nonequilibrium steady state conditions (Case C). The system we analyze here consists of two coupled quantum harmonic oscillators each interacting with its own bath described by a scalar field, set at temperatures $T_1 > T_2$. For \textit{constant bilinear inter-oscillator coupling} studied here (Case C1) owing to the Gaussian nature, the problem can be solved exactly at arbitrary temperatures even for strong coupling. We find that the valid entanglement criterion in general is not a function of the bath temperature difference, in contrast to thermal transport in the same NESS setting [1]. Thus lowering the temperature of one of the thermal baths does not necessarily help to safeguard the entanglement between the oscillators. Indeed, quantum entanglement will disappear if any one of the thermal baths has a temperature higher than the critical temperature $T_c$. With the Langevin equations derived we give a full display of how entanglement dynamics in this system depends on $T_{1}$, $T_{2}$ , the inter-oscillator coupling and the system-bath coupling strengths. For weak oscillator-bath coupling the critical temperature $T_c$ is about the order of the inverse oscillator frequency, but for strong oscillator-bath coupling it will depend on the bath cutoff frequency. We conclude that in most realistic circumstances, for bosonic systems in NESS with constant bilinear coupling, `hot entanglement' is largely a fiction. In Paper III we will examine the case (C2) of \textit{time-dependent driven coupling } which contains the parametric pumping type described in [2] wherein entanglement was first shown to sustain at high temperatures.
We present a hierarchical equations of motion approach, which allows a numerically exact simulation of nonequilibrium transport in general open quantum systems involving multiple macroscopic bosonic and fermionic environments. The performance of the method is demonstrated for a model of a nanosystem, which involves interacting electronic and vibrational degrees of freedom and is coupled to fermionic and bosonic baths. The results show the intricate interplay of electronic and vibrational degrees of freedom in this nonequilibrium transport scenario for both voltage and thermally driven transpor…
We investigate analytically and numerically the steady-state entanglement and coherence of two coupled qubits each interacting with a local boson or fermion reservoir, based on the Bloch-Redfield master equation beyond the secular approximation. We find that there is non-vanishing steady-state coherence in the nonequilibrium scenario, which grows monotonically with the nonequilibrium condition quantified by the temperature difference or chemical potential difference of the two baths. The steady-state entanglement in general is a non-monotonic function of the nonequilibrium condition as well as…
We derive universal properties of nonlinear response functions of nonequilibrium steady states. In particular, sum rules and asymptotic behaviors are derived. Their consequences are illustrated for nonlinear optical materials and nonlinear electrical conductors.
We investigate the steady state photon transport in a nonequilibrium collective-qubit model. By adopting the noninteracting blip approximation, which is applicable in the strong photon-qubit coupling regime, we describe the essential contribution of indirect qubit-qubit interaction to the population distribution, mediated by the photonic baths. The linear relations of both the optimal flux and noise power with the qubits system size are obtained. Moreover, the inversed power-law style for the finite-size scaling of the optimal photon-qubit coupling strength is exhibited, which is proposed to b…
We study the steady state entanglement and correlations of an open system comprised of two coupled fermions in the equilibrium or nonequilibrium environments and distill the nonequilibrium contribution to the quantum correlations. We show that in the equilibrium condition, the steady-state quantum correlations exhibit non-monotonic behavior, while in the nonequilibrium case, the monotonicity is determined by many parameters. The entanglement vanishes abruptly upon the increase of the temperature (bias) and chemical potential bias, it witnesses a critical chemical potential above which the conc…
Nonequlibrium phase transition of an open Takayama-Lin Liu-Maki chain coupled with two reservoirs is investigated. We will show that solitons connecting two uniform phases are possible, and the amplitude of solitons obeys the same self-consistent equation as that of uniform phases.
We address the question of whether transport coefficients obtained from a unitary closed system setting, i.e., the standard equilibrium Green-Kubo formula, are the same as the ones obtained from a weakly driven nonequilibrium steady-state calculation. We first derive a nonequilibrium Kubo-like expression for the steady-state diffusion constant expressed as a time-integral of either a current or a conserved density nonequilibrium correlation function. This expression has certain advantages over the equilibrium Green-Kubo formula, but is not clear if it gives the same value of the diffusion cons…
We study the nonequilibrium steady state (NESS) in a quantum system in contact with two heat baths at different temperatures. We use a time-independent perturbative expansion with respect to the coupling with the two heat baths to obtain the density matrix for the NESS. In particular, we show an explicit representation of the density matrix for the reflection symmetric and weakly nonequilibrium case. We also calculate the expectation value of the energy current and show that the Kubo formula holds in this case.
In this letter we propose a scheme for the preparation of steady entanglements in bosonic dissipative networks. We describe its implementation in a system of coupled cavities interacting with an engineered reservoir built up of three-level atoms. Emblematic bipartite ($Bell$ and $NOON$) and multipartite $W$-class states can be produced with high fidelity and purity.
Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen steering describes a quantum correlation in addition to entanglement and Bell nonlocality. However, conceptually different from entanglement and Bell nonlocality, quantum steering has an asymmetric definition. Motivated by the asymmetric definition of quantum steering, we study the steerability of two-interacting qubits, which have asymmetric energy levels, coupled with asymmetric environments. The asymmetric (nonequilibrium) environments are two environments with different temperatures or chemical potentials. The Bloch-Redfield equation is applied to study the dynamics…
The understanding of the emergence of equilibrium statistical mechanics has progressed significantly thanks to developments from typicality, canonical and dynamical, and from the eigenstate thermalization hypothesis. Here we focus on a nonequilibrium scenario in which two nonintegrable systems prepared in different states are locally and non-extensively coupled to each other. Using both perturbative analysis and numerical exact simulations of up to 28 spin systems, we demonstrate the typical emergence of nonequilibrium (quasi-)steady current for weak coupling between the subsystems. We also id…
We investigate nonequilibrium energy transfer in a single-site Bose-Hubbard model coupled to two thermal baths. By including a quantum kinetic equation combined with full counting statistics, we investigate the steady state energy flux and noise power. The influence of the nonlinear Bose-Hubbard interaction on the transfer behaviors is analyzed, and the nonmonotonic features are clearly exhibited. Particularly, in the strong on-site repulsion limit, the results become identical with the nonequilibrium spin-boson model. We also extend the quantum kinetic equation to study the geometric-phase-in…
We study entanglement properties in a nonequilibrium steady state of a free-fermion chain, that emerges after connecting two half-chains prepared at different temperatures. The entanglement negativity and the Rényi mutual information between two adjacent intervals scale logarithmically in the system size, with prefactors that we calculate analytically as a function of the bath temperatures. In particular, we show that the negativity and the Rényi mutual information with index $α=1/2$ are described by different prefactors, and thus the two quantities provide inequivalent information about the s…
We develop a general framework for the steady-state response of dissipative quantum systems. We concretely derive three different, but equivalent, forms of the quantum response function. We discuss for each of them the role of the noncommutativity of quantum operators and establish links to the Kubo response theory for closed quantum systems. We show in particular that the equilibrium response vanishes for perturbations that commute with the unperturbed Hamiltonian while the steady-state response does not, highlighting the profound difference between the two.
We calculate a nonequilibrium steady state of a quantum XX chain in the presence of dephasing and driving due to baths at chain ends. The obtained state is exact in the limit of weak driving while the expressions for one- and two-point correlations are exact for an arbitrary driving strength. In the steady state the magnetization profile and the spin current display diffusive behavior. Spin-spin correlation function on the other hand has long-range correlations which though decay to zero in either the thermodynamical limit or for equilibrium driving. At zero dephasing a nonequilibrium phase tr…
We study the nonequilibrium steady state of an infinite chain of free fermions, resulting from an initial state where the two sides of the system are prepared at different temperatures. The mutual information is calculated between two adjacent segments of the chain and is found to scale logarithmically in the subsystem size. This provides the first example of the violation of the area law in a quantum many-body system outside a zero temperature regime. The prefactor of the logarithm is obtained analytically and, furthermore, the same prefactor is shown to govern the logarithmic increase of mut…
A one dimensional XX spin chain of finite length coupled to reservoirs at both ends is solved exactly in terms of a matrix product state ansatz. An explicit representation of matrices of fixed dimension 4 independent of the chain length is found. Expectations of all observables are evaluated, showing that all connected correlations, apart from nearest neighbor z-z, are zero.
We study the entanglement and the Bell nonlocality of a coupled two-qubit system, in which each qubit is coupled with one individual environment. We study how the nonequilibrium environments (with different temperatures or chemical potentials) influence the entanglement and the Bell nonlocality. The nonequilibrium environments can have constructive effects on the entanglement and the Bell nonlocality. Nonequilibrium thermodynamic cost can sustain the thermal energy or particle current and enhance the entanglement and the Bell nonlocality. However, the nonequilibrium conditions (characterized b…
We investigate the nonequilibrium response of quasiperiodic systems to boundary driving. In particular we focus on the Aubry-André-Harper model at its metal-insulator transition and the diagonal Fibonacci model. We find that opening the system at the boundaries provides a transparent and experimentally viable technique to probe its underlying fractality, which is reflected in the fractal spatial dependence of simple observables (such as magnetization) in the nonequilibrium steady state. We also find that the dynamics in the nonequilibrium steady state depends on the length of the chain chosen:…
We investigate the size scaling of the entanglement entropy (EE) in nonequilibrium steady states (NESSs) of a one-dimensional open quantum system with a random potential. It models a mesoscopic conductor, composed of a long quantum wire (QWR) with impurities and two electron reservoirs at zero temperature. The EE at equilibrium obeys the logarithmic law. However, in NESSs far from equilibrium the EE grows anomalously fast, obeying the `quasi volume law,' although the conductor is driven by the zero-temperature reservoirs. This anomalous behavior arises from both the far from equilibrium condit…
We show that typicality holds for a class of nonequilibrium systems, i.e., nonequilibrium steady states (NESSs): almost all the pure states properly sampled from a certain Hilbert space well represent a NESS and characterize its intrinsic thermal nature. We clarify the relevant Hilbert space from which the pure states are to be sampled, and construct practically all the typical pure NESSs. The scattering approach leads us to the natural extension of the typicality for equilibrium systems. Each pure NESS correctly yields the expectation values of observables given by the standard ensemble appro…
The nonequilibrium steady state (NESS) of a quantum network is central to a host of physical and biological scenarios. Examples include natural processes such as vision and photosynthesis, as well as technical devices such as photocells, both activated by incoherent light (e.g. sunlight) and leading to quantum transport. Here, a completely general approach to defining components of a quantum network in the NESS, and obtaining rates of processes between these components is provided. Quantum effects are explicitly included throughout, both in (a) defining network components via projection operat…
We suggest a generalisation of the expression of the nonequilibrium density matrix obtained by Hershfield's method for the cases where both heat and charge steady state currents are present in a quantum open system. The finite-size quantum system, connected to two temperature and particle reservoirs, is driven out of equilibrium by the presence of both a temperature gradient and a chemical potential gradient between the two reservoirs. We show that the NE density matrix is given by a generalised Gibbs-like ensemble, and is in full agreement with the general results of the McLennan-Zubarev none…
On one-dimensional two-way infinite lattice system, a property of stationary (space-) translationally invariant states with nonvanishing current expectations are investigated. We consider GNS representation with respect to such a state, on which we have a group of space-time translation unitary operators. We show, by applying Goldstone-theorem-like argument, that spectrum of the unitary operators, energy-momentum spectrum with respect to the state, has a singularity at the origin.
We discuss current carrying non-equilibrium steady state of an open fermionic Hubbard chain that is strongly driven by markovian incoherent processes localized at the chain ends. An explicit form of exact many-body density operator for any value of the coupling parameter is presented. The structure of a matrix product form of the solution is encoded in terms of a novel diagrammatic technique which should allow for generalization to other integrable non-equillibrium models.
We study how translationally invariant couplings of many-particle systems and nonequilibrium baths can be used to rectify particle currents, for which we consider minimal setups to realize bath-induced currents in nonequilibrium steady states of one-dimensional open fermionic systems. We first analyze dissipative dynamics associated with a nonreciprocal Lindblad operator and identify a class of Lindblad operators that are sufficient to acquire a unidirectional current. We show that unidirectional particle transport can in general occur when a Lindblad operator is reciprocal provided that the i…
The gradient descent approach is the key ingredient in variational quantum algorithms and machine learning tasks, which is an optimization algorithm for finding a local minimum of an objective function. The quantum versions of gradient descent have been investigated and implemented in calculating molecular ground states and optimizing polynomial functions. Based on the quantum gradient descent algorithm and Choi-Jamiolkowski isomorphism, we present approaches to simulate efficiently the nonequilibrium steady states of Markovian open quantum many-body systems. Two strategies are developed to ev…
The existence of quasi-long range order is demonstrated in nonequilibrium steady states in isotropic $XY$ spin chains including of two types of additional terms that each generate a gap in the energy spectrum. The system is driven out of equilibrium by initializing a domain-wall magnetization profile through application of an external magnetic field and switching off the magnetic field at the same time the energy gap is activated. An energy gap is produced by either applying a staggered magnetic field in the $z$ direction or introducing a modulation to the $XY$ coupling. The magnetization, spi…
Dissipative preparation of a pure steady state usually involves a commutative action of a coherent and a dissipative dynamics on the target state. Namely, the target pure state is an eigenstate of both the coherent and dissipative parts of the dynamics. We show that working in the Zeno regime, i.e. for infinitely large dissipative coupling, one can generate a pure state by a non commutative action, in the above sense, of the coherent and dissipative dynamics. A corresponding Zeno regime pureness criterion is derived. We illustrate the approach, looking at both its theoretical and applicative a…
Explicit matrix product ansatz is presented, in first two orders in the (weak) coupling parameter, for the non-equilibrium steady state of the homogeneous, nearest neighbor Heisenberg XXZ spin-1/2 chain driven by Lindblad operators which act only at the edges of the chain. The first order of the density operator becomes in thermodynamic limit an exact pseudo-local conservation law and yields -- via Mazur inequality -- a rigorous lower bound on the high temperature spin Drude weight. Such Mazur bound is a non-vanishing fractal function of the anisotropy parameter Delta for |Delta|<1.
Laser technology has developed and accelerated photo-induced nonequilibrium physics from both scientific and engineering viewpoints. The Floquet engineering, i.e., controlling material properties and functionalities by time-periodic drives, is a forefront of quantum physics of light-matter interaction, but limited to ideal dissipationless systems. For the Floquet engineering extended to a variety of materials, it is vital to understand the quantum states emerging in a balance of the periodic drive and energy dissipation. Here we derive the general description for nonequilibrium steady states (…
An exact and explicit ladder-tensor-network ansatz is presented for the non-equilibrium steady state of an anisotropic Heisenberg XXZ spin-1/2 chain which is driven far from equilibrium with a pair of Lindblad operators acting on the edges of the chain only. We show that the steady-state density operator of a finite system of size n is - apart from a normalization constant - a polynomial of degree 2n-2 in the coupling constant. Efficient computation of physical observables is faciliated in terms of a transfer operator reminiscent of a classical Markov process. In the isotropic case we find cos…
Nonequilibrium steady states (NESSs) in periodically driven dissipative quantum systems are vital in Floquet engineering. We develop a general theory for high-frequency drives with Lindblad-type dissipation to characterize and analyze NESSs based on the high-frequency (HF) expansion with linear algebraic numerics and without numerically solving the time evolution. This theory shows that NESSs can deviate from the Floquet-Gibbs state depending on the dissipation type. We show the validity and usefulness of the HF-expansion approach in concrete models for a diamond nitrogen-vacancy (NV) center, …
