As an application we prove $KK$-equivalence between full and reduced amalgamated free products of C$^*$-algebras under a strengthened variant of `relative nuclearity'.

For any reduced amalgamated free product $\mathrm{C}^*$-algebra $(A,E)=(A_1, E_1) \ast_D (A_2,E_2)$, we introduce and study a canonical ambient $\mathrm{C}^*$-algebra $Δ\mathbf{T}(A,E)$ of $A$ which generalizes the crossed product arising from the canonical action of an amalgamated free product group on the compactification of the associated Bass--Serre tree. We prove that any reduced amalgamated free product C*-algebra is KK-equivalent to the corresponding full amalgamated free product C*-algebra. The main ingredient of its proof is Julg--Valette's geometric construction of Fredholm modules with Connes's view for representation theory of operator algebras.
The notion of sofic equivalence relation was introduced by Gabor Elek and Gabor Lippner. Their technics employ some graph theory. Here we define this notion in a more operator algebraic context, starting from Connes' embedding problem, and prove the equivalence of this two definitions. We introduce a notion of sofic action for an arbitrary group and prove that amalgamated product of sofic actions over amenable groups is again sofic. We also prove that amalgamated product of sofic groups over an amenable subgroup is again sofic.
We prove a long exact sequence in KK-theory for both full and reduced amalgamated free products in the presence of conditional expectations. In the course of the proof, we established the KK-equivalence between the full amalgamated free product of two unital C*-algebras and a newly defined reduced amalgamated free product that is valid even for non GNS-faithful conditional expectations. Our results unify, simplify and generalize all the previous results obtained before by Cuntz, Germain and Thomsen.

We show that there is a functor from the category of positive admissible ternary rings to the category of $*$-algebras, which induces an isomorphism of partially ordered sets between the families of $C^*$-norms on the ternary ring and its corresponding $*$-algebra. We investigate Cartan subalgebras in nontracial amalgamated free product von Neumann algebras $M_1 \ast_B M_2$ over an amenable von Neumann subalgebra $B$. First, we settle the problem of the absence of Cartan subalgebra in arbitrary free product von Neumann algebras. Namely, we show that any nonamenable free product von Neumann algebra $(M_1, φ_1) \ast (M_2, φ_2)$ with respect to faithful normal states has no Cartan subalgebra. We study Cartan subalgebras in the context of amalgamated free product II$_1$ factors and obtain several uniqueness and non-existence results. We introduce the notion of continuous orbit equivalence for partial dynamical systems, and give an equivalent characterization in terms of Cartan-isomorphisms for partial C*-crossed products. Both graph C*-algebras and semigroup C*-algebras can be described as C*-algebras attached to partial dynamical systems. We obtain new Bass-Serre type rigidity results for ${\rm II_1}$ equivalence relations and their von Neumann algebras, coming from free ergodic actions of free products of groups on the standard probability space. As an application, we show that any non-amenable factor arising as an amalgamated free product of von Neumann algebras $\mathcal{M}_1 \ast_B \mathcal{M}_2$ over an abelian von Neumann algebra $B$, is prime, i.e. cannot be written as a tensor product of diffuse factors. This gives, both in the type ${\rm II_1}$ and in the type ${\rm III}$ case, new examples of prime factors.
In this paper we establish a direct connection between stable approximate unitary equivalence for $*$-homomorphisms and the topology of the KK-groups which avoids entirely C*-algebra extension theory and does not require nuclearity assumptions. We prove that for any free ergodic nonsingular nonamenable action Γ \actson (X,μ) of all Γ in a large class of groups including all hyperbolic groups, the associated group measure space factor $L^\infty(X) \rtimes Γ$ has L^\infty(X) as its unique Cartan subalgebra, up to unitary conjugacy. This generalizes the probability measure preserving case that was established in [PV12]. We also prove primeness and indecomposability results for such crossed products, for the corresponding orbit equivalence relations and for arbitrary amalgamated free products $M_1 *_B M_2$ over a subalgebra B of type I.
Starting from a (small) rigid C$^*$-tensor category $\mathscr{C}$ with simple unit, we construct von Neumann algebras associated to each of its objects. These algebras are factors and can be either semifinite (of type II$_1$ or II$_\infty$, depending on whether the spectrum of the category is finite or infinite) or they can be of type III$_λ$, $λ\in (0,1]$.
