We discuss the problem of regularizing correlators in conformal field theories. The only way to do it in coordinate space is to interpret them as distributions. Unfortunately except for the simplest cases we do not have tabulated mathematical results. The way out we pursue here is to go to momentum space and use Feynman diagram techniques and their regularization methods. We focus on the energy-momentum tensor correlators and, to gain insight, we compute and regularize 2-point functions in 2d with various techniques both in coordinate space and in momentum space, obtaining the same results. Then we do the same for 2-point functions in 4d. Finally we turn to 3-point function in 4d, and concentrate on the parity-odd part. We derive in particular the regularized trace and divergence of the energy-momentum tensor in a chiral fermion model. We discuss the problems related to the parity-odd trace anomaly.
We show that general parity-violating 3d conformal field theories show a double copy structure for momentum space 3-point functions of conserved currents, stress tensor and marginal scalar operators. Splitting up the CFT correlator into two parts - called homogeneous and non-homogeneous - we show that double copy relations exist for each part separately. We arrive at similar conclusions regarding double copy structures using tree-level correlators of massless fields in $dS_4$. We also discuss the flat space limit of these correlators. We further extend the double copy analysis to correlators i…
We analyze the mode stability of odd-parity perturbations of black holes with linearly time-dependent scalar hair in shift-symmetric Horndeski theories. We show that a large class of black hole solutions in these theories suffer from ghost or gradient instability, while there are some classes of solutions that are stable under linear odd-parity perturbations in the context of mode analysis.
An analytical proof of the existence of negative modes in the odd--parity perturbation sector is given for all known non-abelian Einstein--Yang--Mills black holes. The significance of the normalizability condition in the functional stability analysis is emphasized. The role of the odd--parity negative modes in the sphaleron interpretation of the Bartnik--McKinnon solutions is discussed.
In this paper we use conformal field theory techniques to constrain the form of the correlations functions of an inflationary scalar-vector model described by the interaction term $f_1(ϕ)F_{μν}F^{μν} + f_2(ϕ)\tilde{F}_{μν}F^{μν}$. We use the fact that the conformal group is the relevant symmetry group acting on super horizon scales in an inflationary de Sitter background. As a result, we find that super horizon conformal symmetry, constraints the form of the coupling functions $f_1, f_2$ to be homogeneous functions of the same degree. We derive the general form of the correlators involving sca…
Consistency with position space OPE limit requires momentum space CFT correlators to have only total energy singularity. We show that this requirement gives a simple proof of the known result that the parity-odd structure cannot exist for three-point correlators of exactly conserved currents with spins $s_i,s_j,s_k$, when triangle inequality $s_i\le s_j+s_k$ is violated. We also show that even for parity even correlation functions the properties are different inside and outside the triangle inequality. It was previously shown that if we allow for weakly broken higher spin symmetry, parity-odd …
We develop the connection between intergalactic helical magnetic fields and parity odd signatures in the diffuse gamma ray sky. We find that the location and the amplitude of a peak in a parity odd correlator, $Q(R)$, can be used to infer the normal and helical power spectra of the intergalactic magnetic field. When applied to Fermi-LAT data, the amplitude of the observed peak in $Q(R)$ gives $\sim 10^{-14}~{\rm G}$ intergalactic magnetic field strength, which is consistent with an earlier independent estimate that only used the peak location (Tashiro et al. 2014). We discuss features in the o…
We take a Dirac field non-minimally coupled to the gravitational field within the framework of the Poincaré gauge theory of gravity with torsion and curvature. We study the subcase of "weak" gravity, that is, the gravitational Lagrangian depends only linearly on the curvature and quadratically on the torsion. We include all pieces in curvature and torsion that are of odd parity. The second field equation of gravity is derived by varying the Lorentz connection. We solve it with respect to the torsion and decompose the first field equation of gravity and the Dirac equation into Einsteinian piece…
We study the stability under linear odd-parity perturbations of static spherically symmetric black holes in Horndeski gravity. We derive the master equation for these perturbations and obtain the conditions of no-ghost and Laplacian instability. In order for the black hole solutions to be stable, we study their generalized "Regge-Wheeler potential". It turns out that the problem is reduced to an algebraic problem where three functions characterizing the black hole should be positive outside the horizon to prove the stability. We found that these conditions are similar to the no-ghost and Lapla…
In this note we present a simple method of constructing general conformally invariant three point functions of operators of various spins in three dimensions. Upon further imposing current conservation conditions, we find new parity violating structures for the three point functions involving either the stress-energy tensor, spin one currents, or higher spin currents. We find that all parity preserving structures for conformally invariant three point functions of higher spin conserved currents can be realized by free fields, whereas there is at most one parity violating structure for three poi…

In this paper we relate the parity-odd part of two and three point correlation functions in theories with exactly conserved or weakly broken higher spin symmetries to the parity-even part which can be computed from free theories. We also comment on higher point functions. The well known connection of CFT correlation functions with de-Sitter amplitudes in one higher dimension implies a relation between parity-even and parity-odd amplitudes calculated using non-minimal interactions such as ${\mathcal W}^3$ and ${\mathcal W}^2 {\widetilde {\mathcal W}}$. In the flat-space limit this implies a rel…
We use lattice regularization to study the flow of the flavor-triplet fermion current central charge $C^f_J$ from its free field value in the ultraviolet limit to its conformal value in the infrared limit of the parity-invariant three-dimensional QED with two flavors of two-component fermions. The dependence of $C^f_J$ on the scale is weak with a tendency to be below the free field value at intermediate distances. Our numerical data suggests that the flavor-triplet fermion current and the topological current correlators become degenerate within numerical errors in the infra-red limit, thereby …
This work completes the classification of the cubic vertices for arbitrary spin massless bosons in three dimensions started in a previous companion paper by constructing parity-odd vertices. Similarly to the parity-even case, there is a unique parity-odd vertex for any given triple $s_1\geq s_2\geq s_3\geq 2$ of massless bosons if the triangle inequalities are satisfied ($s_1<s_2+s_3$) and none otherwise. These vertices involve two (three) derivatives for odd (even) values of the sum $s_1+s_2+s_3$. A non-trivial relation between parity-even and parity-odd vertices is found. Similarly to the pa…
We construct superconformal invariants in superspace which are used to build 3-point correlators of spinning operators in general $\cal{N}=2$ superconformal field theories in three dimensions. Our systematic analysis includes various relations between these invariants and provides a minimal set of parity-even and parity-odd invariants which is further used to construct general 3-point functions in any 3d $\cal{N}=2$ SCFT. For conserved (super)currents, we explicitly compute various 3-point functions using Wick contractions in the free field case, and express them in terms of the constructed pa…
We derive the odd parity perturbation equation in scalar-tensor theories with a non minimal kinetic coupling sector of the general Horndeski theory, where the kinetic term is coupled to the metric and the Einstein tensor. We derive the potential of the perturbation, by identifying a master function and switching to tortoise coordinates. We then prove the mode stability under linear odd- parity perturbations of hairy black holes in this sector of Horndeski theory, when a cosmological constant term in the action is included. Finally, we comment on the existence of slowly rotating black hole solu…
We study the parity-odd sector of 3-point functions comprising of scalar operators and conserved currents in conformal field theories in momentum space. We use momentum space conformal Ward identities as well as spin-raising and weight-shifting operators to fix the form of these correlators. We discuss in detail the regularisation of divergences and their renormalisation using specific counter-terms.
We examine the cosmological correlators induced by the simultaneous breaking of parity and of statistical isotropy, e.g., in presence of the coupling ${\cal L} = f(ϕ) ( - \frac{1}{4} F^2 + \fracγ{4} F \tilde{F} )$ between the inflaton $ϕ$ and a vector field with vacuum expectation value ${\bf A}$. For a suitably chosen function $f$, the energy in the vector field $ρ_{\rm A}$ does not decay during inflation. This results in nearly scale-invariant signatures of broken statistical isotropy and parity. Specifically, we find that the scalar-scalar correlator of primordial curvature perturbations in…
One of the interesting features about field theories in odd dimensions is the induction of parity violating terms and well-defined {\em finite} topological actions via quantum loops if a fermion mass term is originally present and conversely. Aspects of this issue are illustrated for electrodynamics in 2+1 and 4+1 dimensions. (3 uuencoded Postscript Files are appended at the end of the TexFile.)
We show that the presence of parity-odd terms in the conductivity (or, in other words, in the polarization tensor of Dirac quasiparticles in graphene) leads to rotation of polarization of the electromagnetic waves passing through suspended samples of graphene. Parity-odd Chern-Simons type contributions appear in external magnetic field, giving rise to a quantum Faraday effect (though other sources of parity-odd effects may also be discussed). The estimated order of the effect is well above the sensitivity limits of modern optical instruments.
We evaluate the parity-odd part of the effective action due to massive Dirac fermions on a $S^2 \times S^1$ manifold, minimally coupled to an external Abelian gauge field. We do that for a special class of gauge-field configurations, which is specially suitable to the study of the behaviour of the fermionic determinant under large gauge field configurations, which are allowed by the space-time geometry.
This work examines the finite temperature properties of the CPT-even and parity-odd electrodynamics of the standard model extension. We start from the partition function written into the functional integral formalism in Ref. \cite{Finite}. After specializing the Lorentz-violating tensor $ W_{ανρφ}$ for the nonbirefringent and parity-odd coefficients, the partition function is explicitly carry out, showing that it is a power of the Maxwell's partition function. Also, it is observed that the LIV coefficients induce an anisotropy in the black body angular energy density distribution. The Planck's…
We calculate the exact parity odd part of the effective action ($Γ_{odd}^{2d+1}$) for massive Dirac fermions in 2d+1 dimensions at finite temperature, for a certain class of gauge field configurations. We consider first Abelian external gauge fields, and then we deal with the case of a non-Abelian gauge group containing an Abelian U(1) subgroup. For both cases, it is possible to show that the result depends on topological invariants of the gauge field configurations, and that the gauge transformation properties of $Γ_{odd}^{2d+1}$ depend only on those invariants and on the winding number of th…
In scalar-vector-tensor theories with $U(1)$ gauge invariance, it was recently shown that there exists a new type of hairy black hole (BH) solutions induced by a cubic-order scalar-vector interaction. In this paper, we derive conditions for the absence of ghosts and Laplacian instabilities against odd-parity perturbations on a static and spherically symmetric background for most general $U(1)$ gauge-invariant scalar-vector-tensor theories with second-order equations of motion. We apply those conditions to hairy BH solutions arising from the cubic-order coupling and show that the odd-parity sta…
In this paper we use the spinor-helicity formalism to calculate 3-point functions involving scalar operators and spin-$s$ conserved currents in general 3d CFTs. In spinor-helicity variables we notice that the parity-even and the parity-odd parts of a correlator are related. Upon converting spinor-helicity answers to momentum space, we show that correlators involving spin-$s$ currents can be expressed in terms of some simple conformally invariant conserved structures. This in particular allows us to understand and separate out contact terms systematically, especially for the parity-odd case. We…
We present numerical evidences using overlap fermions for a scale-invariant behavior of parity-invariant three-dimensional QED with two flavors of massless two-component fermions. Using finite-size scaling of the low-lying eigenvalues of the massless anti-Hermitian overlap Dirac operator, we rule out the presence of bilinear condensate and estimate the mass anomalous dimension. The eigenvectors associated with these low-lying eigenvalues suggest critical behavior in the sense of a metal-insulator transition. We show that there is no mass gap in the scalar and vector correlators in the infinite…
We analyse the parity-odd ("type P") surface anomalies of the energy-momentum tensor correlators in conformal field theories, with an emphasis on d=4 and d=3 dimensional spacetimes. Using cohomology analysis we construct the expression for the most general P-type surface trace anomaly on a singular 2-dimensional surface in 4-dimensional bulk spacetimes. As an important example, we specialise to the case when the singular surface is a conical defect and show that the bulk P-type Pontryagin trace anomaly induces such a surface trace anomaly. We show that this conical type P surface trace anomaly…
In Einstein-Aether theory, we study the stability of black holes against odd-parity perturbations on a spherically symmetric and static background. For odd-parity modes, there are two dynamical degrees of freedom arising from the tensor gravitational sector and Aether vector field. We derive general conditions under which neither ghosts nor Laplacian instabilities are present for these dynamical fields. We apply these results to concrete black hole solutions known in the literature and show that some of those solutions can be excluded by the violation of stability conditions. The exact Schwarz…
We use Schwinger's proper time method to compute the parity odd contributions to the U(1) current and energy-momentum tensor of an ideal gas of fermions in 2+1 dimensions in the presence of static gauge and gravitational backgrounds. From these results the equilibrium partition function at first order in the derivative expansion is explicitly obtained by integration. The form of the computed partition function is consistent with general arguments based on Kaluza-Klein and gauge invariance.
We search for a direction in the sky that exhibits parity symmetry under reflections through a plane. We use the natural estimator, which compares the power in even and odd $\ell+m$ multipoles, and apply minimal blind masking of outliers to the ILC map in order to avoid large errors in the reconstruction of multipoles. The multipoles of the cut sky are calculated both naively and by using the covariance inversion method and we estimate the significance of our results using $Λ$CDM simulations. Focusing on low multipoles, $2\leq \ell \leq \ell_{\max}$ with $\ell_{\max}=5,6$ or even 7, we find tw…
We consider relativistic non-Abelian superfluids, where the expectation value of the global symmetry currents relate space and internal indices, thus creating a "locked" phase. Locking a superfluid with SU(2) internal symmetry in 2+1 dimensions breaks parity spontaneously, and introduces parity-odd terms in the constitutive relations. We show that there are qualitatively different extensions of the rest frame locking to non-zero velocities. We construct the resulting superfluid hydrodynamics up to the first derivative order. Using an expansion close to the critical point, we estimate the ratio…
Cosmological observations on the largest scales exhibit a solid record of unexpected anomalies and alignments, apparently pointing towards a large scale violation of statistical isotropy. These include a variety of CMB measurements, as well as alignments of quasar polarisation vectors. In this paper we explore the possibility that several of the aforementioned large scale correlations are in fact not independent, and can be understood in a coherent way within the framework of a parity odd local Universe, and ultimately related to the nature of Dark Energy and its interactions with light.
We observe that an anti-symplectic manifold locally always admits a parity structure. The parity structure can be viewed as a complex-like structure on the manifold. This induces an odd metric and its Levi-Civita connection, and thereby a new notion of an odd Kaehler geometry. Oversimplified, just to capture the idea, the bosonic variables are ``holomorphic'', while the fermionic variables are ``anti-holomorphic''. We find that an odd Kaehler manifold in this new ``complex'' sense has a nilpotent odd Laplacian iff it is Ricci-form-flat. The local cohomology of the odd Laplacian is derived. An …
