We present parallax observations and a detailed model atmosphere analysis of 54 cool and ultracool ($T_{\rm eff}$ < 4000 K) white dwarfs (WDs) in the solar neighbourhood. For the first time, a large number of cool and ultracool WDs have distance and tangential velocities measurements available. Our targets have distances ranging from 21 pc to >100 pc, and include five stars within 30 pc. Contrary to expectations, all but two of them have tangential velocities smaller than 150 km s$^{-1}$ thus suggesting Galactic disc membership. The oldest WDs in this sample have WD cooling ages of 10 Gyr, providing a firm lower limit to the age of the thick disc population. Many of our targets have uncharacteristically large radii, indicating that they are low mass WDs. It appears that we have detected the brighter population of cool and ultracool WDs near the Sun. The fainter population of ultracool CO-core WDs remain to be discovered in large numbers. The Large Synoptic Survey Telescope should find these elusive, more massive ultracool WDs in the solar neighbourhood.
We report the identification of LSR J0745+2627 in the United Kingdom InfraRed Telescope Infrared Deep Sky Survey (UKIDSS) Large Area Survey (LAS) as a cool white dwarf with kinematics and age compatible with the thick-disk/halo population. LSR J0745+2627 has a high proper motion (890 mas/yr) and a high reduced proper motion value in the J band (H_J=21.87). We show how the infrared-reduced proper motion diagram is useful for selecting a sample of cool white dwarfs with low contamination. LSR J0745+2627 is also detected in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) and the Wide-field Infrared Survey Ex…
Studies of cool white dwarfs in the solar neighbourhood have placed a limit on the age of the Galactic disk of 8-9 billion years. However, determining their cooling ages requires the knowledge of their effective temperatures, masses, radii, and atmospheric composition. So far, these parameters could only be inferred for a small number of ultracool white dwarfs for which an accurate distance is known, by fitting their spectral energy distributions (SEDs) in conjunction with a theoretical mass-radius relation. However, the mass-radius relation remains largely untested, and the derived cooling ag…
A recent analysis of the 100 pc white dwarf sample in the SDSS footprint demonstrated for the first time the existence of a well defined ultracool -- or IR-faint -- white dwarf sequence in the Hertzsprung-Russell diagram. Here we take advantage of this discovery to enlarge the IR-faint white dwarf sample threefold. We expand our selection to the entire Pan-STARRS survey footprint as well as the Montreal White Dwarf Database 100 pc sample, and identify 37 candidates with strong flux deficits in the optical. We present follow-up Gemini optical spectroscopy of 30 of these systems, and confirm all…
High resolution spectroscopy of the lowest-mass stars and brown dwarfs reveals their origins, multiplicity, compositions and physical properties, with implications for the star formation and chemical evolution history of the Milky Way. We motivate the need for high-resolution, infrared spectroscopic surveys to reach these faint sources.
We report the detection of the likely companion of the binary millisecond pulsar J0740+6620 with the Gran Telescopio Canarias in the $r'$ and $i'$ bands. The position of the detected starlike source coincides with the pulsar coordinates within the 1$σ$ uncertainty of $\approx$ 0.2 arcsec. Its magnitudes are $r'=26.51\pm0.17$ and $i'=25.49\pm0.15$. Comparing the data with the white dwarf cooling tracks suggests that it can be an ultracool helium-atmosphere white dwarf with the temperature $\lesssim$ 3500 K and cooling age $\gtrsim$ 5 Gyr. The age is consistent with the pulsar characteristic age…
We use Kepler K2 Campaign 4 short-cadence (one-minute) photometry to measure white light flares in the young, moving group brown dwarfs 2MASS J03350208+2342356 (2M0335+23) and 2MASS J03552337+1133437 (2M0355+11), and report on long-cadence (thirty-minute) photometry of a superflare in the Pleiades M8 brown dwarf CFHT-PL-17. The rotation period (5.24 hr) and projected rotational velocity ($45$ km s$^{-1}$) confirm 2M0335+23 is inflated ($R \ge 0.20 R_\odot$) as predicted for a $0.06M_\odot$, 26-Myr old brown dwarf $β$Pic moving group member. We detect 22 white light flares on 2M0335+23. The fla…
We present the results of a study to discover prospective new white dwarf-L dwarf binaries as identified by their near-infrared excesses in the UKIDSS catalogue. We obtained optical spectra to validate the white dwarf nature for 22 of the candidate primary stars, confirming ten as white dwarfs and determining their effective temperatures and gravities. For all ten white dwarfs we determined that the near-infrared excess was indeed indicative of a cool companion. Six of these are suggestive of late M dwarf companions, and three are candidate L dwarf companions, with one straddling the M$-$L bou…
We report the white light flare rates for 10 ultracool dwarfs (UCDs) using \textit{Kepler K2} short cadence data. Among our sample stars, two have spectral type M6, three are M7, three are M8 and two are L0. Most of our targets are old low mass stars. We identify a total of 283 flares in all of the stars in our sample, with \textit{Kepler} energies in the range log \textit{E$_{Kp}$} $\sim$(29 - 33.5) erg. Using the maximum-likelihood method of line fitting, we find that the flare frequency distribution (FFD) for each star in our sample follows a power law with slope -$α$ in range -(1.3-2.0). W…
Kepler K2 long cadence data are used to study white light flares in a sample of 45 L dwarfs. We identified 11 flares on 9 L dwarfs with equivalent durations of (1.3 - 198) hr and total (UV/optical/IR) energies of $\geq$0.9 $\times$ 10$^{32}$ erg. Two superflares with energies of $>$10$^{33}$ erg were detected on an L5 dwarf: this is the coolest object so far on which flares have been identified. The larger superflare on this L5 dwarf has an energy of 4.6$\times$ 10$^{34}$ ergs and an amplitude of $>$300 times the photospheric level: so far, this is the largest amplitude flare detected by the $…
We present the detection of a $ΔV\sim$ -10 flare from the ultracool L2.5 dwarf ULAS J224940.13-011236.9 with the Next Generation Transit Survey (NGTS). The flare was detected in a targeted search of late-type stars in NGTS full-frame images and represents one of the largest flares ever observed from an ultracool dwarf. This flare also extends the detection of white-light flares to stars with temperatures below 2000 K. We calculate the energy of the flare to be $3.4^{+0.9}_{-0.7}\times10^{33}$erg, making it an order of magnitude more energetic than the Carrington event on the Sun. Our data show…
We report on K2 Campaign 8 measurements of a huge white light flare on the L1 dwarf SDSSp J005406.55-003101.8 (EPIC 220186653). The source is a typical L1 dwarf at a distance of $\sim50$ pc, probably an old hydrogen-burning star rather than a young brown dwarf. In the long (30-minute) cadence photometry, the flare peak is 21 times the flux of the stellar photosphere in the broad optical Kepler filter, which we estimate corresponds to $ΔV \approx -7.1$. The total equivalent duration of the flare is 15.4 hr. We estimate the total bolometric energy of the flare was $4 \times 10^{33}$ erg, more po…
We report the discovery of a magnetic white dwarf which shows periodic variability with P=110 min, color-dependent amplitudes and a transient phase shift in the blue compared to the red lightcurve - a previously unknown type of variability for this type of object. We attribute the variations either to a close ultracool (thus far undetected) companion or, more likely, to magnetic spots with unusual temperature structure.
Due to their high photospheric density, cool helium-rich white dwarfs (particularly DZ, DQpec and ultracool) are often poorly described by current atmosphere models. As part of our ongoing efforts to design atmosphere models suitable for all cool white dwarfs, we investigate how the ionization ratio of heavy elements and the H$_2$-He collision-induced absorption (CIA) spectrum are altered under fluid-like densities. For the conditions encountered at the photosphere of cool helium-rich white dwarfs, our ab initio calculations show that the ionization of most metals is inhibited and that the H$_…
New spectra of 81 ultracool dwarfs (spectral types M7 and later) are discussed. Spectral classifications of 49 objects are available in the literature, while 32 objects are newly classified. The known spectral types were used to test an automated classification scheme, which relies primarily on template fitting, supplemented by matching of spectral indices calibrated against the template spectra. An attempt was made to quantify the uncertainty in the spectral types, which is generally better than two subclasses. Objects for which spectral types differ by more than one subclass from the literat…
Proper motion measurements of the cool and ultracool populations in the Upper Scorpius OB association are crucial to confirm membership and to identify possible run-away objects. We cross-match samples of photometrically selected and spectroscopically confirmed cool and ultracool (K5<SpT<M8.5) candidate members in the Upper Scorpius OB association using the literature and the USNO-B and the UCAC2 catalogues. 251 of these objects have a USNO-B and/or UCAC2 counterpart with proper motion measurements. A significant fraction (19 objects, 7.6+-1.8%) of spectroscopically confirmed young objects sho…
Ultracool dwarf Science with MachIne LEarning (USMILE). I. Scalable Tree-Based Models for Photometric Spectral Classification and New Discoveries from LSST Data Preview 1 and Euclid Quick Data Release 1
We present the discovery of 61 wide (>5 arcsecond) separation, low-mass (stellar and substellar) companions to stars in the solar neighborhood identified from Pan-STARRS\,1 (PS1) data and the spectral classification of 27 previously known companions. Our companions represent a selective subsample of promising candidates and span a range in spectral type of K7-L9 with the addition of one DA white dwarf. These were identified primarily from a dedicated common proper motion search around nearby stars, along with a few as serendipitous discoveries from our Pan-STARRS1 brown dwarf search. Our disco…
Juvenile ultracool dwarfs are late spectral type objects (later than ~M6) with ages between 10 Myr and several 100 Myr. Their age-related properties lie intermediate between very low mass objects in nearby star-forming regions (ages 1-5 Myr) and field stars and brown dwarfs that are members of the disk population (ages 1-5 Gyr). Kinematic associations of nearby young stars with ages from ~10-100 Myr provide sources for juvenile ultracool dwarfs. The lowest mass confirmed members of these groups are late-M dwarfs. Several apparently young L dwarfs and a few T dwarfs are known, but they have not…

We present the first results of the ongoing Canada-France Brown Dwarfs Survey-InfraRed, hereafter CFBDSIR, a Near InfraRed extension to the optical wide-field survey CFBDS. Our final objectives are to constrain ultracool atmosphere physics by finding a statistically significant sample of objects cooler than 650K and to explore the ultracool brown dwarf mass function building on a well defined sample of such objects. Candidates are identified in CFHT/WIRCam J and CFHT/MegaCam z' images using optimised psf-fitting, and we follow them up with pointed near infrared imaging with SOFI at NTT. We fin…
We present optical spectroscopy and near-infrared photometry of 57 faint ($g= 19-22$) high proper motion white dwarfs identified through repeat imaging of $\approx3100$ square degrees of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey footprint by Munn et al. (2014). We use $ugriz$ and $JH$ photometry to perform a model atmosphere analysis, and identify ten ultracool white dwarfs with $T_{\rm eff}<4000$ K, including the coolest pure H atmosphere white dwarf currently known, J1657+2638, with $T_{\rm eff}= 3550 \pm 100$K. The majority of the objects with cooling ages larger than 9 Gyr display thick disc kinematics…
Observations of magnetic activity indicators in solar-type stars exhibit a relationship with rotation with an increase until a "saturation" level and a moderate decrease in activity in the very fastest rotators ("supersaturation"). While X-ray data have suggested that this relationship is strongly violated in ultracool dwarfs (UCDs; spectral type >M7), the limited number of X-ray detections has prevented firm conclusions. In this paper, we analyze the X-ray activity-rotation relation in 38 ultracool dwarfs. Our sample represents the largest catalog of X-ray active ultracool dwarfs to date, inc…
In this paper, we describe how to use the Maximum Reduced Proper Motion method (Phan-Bao et al. 2003) to detect 57 nearby L and late-M dwarfs (d_phot <= 30 pc): 36 of them are newly discovered. Spectroscopic observations of 43 of the 57 ultracool dwarfs were previously reported in Martin et al. (2010). These ultracool dwarfs were identified by color criteria in ~5,000 square degrees of the DENIS database and then further selected by the method for spectroscopic follow-up to determine their spectral types and spectroscopic distances. We also report here our newly measured proper motions of thes…
We present the numerical simulations for an electron-beam-driven and loss-cone-driven electron-cyclotron maser (ECM) with different plasma parameters and different magnetic field strengths for a relatively small region and short time-scale in an attempt to interpret the recent discovered intense radio emission from ultracool dwarfs. We find that a large amount of electromagnetic field energy can be effectively released from the beam-driven ECM, which rapidly heats the surrounding plasma. A rapidly developed high-energy tail of electrons in velocity space (resulting from the heating process of …
Little is known about the existence of extrasolar planets around ultracool dwarfs. Furthermore, binary stars with Sun-like primaries and very low-mass binaries composed of ultracool dwarfs show differences in the distributions of mass ratio and orbital separation that can be indicative of distinct formation mechanisms. Using FORS2/VLT optical imaging for high precision astrometry we are searching for planets and substellar objects around ultracool dwarfs to investigate their multiplicity properties for very low companion masses. Here we report astrometric measurements with an accuracy of two t…
With the purpose to investigate the radio emission of new ultracool objects, we carried out a targeted search in the recently discovered system VHS J125601.92$-$125723.9 (hereafter VHS 1256$-$1257); this system is composed by an equal-mass M7.5 binary and a L7 low-mass substellar object located at only 15.8\,pc. We observed in phase-reference mode the system VHS 1256$-$1257 with the Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array at $X$- and $L$- band and with the European VLBI Network at $L$-band in several epochs during 2015 and 2016. We discovered radio emission at $X$-band spatially coincident with the eq…
Using astrometric measurements obtained with the FORS2/VLT camera, we are searching for low-mass companions around 20 nearby ultracool dwarfs. With a single-measurement precision of 0.1 milli-arcseconds, our survey is sensitive to a wide range of companion masses from planetary companions to binary systems. Here, we report the discovery and orbit characterisation of a new ultracool binary at a distance of 19.5 pc from Earth that is composed of the M8.5-dwarf primary DE0630-18 and a substellar companion. The nearly edge-on orbit is moderately eccentric (e=0.23) with an orbital period of 1120 d,…
We present Spitzer 5-15 micron spectroscopy of one cool white dwarf and 3.6-8 micron photometry of 51 cool white dwarfs with T_eff < 6000 K. The majority of our targets have accurate BVRIJHK photometry and trigonometric parallax measurements available, which enables us to perform a detailed model atmosphere analysis using their optical, near- and mid-infrared photometry with state- of-the-art model atmospheres. We demonstrate that the optical and infrared spectral energy distributions of cool white dwarfs are well reproduced by our grid of models. Our best fit models are consistent with the ob…
Brown dwarf companions to white dwarfs are rare, but recent infra-red surveys are slowly reveal- ing examples. We present new observations of the post-common envelope binary WD0137-349, which reveals the effects of irradiation on the ~ 0.05M* secondary, and new observations of GD 1400 which show that it too is a close, post-comon envelope system. We also present the lat- est results in a near-infrared photometric search for unresolved ultracool companions and to white dwarfs with UKIDSS. Twenty five DA white dwarfs were identified as having photometric excesses indicative of a low mass compani…
The L/T transition is an important evolutionary phase in brown dwarf atmospheres, providing us with a unique opportunity to explore the effects of clouds, convection, winds, gravity and metallicity across a very narrow temperature range. Understanding these physical processes is critical for understanding ultracool atmospheres. In the next decade, we will answer three key questions regarding L/T transition atmospheres: 1. What is the physical mechanism behind the L/T transition? 2. What is the spatial extent of atmospheric structures at the L/T transition? 3. How do gravity and metallicity aff…
Ultracool dwarfs encompass a wide variety of compact stellar-like objects with spectra classified as late-M, L, T and Y. Most of them have been discovered using wide-field imaging surveys. The Virtual Observatory has proven to be of great utility to efficiently exploit these astronomical resources. We aim to validate a Virtual Observatory methodology designed to discover and characterize ultracool dwarfs in deep extragalactic surveys like ALHAMBRA and COSMOS. Three complementary searches based on parallaxes, proper motions and colours, respectively were carried out. A total of 897 candidate ul…
With the discovery of a planetary system around TRAPPIST-1, there has been a surge of interest in ultracool dwarfs as potential planet hosts. Planetary systems around ultracool dwarfs represent our best chance of characterising temperate rocky-planet atmospheres with JWST. However, TRAPPIST-1 remains the only known system of its kind, and the occurrence rate of planets around ultracool dwarfs is still poorly constrained. We seek to perform a complete transit search on the ultracool dwarfs observed by NASA's K2 mission to constrain the occurrence rate of planets around these stars. We filter an…
We present the discovery and spectroscopic follow-up of a nearby late-type L dwarf (2M0614+3950), and two extremely wide very-low-mass binary systems (2M0525-7425AB and 2M1348-1344AB), resulting from our search for common proper motion pairs containing ultracool components in the Two Micron All Sky Survey (2MASS) and the Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer (WISE) catalogs. The near-infrared spectrum of 2M0614+3950 indicates a spectral type L$9 \pm 1$ object residing at a distance of $26.0 \pm 1.8$ pc. The optical spectrum of 2M0525-7425A reveals an M$3.0 \pm 0.5$ dwarf primary, accompanied by …
We present additional analysis of the classification system presented in Allers & Liu (2013). We refer the reader to Allers & Liu (2013) for a detailed discussion of our near-IR spectral type and gravity classification system. Here, we address questions and comments from participants of the Brown Dwarfs Come of Age meeting. In particular, we examine the effects of binarity and metallicity on our classification system. We also present our classification of Pleiades brown dwarfs using published spectra. Lastly, we determine SpTs and calculate gravity-sensitive indices for the BT-Settl atmospheri…
We report upper limits to the radio and X-ray emission from the newly discovered ultracool dwarf binary WISE J104915.57$-$531906.1 (Luhman 16AB). As the nearest ultracool dwarf binary (2 pc), its proximity offers a hefty advantage to studying plasma processes in ultracool dwarfs which are more similar in gross properties (radius, mass, temperature) to the solar system giant planets than stars. The radio and X-ray emission upper limits from the Australia Telescope Compact Array (ATCA) and Chandra observations, each spanning multiple rotation periods, provide the deepest fractional radio and X-r…
A number of fast-rotating ultra cool dwarfs (UCDs) emit pulsed coherent radiation, attributed to the electron cyclotron maser instability, a phenomenon that occurs in the solar system at planets with strong auroral emission. In this paper we examine magnetosphere-ionosphere coupling currents in UCDs, adopting processes used in models of Jovian emission. We consider the angular velocity gradient arising from a steady outward flux of angular momentum from an internal plasma source, as analogous to the jovian main oval current system, as well as the interaction of a rotating magnetosphere with th…
The Gaia data release 2 (DR2) contains $>$6000 objects with parallaxes $(Plx+3\times{e\_Plx})>50$mas placing them within 20pc from the Sun. Since the expected numbers extrapolating the well-known 10pc census are much lower, nearby Gaia stars need a quality assessment. The 20pc sample of white dwarfs (WDs) had already been verified and completed with Gaia DR2. We aimed to check and complete the 20pc sample of ultracool dwarfs (UCDs) with spectral types $\gtrsim$M7 and given Gaia DR2 parallaxes. Dividing the Gaia DR2 20pc sample into subsamples of various astrometric and photometric quality, we …
The Gaia catalogue of nearby stars (GCNS) divided all objects with parallaxes $>$10mas into GCNS-selected and GCNS-rejected 100pc samples. Below the white dwarf (WD) sequence in the complete GCNS color-magnitude diagram (CMD), at $Gabs>14.7+4.7(G-RP)$, there appear 60 GCNS-selected faint blue white dwarfs (FBWDs). However this CMD region is also populated by 411 GCNS-rejected objects, mainly from crowded regions towards the Galactic centre and the Magellanic Clouds. The WD catalog of Gentile Fusillo et al. (2021) lists only 47 GCNS-selected but also 8 GCNS-rejected objects. I confirm 59 of the…
We observed strong superflares (defined as flares with energy in excess of 10^33 erg) on three late-M dwarfs: 2MASS J08315742+2042213 (hereafter 2M0831+2042; M7 V), 2MASS J08371832+2050349 (hereafter 2M0837+2050; M8 V) and 2MASS J08312608+2244586 (hereafter 2M0831+2244; M9 V). 2M0831+2042 and 2M0837+2050 are members of the young (~700 Myr) open cluster Praesepe. The strong superflare on 2M0831+2042 has an equivalent duration (ED) of 13.7 hr and an estimated energy of 1.3 X 10^35 erg. We observed five superflares on 2M0837+2050, on which the strongest superflare has an ED of 46.4 hr and an esti…

We present follow-up spectroscopy of 711 white dwarfs within 100 pc, and present a detailed model atmosphere analysis of the 100 pc white dwarf sample in the SDSS footprint. Our spectroscopic follow-up is complete for 83% of the white dwarfs hotter than 6000 K, where the atmospheric composition can be constrained reliably. We identify 1508 DA white dwarfs with pure hydrogen atmospheres. The DA mass distribution has an extremely narrow peak at $0.59~M_{\odot}$, and reveals a shoulder from relatively massive white dwarfs with $M=0.7$-$0.9~M_{\odot}$. Comparing this distribution with binary popul…
We report the detection of large-amplitude, rapid radial velocity (RV) variations and line-splitting in high-resolution Keck/NIRSPEC spectra of the M9 dwarf LP 413-53. We attribute these features to binary motion. Analyzing data spanning 15 years, we infer a preliminary orbital period of 0.7106156$\pm$0.0000002 day, an eccentricity of 0.0088$\pm$0.0017, a primary RV semi-amplitude of 23.70$\pm$0.05 km s$^{-1}$, and a secondary RV semi-amplitude of 28.41$\pm$0.06 km s$^{-1}$, implying a system mass ratio $M_\mathrm{secondary}$/$M_\mathrm{primary}$ = 0.8340$\pm$0.0017. These measurements identif…
Evolution of a large part of low-mass X-ray binaries (LMXBs) leads to the formation of rapidly rotating pulsars with a helium white dwarf (He WD) companion. Observations indicate that some He WDs in binary pulsar systems are ultracool (with the effective temperatures $T_{\rm eff}\lesssim$ 4000\, K). It is hard to cool down a He WD to such low temperatures within the Hubble time, because a thick hydrogen envelope was left behind around the He core after the mass transfer process. A possible mechanism that can accelerate the WD cooling is the evaporative wind mass loss from the He WD driven by t…
A complete well-defined sample of ultracool dwarfs is one of the key science programs of the Pan-STARRS 1 optical survey telescope (PS1). Here we combine PS1 commissioning data with 2MASS to conduct a proper motion search (0.1--2.0\arcsec/yr) for nearby T dwarfs, using optical+near-IR colors to select objects for spectroscopic followup. The addition of sensitive far-red optical imaging from PS1 enables discovery of nearby ultracool dwarfs that cannot be identified from 2MASS data alone. We have searched 3700 sq. deg. of PS1 y-band (0.95--1.03 um) data to y$\approx$19.5 mag (AB) and J$\approx$1…
Over a dozen ultracool dwarfs (UCDs), low-mass objects of spectral types $\geq$M7, are known to be sources of radio flares. These typically several-minutes-long radio bursts can be up to 100\% circularly polarized and have high brightness temperatures, consistent with coherent emission via the electron cyclotron maser operating in $\sim$kG magnetic fields. Recently, the statistical properties of the bulk physical parameters that describe these UCDs have become adequately described to permit synthesis of the population of radio-flaring objects. For the first time, I construct a Monte Carlo simu…
