We calculate the shape of the $πΣ$ and $\bar K N$ invariant mass distributions in the $Λ_b \to J/ψ\, πΣ$ and $Λ_b \to J/ψ\,\bar K N$ decays that are dominated by the $Λ(1405)$ resonance. The weak interaction part is the same for both processes and the hadronization into the different meson-baryon channels in the final state is related by SU(3) symmetry. The most important feature is the implementation of the meson-baryon final-state interaction using two chiral unitary models from different theoretical groups. Both approaches give a good description of antikaon-nucleon scattering data, the complex energy shift in kaonic hydrogen and the line shapes of $πΣK$ in photoproduction, based on the two-pole scenario for the $Λ(1405)$. We find that this reaction reflects more the higher mass pole and we make predictions of the line shapes and relative strength of the meson-baryon distributions in the final state.
We evaluate exclusive semileptonic decays of ground-state spin-1/2 doubly heavy charmed baryons. The decays are driven by a $c\to s,d$ transition at the quark level. Our form factors are consistent with Heavy Quark Symmetry constraints. The latter are valid in the limit of infinitely heavy quark mass at zero recoil.
Properties of b-baryon decay matrix elements (amplitudes) have been derived in a nonsymmetric quark model without any use of SU(6), SU(3), or SU(2) (isotopic spin) groups. Equalities between pairs of amplitudes are derived, and $Λ-Σ$ mixing is used to calculate the branching ratio for the transition $Λ_b\rightarrow Σ^0$.
We evaluate semileptonic decays of spin-1/2 and spin-3/2 doubly heavy $cb$ baryons. The decays are driven by a $c\to s,d$ transition at the quark level. We check our results for the form factors against heavy quark spin symmetry constraints obtained in the limit of very large heavy quark masses and near zero recoil.
The semileptonic decays of the lowest-lying double-heavy baryons is treated in a quark model. For the $Ξ_{bb}$, hyperfine mixing in the spin wave function leaves the total rate for decay into the lowest lying daughter baryons essentially unchanged, but changes the relative rates into the $Ξ_{bc}$ and $Ξ_{bc}^\prime$. The same pattern is obtained in the decays of the $Ω_{bb}$. For the $Ξ_{bc}$, this mixing leads to factor of about 17 suppression in the decay rate to the $Ξ_{cc}^*$, and a factor of two suppression in the total decay rate. For the $Ω_{bc}$, the decay to the $Ω_{cc}^*$ is suppress…
Heavy quark spin symmetry is discussed in the context of single and doubly heavy baryons. A special attention is paid to the constraints/simplifications that this symmetry imposes on the non-relativistic constituent quark model wave functions and on the b->c semileptonic decays of these hadrons.
From inclusive measurements it is known that about 7% of all $B$ mesons decay into final states with baryons. In these decays, some striking features become visible compared to mesonic decays. The largest branching fractions come with quite moderate multiplicities of 3-4 hadrons. We note that two-body decays to baryons are suppressed relative to three- and four-body decays. In most of these analyses, the invariant baryon-antibaryon mass shows an enhancement near the threshold. We propose a phenomenological interpretation of this quite common feature of hadronization to baryons.
Though not considered in general, purely baryonic decays could shed light on the puzzle of the baryon number asymmetry in the universe by means of a better understanding of the baryonic nature of our matter world. As such, they constitute a yet unexplored class of decay processes worth investigating. We propose to search for purely baryonic decay processes at the LHCb experiment. No such type of decay has ever been observed. In particular, we concentrate on the decay $Λ_b^0\to p\bar pn$, which is the simplest purely baryonic decay mode, with solely spin-1/2 baryons involved. We predict its dec…
We present results for exclusive $b\to c$ semileptonic decays of ground state triply-heavy baryons and for semileptonic $c\to s,d$ decays of doubly heavy ground state $cb$ baryons. In both cases, we have derived for the first time heavy quark spin symmetry relations for the hadronic amplitudes near zero recoil. Though strictly valid in the limit of very large heavy quark masses and near zero recoil, they turn out to be reasonable accurate for the whole available phase space in these decays and for the actual heavy quark masses we use. With these relations we have made approximate, but model in…
We investigate the long distance contribution via charmed hadron loops in the processes $η_c$, $χ_{c0}$ and $h_c$ decaying to baryon anti-baryon pairs, which are supposed to be highly suppressed by the helicity selection rule as a consequence of the perturbative QCD framework. With an effective Lagrangian method, our estimation result indicates that such hadron loops play an important role in these hadronic decays. It is a further test of the evading mechanism for the helicity selection rule in charmonium baryon-antibaryon decays.
We study the radiative decay into $γ$ and a baryon of the SU(3) octet and decuplet of nine and ten resonances that are dynamically generated from the interaction of vector mesons with baryons of the octet and the decuplet respectively. We obtain quite different partial decay widths for the various resonances, and for different charge states of the same resonance, suggesting that the experimental investigation of these radiative decays should bring much information on the nature of these resonances. For the case of baryons of the octet we determine the helicity amplitudes and compare them with …
Spectroscopy and strong decays of the charmed baryons are reviewed. Possible spin-parity quantum numbers of several newly observed charmed baryon resonances are discussed. Strong decays of charmed baryons are analyzed in the framework of heavy hadron chiral perturbation theory in which heavy quark symmetry and chiral symmetry are synthesized.
In this work we study the radiative decay of dynamically generated $J^P=\oh^-$ charm baryons into the ground state $J^P=\oh^+$ baryons. Since different theoretical interpretations of these baryonic resonances, and in particular of the $Λ_c(2595)$, give different predictions, a precise experimental measurement of these decays would be an important step for understanding their nature.
Compared with the charmed baryons, the bottom baryons are not very well known, either experimentally or theoretically. In this paper, we investigate the dipion strong decays of the P-wave and D-wave excited bottom baryons in the framework of the QPC model. We also extend the same analysis to the charmed baryons.
One of the outstanding problems in physics is to explain the baryon-anti-baryon asymmetry observed in nature. According to the well-known Sakharov criterion for explaining the observed asymmetry, it is essential that $CP$ violation exist. Even though $CP$ violation has been observed in meson decays and is an integral part of the standard model (SM), measurements in meson decays indicate that $CP$ violation in the SM is insufficient to explain the observed baryon-anti-baryon asymmetry. SM predicts the existence of yet to be observed $CP$ violation in baryon decays. A critical test of the SM req…
We consider the role played by hyperfine mixing in electromagnetic and semileptonic decays of doubly heavy baryons, which give rise to large corrections to the decay widths in both cases.
Several baryons containing a heavy b-quark, the b-baryons, have been discovered. The charmless two-body decays of b-baryons can provide a new platform for CP violating studies in a similar way as charmless two-body decays of B-meson. In b-baryon decays there are new CP violating observable related to baryon polarization. We show that in the flavor $SU(3)$ limit there exist relations involve different combinations of the decay amplitudes compared with those in CP violating rate asymmetry. These new relations therefore provide interesting tests for the mechanism of CP in the standard model (SM) …
The LHCb collaboration has presented first experimental evidence that spin-carrying matter and antimatter differ. The study looked at four-body decays of the $Λ_b^0$ baryon. Differences in the behaviour of matter and antimatter are associated with the non-invariance of fundamental interactions under the combined charge-conjugation and parity transformations, known as $C\!P$ violation. We discuss purely baryonic decay processes, i.e. decay processes involving only spin-carrying particles. They are yet unexplored elementary processes. Their study opens a new chapter of flavour physics in the rou…
The radiative decays of $b$-baryons facilitate the direct measurement of photon helicity in $b\to sγ$ transitions thus serving as an important test of physics beyond the Standard Model. In this paper we analyze the complete angular distribution of ground state $b$-baryon ($Λ_{b}^{0}$ and $Ξ_{b}^{-}$) radiative decays to multibody final states assuming an initially polarized $b$-baryon sample. Our sensitivity study suggests that the photon polarization asymmetry can be extracted to a good accuracy along with a simultaneous measurement of the initial $b$-baryon polarization. With higher yields o…
Inspired by the recent observation of the $Ξ_{cc}^{++}$ by LHCb collaboration, we explore the "decay constants" of doubly heavy baryons in the framework of QCD sum rules. With the $Ξ_{cc}, Ξ_{bc}, Ξ_{bb}$, and $Ω_{cc}, Ω_{bc}, Ω_{bb}$ baryons interpolated by three-quark operators, we calculate the correlation functions using the operator product expansion and include the contribution from operators up to dimension six. On the hadron side, we consider both contributions from the lowest-lying states with $J^P=1/2^+$ and from negative parity baryons with $J^P=1/2^-$. We find that the results are …
The nonleptonic decays $Λ_{b}\rightarrowΣ_{c}^{*-}π^{+},Ξ_{c}^{*0}K^{0}$ and $Λ_{b}\rightarrowΔ^{0}D^{0},Σ^{*-}D_{0}^{+}$ are studied. In addition, the decays $Λ_{b}\rightarrowΞ_{c}^{0}K^{0},Σ^{-}D_{s}^{+}$ are analyzed. For all these decays the dominant contribution comes from $W-$exchange, and for the decay $Λ_{b}\rightarrowΛ_{c}^{+}π^{-}$, in addition to factorization, baryon pole contribution to the $p$-wave (parity conserving) decay amplitude $B$ is discussed.
Baryon magnetic moments and beta decay ratios ($G_A/G_V$) are calculated in a phenomenological quark model. Non-static effects of pion exchange and orbital excitation are included. Good agreement with experiment is found for a combined fit to all measured baryon magnetic moments and beta decay ratios. The model predicts an antiquark content for the proton that is consistent with the Gottfried sum rule.
The observation of CP violation in meson decays is a testament to the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa (CKM) quark mixing paradigm, and an integral part of the Standard Model (SM). The SM also predicts the existence of CP violation in baryon decays that is yet to be observed. A critical test of the SM requires that CP violation be measured in baryon decays as well, in order to verify that it agrees with the measurement using meson decays. In this paper, we propose a modification to the recently proposed method to measure CP violating phase $γ$ in $b$-baryons, using interference arising implicitly due…
This is basically the update of [arXiv:0809.1869], a review on charmed baryon physics around 2007. Topics of this review include the spectroscopy, strong decays, lifetimes, nonleptonic and semileptonic weak decays, and electromagnetic decays of charmed baryons.
After the discovery of the double-charm baryon $Ξ_{cc}^{++}$ by LHCb, one of the most important topics is to search for the bottom-charm baryons which contain a $b$ quark, a $c$ quark and a light quark. In this work, we study the two-body non-leptonic weak decays of a bottom-charm baryon into a spin-$1/2$ bottomed baryon and a light pseudoscalar meson with the short-distance contributions calculated under the factorization hypothesis and the long-distance contributions considering the final-state-interaction effects. The branching fractions of all fifty-seven decay channels are estimated. The …
While indirect & direct CP violations (CPV) had been established in the decays of strange & beauty mesons, none have been done for baryons. There are different "roads" for finding CP asymmetries in the decays of strange baryons; they are highly non-trivial ones. The HyperCP Collaboration had probed CPV in the decays of single $Ξ$ & $Λ$ [Phys.Rev.Lett 93 (2004) 262001]. We talk about future lessons from $e^+e^-$ collisions at BESIII/BEPCII: probing decays of pairs of strange baryons, namely $Λ$, $Σ$ & $Ξ$. Realistic goals are to learn about non-perturbative QCD. One can hope to find CPV in the …
An overview of exclusive two-body and three-body baryonic B decays is given. The threshold enhancement effect in the dibaryon invariant mass and the angular distributions in the dibaryon rest frame are stressed and explained. Weak radiative baryonic B decays mediated by the electromagnetic penguin process $b\to sγ$ are discussed. Apart from the first observation of the radiative penguin decay $B^-\toΛ\bar pγ$ with the baryonic final state, the decay $B^-\to Ξ^0\barΣ^-γ$ at the level of $6\times 10^{-7}$ may be accessible to B factories in the near future.
We use $\bar p p$ and $e^+e^-$ annihilation data to further strengthen lower bounds on the partial lifetimes for the baryon-number-violating dinucleon decays $nn \to e^+ e^-$ and $nn \to μ^+μ^-$.
We consider which is the maximum information measurable from the decay distributions of polarised baryon decays via amplitude analysis in the helicity formalism. We focus in particular on the analytical study of the $Λ^+_c \to pK^-π^+$ decay distributions, demonstrating that the full information on its decay amplitudes can be extracted from its distributions, allowing a simultaneous measurement of both helicity amplitudes and the polarisation vector. This opens the possibility to use the $Λ^+_c \to pK^-π^+$ decay for applications ranging from New Physics searches to low-energy QCD studies, in …
We study strong decays of nonstrange baryons by making use of the algebraic approach to hadron structure. Within this framework we derive closed expressions for decay widths in an elementary-meson emission model and use these to analyze the experimental data for N* -> N + pi, N* -> Delta + pi, N* -> N + eta, Delta* -> N + pi, Delta* -> Delta + pi and Delta* -> Delta + eta decays.
We complement the results for the radiative corrections to the s2.l angular correlation of baryon semileptonic decays of Ref. [1] with the final results in the rest frame of the decaying baryon.
The complete renormalization of the weak Lagrangian to chiral order q^2 in heavy baryon chiral perturbation theory is performed using heat kernel techniques. The results are compared with divergences appearing in the calculation of Feynman graphs for the nonleptonic hyperon decay Lambda -> p pi^- and an estimate for the size of the counterterm contributions to the s-wave amplitudes in nonleptonic hyperon decays is given.
We present results for exclusive semileptonic decay widths of ground state spin-$1/2$ and spin-$3/2$ $cb$ baryons corresponding to a $c\to s, d$ transition at the quark level. The relevance of hyperfine mixing in spin-1/2 $cb$ baryons is shown. Our form factors are compatible with heavy quark spin symmetry constraints obtained in the infinite heavy quark mass limit.
We investigate the role of hyperfine mixing in the electromagnetic decay of ground state doubly heavy $bc$ baryons. As in the case of a previous calculation on $b\to c$ semileptonic decays of doubly heavy baryons, we find large corrections to the electromagnetic decay widths due to this mixing. Contrary to the weak case just mentioned, we find here that one can not use electromagnetic width relations obtained in the infinite heavy quark mass limit to experimentally extract information on the admixtures in a model independent way.
Observation in astronomy suggests that our Universe contains an abundance of matter over antimatter, which can only be explained if the combined CP symmetry is violated. Studies of CP violation have driven the flavor physics with the aim of testing the Standard Model of particle physics and searching for physics beyond. CP violation is discovered in strange, beauty and charm meson systems, however no conclusive sign of CP violation in baryon decays has been observed yet. This review summarizes CP violation studies performed by the LHCb experiment in charmless decays and rare decays of beauty b…
We derive relations for baryon photo-decay amplitudes both for the Breit-Wigner and the pole positions. With an updated SAID partial wave analysis, technically similar to the earliest Virginia Tech analysis of photoproduction data, we compare photo-decay amplitudes at both resonance positions for a few selected nucleon resonances. Comparisons are made and a qualitative similarity, seen between the pole and Breit-Wigner values extracted by the Bonn-Gatchina group, is confirmed in the present study.
We investigate the decays of the charmed baryons aiming at the systematic understanding of hadron internal structures based on the quark model by paying attention to heavy quark symmetry. We evaluate the decay widths from the one pion emission for the known excited states, Λ_c^*(2595), Λ_c^*(2625), Λ_c^*(2765), Λ_c^*(2880) and Λ_c^*(2940), as well as for the ground states Σ_c(2455) and Σ_c^*(2520). The decay properties of the lower excited charmed baryons are well explained, and several important predictions for higher excited baryons are given. We find that the axial-vector type coupling of t…
Motivated by the recent LHCb observation of doubly-charmed baryon $Ξ_{cc}^{++}$ in the $Λ_c^+ K^-π^+π^+$ final state, we analyze the weak decays of doubly heavy baryons $Ξ_{cc}$, $Ω_{cc}$, $Ξ_{bc}$, $Ω_{bc}$, $Ξ_{bb}$ and $Ω_{bb}$ under the flavor SU(3) symmetry. Decay amplitudes for various semileptonic and nonleptonic decays are parametrized in terms of a few SU(3) irreducible amplitudes. We find a number of relations or sum rules between decay widths and CP asymmetries, which can be examined in future measurements at experimental facilities like LHC, Belle II and CEPC. Moreover once a few d…
We examine the decays of nonstrange baryons to the final states $Δπ$, $Nρ$, $Nη$, $Nη^\prime$, $Nω$, $N1/2^+(1440)π$, and $\Delta3/2^+(1600)π$, in a relativized pair-creation($^3P_0$) model which has been developed in a previous study of the $Nπ$ decays of the same baryon states. As it is our goal to provide a guide for the possible discovery of new baryon states at CEBAF and elsewhere, we examine the decays of resonances which have already been seen in the partial-wave analyses, along with those of states which are predicted by the quark model but which remain undiscovered. The level of agree…
We study the branching ratios and up-down asymmetries in the charmed baryon weak decays of ${\bf B}_c\to {\bf B}_DM$ with ${\bf B}_{c(D)}$ anti-triplet charmed (decuplet) baryon and $M$ pseudo-scalar meson states based on the flavor symmetry of $SU(3)_F$. We propose equal and physical-mass schemes for the hadronic states to deal with the large variations of the decuplet baryon momenta in the decays in order to fit with the current experimental data. We find that our fitting results of ${\cal B}({\bf B}_c\to {\bf B}_DM) $ are consistent with the current experimental data in both schemes, while …
Weak radiative baryonic B decays $B\to\B_1\ov \B_2γ$ mediated by the electromagnetic penguin process $b\to sγ$ have appreciable rates larger than their two-body counterparts $B\to\B_1\ov \B_2$. The branching ratios for $B^-\toΛ\bar pγ$ and $B^-\toΞ^0\barΣ^-γ$ are sizable, falling into the range of $(1\sim 6)\times 10^{-6}$ with the value preferred to be on the large side, and not far from the bottom baryon radiative decays $Λ_b\toΛγ$ and $Ξ_b\toΞγ$ due to the large short-distance enhancement for $b\to sγ$ penguin transition and the large strong coupling of the anti-triplet bottom baryons with …
We consider hadronic weak decays of beauty-baryons into charmless baryons and pseudoscalar mesons in a general framework based on $SU(3)$ decomposition of the decay amplitudes. The advantage of the approach lies in the ability to perform an $SU(3)$ analysis of these decays without any particular set of dynamical assumptions while accounting for the effects of an arbitrarily broken $SU(3)$ flavor symmetry. Dictated by the symmetries of the effective Hamiltonian that allow us to relate or neglect reduced $SU(3)$ amplitudes, we derive several sum rule relations between amplitudes and relations be…
This is an extension of the prediction of strange baryon decays to the decays of charmed baryons using QCD Sum Rules. Using QCD Sum Rules we estimate the decay $Λ^+_c (udc) \rightarrow Λ^o_s(uds)+ π^+$. Although some weak decays of the $Λ^+_c$ have been measured, since it is difficult to measure $Λ^+_c \rightarrow Λ^o_s+ π^+$ our estimates should be useful for future experiments
Semileptonic decays of the $Ξ_b$ baryon are studied in the framework of the relativistic quark-diquark model based on the quasipotential approach. The weak decay form factors are calculated with the comprehensive account of all relativistic effects without employing nonrelativistic and heavy quark expansions. On this basis differential and total decay rates as well as different asymmetry parameters are calculated for the heavy-to-heavy $Ξ_b\to Ξ_c\ellν_\ell$ and heavy-to-light $Ξ_b\to Λ\ellν_\ell$ semileptonic decays. Predictions for the ratios of such decays involving $τ$ lepton and muon are …
We calculate the weak decay form factors of doubly-heavy baryons using three-point QCD sum rules. The Cutkosky rules are used to derive the double dispersion relations. We include perturbative contributions and condensation contributions up to dimension five, and point out that the perturbative contributions and condensates with lowest dimensions dominate. An estimate of part of gluon-gluon condensates show that it plays a less important role. With these form factors at hand, we present a phenomenological study of semileptonic decays. The future experimental facilities can test these predictio…
A pion mean-field approach allows one to investigate light and singly heavy baryons on an equal footing. In the large $N_c$ limit, the light and singly heavy baryons are viewed respectively as $N_c$ and $N_c-1$ valence quarks bound by the pion mean fields created self-consistently, since a heavy quark can be regarded as a static color source in the limit of the infinitely heavy quark mass. The transition magnetic moments of the baryon sextet are determined entirely by using the parameters fixed in the light-baryon sector without any additional parameters introduced. Assuming that the transitio…
It is proved that the nonleptonic decay amplitudes of antitriplet charmed baryons to octet baryons do not depend on the representation of the octet baryons in the quark diagram scheme. Relations among various representations are derived, and correct decay amplitudes of the charmed baryons are given.
The baryonic decays of $J/ ψ$ provide a new way to study the internal structure of baryons. A simple diquark model applied to the calculation of the $\bar{B}B$ decay cross-sections is compared with the ordinary constituent quark model. Various models also give different predictions for the rates involving the $N^{\ast}(1440)$ resonance in the final state.
There has been important experimental progress in the sector of heavy baryons in the past several years. We study the strong decays of the S-wave, P-wave, D-wave and radially excited charmed baryons using the $^3P_0$ model. After comparing the calculated decay pattern and total width with the available data, we discuss the possible internal structure and quantum numbers of those charmed baryons observed recently.
Based on a valence-quark picture of large Nc baryons, I describe in some detail the 1/Nc power counting for decays and spin-flavor configuration mixings in baryons.
We have investigated the electromagnetic decays of the antitriplet and sextet charmed baryon systems with $J^P= \frac{1}{2}^+, \frac{3}{2}^+$ in the framework of the heavy baryon chiral perturbation theory. We first construct the chiral Lagrangians at $O(p^2)$ and $O(p^3)$. Then we calculate the electromagnetic (EM) decay amplitudes of the charmed baryon systems up to $O(p^3)$. With the help of the quark model, we estimate the low energy constants. The numerical results of the EM decay widths show good convergence of the chiral expansion. We notice that the two neutral EM decay processes $Ξ_c'…
