8 pages, 3 figures, presentation given at 7th International Workshop on Top Quark Physics (TOP 2014), 29 September - 03 October 2014, Cannes, France, to appear in the proceedings
A summary of the experimental results of the TOP2014 International Workshop in Cannes, France, is presented. This inspiring conference clearly showed the richness and diversity of top-quark physics research. Results cover a very broad spectrum of analyses involving studies of the strong and electroweak interactions of the top quark, high-precision measurements of intrinsic top-quark properties, developments of new tools in top-quark analyses, observations of new Standard Model processes, the interaction between the top quark and the Higgs boson and sensitive searches for new physics beyond the Standard Model.
The production of single-top quarks occurs via the weak interaction at the Fermilab Tevatron proton-antiproton collider. Single top quark events are selected in the lepton+jets final state by CDF and D0 and in the missing transverse energy plus jets final state by CDF. Multivariate classifiers separate the s-channel and t-channel single-top signals from the large backgrounds. The combination of CDF and D0 results leads to the first observation of the s-channel mode of single top quark production. The t-channel and single top combined cross sections have also been measured.
Quaero is a web-based tool that automates high-pT analyses. It has been designed with the goals of expunging exclusion contours from conference talks, obviating the necessity of "uncorrecting" experimental results, reducing human bias in experimental measurements, reducing by orders of magnitude the time required to perform analyses, allowing the publication of collider data in their full dimensionality, rigorously propagating systematic errors, dramatically increasing the robustness of experimental results, and facilitating the combination of results among different experiments. Quaero has be…
The experimental program of the Seventh International Workshop on Charm Physics (CHARM 2015) is summarized. Highlights of the workshop include results from heavy flavor production, quarkonium and exotic states, hadronic decays and Dalitz analyses, semileptonic and leptonic decays, rare and radiative decays, charm mixing, and CP and T violation.
I review few selected topics on recent theoretical progress in top physics. In particular I will discuss recent progress in the computation of the relationship between the MS-bar and pole top mass, in the NNLO calculation of top differential distributions, and in the simulation of top production and decays. Implications for top mass measurements will be discussed.
Top quark physics continues to be an exciting and fast moving research area. The large statistics provided by the LHC are allowing us to measure processes never observed before and to develop new methods to improve the precision for the "bread-and-butter" measurements. Summarising more than thirty talks in a concise way is something of a challenge and hence this document is my own personal biased selection of the many interesting results that were discussed at the workshop.
We summarise the Topical Workshop on Top Quark Differential Distributions 2014, which took place in Cannes immediately before the annual Top2014 conference. The workshop was motivated by the availability of top quark differential distributions at NNLO and the forthcoming LHC 13 TeV data. The main goal of the workshop was to explore the impact of improved calculations of top quark production on precision LHC measurements, PDF determinations and searches for physics beyond the Standard Model, as well as finding ways in which the high precision data from ATLAS, CMS and LHCb can be used to further…
The search for new physics is a major goal of the LHC physics program. As excitement grows for the upcoming start of Run 2, I review the CMS and ATLAS searches for physics beyond the Standard Model from Run 1 and present recent analyses. These searches have covered a wide range of new physics scenarios including Supersymmetry, new resonances, additional Higgs bosons, new hidden sectors, other Dark Matter, and multi-charged particles. In addition to reviewing some of the techniques that made the analyses possible, I will summarize what we have learned from the results and briefly discuss prospe…
High-quality results have been produced with the first Large Hadron Collider run on high-pT, heavy flavour and heavy ion physics. These results, as well as the most recent data analyses from Tevatron, have been presented and discussed at the LHCP2014 conference. A selection of some of them is summarised in this paper, with care to those that stimulated interesting discussions during this event.
Recent highlights from the HERA experiments, Hermes, H1 and ZEUS, are reviewed and ideas for future analyses to fully exploit this unique data set are proposed. This document is a summary of a workshop on future physics with HERA data held at DESY, Hamburg at the end of 2014. All areas of HERA physics are covered and contributions from both experimentalists and theorists are included. The document outlines areas where HERA physics can still make a significant contribution, principally in a deeper understanding of QCD, and its relevance to other facilities. Within the framework of the Data Pres…
A trend for future high energy physics experiments is an increase in the data bandwidth produced from the detectors. Datasets of the Petabyte scale have already become the norm, and the requirements of future experiments -- greater in size, exposure, and complexity -- will further push the limits of data acquisition technologies to data rates of exabytes per seconds. The challenge for these future data-intensive physics facilities lies in the reduction of the flow of data through a combination of sophisticated event selection in the form of high-performance triggers and improved data represent…
This is the proceedings article for the concluding lecture of the 1999 High Energy Physics Conference of the European Physical Society. In this article, I review a number of topics that were highlighted at the meeting and have more general importance in high energy physics. The major topics discussed include: (1) precision electroweak physics, (2) CP violation, (3) new directions in QCD, (4) supersymmetry spectroscopy, (5) the experimental physics of extra dimensions.
At the time of the 10th International Workshop on Top Quark Physics (TOP2017), top quark physics is a very dynamic research area. Thanks to the unprecedentedly fast accumulation of high-energy data at the LHC during the ongoing Run~2, statistical starvation is a matter of the past for most of the traditional top-quark analyses, that are now experiencing the luxury of having to worry about how to punch through the "Systematics Wall" and maximize the utility of their data. New processes involving top quarks are being studied for the first time, and the good old pair-production processes are bein…
An essential companion to the development and advancement of the field of Particle Physics is a strong program in physics education at all levels, that can attract entry level students across the full demographic spectrum and provide them with the education, training and skills needed to advance to successful careers in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) and other fields. This report summarizes the work of several investigative teams that have reviewed and assessed current opportunities in physics education across K-12, undergraduate, graduate and postdoctoral domains, inc…
The conference included about 90 talks covering a plethora of different sectors, like Higgs physics, electroweak physics, top physics, BSM physics, soft QCD, jets, PDFs, heavy ions, heavy flavours, spectroscopy, etc. A few experimental results are here highlighted.
We present a summary of heavy-flavour physics at the the time of the DIS2019 conference. This summary is based upon the relevant plenary and parallel talks presented at the workshop. The summary is divided into four broad areas: (1) spectroscopy, (2) the production of b and c quarks in collisions, (3) top quark production and properties, and (4) b and c quark decay.
The main highlights discussed at TAU2012 are briefly summarized. Besides the standard topics on lepton physics covered also at previous conferences (universality, QCD tests, V_{us} determination from tau decay, g-2, neutrino oscillations, lepton-flavour violation), the tau lepton is playing now a very important role in searches for new physics phenomena.
We present a summary of the latest measurements of the top pair and single top cross sections performed by the CDF and D0 collaborations at the Fermilab Tevatron collider.
This writeup summarizes the main experimental studies of the strong interaction, theoretically described by quantum chromodynamics (QCD), that were presented during the ICHEP-2020 conference. The latest results, measured mostly in p-p collisions at the LHC, are categorized in seven broad topics: (i) Extractions of the strong coupling constant $α_s(m_{\rm Z})$; (ii) Comparison of data to fixed-order (N$^{\rm n}$LO) perturbative QCD calculations; (iii) Determinations of parton distribution functions (PDFs); (iv) Comparison of data to resummed (N$^{\rm n}$LL) pQCD calculations; (v) Parton showeri…
We review theoretical and phenomenological aspects of heavy flavour production as discussed in the heavy flavour working group of the DIS 2012. Recent theoretical progress includes approximate NNLO calculations for heavy quark structure functions in deep inelastic scattering, the extension of the ACOT heavy flavour scheme to jet production, and advances in top physics where the highlight is clearly the first complete NNLO QCD prediction for top pair production in the $q \bar{q}$ annihilation channel. Furthermore, state of the art phenomenological predictions for open charm and bottom, charmoni…
A large amount of new results have been presented at TAU2006. The highlights of the workshop, the present status of a few selected topics on lepton physics (universality, QCD tests, V_{us} determination from tau decay, g-2, neutrino oscillations, lepton-flavour violation) and the prospects for future improvements are briefly summarized.
The contributions to the Spin Physics WG are summarized. Several new experimental results and plans for new measurements have been reported. An improved theoretical understanding of the most recent hot topics in spin physics has been discussed by many authors especially in the new fields of the transversity and generalized parton distributions.
We present a summary of the current status of searches for dark matter at the LHC from the ATLAS and CMS experiments. For various assumptions in the simplified parameter space, the LHC exclusions is complementary to direct detection results. Mono-object analyses in search of dark matter and various analyses searching for dark matter mediators are presented.
A broad range of new experimental data and theoretical results on the properties of hadronic matter under extreme conditions have been reported at Quark Matter 2012 conference. At this conference the scientific community was presented with a variety of measurements from the 2011 lead-lead LHC run using hard probe observables. Many measurements, such as boson-jet correlations, production rates of the b-jets, high precision jet fragmentation and others were shown for the first time. The new data from the LHC was matched by new techniques and analyses coming from RHIC experiments. This proceeding…
We summarize recent results presented in the astrophysics session during a conference on ``Frontiers of Contemporary Physics''. We will discuss three main fields (High-Energy Astrophysics, Relativistic Astrophysics, and Cosmology), where Astrophysicists are pushing the limits of our knowledge of the physics of the universe to new frontiers. Since the highlights of early 1997 were the first detection of a redshift and the optical and X-ray afterglows of gamma-ray bursts, as well as the first well-documented flares of TeV-Blazars across a large fraction of the electromagnetic spectrum, we will c…
Recent results related to Double-Parton Scattering (DPS) and Multi-Parton Interactions (MPI) from the LHC experiments (ALICE, ATLAS, CMS and LHCb) are reviewed and discussed together with a brief overview of relevant literature. The robust evidence collected for DPS in different channels at LHC energies is complemented by an increasing understanding of our description of MPI in high energy collisions and the corresponding modelling of the underlying event (UE) in hadronic interactions. Potential new results expected during Run 2 at the LHC are also anticipated. The relation and the interplay b…
In over forty presentations on experiments at the 2012 conference on Flavor Physics and CP Violation (FPCP 2012), there was an abundance of beautiful and significant results. This summary of these experiment presentations begins with a reminder of the context in which the measurements have been made and the motivations for making the specific measurements reported at the symposium. Given the number and breadth of physics topics covered at the meeting, this review covers only a limited set of highlights, sort of a traveler's set of souvenir postcards of favorite slides. The selected slides are …
In recent years novel inference techniques have been developed based on the construction of non-linear summary statistics with neural networks by minimising inferencemotivated losses. One such technique is inferno (P. de Castro and T. Dorigo, Comp. Phys. Comm. 244 (2019) 170) which was shown on toy problems to outperform classical summary statistics for the problem of confidence interval estimation in the presence of nuisance parameters. In order to test and benchmark the algorithm in a real world application, a full, systematics-dominated analysis produced by the CMS experiment, "Measurement …
