Spaces of homogeneous polynomials on a Banach space are frequently equipped with quasinorms instead of norms. In this paper we develop a technique to replace the original quasi-norm by a norm in a dual preserving way, in the sense that the dual of the space with the new norm coincides with the dual of the space with the original quasi-norm. Applications to problems on the existence and approximation of solutions of convolution equations and on hypercyclic convolution operators on spaces of entire functions are provided.
We present a unified approach to the processes of inversion and duality for quasilinear and $1$-quasilinear maps; in particular, for centralizers and differentials generated by interpolation methods.
We construct an example of a real Banach space whose group of surjective isometries has no uniformly continuous one-parameter semigroups, but the group of surjective isometries of its dual contains infinitely many of them. Other examples concerning numerical index, hermitian operators and dissipative operators are also shown.
In article is constructed a wide couple of pairwice non-isomorphic separable superreflexive Banach spaces E that are subspace homogeneous. Their conjugates are quotient homogeneous. None of this couple neither isomorphic to its Cartesian square nor has the approximation property. At the same time, any such E is isomorphic to E+ E+ W for some Banach space W and, hence, solves the Schroeder - Bernstein problem.
We present many examples of Banach spaces of linear operators and homogeneous polynomials without the approximation property, thus improving results of Dineen and Mujica [11] and Godefroy and Saphar [13].
Given a set $B$ of operators between subspaces of $L_p$ spaces, we characterize the operators between subspaces of $L_p$ spaces that remain bounded on the $X$-valued $L_p$ space for every Banach space on which elements of the original class $B$ are bounded. This is a form of the bipolar theorem for a duality between the class of Banach spaces and the class of operators between subspaces of $L_p$ spaces, essentially introduced by Pisier. The methods we introduce allow us to recover also the other direction --characterizing the bipolar of a set of Banach spaces--, which had been obtained by Hern…
In this work we study the vector-valued Hardy spaces H p (D; F) (1 \leq p \leq \infty) and their relationship with RNP, ARNP and the UMDP properties. By following the approach of Taylor in the scalar-valued case, we prove that, when F and F have the ARNP property, then H p (D; F) and H q (D; F) are canonically topologically isomorphic (for p, q \in (1, \infty) conjugate indices) if and only if F has the UMDP.
This paper will generalize what may be termed the "geometric duality theory" of real pre-ordered Banach spaces which relates geometric properties of a closed cone in a real Banach space, to geometric properties of the dual cone in the dual Banach space. We show that geometric duality theory is not restricted to real pre-ordered Banach spaces, as is done classically, but can be extended to real Banach spaces endowed with arbitrary collections of closed cones. We define geometric notions of normality, conormality, additivity and coadditivity for members of dual pairs of real vector spaces as cer…
We study the dynamics induced by homogeneous polynomials on Banach spaces. It is known that no homogeneous polynomial defined on a Banach space can have a dense orbit. We show, a simple and natural example of a homogeneous polynomial with an orbit that is at the same time $d$-dense (the orbit meets every ball of radius $d$), weakly dense and such that $Γ\cdot Orb_P(x)$ is dense for every $Γ\subset \mathbb C$ that is either unbounded or that has 0 as an accumulation point. Moreover we generalize the construction to arbitrary infinite dimensional separable Fréchet spaces. To prove this we study …
This is a survey on disjointly homogeneous Banach lattices and their applicactions. Several structural properties of this class are analyzed. In addition we show how these spaces provide a natural framework for studying the compactness of powers of operators allowing for a unified treatment of well-known results.
We review the current state of the homogeneous Banach space problem. We then formulate several questions which arise naturally from this problem, some of which seem to be fundamental but new. We give many examples defining the bounds on the problem. We end with a simple construction showing that every infinite dimensional Banach space contains a subspace on which weak properties have become stable (under passing to further subspaces). Implications of this construction are considered.
Let SB be the standard coding for separable Banach spaces as subspaces of $C(Δ)$. In these notes, we show that if $\mathbb{B} \subset \text{SB}$ is a Borel subset of spaces with separable dual, then the assignment $X \mapsto X^*$ can be realized by a Borel function $\mathbb{B}\to \text{SB}$. Moreover, this assignment can be done in such a way that the functional evaluation is still well defined (Theorem $1$). Also, we prove a Borel parametrized version of Zippin's theorem, i.e., we prove that there exists $Z \in \text{SB}$ and a Borel function that assigns for each $X \in \mathbb{B}$ an isomor…
We show that for each Banach ideal of homogeneous polynomials, there exists a (necessarily unique) Banach operator ideal compatible with it. Analogously, we prove that any ideal of $n$-homogeneous polynomials belongs to a coherent sequence of ideals of $k$-homogeneous polynomials.
In this paper, we study the stability of the orthogonal equation, which is closely related to the results by Wlodzimierz Fechner and Justyna Sikorska in 2010. There are some differences that we consider the target space with the \b{eta}-homogeneous norm and quasi-norm. Overcoming the \b{eta}-homogeneous norm and quasi-norm bottlenecks, we get some new results.
Maximal monotone operators on a Banach space into its dual can be represented by convex functions bounded below by the duality product. It is natural to ask under which conditions a convex function represents a maximal monotone operator. A satisfactory answer, in the context of reflexive Banach spaces, has been obtained some years ago. Recently, a partial result on non-reflexive Banach spaces was obtained. In this work we study some others conditions which guarantee that a convex function represents a maximal monotone operator in non-reflexive Banach spaces.
We study the bounded and the compact weighted composition operators from the Bloch space into the weighted Banach spaces of holomorphic functions on bounded homogeneous domains, with particular attention to the unit polydisk. For bounded homogeneous domains, we characterize the bounded weighted composition operators and determine the operator norm. In addition, we provide sufficient conditions for compactness. For the unit polydisk, we completely characterize the compact weighted composition operators, as well as provide computable estimates on the operator norm.
Unbounded order convergence has lately been systematically studied as a generalization of almost everywhere convergence to the abstract setting of vector and Banach lattices. This paper presents a duality theory for unbounded order convergence. We define the unbounded order dual (or uo-dual) $X_{uo}^\sim$ of a Banach lattice $X$ and identify it as the order continuous part of the order continuous dual $X_n^\sim$. The result allows us to characterize the Banach lattices that have order continuous preduals and to show that an order continuous predual is unique when it exists. Applications to the…
We answer, by counterexample, several open questions concerning algebras of operators on a Hilbert space. The answers add further weight to the thesis that, for many purposes, such algebras ought to be studied in the framework of operator spaces, as opposed to that of Banach spaces and Banach algebras. In particular, the `nonselfadjoint analogue' of a W*-algebra resides naturally in the category of dual operator spaces, as opposed to dual Banach spaces. We also show that an automatic w*-continuity result in the preceding paper of the authors is sharp.
We prove the existence of a separable approximately ultra-homogeneous Banach lattice $\mathfrak{BL}$ that is isometrically universal for separable Banach lattices. This is done by showing that the class of Banach lattices has the Amalgamation Property, and thus finitely generated Banach lattices form a metric Fraïssé class. Some additional results about the structural properties of $\mathfrak{ BL}$ are also proven.
We study conditions on a Banach frame that ensures the validity of a reconstruction formula. In particular, we show that any Banach frames for (a subspace of) $L_p$ or $L_{p,q}$ ($1\le p < \infty$) with respect to a solid sequence space always satisfies an unconditional reconstruction formula. The existence of reconstruction formulae allows us to prove some James-type results for atomic decompositions: an unconditional atomic decomposition (or unconditional Schauder frame) for $X$ is shrinking (respectively, boundedly complete) if and only if $X$ does not contain an isomorphic copy of $\ell_1$…
We show that if the conclusion of the well known Stampacchia Theorem, on variational inequalities, holds on a Banach space X, then X is isomorphic to a Hilbert space. Motivated by this we obtain a relevant result concerning self-dual Banach spaces and investigate some connections between existing notions of orthogonality and self-duality. Moreover, we revisit the notion of the cosine of a linear operator and show that it can be used to characterize Hilbert space structure. Finally, we present some consequences of our results to quadratic forms and to evolution triples.
We study random unconditional convergence for a basis in a Banach space. The connections between this notion and classical unconditionality are explored. In particular, we analyze duality relations, reflexivity, uniqueness of these bases and existence of unconditional subsequences.
In 1979 Pisier proved remarkably that a sequence of independent and identically distributed standard Gaussian random variables determines, via random Fourier series, a homogeneous Banach algebra $\mathscr{P}$ strictly contained in $C(\mathbb{T})$, the class of continuous functions on the unit circle $\mathbb{T}$ and strictly containing the classical Wiener algebra $\mathbb{A}(\mathbb{T})$, that is, $\mathbb{A}(\mathbb{T}) \subsetneqq \mathscr{P} \subsetneqq C(\mathbb{T}).$ This improved some previous results obtained by Zafran in solving a long-standing problem raised by Katznelson. In this pa…
We develop a systematic approach to the study of duality for ideals of Lipschitz maps from a metric space to a Banach space, inspired by the classical theory that relates ideals of operators and tensor norms for Banach spaces, by using the Lipschitz tensor products previously introduced by the same authors. We first study spaces of Lipschitz maps, from a metric space to a dual Banach space, that can be represented canonically as the dual of a Lipschitz tensor product endowed with a Lipschitz cross-norm. We show that several known examples of ideals of Lipschitz maps (Lipschitz maps, Lipschitz …
By adopting the direct method and fixed point method, we prove that the Hyers-Ulam stability of the following additive-quadratic functional equation \begin{equation} f(x+y, z+w)+f(x-y, z-w)-2 f(x, z)-2 f(x, w)=0 \end{equation} in $β$-homogeneous $F$-spaces and quasi-Banach spaces. There are some differences that we consider the target space with the $β$-homogeneous norm and quasi-norm. Overcoming the $β$-homogeneous norm and quasi-norm bottlenecks, we get some new results.
This paper deals with the interplay of the geometry of the norm and the weak topology in Banach spaces. Both dual and intrinsic connections between weak forms of rotundity and smoothness ared discussed. Weakly exposed points, weakly locally uniformly rotund spaces, smoothness, duality and the interplay of all the above are studied.
We prove a Rademacher-type theorem for Lipschitz mappings from a subset of a Carnot group to a Banach homogeneous group, equipped with a suitably weakened Radon-Nikodym property. We provide a metric area formula that applies to these mappings and more generally to all almost everywhere metrically differentiable Lipschitz mappings defined on a Carnot group.
In this note various geometric properties of a Banach space $X$ are characterized by means of weaker corresponding geometric properties involving an ultrapower $X^\mathcal{U}$. The characterizations do not depend on the particular choice of the free ultrafilter $\mathcal{U}$. For example, a point $x\in S_X$ is an MLUR point if and only if $j(x)$ (given by the canonical inclusion $j\colon X \to X^\mathcal{U}$) in $B_{X^\mathcal{U}}$ is an extreme point; a point $x\in S_X$ is LUR if and only if $j(x)$ is not contained in any non-degenerate line segment of $S_{X^\mathcal{U}}$; a Banach space $X$ …
Let $f$ be a Lipschitz map from a subset $A$ of a stratified group to a Banach homogeneous group. We show that directional derivatives of $f$ act as homogeneous homomorphisms at density points of $A$ outside a $σ$-porous set. At density points of $A$ we establish a pointwise characterization of differentiability in terms of directional derivatives. We use these new results to obtain an alternate proof of almost everywhere differentiability of Lipschitz maps from subsets of stratified groups to Banach homogeneous groups satisfying a suitably weakened Radon-Nikodym property. As a consequence we …
Generalizing classical results of the theory of absolutely summing operators, in this paper we characterize the duals of a quite large class of Banach operator ideals defined or characterized by the transformation of vector-valued sequences.
Let $k$ be a local field with valuation ring $O_k$ and residue field $\overline{k}$. We extend Hahn--Banach theorem for the class of seminormed $k$-vector spaces to several classes of locally convex spaces and subspaces over $k$, $O_k$, and $\overline{k}$. We establish analogues of Iwasawa-type duality for several classes of locally convex spaces over $k$, $O_k$, and $\overline{k}$.
Following previous works for the unit ball, we define quasi-radial pseudo-homogeneous symbols on the projective space and obtain the corresponding commutativity results for Toeplitz operators. A geometric interpretation of these symbols in terms of moment maps is developed. This leads us to the introduction of a new family of symbols, extended pseudo-homogeneous, that provide larger commutative Banach algebras generated by Toeplitz operators. This family of symbols provides new commutative Banach algebras generated by Toeplitz operators on the unit ball.
Given a fully symmetric Banach function space $E$ and a decreasing positive weight $w$ on $I = (0, a)$, $0 < a \le \infty $, the generalized Lorentz space $Λ_{E,w}$ is defined as the symmetrization of the canonical copy $E_w$ of $E$ on the measure space associated with the weight. If $E$ is an Orlicz space then $Λ_{E,w}$ is an Orlicz-Lorentz space. An investigation of the Köthe duality of these classes is developed that is parallel to preceding works on Orlicz-Lorentz spaces. First a class of functions $M_{E,w}$, which does not need to be even a linear space, is similarly defined as the symme…
We prove a number of decoupling inequalities for nonhomogeneous random polynomials with coefficients in Banach space. Degrees of homogeneous components enter into comparison as exponents of multipliers of terms of certain Poincaré-type polynomials. It turns out that the fulfillment of most of types of decoupling inequalities may depend on the geometry of Banach space.
We show that a continuous additive positively homogeneous map from a closed not necessarily proper cone in a Banach space onto a Banach space is an open map precisely when it is surjective. This generalization of the usual Open Mapping Theorem for Banach spaces is then combined with Michael's Selection Theorem to yield the existence of a continuous bounded positively homogeneous right inverse of such a surjective map; a strong version of the usual Open Mapping Theorem is then a special case. As another consequence, an improved version of the analogue of Andô's Theorem for an ordered Banach spa…
Reproducing Kernel Hilbert spaces (RKHS) have been a very successful tool in various areas of machine learning. Recently, Barron spaces have been used to prove bounds on the generalisation error for neural networks. Unfortunately, Barron spaces cannot be understood in terms of RKHS due to the strong nonlinear coupling of the weights. This can be solved by using the more general Reproducing Kernel Banach spaces (RKBS). We show that these Barron spaces belong to a class of integral RKBS. This class can also be understood as an infinite union of RKHS spaces. Furthermore, we show that the dual spa…
We introduce the notion of index of summability for pairs of Banach spaces; for Banach spaces E; F, this index plays the role of a kind of measure of how the m-homogeneous polynomials from E to F are far from being absolutely summing. In some cases the optimal index of summability is computed.
We extend and generalize the result of Kalton and Swanson ($Z_2$ is a symplectic Banach space with no Lagrangian subspace) by showing that all higher order Rochgberg spaces $\mathfrak R^{(n)}$ are symplectic Banach spaces with no Lagrangian subspaces. The nontrivial symplectic structure on even spaces is the one induced by the natural duality; while the nontrivial symplectic structure on odd spaces requires perturbation with a complex structure. We will also study symplectic structures on general Banach spaces and, motivated by the unexpected appearance of complex structures, we introduce and …
This paper studies Schauder frames in Banach spaces, a concept which is a natural generalization of frames in Hilbert spaces and Schauder bases in Banach spaces. The associated minimal and maximal spaces are introduced, as are shrinking and boundedly complete Schauder frames. Our main results extend the classical duality theorems on bases to the situation of Schauder frames. In particular, we will generalize James' results on shrinking and boundedly complete bases to frames. Secondly we will extend his characterization of the reflexivity of spaces with unconditional bases to spaces with uncond…
In this paper, we prove that the generator of any bounded analytic semigroup in $(θ,1)$-type real interpolation of its domain and underlying Banach space has maximal $L^1$-regularity, using a duality argument combined with the result of maximal continuous regularity. As an application, we consider maximal $L^1$-regularity of the Dirichlet-Laplacian and the Stokes operator in inhomogeneous $B^s_{q,1}$-type Besov spaces on domains of $\mathbb R^n$, $n\geq 2$.
We analyze a definition of product of Banach spaces that is naturally associated by duality with an abstract notion of space of multiplication operators. This dual relation allows to understand several constructions coming from different fields of the functional analysis, that can be seen as instances of the abstract one when a particular product is considered. Some relevant examples and applications are shown.
Let $G$ be a locally compact group and also let $H$ be a compact subgroup of $G$. It is shown that, if $μ$ is a relatively invariant measure on $G/H$ then there is a well-defined convolution on $L^1(G/H,μ)$ such that the Banach space $L^1(G/H,μ)$ becomes a Banach algebra. We also find a generalized definition of this convolution for other $L^p$-spaces. Finally, we show that various types of involutions can be considered on $G/H$.
Let $1\le p<\infty$. A Banach lattice $E$ is said to be disjointly homogeneous (resp. $p$-disjointly homogeneous) if two arbitrary normalized disjoint sequences from $E$ contain equivalent in $E$ subsequences (resp. every normalized disjoint sequence contains a subsequence equivalent in $E$ to the unit vector basis of $l_p$). Answering a question raised in 2014 by Flores, Hernandez, Spinu, Tradacete, and Troitsky, for each $1<p<\infty$, we construct a reflexive $p$-disjointly homogeneous rearrangement invariant space on $[0,1]$ whose dual is not disjointly homogeneous. Employing methods from i…
Real smooth three-dimensional or higher Banach spaces are isomorphic with respect to the nonlinear structure of Birkhoff-James orthogonality if and only if they are isometrically isomorphic. Moreover, using smooth Radon planes and non-smooth direct sums, in arbitrary dimensions, we construct examples of non-isometric pairs of real Banach spaces that admit norm-preserving homogeneous bicontinuous Birkhoff-James orthogonality preservers among them.
Let $X$ be a complex Banach space and let $J:X \to X^*$ be a duality section on $X$ (i.e. $\langle x,J(x)\rangle=\|J(x)\|\|x\|=\|J(x)\|^2=\|x\|^2$). For any unit vector $x$ and any ($C_0$) contraction semigroup $T=\{e^{tA}:t \geq 0\}$, Goldstein proved that if $X$ is a Hilbert space and if $|\langle T(t) x,J(x)\rangle| \to 1 $ as $t \to \infty$, then $x$ is an eigenvector of $A$ corresponding to a purely imaginary eigenvalue. In this article, we prove the similar result holds if $X$ is a strictly convex complex Banach space.
We present here the General formulation of the problem of existence and construction of upper and lower envelope for an arbitrary function with values from the completion of the ordered set ${\rm S}$ for a certain class of functions with values in ${\rm S}$. The task is parsed only for the simplest case of model class of homogeneous functions. Consider only order-algebraic version without the involvement of the topology.
In this paper we give the isomorphic classification of atomic $H^1(X,d,μ)$, where $(X,d,μ)$ is a space of homogeneous type, hereby completing a line of investigation opened by the work of Bernard Maurey [Ma1], [Ma2], [Ma3] and continued by Lennard Carleson [C] and Przemyslaw Wojtaszczyk [Woj1], [Wpj2].
