The band structure of two-dimensional artificial superlattices in the presence of (Rashba-type) spin-orbit interaction (SOI) is presented. The position and shape of the energy bands in these spintronic crystals depend on the geometry as well as the strength of the SOI, which can be tuned by external gate voltages. For finite mesoscopic arrays we show that their conductance properties can be understood from these spin-dependent band diagrams.
Significant scientific and technological progress in the field of spintronics is based on trilayer magnetic tunnel junction devices which principally rely on the physics of single barrier tunneling. While technologically relevant devices have been prototyped, the physics of single barrier tunneling poses ultimate limitations on the performance of magnetic tunnel junction devices. Here, we propose a fresh route toward high performance magnetic tunnel junctions by making electronic analogs of optical phenomena such as anti-reflections and Fabry-Pèrot resonances. The devices we propose feature an…
We propose a new class of non-uniform superlattice magnetic tunnel junctions (Nu-SLTJs) with the Linear, Gaussian, Lorentzian, and Pöschl-teller width and height based profiles manifesting a sizable enhancement in the TMR($\approx 10^4-10^6\%$) with a significant suppression in the switching bias($\approx$9 folds) owing to the physics of broad-band spin filtering. By exploring the negative differential resistance region in the current-voltage characteristics of the various Nu-SLTJs, we predict the Nu-SLTJs offer the fastest spin transfer torque switching in the order of a few hundred picosecon…
We present a promising route to realize spontaneous magnetic order on the surface of a 3D topological insulator by applying a superlattice potential. The superlattice potential creates tunable van Hove singularities, which, when combined with strong spin-orbit coupling and Coulomb repulsion give rise to a topological meron lattice spin texture. The periodicity of this designer meron lattice can be tuned by varying the periodicity of the superlattice potential. We characterize the magnetic order using Ginzburg-Landau theory and show that the magnetic transition temperature reaches experimentall…

In recent years, the field of antiferromagnetic spintronics has been substantially advanced. Electric-field control is a promising approach to achieving ultra-low power spintronic devices via suppressing Joule heating. In this article, cutting-edge research, including electric-field modulation of antiferromagnetic spintronic devices using strain, ionic liquids, dielectric materials, and electrochemical ionic migration, are comprehensively reviewed. Various emergent topics such as the Neel spin-orbit torque, chiral spintronics, topological antiferromagnetic spintronics, anisotropic magnetoresis…
Realizing a large Landé $g$-factor of electrons in solid-state materials has long been thought of as a rewarding task as it can trigger abundant immediate applications in spintronics and quantum computing. Here, by using metamorphic InAsSb/InSb superlattices (SLs), we demonstrate an unprecedented high value of $g\approx 104$, twice larger than that in bulk InSb, and fully spin-polarized states at low magnetic fields. In addition, we show that the $g$-factor can be tuned on demand from 20 to 110 via varying the SL period. The key ingredients of such a wide tunability are the wavefunction mixing…

Magnetic skyrmions have been in the spotlight since their observation in technologically relevant systems at room temperature. More recently, there has been increasing interest in additional quasiparticles that may exist as stable/metastable spin textures in magnets, such as the skyrmionium and the anti-skyrmionite (i.e., a double-antiskyrmion-skyrmion pair) that have distinct topological characteristics. The next challenge and opportunity, at the same time, is to investigate the use of multiple magnetic quasiparticles as information carriers in a single device for next generation nanocomputin…
Ferromagnetic materials are the widely used source of spin-polarized electrons in spintronic devices, which are controlled by external magnetic fields or spin-transfer torque methods. However, with increasing demand for smaller and faster spintronic components, utilization of spin-orbit phenomena provides promising alternatives. New materials with unique spin textures are highly desirable since all-electric creation and control of spin polarization is expected, where the strength, as well as an arbitrary orientation of the polarization, can be defined without the use of a magnetic field. In th…
Chern insulator ferromagnets are characterized by a quantized anomalous Hall effect, and have so far been identified experimentally in magnetically-doped topological insulator (MTI) thin films and in bilayer graphene moir{é} superlattices. We classify Chern insulator ferromagnets as either spin or orbital, depending on whether the orbital magnetization results from spontaneous spin-polarization combined with spin-orbit interactions, as in the MTI case, or directly from spontaneous orbital currents, as in the moir{é} superlattice case. We argue that in a given magnetic state, characterized for …
Moiré superlattices open an unprecedented opportunity for tailoring interactions between quantum particles and their coupling to electromagnetic fields. Strong superlattice potential generates moiré minibands of excitons -- bound pairs of electrons and holes that reside either in a single layer (intralayer excitons) or two separate layers (interlayer excitons). The twist-angle-controlled interlayer hybridization of carriers can also mix the two types of excitons to combine the strengths of both. Here, we report a direct observation of spatially mixed moiré excitons in angle-aligned WSe2/WS2 an…
The advance of topological photonics has heralded a revolution for manipulating light as well as for the development of novel photonic devices such as topological insulator lasers. Here, we demonstrate topological lasing of circular polarization in a polymer-cholesteric liquid crystal (P-CLC) superlattice, tunable in the visible wavelength regime. By use of the femtosecond-laser direct-writing and self-assembling techniques, we establish the P-CLC superlattice with a controlled mini-band structure and a topological interface defect, thereby achieving a low threshold for robust topological lasi…
Due to low dimensionality, the controlled stacking of the graphene films and their electronic properties are susceptible to environmental changes including strain. The strain-induced modification of the electronic properties such as the emergence and modulation of bandgaps crucially depends on the stacking of the graphene films. However, to date, only the impact of strain on electronic properties of Bernal and AA-stacked bilayer graphene has been extensively investigated in theoretical studies. Exploiting density functional theory and tight-binding calculation, we investigate the impacts of in…
Periodic stacking of topologically trivial and non-trivial layers with opposite symmetry of the valence and conduction bands induces topological interface states that, in the strong coupling limit, hybridize both across the topological and normal insulator layers. Using band structure engineering, such superlattices can be effectively realized using the IV-VI lead tin chalcogenides. This leads to emergent minibands with a tunable topology as demonstrated both by theory and experiments. The topological minibands are proven by magneto-optical spectroscopy, revealing Landau level transitions both…
Spin valves based on materials in which the spin-flip is suppressed by the spatial separation of charge carriers, while maintaining electric neutrality in the valve volume, are considered. The possibility of using these valves as electric batteries is discussed. It is shown that if the potential difference across the valve is controlled, incommensurability effects such as the "devil's staircase" may be expected, which are associated with the Coulomb interaction and redistribution of electrons occurring while the battery is charged and discharged. The effects of the emergence and vanishing of s…
In spin caloritronics, a branch of spintronics, the spin degree of freedom is exploited for thermoelectric conversion and thermal transport. Since the inception of spin caloritronics, many experimental and theoretical studies have focused on clarifying the fundamental physics of the heat-to-spin and heat-to-charge current conversion phenomena in magnetic materials and magnetic hybrid structures, such as the spin Seebeck and anomalous Nernst effects. While research on these phenomena is progressing, there are also many spin-caloritronic phenomena that output heat currents. The observations of s…
