The complex phenomenology of shot quenched YBa2Cu3O6.5 with Tc=100K and 200K levels is compared with laser pulsed analogs with an eye on explaining the presumed Tc=552K of the latter. Shot quenching can produce metastable states with pronounced increases in plane metric and cell volume, accompanied by a rough doubling of Tc to a 100K level of an orthorhombic with 3-fold O coordinated chain Cu (O3 type). These states decay over a non-superconducting transition range to the conventional Tc=50K level of O24. We consider the plane expanded laser pulsed materials to contain aspects of O42 plane n-doped counterparts of the O3 n-doped version of shot quench preparations. In addition, we assume that highly charged p-doped chains of 4-fold O coordination form hole pairs at trijugate position, allowing close approach of the apical O to the electron-doped planes. They are now capable of participating in the bonding with the plane pairs at corresponding 3a0/2 location. The overall pair number is therefore multiplied, and the coupling strengthened, by limited 3-D effects within the Plane-Chain-Plane sandwich. The latter can be seen as an extended chemical bonding system that has the potential to equilibrate contractive and expansive pairs and so obviate the need for distinction of doping type as it may exchange it dynamically. It is argued that indications for a Tc=200K level on shot quenching has a related origin and represents one in series of predicted Tc levels based on bond order principles. Predictions are made where similar effects can be expected in other compound classes.
Using \emph{ab initio} band structure methods and DFT+dynamical mean-field theory approach we explore the possible formation of spin and charge stripes in the Ni-O plane of hole-doped infinite-layer nickelates, $R$NiO$_2$. Our results reveal a remarkable instability of the $C$-type $(110)$ spin state with undistorted lattice towards the formation of the spin-density, charge- and bond-disproportionation stripe phases accompanied by in-plane``breathing''-like distortions of the crystal structure. Our work gives a comprehensive picture of competing charge and spin stripe states, with possible fru…
Motivated by recent experiments on SrCu$_2$(BO$_3$)$_2$, we investigate the ground states of the doped Mott insulator on the Shastry-Sutherland lattice. To provide a unified theoretical framework for both the valence-bond solid state found in undoped SrCu$_2$(BO$_3$)$_2$ and the doped counterpart being pursued in on-going experiments, we analyze the t-J-$V$ model via the bond operator formulation. It is found that novel superconducting states emerge upon doping with their properties crucially depending on the underlying valence bond order. Implications to future experiments are discussed.
To explain the high-temperature superconductivity of hole-doped copper-oxide high-temperature superconductors (HDCO-HTSCs), Anderson proposed a theory: (A) the pseudogap state is a resonating valence-bond (RVB) state below T* and (B) the RVB state translates itself into high-temperature superconducting state below Tc. In this paper we abandon Anderson theory B but still retain Anderson theory A and add three new hypotheses. Jointed three hypotheses with Anderson theory A, we construct an effective Hamiltonian of HDCO-HTSCs and explain why Tc-line is a dome in phase diagram and why HDCO-HTSCs h…
The electronic structure and the single-particle spectral density of a stripe array formed by ladder-like domain walls (DWs) and by antiferromagnetic (AF) domains of width 2 lattice spacings are computed and compared with ARPES spectra from some doped cuprates belonging to the 214 family of compounds. We assume that bond order is formed on legs in DWs and that the phase of the sublattice magnetization changes by Pi across each DW. The intensity map plotted in the coordination frame momentum-energy reproduces quite well the ARPES spectra obtained at the doping level of 15%. We consider this agr…
A well-known feature of CaFe$_{2}$As$_{2}$-based superconductors is the pressure-induced collapsed tetragonal phase that is commonly ascribed to the formation of an interlayer As-As bond. Using detailed X-ray scattering and spectroscopy, we find that Rh-doped Ca$_{0.8}$Sr$_{0.2}$Fe$_{2}$As$_{2}$ does not undergo a first-order phase transition and that local Fe moments persist despite the formation of interlayer As-As bonds. Our density functional theory calculations reveal that the Fe-As bond geometry is critical for stabilizing magnetism and that the pressure-induced drop in the $c$ lattice p…
Motivated by the recent experiments reporting the doping dependence of the short-range charge order (CO) in electron-doped cuprates, we study the resonant x-ray scattering spectrum from d-wave bond-charge fluctuations obtained in the two-dimensional t-J model. We find that (i) the CO is short-range, (ii) the CO peak is pronounced at low temperature, (iii) the peak intensity increases with decreasing carrier doping $δ$ down to $δ\approx$ 0.10 and is substantially suppressed below $δ\approx$ 0.10 due to strong damping, and (iv) the momentum of the CO decreases monotonically down to $δ\approx$ 0.…
Motivated by numerical evidence of the valence bond groundstate of the two-dimensional Heisenberg pyrochlore lattice, we argue using a $t$-$J$ model that it evolves under doping into novel phases characterized by superconductivity coexisting with the underlying valence-bond solid order. A fermionic mean-field theory supplemented by exact diagonalization results provide strong arguments in favor of the stability of such supersolid phases. The resemblance with modulated superconducting patterns in high-$T_c$ cuprates as well as possible relevance to frustrated noncuprate superconductors such as …
We substantiate by calculations that the recently discovered superconductivity below 4 K in 3% boron-doped diamond is caused by electron-phonon coupling of the same type as in MgB$_2$, albeit in 3 dimensions. Holes at the top of the zone-centered, degenerate $σ$-bonding valence band couple strongly to the optical bond-stretching modes. The increase from 2 to 3 dimensions reduces the mode-softening crucial for $T_{c}$ reaching 40 K in MgB$_{2}.$ Even if diamond had the same \emph{bare} coupling constant as MgB$_{2},$ which could be achieved with 10% doping, $T_{c}$ would only be 25 K. Supercond…
The local structure of the parent and doped LaFeAsO1-xFx (pnictide) compounds were studied by x-ray absorption spectroscopy. In the doped system, the Fe-As and Fe-Fe correlations are well modeled by an Einstein model with no low temperature anomalies. For the Fe-As bonds, the Einstein temperatures are identical for the doped (11%) and undoped samples, but the doped sample is found to have a lower level of static disorder. For the Fe-Fe correlation, doping enhances the effective Einstein temperature of Fe-Fe atom correlation. The results suggest that the onset of superconductivity in the F dope…
Recently, there is a series of reports by Wang et al. on the superconductivity in K-doped p-terphenyl (KxC18H14) with the transition temperatures range from 7 to 123 Kelvin. Identifying the structural and bonding character is the key to understand the superconducting phases and the related properties. Therefore we carried out an extensive study on the crystal structures with different doping levels and investigate the thermodynamic stability, structural, electronic, and magnetic properties by the first-principles calculations. Our calculated structures capture most features of the experimental…
We report the first measurement of the optical phonon dispersion in optimally doped single layer Bi2Sr1.6La0.4Cu2O6+delta using inelastic x-ray scattering. We found a strong softening of the Cu-O bond stretching phonon at about q=(0.25,0,0) from 76 to 60 meV, similar to the one reported in other cuprates. A direct comparison with angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy measurements taken on the same sample, revealed an excellent agreement in terms of energy and momentum between the ARPES nodal kink and the soft part of the bond stretching phonon. Indeed, we find that the momentum space where…
We study, using a perturbative renormalization group technique, the phase diagrams of bond-aligned and diagonal Hubbard ladders defined as sections of a square lattice with nearest-neighbor and next-nearest-neighbor hopping. We find that for not too large hole doping and small next-nearest-neighbor hopping the bond-aligned systems exhibit a fully spin-gapped phase while the diagonal systems remain gapless. Increasing the next-nearest-neighbor hopping typically leads to a decrease of the gap in the bond-aligned ladders, and to a transition into a gapped phase in the diagonal ladders. Embedding …
The ground states and excitations of two-dimensional insulating and doped Mott insulators are described by a bond operator formalism. While the method represents the degrees of freedom of an arbitrary antiferromagnet exactly, it is especially suited to systems in which there is a natural pairing of sites into bonds, as in states with spontaneous or explicit spin-Peierls order (or bond-centered charge order). In the undoped insulator, as discussed previously, we obtain both paramagnetic and magnetically-ordered states. We describe the evolution of superconducting order in the ground state with …
We introduce a variational state for one-dimensional two-orbital Hubbard models that intuitively explains the recent computational discovery of pairing in these systems when hole doped. Our Ansatz is an optimized linear superposition of Affleck-Kennedy-Lieb-Tasaki valence bond states, rendering the combination a valence bond liquid dubbed Orbital Resonant Valence Bond. We show that the undoped (one electron/orbital) quantum state of two sites coupled into a global spin singlet is exactly written employing only spin-1/2 singlets linking orbitals at nearest-neighbor sites. Generalizing to longer…
Recent experiments have revealed incommensurate charge density wave (CDW) in the pseudogap regime in underdoped cuprates, e.g. YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{6+δ}$ and HgBa$_2$CuO$_{4+δ}$. However, its relationship with the pseudogap is still controversial. In this work, we take a phenomenological synthesis of the doped resonating valence bond (RVB) state and the CDW order. Starting from the Yang-Rice-Zhang Green's function ansatz for the doped RVB state [Phys. Rev. B {\bf 73}, 174501 (2006)], in which the Fermi surface is partially truncated into four nodal hole-like Fermi pockets by the antinodal RVB gap,…
We propose a new class of ground states for doped Mott insulators in the electron second-quantization representation. They are obtained from a bosonic resonating valence bond (RVB) theory of the t-J model. At half filling, the ground state describes spin correlations of the S=1/2 Heisenberg model very accurately. Its spin degrees of freedom are characterized by RVB pairing of spins, the size of which decreases continuously as holes are doped into the system. Charge degrees of freedom emerge upon doping and are described by twisted holes in the RVB background. We show that the twisted holes exh…
A simple microscopic principle of `Valence bond (nearest neighbor singlet) amplitude maximization '(VBAM) is shown to be present in undoped and optimally doped cuprates and unify the very different orderings such as antiferromagnetism in the Mott insulator and the robust superconductivity accompanied by an enhanced charge and stripe correlations in the optimally doped cuprates. VBAM is nearly synonymous with the energy minimization principle. It is implicit in the RVB theory and thereby makes the predictions of RVB mean field theory of superconductivity qualitatively correct.
We study charge excitation spectra in the two-dimensional $t$-$J$ model on a square lattice to explore a charge-order tendency recently found in electron-doped cuprates around the carrier density 0.15. The static susceptibility of $d$-wave charge density, which corresponds to the nematic susceptibility at the momentum transfer ${\bf q}=(0,0)$, shows two characteristic peaks at momenta of the form ${\bf q}_{1}=(q',q')$ and ${\bf q}_{2}=(q,0)$. These two peaks originate from the so-called $2k_{F}$ scattering processes enhanced by the $d$-wave character of the bond-charge density. The peak at ${\…
Phonons in nearly optimally doped HgBa$_2$CuO$_{4+δ}$ were studied by inelastic X-ray scattering. The dispersion of the low energy modes is well described by a shell model, while the Cu-O bond stretching mode at high energy shows strong softening towards the zone boundary, which deviates strongly from the model. This seems to be common in the hole-doped high-$T_\mathrm{c}$ superconducting cuprates, and, based on this work, not related to a lattice distortion specific to each material.
Unusual quantum phenomena usually emerge upon doping Mott insulators. Using a combinatorial molecular beam epitaxy system integrated with cryogenic scanning tunneling microscopy, we investigate the electronic structure of a modulation-doped Mott insulator Sn/Si(111)-($\sqrt{3}\times \sqrt{3}$)-R30$^\textrm{o}$. In underdoped regions, we observe a universal pseudogap opening around the Fermi level, which changes little with the applied magnetic field and the occurrence of Sn vacancies. The pseudogap gets smeared out at elevated temperatures and alters in size with the spatial confinement of the…
Bismuth perovskites ABiO$_3$ (A = Sr, Ba) host a variety of peculiar phenomena including bond-disproportionated insulating phases and high-temperature superconductivity upon hole doping. While the mechanisms underlying these phenomena are still debated, off-diagonal electron-phonon ($e$-ph) coupling originating from the modulation of the orbital overlaps has emerged as a promising candidate. Here, we employ classical Monte Carlo simulations to study a semiclassical three-orbital model with off-diagonal $e$-ph interactions. We demonstrate the existence of a (bi)polaron correlations that persist…
We propose a theory for doped antiferromagnet based on a bosonic resonating-valence-bond (RVB) state with incorporating the phase string effect. Both antiferromagnetic (AF) and superconducting phase transitions occur naturally within such a bosonic RVB phase. Two distinct metallic regions -- underdoping and optimum-doping -- are also found to be a logic consequence, whose unique features explain the recent neutron-scattering measurements in cuprates.
Fermionizing the charge sector and bosonizing the spin part in the SU(2) slave-boson theory, we derive an effective field theory for dynamics of doped holes in the antiferromagnetically correlated spin background, where spin fluctuations are described by an SO(5) Wess-Zumino-Witten (WZW) theory while dynamics of doped holes is characterized by QED$_{3}$ with a chemical potential term. An important feature of our effective field theory is the coupling term between valance bond fluctuations and doped holes. Considering that valance bond fluctuations are deeply related with monopole excitations o…
Using high-energy diffraction we show that a 4-unit-cell superstructure, q0=(1/4,0,0), along the shorter Cu-Cu bonds coexists with superconductivity in optimally doped YBCO. A complex set of anisotropic atomic displacements on neighboring CuO chain planes, BaO planes, and CuO2 planes, respectively, correlated over ~3-6 unit cells gives rise to diffuse superlattice peaks. Our observations are consistent with the presence of Ortho-IV nanodomains containing these displacements.
We investigate the nature of the electronic ground state and electron-lattice couplings for doped chains of CuO_4 plaquettes or CuO_6 octahedra. The undoped configuration implies here Cu 3d^9 and O 2p^6 formal valence states. The results of multiconfiguration calculations on 4-plaquette (or 4-octahedra) linear clusters indicate strong electron-lattice interactions and polaronic behavior of the doped particles, for both electron and hole doping. For certain phases of the oxygen-ion half-breathing distortions a multi-well energy landscape is predicted. Since each well is associated to carriers l…
We study charge ordered d-wave resonating valence bond states (dRVB) in the doped cuprates, and estimate the energies of these states in a generalized $t-J $ model by using a renormalized mean field theory. The long range Coulomb potential tends to modulate the charge density in favor of the charge ordered RVB state. The possible relevance to the recently observed $4 \times 4$ checkerboard patterns in tunnelling conductance in high $T_c$ cuprates is discussed.
A phenomenological bond order model predicting doping curves [Tc vs doped charge, c] of cuprates is found to have wider applicability. In this model Tc is dependent on the density of electronic pair crystals [EC] in a covalently bonding layer structure and on a layer Isolation factor, f [ECI model]. Characteristic doping curve events such as optima are correlated with a select number of EC with pair repeats corresponding to multiples of lattice parameters such as c=2/3x4=0.167, where 3x4 represent pair periodicity of 3a0 and 4b0. At these EC all doped charge is converted into pairs according t…
The distance of apical O to planes, d, is introduced as serving as an arbiter in the dispute between different local O coordination (n) in determining charge equilibration in YBa2Cu3Oy. We assign reported cell volume and plane expansion (V+P+) on shot quenching (SQ) from above 600K to O- connected with (3) at a critical cluster size for increased d, maximizing at 673K and y=6.44. This and a Tc=100K level is ascribed to self-doped apical O-, acting as a plane reducer and expander (P+). By contrast, slow cooling to 260K produces conventional cell volume contracted varieties (V-P-), based on plan…
We study by the Gutzwiller approximation the melting of the valence bond crystal phase of a bilayer Hubbard model at sufficiently large inter-layer hopping. We find that a superconducting domain, with order parameter $d_{z^2-r^2}$, $z$ being the inter-layer direction and $r$ the intra-layer one, is stabilized variationally close to the half-filled non-magnetic Mott insulator. Superconductivity exists at half-filling just at the border of the Mott transition and extends away from half-filling into a whole region till a critical doping, beyond which it gives way to a normal metal phase. This res…
LaCuO_2.5 is a system of coupled, two-chain, cuprate ladders which may be doped systematically by Sr substitution. Motivated by the recent synthesis of single crystals, we investigate theoretically the possibility of superconductivity in this compound. We use a model of spin fluctuation-mediated superconductivity, where the pairing potential is strongly peaked at πin the ladder direction. We solve the coupled gap equations on the bonding and antibonding ladder bands to find superconducting solutions across the range of doping, and discuss their relevance to the real material.
