We investigate numerically the magnetisation dynamics of an array of nano-disks interacting through the magneto-dipolar coupling. In the presence of a temperature gradient, the chain reaches a non-equilibrium steady state where energy and magnetisation currents propagate. This effect can be described as the flow of energy and particle currents in an off-equilibrium discrete nonlinear Schrödinger (DNLS) equation. This model makes transparent the transport properties of the system and allows for a precise definition of temperature and chemical potential for a precessing spin. The present study proposes a novel setup for the spin-Seebeck effect, and shows that its qualitative features can be captured by a general oscillator-chain model
We study the stationary properties of the Ising model that, while evolving towards its equilibrium state at temperature $T$ according to the Glauber dynamics, is stochastically reset to its fixed initial configuration with magnetisation $m_0$ at a constant rate $r$. Resetting breaks detailed balance and drives the system to a non-equilibrium stationary state where the magnetisation acquires a nontrivial distribution, leading to a rich phase diagram in the $(T,r)$ plane. We establish these results exactly in one-dimension and present scaling arguments supported by numerical simulations in two-d…
We consider the out-of-equilibrium dynamics generated by joining two domains with arbitrary opposite magnetisations. We study the stationary state which emerges by the unitary evolution via the spin $1/2$ XXZ Hamiltonian, in the gapless regime, where the system develops a stationary spin current. Using the generalized hydrodynamic approach, we present a simple formula for the space-time profile of the spin current and the magnetisation exact in the limit of large times. As a remarkable effect, we show that the stationary state has a strongly discontinuous dependence on the strength of interact…
The Arak process is a solvable stochastic process which generates coloured patterns in the plane. Patterns are made up of a variable number of random non-intersecting polygons. We show that the distribution of Arak process states is the Gibbs distribution of its states in thermodynamic equilibrium in the grand canonical ensemble. The sequence of Gibbs distributions form a new model parameterised by temperature. We prove that there is a phase transition in this model, for some non-zero temperature. We illustrate this conclusion with simulation results. We measure the critical exponents of this …
We study the non-equilibrium time evolution of the average transverse magnetisation and end-to-end correlation functions of the random Ising quantum chain. Starting with fully magnetised states, either in the $x$ or $z$ direction, we compute numerically the average quantities. They show similar behaviour to the homogeneous chain, that is an algebraic decay in time toward a stationary state. During the time evolution, the spatial correlations, measured from one end to the other of the chain, are building up and finally at long time they reach a size-dependent constant depending on the distance …
We study experimentally and numerically the dynamics of the spin ice material Dy$_2$Ti$_2$O$_7$ in the low temperature ($T$) and moderate magnetic field ($\mathbf{B}$) regime ($T\in[0.1,1.7]K$, $B\in[0,0.3]T$). Our objective is to understand the main physics shaping the out-of-equilibrium magnetisation vs. temperature curves in two different regimes. Very far from equilibrium, turning on the magnetic field after having cooled the system in zero field (ZFC) can increase the concentration of magnetic monopoles; this accelerates the dynamics. Similarly to electrolytes, this occurs through dissoci…
We investigate a simplified model of two fully connected magnetic systems maintained at different temperatures by virtue of being connected to two independent thermal baths while simultaneously being inter-connected with each other. Using generating functional analysis, commonly used in statistical mechanics, we find exactly soluble expressions for their individual magnetisations that define a two-dimensional non-linear map, the equations of which have the same form as those obtained for densely connected equilibrium systems. Steady states correspond to the fixed points of this map, separating…
We solved the equilibrium meanfield equation of state of Ising ferromagnet (obtained from Bragg-Williams theory) by Newton-Raphson method. The number of iterations required to get a convergent solution (within a specified accuracy) of equilibrium magnetisation, at any particular temperature, is observed to diverge in a power law fashion as the temperature approaches the critical value. This was identified as the critical slowing down. The exponent is also estimated. This value of the exponent is compared with that obtained from analytic solution. Besides this, the numerical results are also co…
We uncover a finite-time dynamical phase transition in the thermal relaxation of a mean-field magnetic model. The phase transition manifests itself as a cusp singularity in the probability distribution of the magnetisation that forms at a critical time. The transition is due to a sudden switch in the dynamics, characterised by a dynamical order parameter. We derive a dynamical Landau theory for the transition that applies to a range of systems with scalar, parity-invariant order parameters. Close to criticalilty, our theory reveals an exact mapping between the dynamical and equilibrium phase t…
The one-dimensional Ising model is easily generalized to a \textit{genuinely nonequilibrium} system by coupling alternating spins to two thermal baths at different temperatures. Here, we investigate the full time dependence of this system. In particular, we obtain the evolution of the magnetisation, starting with arbitrary initial conditions. For slightly less general initial conditions, we compute the time dependence of all correlation functions, and so, the probability distribution. Novel properties, such as oscillatory decays into the steady state, are presented. Finally, we comment on the …
The entropy produced when a quantum system is driven away from equilibrium can be decomposed in two parts, one related with populations and the other with quantum coherences. The latter is usually based on the so-called relative entropy of coherence, a widely used quantifier in quantum resource theories. In this paper we argue that, despite satisfying fluctuation theorems and having a clear resource-theoretic interpretation, this splitting has shortcomings. First, it predicts that at low temperatures the entropy production will always be dominated by the classical term, irrespective of the qua…
Non-equilibrium systems lack an explicit characterisation of their steady state like the Boltzmann distribution for equilibrium systems. This has drastic consequences for the inference of parameters of a model when its dynamics lacks detailed balance. Such non-equilibrium systems occur naturally in applications like neural networks or gene regulatory networks. Here, we focus on the paradigmatic asymmetric Ising model and show that we can learn its parameters from independent samples of the non-equilibrium steady state. We present both an exact inference algorithm and a computationally more eff…
We investigate the dynamical fixed points of the zero temperature Glauber dynamics in Ising-like models. The stability analysis of the fixed points in the mean field calculation shows the existence of an exponent that depends on the coordination number $z$ in the Ising model. For the generalised voter model, a phase diagram is obtained based on this study. Numerical results for the Ising model for both the mean field case and short ranged models on lattices with different values of $z$ are also obtained. A related study is the behaviour of the exit probability $E(x_0)$, defined as the probabil…
A general formalism for the study of excitations above equilibrium in Bethe ansatz solvable models is presented. Nonzero temperature expressions for dressed energy, momentum, spin and charge are obtained, and it is found that the dressed spin and charge are in general momentum dependent. For an electronic model one may only have spin-charge separation at zero temperature where the ground state is half-filled and has zero magnetisation. Finally, the excitations of the Hubbard-Shastry models are examined in detail.
We investigate the dynamics of a non-interacting spin system, undergoing coherent Rabi oscillations, in the presence of stochastic resetting. We show that resetting generally induces long-range quantum and classical correlations both in the emergent dissipative dynamics and in the non-equilibrium stationary state. Moreover, for the case of conditional reset protocols -- where the system is reinitialized to a state dependent on the outcome of a preceding measurement -- we show that, in the thermodynamic limit, the spin system can feature collective behavior which results in a phenomenology remi…
We describe a mechanism to control energy and magnetisation currents in an artificial spin-chain, consisting of an array of Permalloy nano-disks coupled through the magneto-dipolar interaction. The chain is kept out of equilibrium by two thermal baths with different temperatures connected to its ends, which control the current propagation. Transport is enhanced by applying a uniform radio frequency pump field resonating with some of the spin-wave modes of the chain. Moreover, the two currents can be controlled independently by tuning the static field applied on the chain. Thus we describe two …
We study the non-equilibrium evolution of a one-dimensional quantum Ising chain with spatially disordered, time-dependent, transverse fields characterised by white noise correlation dynamics. We establish pre-thermalization in this model, showing that the quench dynamics of the on-site transverse magnetisation first approaches a metastable state unaffected by noise fluctuations, and then relaxes exponentially fast towards an infinite temperature state as a result of the noise. We also consider energy transport in the model, starting from an inhomogeneous state with two domain walls which separ…
In contrast to lattice systems where powerful numerical techniques such as matrix product state based methods are available to study the non-equilibrium dynamics, the non-equilibrium behaviour of continuum systems is much harder to simulate. We demonstrate here that Hamiltonian truncation methods can be efficiently applied to this problem, by studying the quantum quench dynamics of the 1+1 dimensional Ising field theory using a truncated free fermionic space approach. After benchmarking the method with integrable quenches corresponding to changing the mass in a free Majorana fermion field theo…
