An improved version of elastoresistivity measurement based on Montgometry geometry has been used to recollect all the data presented in the manuscript. All the qualitative conclusions in the previous version remain valid, but with the new technique all quantitative statements made in the paper are now precise
A key actor in the conventional theory of superconductivity is the induced interaction between electrons mediated by the exchange of virtual collective fluctuations, originally phonons. Other collective modes that can play the same role, especially spin-fluctuations, have been widely discussed in the context of high-temperature and heavy Fermion superconductors. The strength of such collective fluctuations is measured by the associated susceptibility. Here we use differential elastoresistance measurements on five optimally doped Fe-based superconductors to reveal that a diverging \emph{nematic} susceptibility appears to be a generic feature in the optimal doping regime of these materials. The observation motivates consideration of the effects of nematic fluctuations on the superconducting pairing interaction in this family of compounds, and possibly beyond.
Electronic nematicity in correlated metals often occurs alongside another instability such as magnetism. As a result, the question remains whether nematicity alone can drive unconventional superconductivity or anomalous (quantum critical) transport in such systems. In FeSe, nematicity emerges in isolation, providing a unique opportunity to address this question. Studies to date, however, have proved inconclusive; while signatures of nematic criticality are observed upon sulfur substitution, they appear to be quenched under the application of pressure due to the emergent magnetism. Here, we stu…
Theoretically, it is commonly held that in metals near a nematic quantum critical point the electronic excitations become incoherent on the entire `hot' Fermi surface, triggering non Fermi liquid behavior. However, such conclusions are based on electron-only theories, ignoring a symmetry-allowed coupling between the electronic nematic variable and a suitable crystalline lattice strain. Here we show that including this coupling leads to entirely different conclusions because the critical fluctuations are mostly cutoff by the non-critical lattice shear modes. At sufficiently low temperatures the…
The extent to which quantum criticality drives the physics of iron pnictides is a central question in the field. Earlier theoretical considerations were based on an effective field theory, and the proposed realization in P-doped iron arsenides has received extensive experimental evidence. To connect the quantum critical behavior with the underlying electronic physics, it is important to analyze it within microscopic models. Here, we do so for a multi-orbital model containing both Hubbard and Hund's interactions, by a variational Monte Carlo method based on Jastrow-Slater wave functions that al…
At the nematic quantum critical point that exists in the $d_{x^2-y^2}$-wave superconducting dome of cuprates, the massless nodal fermions interact strongly with the quantum critical fluctuation of nematic order. We study this problem by means of renormalization group approach and show that, the fermion damping rate $\left|\mathrm{Im}Σ^R(ω)\right|$ vanishes more rapidly than the energy $ω$ and the quasiparticle residue $Z_f\rightarrow 0$ in the limit $ω\rightarrow 0$. The nodal fermions thus constitute an unconventional non-Fermi liquid that represents an even weaker violation of Fermi liquid t…

We present the strain and temperature dependence of an anomalous nematic phase in optimally doped BaFe$_2$(As,P)$_2$. Polarized ultrafast optical measurements reveal broken 4-fold rotational symmetry in a temperature range above $T_c$ in which bulk probes do not detect a phase transition. Using ultrafast microscopy, we find that the magnitude and sign of this nematicity vary on a ${50{-}100}~μ$m length scale, and the temperature at which it onsets ranges from 40 K near a domain boundary to 60 K deep within a domain. Scanning Laue microdiffraction maps of local strain at room temperature indica…
To reveal the origin of the "nematic electronic fluid phase" in Sr$_3$Ru$_2$O$_7$, we apply the self-consistent vertex correction analysis to the ($d_{xz},d_{yz}$)-orbital Hubbard model. It is found that the Aslamazov-Larkin type vertex correction causes the strong coupling between spin and orbital fluctuations, which corresponds to the Kugel-Khomskii spin-orbital coupling in the local picture. Due to this mechanism, orbital nematic order with $C_2$ symmetry is induced by the magnetic quantum criticality in multiorbital systems, while this mechanism is ignored in the random-phase-approximation…
The nematic electronic state and its associated nematic critical fluctuations have emerged as potential candidates for superconducting pairing in various unconventional superconductors. However, in most materials their coexistence with other magnetically-ordered phases poses significant challenges in establishing their importance. Here, by combining chemical and hydrostatic physical pressure in FeSe$_{0.89}$S$_{0.11}$, we provide a unique access to a clean nematic quantum phase transition in the absence of a long-range magnetic order. We find that in the proximity of the nematic phase transiti…
Two ordering states, antiferromagnetism and nematicity, have been observed in most iron-based superconductors (SCs). In contrast to those SCs, the newly discovered SC CaK(Fe$_{1-x}$Ni$_x$)$_4$As$_4$ exhibits an antiferromagnetic (AFM) state, called hedgehog spin-vortex crystal structure, without nematic order, providing the opportunity for the investigation into the relationship between spin fluctuations and SC without any effects of nematic fluctuations. Our $^{75}$As nuclear magnetic resonance studies on CaK(Fe$_{1-x}$Ni$_x$)$_4$As$_4$ (0$\le x\le$ 0.049) revealed that CaKFe$_4$As$_4$ is loc…
The Ising nematic quantum critical point (QCP) associated with the zero temperature transition from a symmetric to a nematic {\it metal} is an exemplar of metallic quantum criticality. We have carried out a minus sign-free quantum Monte Carlo study of this QCP for a two dimensional lattice model with sizes up to $24\times 24$ sites. The system remains non-superconducting down to the lowest accessible temperatures. The results exhibit critical scaling behavior over the accessible ranges of temperature, (imaginary) time, and distance. This scaling behavior has remarkable similarities with recent…
We study how superconducting Tc is affected as an electronic system in a tetragonal environment is tuned to a nematic quantum critical point (QCP). Including coupling of the electronic nematic variable to the relevant lattice strain restricts criticality only to certain high symmetry directions. This allows a weak-coupling treatment, even at the QCP. We develop a criterion distinguishing weak and strong Tc enhancements upon approaching the QCP. We show that negligible Tc enhancement occurs only if pairing is dominated by a non-nematic interaction away from the QCP, and simultaneously if the el…
The concept of a vestigial nematic order emerging from a "mother" spin or charge density-wave state has been applied to describe the phase diagrams of several systems, including unconventional superconductors. In a perfectly clean system, the two orders appear simultaneously via a first-order quantum phase transition, implying the absence of quantum criticality. Here, we investigate how this behavior is affected by impurity-free droplets that are naturally present in inhomogeneous systems. Due to their quantum dynamics, finite-size droplets sustain long-range nematic order but not long-range d…
Nematicity is ubiquitous in electronic phases of high-$T_c$ superconductors, particularly in the Fe-based systems. We used inelastic x-ray scattering to extract the temperature-dependent nematic correlation length $ξ$ from the anomalous softening of acoustic phonon modes in FeSe, underdoped Ba(Fe$_{0.97}$Co$_{0.03}$)$_2$As$_2$ and optimally doped Ba(Fe$_{0.94}$Co$_{0.06}$)$_2$As$_2$. In all cases, we find that $ξ$ is well described by a power law $(T-T_0)^{-1/2}$ extending over a wide temperature range. We attributed this mean-field behavior and the extended fluctuation regime to a sizable nem…
Quantum criticality in iron pnictides involves both the nematic and antiferromagnetic degrees of freedom, but the relationship between the two types of fluctuations has yet to be clarified. Here we study this problem in the presence of a small external uniaxial potential, which breaks the $C_4$-symmetry in the B$_{1g}$ sector. We establish an identity that connects the spin excitation anisotropy, which is the difference of the dynamical spin susceptibilities at $\vec{Q}_1=\left(π,0\right)$ and $\vec{Q}_2=\left(0,π\right)$, with the dynamical magnetic susceptibility and static nematic susceptib…
Antiferromagnetic (AF) spin fluctuations are commonly believed to play a key role in electron pairing of cuprate superconductors. In electron-doped cuprates, it is still in paradox about the interplay among different electronic states in quantum perturbations, especially between superconducting and magnetic states. Here, we report a systematic transport study on cation-optimized La2-xCexCuO4 (x = 0.10) thin films in high magnetic fields. We find an AF quantum phase transition near 60 T, where the Hall number jumps from nH =-x to nH = 1-x, resembling the change of nH at the AF boundary (xAF = 0…
Nematicity in the heavily hole-doped iron pnictide superconductors remains controversial. Sizeable nematic fluctuations and even nematic orders far from a magnetic instability were declared in RbFe$_2$As$_2$ and its sister compounds. Here we report a systematic elastoresistance study of series of isovalent- and electron-doped KFe$_2$As$_2$ crystals. We found divergent elastoresistance upon cooling for all the crystals along their [110] direction. The amplitude of elastoresistivity diverges if K is substituted with larger ions or if the system is driven towards a Lifshitz transition. However, w…
We use scanning tunneling microscopy to investigate the doping dependence of quasiparticle interference (QPI) in NaFe1-xCoxAs iron-based superconductors. The goal is to study the relation between nematic fluctuations and Cooper pairing. In the parent and underdoped compounds, where four-fold rotational symmetry is broken macroscopically, the QPI patterns reveal strong rotational anisotropy. At optimal doping, however, the QPI patterns are always four-fold symmetric. We argue this implies small nematic susceptibility and hence insignificant nematic fluctuation in optimally doped iron pnictides.…
Forward and backscattering play an exceptional role in the physics of two-dimensional interacting fermions. In a Fermi liquid, both give rise to a non-analytic $ω^2 \log(ω)$ form of the fermionic scattering rate at second order in the interaction. Here we argue that higher powers of $\log(ω)$ appearin the backscattering contribution at higher orders. We show that these terms come from "planar" processes, which are effectively one-dimensional. This is explicitly demonstated by extending a Fermi liquid to the limit of $N \gg 1$ fermionic flavors, when only planar processes survive. We sum the le…
Nematicity is ubiquitous in electronic phases of high-$T_c$ superconductors, particularly in the Fe-based systems. While several experiments have probed nematic fluctuations, they have been restricted to uniform or momentum averaged fluctuations. Here, we investigate the behavior of finite-momentum nematic fluctuations by utilizing the anomalous softening of acoustic phonon modes in optimally doped Ba(Fe$_{0.94}$Co$_{0.06}$)$_2$As$_2$. We determine the nematic correlation length and find that it sharply changes its $T$-dependence at $T_c$, revealing a strong connection between nematicity and s…
During the last decade, translational and rotational symmetry-breaking phases -- density wave order and electronic nematicity -- have been established as generic and distinct features of many correlated electron systems, including pnictide and cuprate superconductors. However, in cuprates, the relationship between these electronic symmetry-breaking phases and the enigmatic pseudogap phase remains unclear. Here, we employ resonant x-ray scattering in a cuprate high-temperature superconductor La$_{1.6-x}$Nd$_{0.4}$Sr$_{x}$CuO$_{4}$ (Nd-LSCO) to navigate the cuprate phase diagram, probing the rel…
Recent studies in heavily hole-doped iron-based superconductor RbFe$_2$As$_2$ have suggested the emergence of novel electronic nematicity directed along the Fe-As direction, 45$^\circ$ rotated from the usual nematicity ubiquitously found in BaFe$_2$As$_2$ and related materials. This motivates us to study the physical properties of Ba$_{1-x}$Rb$_{x}$Fe$_{2}$As$_{2}$, details of which remain largely unexplored. Here we report on the normal-state charge transport in Ba$_{1-x}$Rb$_{x}$Fe$_{2}$As$_{2}$ superconductors by using high-quality single crystals in the range of Rb concentration $0.14\le x…
We consider a low $T_c$ metallic superconductor weakly coupled to the soft fluctuations associated with proximity to a nematic quantum critical point (NQCP). We show that: 1) a BCS-Eliashberg treatment remains valid outside of a parametrically narrow interval about the NQCP; 2) the symmetry of the superconducting state (d-wave, s-wave, p-wave) is typically determined by the non-critical interactions, but $T_c$ is enhanced by the nematic fluctuations in all channels; 3) in 2D, this enhancement grows upon approach to criticality up to the point at which the weak coupling approach breaks-down, bu…
Within the Hubbard-Holstein model, we evaluate the various crossover lines marking the opening of pseudogaps in the cuprates, which, in our scenario, are ruled by the proximity to a charge-ordering quantum criticality (stripe formation). We provide also an analysis of their isotopic dependencies, as produced by critical fluctuations. We find no isotopic shift of the temperature $T^0$ marked as a reduction of the quasiparticle density of states in various experiments, and a substantial positive shift of the pseudogap-formation temperature $T^*$. We infer that the superconducting critical temper…
We report a high magnetic field study up to 55 T of the nearly optimally doped iron-pnictide superconductor Ca$_{10}$(Pt$_{3}$As$_{8}$) ((Fe$_{1-x}$Pt$_{x}$)$_{2}$As$_{2}$)$_{5}$ (x=0.078(6)) with a Tc 10 K using magnetic torque, tunnel diode oscillator technique and transport measurements. We determine the superconducting phase diagram, revealing an anisotropy of the irreversibility field up to a factor of 10 near Tc and signatures of multiband superconductivity. Unexpectedly, we find a spin-flop like anomaly in magnetic torque at 22 T, when the magnetic field is applied perpendicular to the …
Superconductivity in BaFe2(As1-xPx)2 iron pnictides emerges when its in-plane two-dimensional (2D) orthorhombic lattice distortion associated with nematic phase at Ts and three-dimensional (3D) collinear antiferromagnetic (AF) order at TN (Ts = TN) are gradually suppressed with increasing x, reaching optimal superconductivity around x = 0.30 with Tc $\approx$ 30 K. Here we show that a moderate uniaxial pressure along the c-axis in BaFe2(As0.70P0.30)2 spontaneously induces a 3D collinear AF order with TN = Ts > 30 K, while only slightly suppresses Tc. Although a ~ 400 MPa pressure compresses th…
The in-plane London penetration depth, $Δλ(T)$, was measured using a tunnel diode resonator technique in single crystals of Ba$_{1-x}$K$_{x}$Fe$_{2}$As$_{2}$ with doping levels $x$ ranging from heavily underdoped, $x$=0.16 ($T_{c}$=7~K) to nearly optimally doped, $x$= 0.34 ($T_{c}=$39 K). Exponential saturation of $Δλ(T)$ in the $T\to0$ limit is found in optimally doped samples, with the superfluid density $ρ_{s}(T)\equiv(λ(0)/λ(T))^{2}$ quantitatively described by a self-consistent $γ$-model with two nodeless isotropic superconducting gaps. As the doping level is decreased towards the extreme…
Metallic quantum critical phenomena are believed to play a key role in many strongly correlated materials, including high temperature superconductors. Theoretically, the problem of quantum criticality in the presence of a Fermi surface has proven to be highly challenging. However, it has recently been realized that many models used to describe such systems are amenable to numerically exact solution by quantum Monte Carlo (QMC) techniques, without suffering from the fermion sign problem. In this article, we review the status of the understanding of metallic quantum criticality, and the recent p…
We present $^{77}$Se-NMR measurements on FeSe$_{1-x}$S$_x$ samples with sulfur content $x=0,9,15$ and $29\%$. Twinned nematic domains are observed in the NMR spectrum for all samples except $x=29\%$. The NMR spin-lattice relaxation rate shows that magnetic fluctuations are initially enhanced between $x=0\%$ and $x=9\%$, but are strongly suppressed for higher $x$ values. The observed behavior of the magnetic fluctuations parallels the superconducting transition temperature $T_c$ in these materials, providing strong evidence for the primary importance of magnetic fluctuations for superconductivi…
We calculate the resistivity associated with an Ising-nematic quantum critical point in the presence of disorder and acoustic phonons in the lattice model. We use the memory-matrix transport theory, which has a crucial advantage compared to other methods of not relying on the existence of well-defined quasiparticles in the low-energy effective theory. As a result, we obtain that by including an inevitable interaction between the nematic fluctuations and the elastic degrees of freedom of the lattice (parametrized by the nemato-elastic coupling $κ_{\text{latt}}$), the resistivity $ρ(T)$ of the s…
High temperature superconductivity emerges in the vicinity of competing strongly correlated phases. In the iron-based superconductor $Ba(Fe_{1-x}Co_{x})_{2}As_{2}$, the superconducting state shares the composition-temperature phase diagram with an electronic nematic phase and an antiferromagnetic phase that break the crystalline rotational symmetry. Symmetry considerations suggest that anisotropic strain can enhance these competing phases and thus suppress the superconductivity. Here we study the effect of anisotropic strain on the superconducting transition in single crystals of $Ba(Fe_{1-x}C…
We have systematically studied the nematic susceptibility in non-superconducting Ba(Fe$_{1-x}$TM$_{x}$)$_2$As$_2$ (TM = Cr, Mn, V and Cu) by measuring the uniaxial pressure dependence of the resistivity along the Fe-As-Fe direction. The nematic susceptibilities in all samples show the Curie-Weiss-like behavior at high temperatures, where the nematic Curie constant $A_n$ can be derived, similar to the Curie constant in a paramagnetism. While all these dopants do not introduce superconductivity in BaFe$_2$As$_2$, their effects on nematic fluctuations are different. In Mn, Cr and V doped samples,…
A quantum critical point (QCP) is a point in a system's phase diagram at which an order is completely suppressed at absolute zero temperature (T). The presence of a quantum critical point manifests itself in the finite-T physical properties, and often gives rise to new states of matter. Superconductivity in the cuprates and in heavy fermion materials is believed by many to be mediated by fluctuations associated with a quantum critical point. In the recently-discovered iron-pnictide high temperature superconductors, it is unknown whether a QCP exists or not in a carrier-doped system. Here we re…
We used transport and inelastic neutron scattering to study the optimally phosphorus-doped BaFe$_2$(As$_{0.7}$P$_{0.3}$)$_2$ superconductor ($T_c = 30$ K). In the normal state, we find that the previously reported linear temperature dependence of the resistivity below room temperature extends to $\sim$ 500 K. Our analysis of the temperature and energy ($E=\hbarω$) dependence of spin dynamical susceptibility at the antiferromagnetic (AF) ordering wave vector $χ^{\prime\prime}({\bf Q}_{\rm AF},ω)$ reveal an $ω/ T$ scaling within $1.1<E/k_BT<110$. These results suggest that the linear temperature…
By measuring the polarization changes in THz, infrared, and visible radiation over an extended energy range (3-2330 meV), we observe symmetry-breaking in cuprate high temperature superconductors over wide energy, doping, and temperature ranges. We measure the polarization rotation and ellipticity of transmitted radiation though thin films as the sample is rotated. We observe a two-fold rotational symmetry in the Faraday angle, which is associated with linear dichroism (LD) and occurs when electromagnetic radiation polarized along one direction is absorbed more strongly than radiation polarized…
Using polarization-resolved electronic Raman scattering we study under-doped, optimally-doped and over-doped Ba$_{1-x}$K$_{x}$Fe$_2$As$_2$ samples in the normal and superconducting states. We show that low-energy nematic fluctuations are universal for all studied doping range. In the superconducting state, we observe two distinct superconducting pair breaking peaks corresponding to one large and one small superconducting gaps. In addition, we detect a collective mode below the superconducting transition in the B$_{2g}$ channel and determine the evolution of its binding energy with doping. Poss…
We review recent numerical studies of two-dimensional (2D) Dirac fermion theories that exhibit an unusual mechanism of topological protection against Anderson localization. These describe surface-state quasiparticles of time-reversal invariant, three-dimensional (3D) topological superconductors (TSCs), subject to the effects of quenched disorder. Numerics reveal a surprising connection between 3D TSCs in classes AIII, CI, and DIII, and 2D quantum Hall effects in classes A, C, and D. Conventional arguments derived from the non-linear $σ$-model picture imply that most TSC surface states should A…
Resistivity, Hall effect and magnetoresistance have been investigated systematically on single crystals of Ba$_{1-x}$K$_x$Fe$_2$As$_2$ ranging from undoped to optimally doped regions. A systematic evolution of the quasiparticle scattering has been observed. It is found that the resistivity in the normal state of Ba$_{1-x}$K$_x$Fe$_2$As$_2$ is insensitive to the potassium doping concentration, which is very different from the electron doped counterpart Ba(Fe$_{1-x}$Co$_{x}$)$_{2}$As$_{2}$, where the resistivity at 300 K reduces to half value of the undoped one when the system is optimally doped…
The recent discovery of a nonsaturating linear magnetoresistance in several correlated electron systems near a quantum critical point has revealed an interesting interplay between the linear magnetoresistance and the zero-field linear-in-temperature resistivity. These studies suggest a possible role of quantum criticality on the observed linear magnetoresistance. Here, we report our discovery of a nonsaturating, linear magnetoresistance in Mo$_8$Ga$_{41}$, a nearly isotropic strong electron-phonon coupling superconductor with a linear-in-temperature resistivity from the transition temperature …
We present a \asnmr Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) and resistivity study of the effect of 5.5 MeV proton irradiation on the optimal electron doped ($x=$ 0.068) and overdoped ($x=$ 0.107) Ba(Fe$_{1-x}$Rh$_x$)$_2$As$_2$ iron based superconductors. While the proton induced defects only mildly suppress the critical temperature and increase residual resistivity in both compositions, sizable broadening of the NMR spectra was observed in all the irradiated samples at low temperature. The effect is significantly stronger in the optimally doped sample where the Curie Weiss temperature dependence of t…
