We propose a \textit{purely combinatorial algorithm} for \mkvc{} in bipartite graphs, achieving approximation ratio~0.7. The only combinatorial algorithms currently known until now for this problem are the natural greedy algorithm, that achieves ratio 0.632, and an easy~$2/3$-approximation algorithm presented in \cite{DBLP:journals/corr/BonnetEPS14}.
Our goal in this paper is to propose a \textit{combinatorial algorithm} that beats the only such algorithm known previously, the greedy one. We study the polynomial approximation of the Maximum Vertex Cover Problem in bipartite graphs by a purely combinatorial algorithm and present a computer assisted analysis of it, that finds the worst case approximation guarantee that is bounded below by~0.821.
Some rigorous results and statistics of the solution space of Vertex-Covers on bipartite graphs are given in this paper. Based on the $K\ddot{o}nig$'s theorem, an exact solution space expression algorithm is proposed and statistical analysis of the nodes' states is provided. The statistical results fit well with the algorithmic results until the emergence of the unfrozen core, which makes the fluctuation of statistical quantities and causes the replica symmetric breaking in the solutions. Besides, the entropy of bipartite Vertex-Cover solutions is calculated with the clustering entropy using a…
We introduce a weighted version of the ranking algorithm by Karp et al. (STOC 1990), and prove a competitive ratio of 0.6534 for the vertex-weighted online bipartite matching problem when online vertices arrive in random order. Our result shows that random arrivals help beating the 1-1/e barrier even in the vertex-weighted case. We build on the randomized primal-dual framework by Devanur et al. (SODA 2013) and design a two dimensional gain sharing function, which depends not only on the rank of the offline vertex, but also on the arrival time of the online vertex. To our knowledge, this is the…
It is well-known that the Vertex Cover problem is in P on bipartite graphs, however; the computational complexity of the Partial Vertex Cover problem on bipartite graphs is open. In this paper, we first show that the Partial Vertex Cover problem is NP-hard on bipartite graphs. We then identify an interesting special case of bipartite graphs, for which the Partial Vertex Cover problem can be solved in polynomial-time. We also show that the set of acyclic bipartite graphs, i.e., forests, and the set of bipartite graph where the degree of each vertex is at most 3 fall into that special case. Ther…

In vertex-cut sparsification, given a graph $G=(V,E)$ with a terminal set $T\subseteq V$, we wish to construct a graph $G'=(V',E')$ with $T\subseteq V'$, such that for every two sets of terminals $A,B\subseteq T$, the size of a minimum $(A,B)$-vertex-cut in $G'$ is the same as in $G$. In the most basic setting, $G$ is unweighted and undirected, and we wish to bound the size of $G'$ by a function of $k=|T|$. Kratsch and Wahlström [JACM 2020] proved that every graph $G$ (possibly directed), admits a vertex-cut sparsifier $G'$ with $O(k^3)$ vertices, which can in fact be constructed in randomized…
We study the following vertex-weighted online bipartite matching problem: $G(U, V, E)$ is a bipartite graph. The vertices in $U$ have weights and are known ahead of time, while the vertices in $V$ arrive online in an arbitrary order and have to be matched upon arrival. The goal is to maximize the sum of weights of the matched vertices in $U$. When all the weights are equal, this reduces to the classic \emph{online bipartite matching} problem for which Karp, Vazirani and Vazirani gave an optimal $\left(1-\frac{1}{e}\right)$-competitive algorithm in their seminal work~\cite{KVV90}. Our main resu…
A permutation graph can be defined as an intersection graph of segments whose endpoints lie on two parallel lines $l_1$ and $l_2$, one on each. A bipartite permutation graph is a permutation graph which is bipartite. In this paper we study the parameterized complexity of the bipartite permutation vertex deletion problem, which asks, for a given n-vertex graph, whether we can remove at most k vertices to obtain a bipartite permutation graph. This problem is NP-complete by the classical result of Lewis and Yannakakis. We analyze the structure of the so-called almost bipartite permutation graphs …
The Adwords and Online Bipartite Matching problems have enjoyed a renewed attention over the past decade due to their connection to Internet advertising. Our community has contributed, among other things, new models (notably stochastic) and extensions to the classical formulations to address the issues that arise from practical needs. In this paper, we propose a new generalization based on matroids and show that many of the previous results extend to this more general setting. Because of the rich structures and expressive power of matroids, our new setting is potentially of interest both in th…
We consider the maximum vertex-weighted matching problem (MVM), in which non-negative weights are assigned to the vertices of a graph, the weight of a matching is the sum of the weights of the matched vertices, and we are required to compute a matching of maximum weight. We describe an exact algorithm for MVM with $O(|V|\, |E|)$ time complexity, and then we design a $2/3$-approximation algorithm for MVM on bipartite graphs by restricting the length of augmenting paths to at most three. The latter algorithm has time complexity $O(|E| + |V| \log |V|)$. The approximation algorithm solves two MVM …
In this paper, we consider the online vertex-weighted bipartite matching problem in the random arrival model. We consider the generalization of the RANKING algorithm for this problem introduced by Huang, Tang, Wu, and Zhang (TALG 2019), who show that their algorithm has a competitive ratio of 0.6534. We show that assumptions in their analysis can be weakened, allowing us to replace their derivation of a crucial function $g$ on the unit square with a linear program that computes the values of a best possible $g$ under these assumptions on a discretized unit square. We show that the discretizati…
We give efficient distributed algorithms for the minimum vertex cover problem in bipartite graphs in the CONGEST model. From Kőnig's theorem, it is well known that in bipartite graphs the size of a minimum vertex cover is equal to the size of a maximum matching. We first show that together with an existing $O(n\log n)$-round algorithm for computing a maximum matching, the constructive proof of Kőnig's theorem directly leads to a deterministic $O(n\log n)$-round CONGEST algorithm for computing a minimum vertex cover. We then show that by adapting the construction, we can also convert an \emph{a…
In this paper, we explicitly study the online vertex cover problem, which is a natural generalization of the well-studied ski-rental problem. In the online vertex cover problem, we are required to maintain a monotone vertex cover in a graph whose vertices arrive online. When a vertex arrives, all its incident edges to previously arrived vertices are revealed to the algorithm. For bipartite graphs with the left vertices offline (i.e. all of the left vertices arrive first before any right vertex), there are algorithms achieving the optimal competitive ratio of $\frac{1}{1-1/e}\approx 1.582$. Our…
An $(f,g)$-semi-matching in a bipartite graph $G=(U \cup V,E)$ is a set of edges $M \subseteq E$ such that each vertex $u\in U$ is incident with at most $f(u)$ edges of $M$, and each vertex $v\in V$ is incident with at most $g(v)$ edges of $M$. In this paper we give an algorithm that for a graph with $n$ vertices and $m$ edges, $n\le m$, constructs a maximum $(f,g)$-semi-matching in running time $O(m\cdot \min (\sqrt{\sum_{u\in U}f(u)}, \sqrt{\sum_{v\in V}g(v)}))$. Using the reduction of [5], our result on maximum $(f,g)$-semi-matching problem directly implies an algorithm for the optimal semi…
In the Minimum k-Union problem (MkU) we are given a set system with n sets and are asked to select k sets in order to minimize the size of their union. Despite being a very natural problem, it has received surprisingly little attention: the only known approximation algorithm is an $O(\sqrt{n})$-approximation due to [Chlamtáč et al APPROX '16]. This problem can also be viewed as the bipartite version of the Small Set Vertex Expansion problem (SSVE), which we call the Small Set Bipartite Vertex Expansion problem (SSBVE). SSVE, in which we are asked to find a set of k nodes to minimize their vert…
We study the average performance of online greedy matching algorithms on $G(n,n,p)$, the random bipartite graph with $n$ vertices on each side and edges occurring independently with probability $p=p(n)$. In the online model, vertices on one side of the graph are given up front while vertices on the other side arrive sequentially; when a vertex arrives its edges are revealed and it must be immediately matched or dropped. We begin by analyzing the \textsc{oblivious} algorithm, which tries to match each arriving vertex to a random neighbor, even if the neighbor has already been matched. The algor…
We study the oblivious matching problem, which aims at finding a maximum matching on a graph with unknown edge set. Any algorithm for the problem specifies an ordering of the vertex pairs. The matching is then produced by probing the pairs following the ordering, and including a pair if both of them are unmatched and there exists an edge between them. The unweighted (Chan et al. (SICOMP 2018)) and the vertex-weighted (Chan et al. (TALG 2018)) versions of the problem are well studied. In this paper, we consider the edge-weighted oblivious matching problem on bipartite graphs, which generalizes …
In a bounded max-coloring of a vertex/edge weighted graph, each color class is of cardinality at most $b$ and of weight equal to the weight of the heaviest vertex/edge in this class. The bounded max-vertex/edge-coloring problems ask for such a coloring minimizing the sum of all color classes' weights. In this paper we present complexity results and approximation algorithms for those problems on general graphs, bipartite graphs and trees. We first show that both problems are polynomial for trees, when the number of colors is fixed, and $H_b$ approximable for general graphs, when the bound $b$ i…
In the weighted partial vertex cover problem (WPVC), we are given a graph $G=(V,E)$, cost function $c:V\rightarrow N$, profit function $p:E\rightarrow N$, and positive integers $R$ and $L$. The goal is to check whether there is a subset $V'\subseteq V$ of cost at most $R$, such that the total profit of edges covered by $V'$ is at least $L$. In this paper we study the fixed-parameter tractability of WPVC in bipartite graphs (WPVCB). By extending the methods of Amini et al., we show that WPVCB is FPT with respect to $R$ if $c\equiv 1$. On the negative side, it is $W[1]$-hard for arbitrary $c$, e…
König's theorem states that on bipartite graphs the size of a maximum matching equals the size of a minimum vertex cover. It is known from prior work that for every ε> 0 there exists a constant-time distributed algorithm that finds a (1+ε)-approximation of a maximum matching on 2-coloured graphs of bounded degree. In this work, we show---somewhat surprisingly---that no sublogarithmic-time approximation scheme exists for the dual problem: there is a constant δ> 0 so that no randomised distributed algorithm with running time o(\log n) can find a (1+δ)-approximation of a minimum vertex cover on 2…
The Near-Bipartiteness problem is that of deciding whether or not the vertices of a graph can be partitioned into sets $A$ and $B$, where $A$ is an independent set and $B$ induces a forest. The set $A$ in such a partition is said to be an independent feedback vertex set. Yang and Yuan proved that Near-Bipartiteness is polynomial-time solvable for graphs of diameter 2 and NP-complete for graphs of diameter 4. We show that Near-Bipartiteness is NP-complete for graphs of diameter 3, resolving their open problem. We also generalise their result for diameter 2 by proving that even the problem of co…
We study space and time efficient quantum algorithms for two graph problems -- deciding whether an $n$-vertex graph is a forest, and whether it is bipartite. Via a reduction to the s-t connectivity problem, we describe quantum algorithms for deciding both properties in $\tilde{O}(n^{3/2})$ time and using $O(\log n)$ classical and quantum bits of storage in the adjacency matrix model. We then present quantum algorithms for deciding the two properties in the adjacency array model, which run in time $\tilde{O}(n\sqrt{d_m})$ and also require $O(\log n)$ space, where $d_m$ is the maximum degree of …
We prove that given a bipartite graph G with vertex set V and an integer k, deciding whether there exists a subset of V of size k hitting all maximal independent sets of G is complete for the class Sigma_2^P.
The NP-hard general factor problem asks, given a graph and for each vertex a list of integers, whether the graph has a spanning subgraph where each vertex has a degree that belongs to its assigned list. The problem remains NP-hard even if the given graph is bipartite with partition U+V, and each vertex in U is assigned the list {1}; this subproblem appears in the context of constraint programming as the consistency problem for the extended global cardinality constraint. We show that this subproblem is fixed-parameter tractable when parameterized by the size of the second partite set V. More ge…
Let $d$-claw (or $d$-star) stand for $K_{1,d}$, the complete bipartite graph with 1 and $d\ge 1$ vertices on each part. The $d$-claw vertex deletion problem, $d$-CLAW-VD, asks for a given graph $G$ and an integer $k$ if one can delete at most $k$ vertices from $G$ such that the resulting graph has no $d$-claw as an induced subgraph. Thus, 1-CLAW-VD and 2-CLAW-VD are just the famous VERTEX COVER problem and the CLUSTER VERTEX DELETION problem, respectively. In this paper, we strengthen a hardness result in [M. Yannakakis, Node-Deletion Problems on Bipartite Graphs, SIAM J. Comput. (1981)], by s…
We consider Bayesian online selection problem of a matching in bipartite graphs, i.e., online weighted matching problem with edge arrivals where online algorithm knows distributions of weights, that corresponds to the intersection of two matroids in [Kleinberg and Wienberg STOC 12] model. We consider a simple class of non adaptive vertex-additive policies that assign static prices to all vertices in the graph and accept each edge only if its weight exceeds the sum of the prices of the edge's endpoints. We show existence of a vertex-additive policy with the expected payoff of at least one third…
