By definition transients are sudden events, some, like supernovae, are catastrophic, while others might be due to recurrent phenomena. The aim of studying transients is to reveal the physical conditions causing them, in this sense ideal targets for monitoring are transients in binary systems. In these systems the physical process responsible for the transient depends directly or indirectly on the interaction of the two components of the system. Here I report on transients in stellar binary systems at two extremes of stellar evolution: a T~Tauri system formed by two young low mass stellar objects, and X-ray binary systems formed by a star and a neutron star or a black hole, i.e., end points in the life of massive stars. VLBI observations of the young binary system V773 Tau A resolve the binary separation and can be overlapped with the optical frame. Consecutive VLBI observations showing the evolution of the radio emission with respect to the two stellar objects are an unvaluable tool for a better understanding of the magnetic field topology of T Tauri stars. The characteristics of radio jets in X-ray binaries are summarised and compared with those of the radio emission of the gamma-ray binary LS I +61303. Timing analysis of radio and Fermi-LAT observations provide constraints for theoretical models that can be tested by VLBI observations.
The angular, spectral and temporal features of the highest energy protons and accompanying them secondary neutrinos and synchrotron gamma-rays propagating through the intergalactic magnetic and radiation fields are studied using the analytical solutions of the Boltzmann transport equation obtained in the limit of the small-angle and continuous-energy-loss approximation.

Detecting and characterizing the anisotropy pattern of the arrival directions of the highest energy cosmic rays are crucial steps towards the identification of their sources. We discuss a possible distortion of the cosmic ray flux induced by the anisotropic and inhomogeneous distribution of extragalactic magnetic fields in cases where sources of ultrahigh energy cosmic rays are rare transient phenomena, such as gamma-ray bursts and/or newly born magnetars. This distortion does not involve an angular deflection but the modulation of the flux related to the probability of seeing the source on an…
The low mass X-ray binary Aquila X-1 is one of the most active neutron star X-ray transients. Despite it has a relatively bright quiescent optical counterpart, the detection of its companion has been hampered by the presence of a nearby interloper star. Using the infrared integral field spectrograph SINFONI on the VLT-8.2m telescope, we unambiguously single out Aquila X-1 from the interloper. Phase-resolved near infrared spectroscopy reveals absorption features from a K4 +- 2 companion star moving at a projected velocity of K_2= 136 +- 4 km/s. We here present the first dynamical solution and a…
We show that for supergiants, net angular momentum is not a necessary condition for forming accretion discs during core-collapse. Even absent net rotation, convective motions in the outer parts of supergiants generate mean horizontal flows at a given radius with velocities of order 1 km/s; the direction of the mean flow will vary as a function of height through the convection zone. We confirm these analytic estimates using Cartesian Boussinesq convection simulations. These mean horizontal flows lead to a random angular momentum in supergiant convection zones that exceeds that of the last stabl…
X-ray binaries have been an important key in understanding the jet-disc symbiosis in accreting black holes on all mass scales, from stellar-mass to supermassive black holes. SS433 was the first Galactic XRB that has been extensively studied in the radio regime. The radio properties, including the highest angular resolution data can now be better understood in the framework for accretion disc state transitions that is observed in microquasars (black hole X-ray binary systems). SS433 remains unique in various ways to date, and there is still much to learn about black hole accretion phenomena. In…
The $γ$-ray pulsar binary system PSR B1259-63 flares in GeV after each periastron. The origin of those flares is still under debate. Recently, [2017ApJ...844..114Y] proposed a mechanism that might explain the GeV flares. In that model, a transient accretion disc is expected to be formed from the matter which was gravity-captured by the neutron star from the main sequence companion's circumstellar disc. The transient accretion disc exerts a spin down torque on the neutron star (propeller effect), which might be traceable via pulsar timing observation of PSR B1259-63. In this paper, we phenomeno…
We performed a systematic analysis of all INTEGRAL observations from 2003 to 2009 of 14 Supergiant Fast X-ray Transients (SFXTs), implying a net exposure time of about 30Ms. For each source we obtained lightcurves and spectra (3-100keV), discovering several new outbursts. We discuss the X-ray behaviour of SFXTs emerging from our analysis in the framework of the clumpy wind accretion mechanism we proposed (Ducci et al. 2009). We discuss the effect of X-ray photoionization on accretion in close binary systems like IGRJ16479-4514 and IGRJ17544-2619. We show that, because of X-ray photoionization,…
We use time resolved spectroscopy of thermonuclear X-ray bursts observed from SAX J1748.9-2021 to infer the mass and the radius of the neutron star in the binary. Four X-ray bursts observed from the source with RXTE enable us to measure the angular size and the Eddington limit on the neutron star surface. Combined with a distance measurement to the globular cluster NGC 6440, in which SAX J1748.9-2021 resides, we obtain two solutions for the neutron star radius and mass, R = 8.18 +/- 1.62 km and M = 1.78 +/- 0.3 M_\sun or R = 10.93 +/- 2.09 km and M = 1.33 +/- 0.33 M_\sun.
The ANTARES telescope has the opportunity to detect transient neutrino sources, such as gamma-ray bursts, core-collapse supernovae, flares of active nuclei... To enhance the sensitivity to these sources, we have developed a new detection method based on the optical follow-up of "golden" neutrino events such as neutrino doublets coincident in time and space or single neutrinos of very high energy. The ANTARES Collaboration has therefore implemented a very fast on-line reconstruction with a good angular resolution. These characteristics allow to trigger an optical telescope network; since Februa…
Important observational results have been recently reported on the angular distributions of cosmic rays at all energies, calling into question the perception of cosmic rays a decade ago. These results together with their in-progress interpretations are summarised in this review paper, covering both large-scale and small-scale anisotropies from TeV energies to the highest ones. While the magnetic field in the Galaxy has long been considered as an external data imprinting a quasi-random walk to particles and thus shaping the angular distributions of Galactic cosmic rays through the induced avera…
I review the basics of the disc instability model (DIM) for dwarf novae and soft-X-ray transients and its most recent developments, as well as the current limitations of the model, focusing on the dwarf nova case. Although the DIM uses the Shakura-Sunyaev prescription for angular momentum transport, which we know now to be at best inaccurate, it is surprisingly efficient in reproducing the outbursts of dwarf novae and soft X-ray transients, provided that some ingredients, such as irradiation of the accretion disc and of the donor star, mass transfer variations, truncation of the inner disc, et…
The bulk of observed ultrahigh energy cosmic rays could be light or heavier elements, and originate from an either steady or transient population of sources. This leaves us with four general categories of sources. Energetic requirements set a lower limit on single source luminosities, while the distribution of particle arrival directions in the sky sets a lower limit on the source number density. The latter constraint depends on the angular smearing in the skymap due to the magnetic deflections of the charged particles during their propagation from the source to the Earth. We contrast these li…
The Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA) is the next generation high-energy gamma-ray observatory. It will improve the sensitivity of current instruments up to an order of magnitude, while providing energy coverage for photons from 20 GeV to at least 300 TeV to reach high redshifts and extreme accelerators and will give access to the shortest time-scale phenomena. CTA is thus a uniquely powerful instrument for the exploration of the violent and variable universe. The ability to probe short timescales at the highest energies will allow CTA to explore the connection between accretion and ejection phe…
We present an X-ray spectral and timing analysis of two $NuSTAR$ observations of the transient Be X-ray binary SAX J2103.5+4545 during its April 2016 outburst, which was characterized by the highest flux since $NuSTAR$'s launch. These observations provide detailed hard X-ray spectra of this source during its bright precursor flare and subsequent fainter regular outburst for the first time. In this work, we model the phase-averaged spectra for these observations with a negative and positive power law with an exponential cut-off (NPEX) model and compare the pulse profiles at different flux state…
The transient X-ray source CXOM31 004205.77+411330.43 exhibited several outbursts during our long-term monitoring campaign of ~monthly observations of the M31 center with Chandra. However, the decay profile appears to be unlike those observed from Galactic transients. We followed up the 2011 outburst with two ~B band HST/ACS observations, one in outburst and the other in quiescence, and used difference imaging to search for a counterpart; this would be dominated by re-processed X-ray emission from the disk. We found a counterpart with B = 28.21+/-0.16. An XMM-Newton observation from a previous…
The Galactic center has some of the highest stellar densities in the Galaxy and a range of interstellar scattering properties that may aid in the detection of new radio-selected transient events. Here we describe a search for radio transients in the Galactic center using over 200 hours of archival data from the Very Large Array (VLA) at 5 and 8.4 GHz. Every observation of SgrA* from 1985$-$2005 has been searched using an automated processing and detection pipeline sensitive to transients with timescales between 30 seconds and five minutes with a typical detection threshold of $\sim$100 mJy. Ei…
KS 1741-293 is a transient neutron star low-mass X-ray binary that is located at an angular distance of ~20' from the Galactic center. We map out the historic activity of the source since its discovery in 1989, characterize its most recent X-ray outbursts observed with Swift (2007, 2008, 2010, and 2011), and discuss its quiescent X-ray properties using archival Chandra data. KS 1741-293 is frequently active, exhibiting outbursts that typically reach a 2-10 keV luminosity of Lx~1E36 (D/6.2 kpc)^2 erg/s and last for several weeks-months. However, Swift also captured a very short and weak accreti…
We study how the properties of transient sources of ultra-high-energy cosmic rays (UHECRs) can be accessed by exploiting UHECR experiments, taking into account the propagation of UHECRs in magnetic structures which the sources are embedded in, i.e., clusters of galaxies and filamentary structures. Adopting simplified analytical models, we demonstrate that the structured extragalactic magnetic fields (EGMFs) play crucial roles in unveiling the properties of the transient sources. These EGMFs unavoidably cause significant delay in the arrival time of UHECRs as well as the Galactic magnetic field…
The collapse of a massive star with low angular momentum content is commonly argued to result in the formation of a black hole without an accompanying bright transient. Our goal in this Letter is to understand the flow in and around a newly-formed black hole, involving accretion and rotation, via general relativistic hydrodynamics simulations aimed at studying the conditions under which infalling material can accrete without forming a centrifugally supported structure and, as a result, generate no effective feedback. If the feedback from the black hole is, on the other hand, significant, the c…
We report the discovery of a large amplitude (factor of $\sim$100) X-ray transient (IC 10 X-2, CXOU J002020.99+591758.6) in the nearby dwarf starburst galaxy IC10 during our Chandra monitoring project. Based on the X-ray timing and spectral properties, and an optical counterpart observed with Gemini, the system is a high mass X-ray binary (HMXB) consisting of a luminous blue supergiant and a neutron star (NS). The highest measured luminosity of the source was 1.8$\times$10$^{37}$ erg s$^{-1}$ during an outburst in 2003. Observations before, during and after a second outburst in 2010 constrain …
A thin gaseous disc with an almost keplerian angular velocity profile, bounded by a free surface and rotating around point-mass gravitating object is nearly spectrally stable. Despite that the substantial transient growth of linear perturbations measured by the evolution of their acoustic energy is possible. This fact is demonstrated for the simple model of a non-viscous polytropic thin disc of a finite radial size where the small adiabatic perturbations are considered as a linear combination of neutral modes with a corotational radius located beyond the outer boundary of the flow.
We present the radio and X-ray monitoring campaign of the 2019/2020 outburst of MAXI J1348-630, a new black hole X-ray binary (XRB) discovered in 2019 January. We observed MAXI J1348-630 for $\sim$14 months in the radio band with MeerKAT and the Australia Telescope Compact Array (ATCA), and in the X-rays with MAXI and Swift/XRT. Throughout the outburst we detected and tracked the evolution of the compact and transient jets. Following the main outburst, the system underwent at least 4 hard-state-only re-flares, during which compact jets were again detected. For the major outburst, we observed t…
We report the X-ray data analysis of two transient ultraluminous X-ray sources (ULXs, hereafter X1 and X2) located in the nearby galaxy NGC 7090. While they were not detected in the 2004 XMM-Newton and 2005 Chandra observations, their 0.3-10 keV X-ray luminosities reached $>3\times10^{39}\,\mathrm{erg\,s^{-1}}$ in later XMM-Newton or Swift observations, showing increases in flux by a factor of $>80$ and $>300$ for X1 and X2, respectively. X1 showed indications of spectral variability: at the highest luminosity, its X-ray spectra can be fitted with a powerlaw ($Γ=1.55\pm0.15$), or a multicolour…

Multi-messenger observations of transient astrophysical sources have the potential to characterize the highest energy accelerators and the most extreme environments in the Universe. Detection of neutrinos, in particular tau neutrinos generated by neutrino oscillations in transit from their sources to Earth, is possible for neutrino energies above 10 PeV using optical Cherenkov detectors imaging upward-moving extensive air showers (EAS). These EAS are produced from Earth interacting tau neutrinos leading to tau leptons that subsequently decay in the atmosphere. We compare neutrino detection sen…
We report results of the INTEGRAL Target of Opportunity observations of the transient X-ray burster XTE J1810-189. The observations were performed on April 3--6, 2008, soon after the discovery of the source and near the peak of its outburst. That time the source had a flux of about 50 mCrab and exhibited a hard Comptonized X-ray spectrum extending well above 100 keV. Being approximated by a power law with an exponetial cut-off in the broad 3--100 keV energy band it gave the average photon index $Γ\simeq 1.6$ and $kT_{cutoff}\simeq 67$ keV. We found only slight indications for changes in the in…
We have analyzed in a systematic way about nine years of INTEGRAL data (17-100 keV) focusing on Supergiant Fast X-ray Transients (SFXTs) and three classical High Mass X-ray Binaries (HMXBs). Our approach has been twofold: image based analysis, sampled over a ~ks time frame to investigate the long-term properties of the sources, and lightcurve based analysis, sampled over a 100s time frame to seize the fast variability of each source during its ~ks activity. We find that while the prototypical SFXTs (IGR J17544-2619, XTE J1739-302 and SAX J1818.6-1703) are among the sources with the lowest ~ks …
We propose a new type of electromagnetic transients associated with the birth of binary black holes (BBHs), which may lead to merger events accompanied by gravitational waves in $\sim0.1-1$ Gyr. We consider the newborn BBHs formed through the evolution of isolated massive stellar binaries. For a close massive binary, consisting of a primary black hole (BH) and a secondary Wolf-Rayet (WR) star that are orbiting around each other, the spin period of the WR star can be tidally synchronized to its orbital period. Then, the angular momentum of the outer material of the WR star is large enough to fo…
During the core collapse of massive stars that do not undergo a canonical energetic explosion, some of the hydrogen envelope of a red supergiant (RSG) progenitor may infall onto the newborn black hole (BH). Within the Athena++ framework, we perform three-dimensional, hydrodynamical simulations of idealized models of supergiant convection and collapse in order to assess whether the infall of the convective envelope can give rise to rotationally-supported material, even if the star has zero angular momentum overall. Our dimensionless, polytropic models are applicable to the optically-thick hydro…

Gamma-ray astronomy is a branch whose potential has not yet been fully exploited. The observations of elemental and isotopic abundances in supernova (SN) explosions are key probes not only of the stellar structure and evolution but also for understanding the physics that makes Type-Ia SNe as standard candles for the study of the Universe expansion properties. In spite of its crucial role, nuclear astrophysics remains a poorly explored field mainly for the typical emission lines intensity which are vanishing small and requires very high sensitivities of the telescopes. Furthermore, in spite tha…
We analyze the correlation of the positions of gamma-ray sources in the Fermi Large Area Telescope First Source Catalog (1FGL) and the First LAT Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) Catalog (1LAC) with the arrival directions of ultra-high-energy cosmic rays (UHECRs) observed with the Pierre Auger Observatory, in order to investigate the origin of UHECRs. We find that Galactic sources and blazars identified in the 1FGL are not significantly correlated with UHECRs, while the 1LAC sources display a mild correlation (2.6 sigma level) on a ~2.4 degree angular scale. When selecting only the 1LAC AGNs closer…
We show that the period clustering of anomalous X-ray pulsars (AXPs) and soft gamma-ray repeaters (SGRs), their X-ray luminosities, ages and statistics can be explained with fallback disks with large initial specific angular momentum. The disk evolution models are developed by comparison to self-similar analytical models. The initial disk mass and angular momentum set the viscous timescale. An efficient torque, with (1 - w^2) dependence on the fastness parameter w leads to period clustering in the observed AXP-SGR period range under a wide range of initial conditions. The timescale t_0 for the…
The propagation trajectories of the highest energy cosmic rays (HECRs) are deflected by not only intergalactic magnetic field but also Galactic magnetic field (GMF). These magnetic fields can weaken the positive correlation between the arrival directions of HECRs and the positions of their sources. In order to explore the effect of GMF on the expected correlation, we simulate the arrival distribution of protons with the energy above $6 \times 10^{19}$ eV taking several GMF models into account, and then test the correlation between the protons and their sources assumed in the simulation. The de…
The millimeter transient sky is largely unexplored, with measurements limited to follow-up of objects detected at other wavelengths. High-angular-resolution telescopes designed for measurement of the cosmic microwave background offer the possibility to discover new, unknown transient sources in this band, particularly the afterglows of unobserved gamma-ray bursts. Here we use the 10-meter millimeter-wave South Pole Telescope, designed for the primary purpose of observing the cosmic microwave background at arcminute and larger angular scales, to conduct a search for such objects. During the 201…
The Galactic Center (GC) presents one of the highest stellar densities in our Galaxy, making its surroundings an environment potentially rich in radio transients, such as pulsars and different kinds of flaring activity. In this paper, we present the first study of transient activity in the region of the GC based on Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter (mm/submm) Array (ALMA) continuum observations at 230 GHz. This search is based on a new self-calibration algorithm, especially designed for variability detection in the GC field. Using this method, we have performed a search of radio transient…
A millisecond pulsar is a neutron star that has been substantially spun up by accretion from a binary companion. A previously unrecognized factor governing the spin evolution of such pulsars is the crucial effect of non-steady or transient accretion. We numerically compute the evolution of accreting neutron stars through a series of outburst and quiescent phases considering the drastic variation of the accretion rate and the standard disk-magnetosphere interaction. We find that, for the same long-term average accretion rate, X-ray transients can spin up pulsars to rates several times higher th…
We present a multifrequency study of the transient $γ$-ray source 4FGL J1544.3-0649, a blazar that exhibited a remarkable behaviour raising from the state of an anonymous mid-intensity radio source, never detected at high energies, to that of one of the brightest extreme blazars in the X-ray and $γ$-ray sky. Our analysis shows that the averaged $γ$-ray spectrum is well described by a powerlaw with a photon index of $1.87\pm0.04$, while the flux above 100 MeV is $(8.0\pm0.9)\times10^{-9}\:{\rm photon\: cm^{-2}\: s^{-1}}$, which increases during the active state of the source. The X-ray flux and…
EXO 1745-248 is a transient neutron-star low-mass X-ray binary that resides in the globular cluster Terzan 5. We studied the transient during its quiescent state using 18 Chandra observations of the cluster acquired between 2003 and 2016. We found an extremely variable source, with a luminosity variation in the 0.5-10 keV energy range of $\sim3$ orders of magnitude (between $3\times10^{31}$ erg s$^{-1}$ and $2\times10^{34}$ erg s$^{-1}$) on timescales from years down to only a few days. Using an absorbed power-law model to fit its quiescent spectra, we obtained a typical photon index of $\sim1…
Helium accretion induced explosions in CO white dwarfs (WDs) are considered promising candidates for a number of observed types of stellar transients, including supernovae (SNe) of Type Ia and Type Iax. However, a clear favorite outcome has not yet emerged. We explore the conditions of helium ignition in the white dwarf and the final fates of helium star-WD binaries as function of their initial orbital periods and component masses. We compute 274 model binary systems with the Binary Evolution Code (BEC), where both components are fully resolved. Stellar and orbital evolution is computed simult…
We report Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope (GMRT) HI 21cm imaging of CGCG 137-068, the host galaxy of the fast-evolving luminous transient (FELT) AT2018cow. This is the first study of the gas properties of a FELT host galaxy. We obtain a total HI mass of $(6.6 \pm 0.9) \times 10^8$ M$_\odot$ for the host galaxy, which implies an atomic gas depletion time of $3$ Gyr and a gas-to-stellar mass ratio of $0.47$, consistent with values in normal star-forming dwarf galaxies. At spatial resolutions of $\geq 6$ kpc, the HI of CGCG 137-068 appears to be distributed in a disk, in mostly regular rotation. …

Highest energy neutrino events (contained) in cubic km ICECUBE detector resulted in last three years to be as many as $37-2=35$ signals (two of those having been recently discharged); these tens-hundred TeV (32 energetic events) up to rarest (only 3) PeV cascade showers, proved to have an extraterrestrial origin. The UHE neutrino flavor transition from a $ν_μ$ atmospheric dominance (over $ν_{e}$ showers at TeV energy), toward a higher energy shower cascade ($ν_{e}$, $ν_τ$) events at few tens TeV up to PeV energy is a hint of such a fast extraterrestrial injection. The majority (28 out of 35) o…
