We report collective dark states controlled transmission in metal-dielectric-metal waveguides with a stub coupled to two twin cavities, namely, plasmonic waveguide-stub-dimer systems. In absence of one individual cavity in the dimer, plasmon induced transparency (PIT) is possible when the cavity and the stub have the same resonance frequency. However, it is shown that the hybridized modes in the dimer collectively generate two dark states which make the stub-dimer "invisible" to the straight waveguide, splitting the original PIT peak into two in the transmission spectrum. Simultaneously, the original PIT peak becomes a dip due to dark state interaction, yielding anti-PIT-like modulation of the transmission. With full-wave electromagnetic simulation, we demonstrate that this transition is controlled by the dimer-stub separation and the dimer-stub relative position. All results are analytically described by the temporal coupled mode theory. Our results may be useful in designing densely integrated optical circuits, and in optical sensing and switching applications.
In this work, we compare the performance of plasmonic waveguide integrated stub resonators based on 2D metal-dielectric-metal and 3D slot waveguide (SWG) geometries. We show that scattering matrix theory can be extended to 3D devices, and by employing scattering matrix theory, we provide the guidelines for designing plasmonic 2D and 3D single-stub and double-stub resonators with a desired spectral response at the design wavelength. We provide transmission maps of 2D and 3D double-stub resonators versus stub lengths, and we specify the different regions on these maps that result in a minimum, a…
In this work, we focus on stub resonators embedded in plasmonic slot waveguides. The resonators have potential applications in optical interconnects and sensors. We fabricate the samples by electron beam lithography and lift-off. We use a scattering matrix based model to quantify the optical power output from the samples. We measure the properties of the resonators by coupling light in and out of the slot waveguides by optical antennas, making use of a cross-polarization based setup utilizing a supercontinuum source and a high numerical aperture objective lens operating in the telecom-waveleng…
We propose and theoretically verify an efficient mechanism of broadband coupling between incident light and on-chip dielectric slot waveguide by employing a tapered plasmonic nanoantenna. Nanoantenna receives free space radiation and couples it to a dielectric slot waveguide with the efficiency of up to 20% in a broad spectral range, having a small footprint as compared with the currently used narrowband dielectric grating couplers. We argue that the frequency selective properties of such nanoantennas also allow for using them as ultrasmall on-chip multiplexer/demultiplexer devices.
Surface plasmon polaritons enable light concentration within subwavelength regions, opening thereby new avenues for miniaturizing the device and strengthening light-matter interactions. Here we realize effective electro-optic modulation in low-loss plasmonic waveguides with the aid of graphene, and the devices are fully integrated in the silicon-on-insulator platform. By advantageously exploiting low-loss plasmonic slot-waveguide modes, which weakly leak into a substrate while feature strong fields within the two-layer-graphene covered slots in metal, we successfully achieve a tunability of 0.…
We demonstrate the use of amplitude- and phase-resolved near-field mapping for direct characterization of plasmonic slot waveguide mode propagation and excitation with nanocouplers in the telecom wavelength range. We measure mode's propagation length, effective index and field distribution and directly evaluate the relative coupling efficiencies for various couplers configurations. We report 26- and 15-fold improvements in the coupling efficiency with two serially connected dipole and modified bow-tie antennas, respectively, as compared to that of the short-circuited waveguide termination.
Plasmonic waveguides are a promising platform for integrated nanophotonic circuits and nanoscale quantum optics. Their use is however often hampered by the limited propagation length of the guided surface plasmon modes. A detailed understanding of the influence of the material quality and the waveguide geometry on the complex mode index is therefore crucial. In this letter, we present interferometric near-field measurements at telecommunication wavelength on plasmonic slot waveguides fabricated by focused ion beam milling in single- and poly-crystalline gold films. We observe a significantly b…
We theoretically investigate several types of plasmonic slot waveguides for enhancing the measured signal in Raman spectroscopy, which is a consequence of electric field and Purcell factor enhancements, as well as an increase in light-matter interaction volume and the Raman signal collection efficiency. An intuitive methodology is presented for calculating the accumulated Raman enhancement factor of an ensemble of molecules in waveguide sensing, which exploits an analytical photon Green function expansion in terms of the waveguide normal modes, and we combine this with a quantum optics formali…
We theoretically investigate the properties of crossing for two perpendicular subwavelength plasmonic slot waveguides. We show that, when encountering nano intersection, the crosstalk for the direct crossing is around 25%, almost same as throughout. In terms of symmetry considerations and resonant-tunnelling effect, we design compact cavity-based structures. Our results show that the crosstalk is eliminated and the throughput reaches the unity on resonance. Simulations results are in agreement with those from the coupled-model theory. When taking into account of the material loss, due to the u…
In this paper, we design a dielectric-to-plasmonic slot waveguide mode converter based on the hybrid silicon-gold taper. The effects of mode matching, the effective index matching, and the metallic absorption loss on the conversion efficiency are studied. Consequently, a metallic taper-funnel coupler with an overall length of 1.7um is designed to achieve a very high conversion efficiency of 93.3% at 1550 nm. The configuration limitations for not allowing this mode converter to achieve a 100% conversion efficiency are also investigated. Such a high-efficiency converter can provide practical rou…
Electromagnetic (EM) wave detection over a large spectrum has recently attracted significant amount of attention. Traditional electronic EM wave sensors use large metallic probes which distort the field to be measured and also have strict limitations on the detectable RF bandwidth. To address these problems, integrated photonic EM wave sensors have been developed to provide high sensitivity and broad bandwidth. Previously we demonstrated a compact, broadband, and sensitive integrated photonic EM wave sensor, consisting of an organic electro-optic (EO) polymer refilled silicon slot photonic cry…
We investigate mode converters for Si wire to plasmonic slot waveguides at 1550 nm telecom wavelength. The structures are based on a taper geometry. We provide optimal dimensions with more than 90% power transmission for a range of metal (Au) thicknesses between 30-250 nm. We provide details on how to differentiate between the total power and the power in the main mode of the plasmonic slot waveguide. Our analysis is based on the orthogonality of modes of the slot waveguide subject to a suitable inner product definition. Our results are relevant for lowering the insertion loss and the bit erro…
We present a full study of an improved nonlinear plasmonic slot waveguides (NPSWs) in which buffer linear dielectric layers are added between the Kerr type nonlinear dielectric core and the two semi-infinite metal regions. For TM polarized waves, the inclusion of these supplementary layers have two consequences. First, they reduced the overall losses. Secondly, they modify the types of solutions that propagate in the NPSWs adding new profiles enlarging the possibilities offered by these nonlinear waveguides. Our structure also provides longer propagation length due to the decrease of the losse…
We study nonlinear modes in subwavelength slot waveguides created by a nonlinear dielectric slab sandwiched between two metals. We present the dispersion diagrams of the families of nonlinear plasmonic modes and reveal that the symmetric mode undergoes the symmetry-breaking bifurcation with the energy primarily localized near one of the interfaces. We also find that the antisymmetric mode may split into two brunches giving birth to two families of nonlinear antisymmetric modes.
We study the main nonlinear solutions of plasmonic slot waveguides made from an anisotropic metamaterial core with a positive Kerr-type nonlinearity surrounded by two semi-infinite metal regions. First, we demonstrate that for a highly anisotropic diagonal elliptical core, the bifurcation threshold of the asymmetric mode is reduced from GW/m threshold for the isotropic case to 50 MW/m one indicating a strong enhancement of the spatial nonlinear effects, and that the slope of the dispersion curve of the asymmetric mode stays positive, at least near the bifurcation, suggesting a stable mode. Sec…
Optical isolator remains one of the main missing elements for photonic integrated circuits despite several decades of research. The best solutions up to now are based on transverse magneto-optical effect using either narrow-band resonators or high-gyrotropy magneto-optical materials with difficult integration on usual photonic platforms. We propose in this paper a radically new concept which enables performing broad-band non-reciprocal transmission even in the case of low-gyrotropy material. The principle explores the separation of back and forth light paths, due to the magneto-biplasmonic eff…
Recent experiments showed that unity-order index change in a transparent conducting oxide (TCO) can be achieved in a metal-oxide-semiconductor (MOS) structure by accumulation charge. However, the ultrathin (~5nm) accumulation layer and inherent absorption of TCOs impede the practical applications of this effect. Herein, we propose and explore a novel waveguide, namely "TCO-slot waveguide", which combines both the tunable property of a TCO and field enhancement of a slot waveguide. In particular, light absorption can be sharply enhanced when the slot dielectric constant is tuned close to zero. …
Graphene has extraordinary electro-optic properties and is therefore a promising candidate for monolithic photonic devices such as photodetectors. However, the integration of this atom-thin layer material with bulky photonic components usually results in a weak light-graphene interaction leading to large device lengths limiting electro-optic performance. In contrast, here we demonstrate a plasmonic slot graphene photodetector on silicon-on-insulator platform with high-responsivity given the 5 um-short device length. We observe that the maximum photocurrent, and hence the highest responsivity, …
Plasmonic, as a rapidly growing research field, provides new pathways to guide and modulate highly confined light in the microwave to the optical range of frequencies. We demonstrate a plasmonic slot waveguide, at the nanometer scale, based on high transition temperature superconductor BSCCO, to facilitates the manifestation of the chip-scale millimeter waves to terahertz integrated circuitry operating at cryogenic temperatures. We investigate the effect of geometrical parameters on the modal characteristics of the BSCCO plasmonic slot waveguide between 100 GHz and 500 GHz. In addition, we inv…
We investigate a plasmonic electro-optic modulator with an extinction ratio exceeding 1 dB/um by engineering the optical mode to be in-plane with the graphene layer, and show how lowering the operating temperature enables steeper switching. We show how cooling Graphene enables steeping thus improving dynamic energy consumption. Further, we show that multi-layer Graphene integrated with a plasmonic slot waveguide allows for in-plane electric field components, and 3-dB device lengths as short as several hundred nanometers only. Compact modulators approaching electronic length-scales pave a way f…
We study the optical properties associated to both the polariton gap and the Bragg gap in periodic resonator-waveguide coupled system, based on the temporal coupled mode theory and the transfer matrix method. By the complex band and the transmission spectrum, it is feasible to tune the interaction between multiple Bragg scattering and the local resonance, which may give rise to analogous phenomena of electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT). We further design a plasmonic slot waveguide side-coupled with local plasmonic resonator to demonstrate the EIT-like effects in the near-infared ban…
Two distinct models are developed to investigate the transverse magnetic stationary solutions propagating in one-dimensional anisotropic nonlinear plasmonic structures made from a nonlinear metamaterial core of Kerr-type embedded between two semi-infinite metal claddings. The first model is semi-analytical, in which we assumed that the anisotropic nonlinearity depends only on the transverse component of the electric field and that the nonlinear refractive index modification is small compared to the linear one. This method allows us to derive analytically the field profiles and the nonlinear di…
The subwavelength mode volumes of plasmonic filters are well matched to the small size of state-of-the-art active pixels (~ 1 μm) in CMOS image sensor arrays used in portable electronic devices. Typical plasmonic filters exhibit broad (> 100 nm) transmission bandwidths. Dramatically reducing the peak width of filter transmission spectra would allow for the realization of CMOS hyperspectral imaging arrays, which demand the FWHM of transmission peaks to be less than 30 nm. We find that the design of 5 layer metal-insulator-metal-insulator-metal structures gives rise to multi-mode interference ph…
We propose and analyze theoretically an approach for realizing a tunable optical phased-array antenna utilizing the properties of VO2 for electronic beam steering applications in the near-IR spectral range. The device is based on a 1D array of slot nano-antennas engraved in a thin Au film grown over VO2 layer. The tuning is obtained by inducing a temperature gradient over the device, which changes the refractive index of the VO2, and hence modifies the phase response of the elements comprising the array, by producing a thermal gradient within the underlying PCM layer. Using a 10-element array,…
Hybrid photonic-plasmonic cavities can be tailored to display high Q-factors and extremely small mode volumes simultaneously, which results in large values of the Purcell factor, FP. Amongst the different hybrid configurations, those based on a nanoparticle-on-a-mirror (NPoM) plasmonic cavity provide one of the lowest mode volumes, though so far their operation has been constrained to wavelengths below 1 μm. Here, we propose a hybrid configuration consisting of a silicon photonic crystal cavity with a slot at its center in which a gold nanoparticle is introduced. This hybrid system operates at…
We present two complementary models to study stationary nonlinear solutions in one-dimensional plasmonic slot waveguides made of a finite-thickness nonlinear dielectric core surrounded by metal regions. The considered nonlinearity is of focusing Kerr type. In the first model, it is assumed that the nonlinear term depends only on the transverse component of the electric field and that the nonlinear refractive index change is small compared to the linear part of the refractive index. This first model allows us to describe analytically the field profiles in the whole waveguide using Jacobi ellipt…
We use our vector Maxwell's nonlinear eigenmode solver to study the stationary solutions in 2D cross-section waveguides with Kerr nonlinear cores. This solver is based on the fixed power algorithm within the finite element method. First, studying nonlinear plasmonic slot waveguides, we demonstrate that, even in the low power regime, 1D studies may not provide accurate and meaningfull results compared to 2D ones. Second, we study at high powers the link between the nonlinear parameter $γ_{nl}$ and the change of the nonlinear propagation constant $Δβ$. Third, for a specific type of photonic crys…
Tunable optical material properties enable novel applications in both versatile metamaterials and photonic components including optical sources and modulators. Transparent conductive oxides (TCOs) are able to highly tune their optical properties with applied bias via altering their free carrier concentration and hence plasma dispersion. The TCO material indium tin oxide (ITO) exhibits unity-strong index changes, and epsilon-near-zero behavior. However, with such tuning the corresponding high optical losses, originating from the fundamental Kramers-Kronig relations, result in low cavity finesse…
We describe the results of the two methods we developed to calculate the stationary nonlinear solutions in one-dimensional plasmonic slot waveguides made of a finite-thickness nonlinear dielectric core surrounded by metal regions. These two methods are described in detail in the preceding article [Walasik et al., submitted]. For symmetric waveguides, we provide the nonlinear dispersion curves obtained using the two methods and compare them. We describe the well known low-order modes and the higher-modes that were not described before. All the modes are classified into two families: modes with …
Optical antennas made of low-loss dielectrics have several advantages over plasmonic antennas, including high radiative quantum efficiency, negligible heating and excellent photostability. However, due to weak spatial confinement, conventional dielectric antennas fail to offer light-matter interaction strengths on par with those of plasmonic antennas. We propose here an all-dielectric antenna configuration that can support strongly confined modes ($V\sim10^{-4}λ_{0}^3$) while maintaining unity antenna quantum efficiency. This configuration consists of a high-index pillar structure with a trans…
A CMOS-compatible plasmonic TE-pass polarizer capable of working in the O, E, S, C, L, and U bands is numerically analyzed. The device is based on an integrated hybrid plasmonic waveguide (HPW) with a segmented metal design. The segmented metal will avoid the propagation of the TM mode, confined in the slot of the HPW, while the TE fundamental mode will pass. The TE mode is not affected by the metal segmentation since it is confined in the core of the HPW. The concept of the segmented metal can be exploited in a plasmonic circuit with HPWs as the connecting waveguides between parts of the circ…
