Using wide field narrow-band surveys, we provide a new measurement of the $z=6.6$ Lyman-$α$ Emitter (LAE) luminosity function (LF), which constraints the bright end for the first time. We use a combination of archival narrow-band NB921 data in UDS and new NB921 measurements in SA22 and COSMOS/UltraVISTA, all observed with the Subaru telescope, with a total area of $\sim 5$ deg$^2$. We exclude lower redshift interlopers by using broad-band optical and near-infrared photometry and also exclude three supernovae with data split over multiple epochs. Combining the UDS and COSMOS samples we find no evolution of the bright end of the Ly$α$ LF between $z=5.7$ and $6.6$, which is supported by spectroscopic follow-up, and conclude that sources with \emph{Himiko}-like luminosity are not as rare as previously thought, with number densities of $\sim 1.5\times10^{-5}$ Mpc$^{-3}$. Combined with our wide-field SA22 measurements, our results indicate a non-Schechter-like bright end of the LF at $z=6.6$ and a different evolution of \emph{observed} faint and bright LAEs. This differential evolution is also seen in the spectroscopic follow-up of UV selected galaxies and is now also confirmed for Ly$α$ emitters, and we argue that it may be an effect of re-ionisation. Using a toy-model, we show that such differential evolution of the LF is expected, since brighter sources are able to ionise their surroundings earlier, such that Ly$α$ photons are able to escape. Our targets are excellent candidates for detailed follow-up studies and provide the possibility to give a unique view on the earliest stages in the formation of galaxies and re-ionisation process.
Faint Lyman-$α$ (Ly$α$) emitters become increasingly rarer towards the re-ionisation epoch (z~6-7). However, observations from a very large (~5deg$^2$) Ly$α$ survey at z=6.6 (Matthee et al. 2015) show that this is not the case for the most luminous emitters. Here we present follow-up observations of the two most luminous z~6.6 Ly$α$ candidates in the COSMOS field: `MASOSA' and `CR7'. We used X-SHOOTER, SINFONI and FORS2 (VLT), and DEIMOS (Keck), to confirm both candidates beyond any doubt. We find redshifts of z=6.541 and z=6.604 for MASOSA and CR7, respectively. MASOSA has a strong detection …
CR7 is the brightest $z=6.6 \, {\rm Ly}α$ emitter (LAE) known to date, and spectroscopic follow-up by Sobral et al. (2015) suggests that CR7 might host Population (Pop) III stars. We examine this interpretation using cosmological hydrodynamical simulations. Several simulated galaxies show the same "Pop III wave" pattern observed in CR7. However, to reproduce the extreme CR7 ${\rm Ly}α$/HeII1640 line luminosities ($L_{\rm α/He II}$) a top-heavy IMF and a massive ($>10^{7}{\rm M}_{\odot}$) PopIII burst with age $<2$ Myr are required. Assuming that the observed properties of ${\rm Ly}α$ and HeII …
Deep narrow-band surveys have revealed a large population of faint Lyman-alpha (Lya) emitters (LAEs) in the distant Universe, but relatively little is known about the most luminous sources ($L_{Lyα}>10^{42.7}$ erg/s; $L_{Lyα}>L^*_{Lyα}$). Here we present the spectroscopic follow-up of 21 luminous LAEs at z~2-3 found with panoramic narrow-band surveys over five independent extragalactic fields (~4x10$^6$ Mpc$^{3}$ surveyed at z~2.2 and z~3.1). We use WHT/ISIS, Keck/DEIMOS and VLT/X-SHOOTER to study these sources using high ionisation UV lines. Luminous LAEs at z~2-3 have blue UV slopes ($β=-2.0…
We present a spectroscopic survey of high-redshift, luminous galaxies over four square degrees on the sky, aiming to build a large and homogeneous sample of Ly$α$ emitters (LAEs) at $z\approx5.7$ and 6.5, and Lyman-break galaxies (LBGs) at $5.5<z<6.8$. The fields that we choose to observe are well-studied, such as SXDS and COSMOS. They have deep optical imaging data in a series of broad and narrow bands, allowing efficient selection of galaxy candidates. Spectroscopic observations are being carried out using the multi-object spectrograph M2FS on the Magellan Clay telescope. M2FS is efficient t…
We discuss the rest-frame ultraviolet emission line spectra of a large (~100) sample of low luminosity redshift z~3.1 Lyman alpha emitters (LAEs) drawn from a Subaru imaging survey in the SSA22 survey field. Our earlier work based on smaller samples indicated that such sources have high [OIII]/[OII] line ratios possibly arising from a hard ionising spectrum that may be typical of similar sources in the reionisation era. With optical spectra secured from VLT/VIMOS, we re-examine the nature of the ionising radiation in a larger sample using the strength of the high ionisation diagnostic emission…
The Ly-alpha luminosity function (LF) of high-redshift Ly-alpha emitters (LAEs) is one of the few observables of the re-ionization epoch accessible to date with 8-10 m class telescopes. The evolution with redshift allows one to constrain the evolution of LAEs and their role in re-ionizing the Universe at the end of the Dark Ages. We have performed a narrow-band imaging program at 1.06 microns at the CFHT, targeting Ly-alpha emitters at redshift z ~ 7.7 in the CFHT-LS D1 field. From these observations we have derived a photometric sample of 7 LAE candidates at z ~ 7.7. We derive luminosity func…
We investigate the clustering properties of $\sim 7000$ H$β$+[OIII] and [OII] narrowband-selected emitters at $z \sim 0.8 - 4.7$ from the High-$z$ Emission Line Survey. We find clustering lengths, $r_0$, of $1.5 - 4.0h^{-1}$ Mpc and minimum dark matter halo masses of $10^{10.7 - 12.1}\rm{M}_\odot$ for our $z = 0.8 - 3.2$ H$β$+[OIII] emitters and $r_0 \sim 2.0 - 8.3h^{-1}$ Mpc and halo masses of $10^{11.5 - 12.6}\rm{M}_\odot$ for our $z = 1.5 - 4.7$ [OII] emitters. We find $r_0$ to strongly increase both with increasing line luminosity and redshift. By taking into account the evolution of the c…
We present the photometric determination of the bright-end (L_Lya>10^43.5 erg/s) of the Lya luminosity function (LF) within four redshifts windows in the interval 2.2<z<3.3. Our work is based on the Javalambre Photometric Local Universe Survey (J-PLUS) first data-release, which provides multiple narrow-band measurements over ~1000 deg^2, with limiting magnitude r~22. The analysis of high-z Lya-emitting sources over such a wide area is unprecedented, and allows to select a total of ~14,500 hyper-bright (L_Lya>10^43.3 erg/s) Lya-emitting candidates. We test our selection with two spectroscopic f…
We present new results from the widest narrow band survey search for Lyman-alpha (Lya) emitters at z=5.7, just after reionization. We survey a total of 7 deg$^2$ spread over the COSMOS, UDS and SA22 fields. We find over 11,000 line emitters, out of which 514 are robust Lya candidates at z=5.7 within a volume of 6.3x10$^6$ Mpc$^3$. Our Lya emitters span a wide range in Lya luminosities, from faint to bright (L$_{\rm Lyα}\sim10^{42.5-44}$ erg s$^{-1}$) and rest-frame equivalent widths (EW$_0$~25-1000 Å) in a single, homogeneous data-set. By combining all our fields we find that the faint end slo…
We present a narrowband survey with three adjacent filters for z=2.8--2.9 Lyman Alpha Emitter (LAE) galaxies in the Extended Chandra Deep Field South (ECDFS), along with spectroscopic followup. With a complete sample of 96 LAEs in the narrowband NB466, we confirm a large-scale structure at z~ 2.8. Compared to the blank field in NB470 and NB475, the LAE density excess in the NB466 field is ~6.0+/-0.8 times the standard deviation expected at z~2.8, assuming a linear bias of 2. The overdense large scale structure in NB466 can be decomposed into 4 protoclusters, whose overdensities are 4.6 - 6.6. …
(Abridged) The clustering properties of a well-defined sample of 734 H-alpha emitters at z=0.84 obtained as part of the Hi-z Emission Line Survey (HiZELS) are investigated. The spatial correlation function is very well-described by (r/r_0)^-1.8, with r_0=2.7+-0.3Mpc/h. The correlation length r_0 increases strongly with H-alpha luminosity, L_H-alpha, from r_0~2Mpc/h for the most quiescent galaxies (star-formation rates of ~4M_sun/yr), up to r_0>5Mpc/h for the brightest galaxies in H-alpha. The correlation length also increases with increasing rest-frame K-band luminosity (M_K), but the r_0-L_H-…
We present and explore deep narrow- and medium-band data obtained with the Subaru and the Isaac Newton telescopes in the ~2 deg$^2$ COSMOS field. We use these data as an extremely wide, low-resolution (R~20-80) IFU survey to slice through the COSMOS field and obtain a large sample of ~4000 Lyman-$α$ (Lya) emitters from z~2 to z~6 in 16 redshift slices (SC4K). We present new Lya luminosity functions (LFs) covering a co-moving volume of ~10$^8$Mpc$^3$. SC4K extensively complements ultra-deep surveys, jointly covering over 4 dex in Lya luminosity and revealing a global (2.5<z<6) synergy LF with $…
We search for bright Ly$\rm α$ emitters among Spitzer SMUVS galaxies at z > 2.9 with homogeneous MUSE data. Although it only covers a small region of COSMOS, MUSE has the unique advantage of providing spectral information over the entire field, without the need of target pre-selection. This gives an unbiased detection of all the brightest Ly$\rm α$ emitters among SMUVS sources, which by design are stellar-mass selected galaxies. Within the studied area, ~14% of the SMUVS galaxies at z > 2.9 have Ly$\rm α$ fluxes F$\rm _λ$ > 7 x 10$^{-18}$ erg s$^{-1}$ cm$^{-2}$. These Ly$\rm α$ emitters are ch…

We present a spectroscopic survey of Ly$α$ emitters (LAEs) at $z\approx3.1$ in the Subaru MM-Newton Deep Survey Field. This field has deep imaging data in a series of broad and narrow bands, including two adjacent narrow bands NB497 and NB503 that have allowed us to efficiently select LAE candidates at $z\approx3.1$. Using spectroscopic observations on MMT Hectospec and Magellan M2FS, we obtained a sample of 166 LAEs at $z\approx3.1$ over an effective area of $\sim$1.2 deg$^2$, including 16 previously known LAEs. This is so far the largest (spectroscopically confirmed) sample of LAEs at this r…
The highly neutral inter-galactic medium (IGM) during the Epoch of Reionization (EoR) is expected to suppress Ly$α$ emission with damping-wing absorption, causing nearly no Ly$α$ detection from star-forming galaxies at $z{\sim}8$. However, spectroscopic observations of the 4 brightest galaxies (${\rm H}_{160}{\sim}25$ mag) at these redshifts do reveal prominent Ly$α$ line, suggesting locally ionised IGM. In this paper, we explore the Ly$α$ IGM transmission and environment of bright galaxies during the EoR using the Meraxes semi-analytic model. We find brighter galaxies to be less affected by d…
We estimate the number counts of line emitters at high redshift and their evolution with cosmic time based on a combination of photometry and spectroscopy. We predict the H$α$, H$β$, [OII], and [OIII] line fluxes for more than $35,000$ galaxies down to stellar masses of $\sim10^9$ $M_{\odot}$ in the COSMOS and GOODS-S fields, applying standard conversions and exploiting the spectroscopic coverage of the FMOS-COSMOS survey at $z\sim1.55$ to calibrate the predictions. We calculate the number counts of H$α$, [OII], and [OIII] emitters down to fluxes of $1\times10^{-17}$ erg cm$^{-2}$ s$^{-1}$ in …
Recently, the CIII] and CIV emission lines have been observed in galaxies in the early Universe ($z>5$), providing new ways to measure their redshift and study their stellar populations and AGN. We explore the first blind CII], CIII] and CIV survey ($z\sim0.68, 1.05, 1.53$, respectively) presented in Stroe et al. (2017). We derive luminosity functions (LF) and study properties of CII], CIII] and CIV line emitters through comparisons to the LFs of H$α$ and Ly$α$ emitters, UV selected star forming (SF) galaxies and quasars at similar redshifts. The CII] LF at $z\sim0.68$ is equally well describe…
We present spectroscopic follow-up of candidate luminous Ly$α$ emitters (LAEs) at $z=5.7-6.6$ in the SA22 field with VLT/X-SHOOTER. We confirm two new luminous LAEs at $z=5.676$ (SR6) and $z=6.532$ (VR7), and also present {\it HST} follow-up of both sources. These sources have luminosities L$_{\rm Lyα} \approx 3\times10^{43}$ erg s$^{-1}$, very high rest-frame equivalent widths of EW$_0\gtrsim 200$ Å and narrow Ly$α$ lines (200-340 km s$^{-1}$). VR7 is the most UV-luminous LAE at $z>6.5$, with M$_{1500} = -22.5$, even brighter in the UV than CR7. Besides Ly$α$, we do not detect any other rest-…
We report the discovery of a very bright (r = 20.16), highly magnified, and yet intrinsically very luminous Lyα emitter (LAE) at z = 2.82. This system comprises four images in the observer plane with a maximum separation of ~ 6" and it is lensed by a z = 0.55 massive early-type galaxy. It was initially identified in the Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey (BOSS) Emission-Line Lens Survey for GALaxy-Lyα EmitteR sYstems (BELLS GALLERY) survey, and follow-up imaging and spectroscopic observations using the Gran Telescopio Canarias (GTC) and William Herschel Telescope (WHT) confirmed the lensi…
In the standard picture, episodes of luminous quasar activity are directly related to supermassive black hole (SMBH) growth. The ionising radiation emitted over a quasar's lifetime alters the ionisation state of the surrounding intergalactic medium (IGM), enhancing the Ly$α$ forest transmission -- so-called proximity effect -- which can be observed in absorption spectra of background sources. Owing to the finite speed of light, the transverse direction of the proximity effect is sensitive to the quasar's radiative history, resulting in `light echoes' that encode the growth history of the SMBH …
We investigate the clustering and halo properties of $\sim 5000$ Ly$α$-selected emission line galaxies (LAEs) from the Slicing COSMOS 4K (SC4K) and from archival NB497 imaging of SA22 split in 15 discrete redshift slices between $z \sim 2.5 - 6$. We measure clustering lengths of $r_0 \sim 3 - 6\ h^{-1}$ Mpc and typical halo masses of $\sim 10^{11}$ M$_\odot$ for our narrowband-selected LAEs with typical $L_{\rm{Ly}α} \sim 10^{42 - 43}$ erg s$^{-1}$. The intermediate band-selected LAEs are observed to have $r_0 \sim 3.5 - 15\ h^{-1}$ Mpc with typical halo masses of $\sim 10^{11 - 12}$ M$_\odot$…
We establish a robust statistical description of the star-forming galaxy population at the end of cosmic HI reionization ($5.0\le{}z\le6.6$) from a large sample of 52 galaxies with spectroscopically confirmed redshifts from the VIMOS UltraDeep Survey. We identify galaxies with Ly$α$ either in absorption or in emission, at variance with most spectroscopic samples in the literature where Ly$α$ emitters dominate. We find that star-forming galaxies at these redshifts are distributed along a main sequence in the stellar mass vs. SFR plane. We report a flat evolution of the sSFR(z) in 3<z<6 compared…
