Sub-mm surveys toward overdense regions in the early Universe are essential to uncover the obscured star-formation and the cold gas content of assembling galaxies within massive dark matter halos. In this work, we present deep ALMA mosaic observations covering an area of $\sim 2'\times2'$ around MQN01 (MUSE Quasar Nebula 01), one of the largest and brightest Ly-$α$ emitting nebulae discovered thus far surrounding a radio-quiet quasar at $z\simeq3.25$. Our observations target the 1.2- and the 3-mm dust continuum, as well as the carbon monoxide CO(4-3) transition in galaxies in the vicinity of the quasar. We identify a robust sample of eleven CO line-emitting galaxies (including a closely-separated quasar companion) which lie within $\pm 4000\,{\rm km\,s^{-1}}$ relatively to the quasar systemic redshift. A fraction of these objects are missed in previous deep rest-frame optical/UV surveys thus highlighting the critical role of (sub-)mm imaging. We also detect a total of eleven sources revealed in their 1.2-mm dust continuum with six of them having either high-fidelity spectroscopic redshift information from rest-frame UV metal absorptions, or CO line which place them in the same narrow redshift range. A comparison of the CO luminosity function (LF) and 1.2-mm number count density with that of the general fields points to a galaxy overdensity of $δ> 10$. We find evidence of a systematic flattening at the bright-end of the CO LF with respect to the trend measured in blank fields. Our findings reveal that galaxies in dense regions at $z\sim3$ are more massive and significantly richer in molecular gas than galaxies in fields, hence enabling a faster and accelerated assembly. This is the first of a series of studies to characterize one of the densest regions of the Universe found so far at $z > 3$.
We study the environments of 49 WISE/NVSS-selected dusty, hyper-luminous, z~2 quasars using the Atacama Large Millimeter/Sub-millimeter Array (ALMA) 345GHz images. We find that 17 of the 49 WISE/NVSS sources show additional sub-mm galaxies within the ALMA primary beam, probing scales within ~150 kpc. We find a total of 23 additional sub-mm sources, four of which in the field of a single WISE/NVSS source. The measured 870 um source counts are ~10 times expectations for unbiased regions, suggesting such hyper-luminous dusty quasars are excellent at probing high-density peaks.
We present an Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) survey of CO(4--3) line emitting galaxies in 17 quasar fields at $z\sim4$ aimed to perform the first systematic search of dusty galaxies in high$-z$ quasar environments. Our blind search of galaxies around the quasars results in 5 CO emitters with S/N$\geq5.6$ within a projected radius of $R\lesssim1.5\,h^{-1}\,$cMpc and a velocity range of $\rmΔ\,v=\pm1000\,$km\,s$^{-1}$ around the quasar. In blank fields, we expect to detect only 0.28 CO emitters within the same volume, implying a total overdensity of $17.6^{+11.9}_{-7.6}$ in …
Recent work has suggested extreme [OIII] emitting star-forming galaxies are important to reionization. Relatedly, [OIII]/[OII] has been put forward as an indirect estimator of the Lyman Continuum (LyC) escape fraction ($f_{esc}$) at $z\gtrsim4.5$ when the opaque IGM renders LyC photons unobservable. Using deep archival U-band (VLT/VIMOS) imaging of a recently confirmed overdensity at $z\sim3.5$ we calculate tight constraints on $f_{esc}$ for a sample (N=73) dominated by extreme [OIII] emitters. We find no Lyman Continuum signal ($f_{esc}^{rel} < 6.3^{+0.7}_{-0.7} \%$ at $1σ$) in a deep U-band …
We present a result of a blind search for [CII] 158 $μ$m emitters at $z\sim 4.5$ using ALMA Cycle~0 archival data. We collected extra-galactic data covering at 330-360 GHz (band~7) from 8 Cycle~0 projects from which initial results have been already published. The total number of fields is 243 and the total on-source exposure time is 19.2 hours. We searched for line emitters in continuum-subtracted data cubes with spectral resolutions of 50, 100, 300 and 500 km/s. We could not detect any new line emitters above a 6-$σ$ significance level. This result provides upper limits to the [CII] luminosi…
We report the identification of four millimeter line emitting galaxies with the Atacama Large Milli/submillimeter Array (ALMA) in SSA22 Field (ADF22). We analyze the ALMA 1.1 mm survey data, with an effective survey area of 5 arcmin$^2$, a frequency range of 253.1--256.8 and 269.1--272.8 GHz, angular resolution of 0".7 and RMS noise of 0.8 mJy beam$^{-1}$ at 36 km s$^{-1}$ velocity resolution. We detect four line emitter candidates with significance levels above $6 σ$. We identify one of the four sources as a CO(9-8) emitter at $z = 3.1$ in a member of the proto-cluster known in this field. An…
Insights into Galaxy Morphology and Star Formation: Unveiling Filamentary Structures around an Extreme Overdensity at $z \sim 1.5$ Traced by [OII] Emitters
Measurements of QSO clustering in the SDSS show that $\mathrm{z}>4$ QSOs are some of the most highly biased objects in the universe. Their large correlation lengths of $r_0 \sim 20h^{-1}$Mpc are comparable to the most massive clusters of galaxies in the universe today and suggest that these QSOs may mark the locations of massive cluster progenitors at high redshift. We report the discovery of an overdensity of LBGs around QSO SDSSJ114514.18+394715.9 as part of our survey to identify Lyman-Break galaxies (LBGs) around luminous $\mathrm{z}\sim4$ QSOs. In this field three of the eight LBGs with s…
We present the results of a blind millimeter line emitter search using ALMA Band 6 data with a single frequency tuning toward four gravitational lensing clusters (RXJ1347.5-1145, Abell S0592, MACS J0416.1-2403, and Abell 2744). We construct three-dimensional signal-to-noise ratio (S/N) cubes with 60 MHz and 100 MHz binning, and search for millimeter line emitters. We do not detect any line emitters with a peak S/N > 5, although we do find a line emitter candidate with a peak S/N ~ 4.5. These results provide upper limits to the CO(3-2), CO(4-3), CO(5-4), and [CII] luminosity functions at z ~ 0.…
We present a comparison of the spatial distributions of Ly$α$ emitters (LAEs) and massive star-forming and quiescent galaxies (SFGs and QGs) at $2<z<4.5$. We use the photometric redshift catalog to select SFGs and QGs and a LAE catalog from intermediate/narrow bands obtained from the Subaru Telescope and Isaac-Newton Telescope in Cosmic Evolution Survey (COSMOS). We derive the auto-/cross- correlation signals of SFGs, QGs, and LAEs, and the galaxy overdensity distributions at the position of them. Whereas the cross-correlation signals of SFGs and QGs are explained solely by their halo mass dif…
In this paper we study the properties of the six optically dark galaxies detected in the 69 arcmin^2 GOODS-ALMA 1.1mm continuum survey. While none of them are listed in the deepest H-band based CANDELS catalog in the GOODS-South field down to H=28.16AB, we were able to de-blend two of them from their bright neighbor and measure an $H$-band flux for them. We note that AGS4 and AGS15 have H=25.23, 27.11AB respectively. Their extreme proximity (0.50", 0.27") to a bright optical source and their extreme faintness prevented them from being included in the H-band catalog. We present the spectroscopi…
We report Atacama Large Millimetre/submillimeter Array (ALMA) Cycle-5 follow-up observations of two candidate [CII] emitters at z ~ 6 in the ALMA deep field in SSA22 (ADF22). The candidates were detected blindly in a Cycle-2 ALMA survey covering ~ 5 square arcmins, with a single tuning, along with two CO lines associated with galaxies at lower redshifts. Various tests suggested at least one of the two > 6-sigma [CII] candidates should be robust (Hayatsu et al. 2017). Nevertheless, our new, deeper observations recover neither candidate, demonstrating a higher contamination rate than expected. T…

The ALMA Spectroscopic Survey in the Hubble Ultra Deep Field (ASPECS) Band 6 scan (212-272 GHz) covers potential [CII] emission in galaxies at $6\leq z \leq8$ throughout a 2.9 arcmin$^2$ area. By selecting on known Lyman-$α$ emitters (LAEs) and photometric dropout galaxies in the field, we perform targeted searches down to a 5$σ$ [CII] luminosity depth $L_{\mathrm{[CII]}}\sim2.0\times10^8$ L$_{\odot}$, corresponding roughly to star formation rates (SFRs) of $10$-$20$ M$_{\odot}$ yr$^{-1}$ when applying a locally calibrated conversion for star-forming galaxies, yielding zero detections. While t…
We present the analysis of deep HST multi-band imaging of the BDF field specifically designed to identify faint companions around two of the few Ly-alpha emitting galaxies spectroscopically confirmed at z~7 (Vanzella et al. 2011). Although separated by only 4.4 proper Mpc these galaxies cannot generate HII regions large enough to explain visibility of their Ly-alpha line, thus requiring a population of fainter ionizing sources in their vicinity. We use deep HST and VLT-Hawk-I data to select z~7 Lyman break galaxies around the emitters. We select 6 new robust z~7 LBGs at Y~26.5-27.5 whose avera…
Bright high-redshift quasars ($z>6$), hosting supermassive black holes ($\rm M_{BH} > 10^8 M_{\odot}$), are expected to reside in massive host galaxies embedded within some of the earliest and most massive galaxy overdensities. We analyze 1.2\,mm ALMA dust continuum maps of 35 bright quasars at $6<z<7$ and search the primary beam for excess dust continuum emission from sources with L$_{\rm IR} \gtrsim{ 10^{12}}$\,L$_{\odot}$ as evidence for early protoclusters. We compare the detection rates of continuum sources at $\geq5σ$ significance in the fields surrounding the quasars (A$_{\rm eff}$ = 4.…
Reionization and the ISM/Stellar Origins with JWST and ALMA (RIOJA): The core of the highest redshift galaxy overdensity at $z = 7.88$ confirmed by NIRSpec/JWST
We present cosmological ($30-400$ Mpc) distributions of neutral hydrogen (HI) in the inter-galactic medium (IGM) traced by Ly$α$ Emitters (LAEs) and QSOs at $z=2.1-2.5$, selected with the data of the on-going Hobby-Eberly Telescope Dark Energy Experiment (HETDEX) and the eBOSS survey. We investigate spatial correlations of LAEs and QSOs with HI tomography maps reconstructed from HI Ly$α$ forest absorption in the spectra of background galaxies and QSOs obtained by the CLAMATO survey and this study, respectively. In the cosmological volume far from QSOs, we find that LAEs reside in regions of st…
We report the discovery of a 10 comoving Mpc-scale structure traced by massive submillimeter galaxies (SMGs) at z~4.6. These galaxies are selected from an emission line search of ALMA Band 7 observations targeting 184 luminous submillimeter sources ($S_{850μ{\rm m}}\geq$ 6.2 mJy) across 1.6 degrees$^2$ in the COSMOS field. We identify four [CII] emitting SMGs and two probable [CII] emitting SMG candidates at z=4.60-4.64 with velocity-integrated signal-to-noise ratio of SNR>8. Four of the six emitters are near-infrared blank SMGs. After excluding one SMG whose emission line is falling at the ed…
The correlation between neutral Hydrogen (HI) in the intergalactic medium (IGM) and galaxies now attracts great interests. We select four fields which include several coherently strong Ly$α$ absorption systems at $z\sim2.2$ detected by using background quasars from the whole SDSS/(e)BOSS database. Deep narrow-band and $g$-band imaging are performed using the Hyper Suprime-Cam on the Subaru Telescope. We select out 2,642 Ly$α$ emitter (LAE) candidates at $z=2.177\pm0.023$ down to the Ly$α$ luminosity of $L_{\text{Ly}α}\approx 2 \times 10^{42} {\rm erg~s}^{-1}$ to construct the galaxy overdensit…
Cosmological simulations suggest a strong correlation between high optical-depth Ly$α$ absorbers, which arise from the intergalactic medium (IGM), and 3-D mass overdensities on scales of $10-30$ $h^{-1}$ comoving Mpc. By examining the absorption spectra of $\sim$ 80,000 QSO sight-lines over a volume of 0.1 Gpc$^3$ in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey III (SDSS-III), we have identified an extreme overdensity, BOSS1441, which contains a rare group of strong Ly$α$ absorbers at $z=2.32\pm 0.02$. This absorber group is associated with six QSOs at the same redshift on a 30 comoving Mpc scale. Using Mayal…
Massive galaxy overdensities at the peak epoch of cosmic star formation provide ideal testbeds for the formation theories of galaxies and large-scale structure. We report the confirmation of two massive galaxy overdensities at $z=2.24$, BOSS1244 and BOSS1542, selected from the MAMMOTH project using Ly$α$ absorption from the intergalactic medium over the scales of 15$-$30 $h^{-1}$ Mpc imprinted on the quasar spectra. We use H$α$ emitters (HAEs) as the density tracer and identify them using deep narrowband $H_2S1$ and broadband $K_{\rm s}$ imaging data obtained with CFHT/WIRCam. In total, 244 an…
We present deep spectroscopic follow-up observations of the Bremer Deep Field (BDF) where the two $z\sim$7 bright Ly$α$ emitters (LAE) BDF521 and BDF3299 were previously discovered by Vanzella et al. (2011) and where a factor of $\sim$3-4 overdensity of faint LBGs has been found by Castellano et al. (2016). We confirm a new bright Ly$α$ emitter, BDF2195, at the same redshift of BDF521, $z=7.008$, and at only $\sim$90 kpc physical distance from it, confirming that the BDF area is likely an overdense, reionized region. A quantitative assessment of the Ly$α$ fraction shows that the number of dete…
We present the statistics of faint submillimeter/millimeter galaxies (SMGs) and serendipitous detections of a submillimeter/millimeter line emitter (SLE) with no multi-wavelength continuum counterpart revealed by the deep ALMA observations. We identify faint SMGs with flux densities of 0.1-1.0 mJy in the deep Band 6 and Band 7 maps of 10 independent fields that reduce cosmic variance effects. The differential number counts at 1.2 mm are found to increase with decreasing flux density down to 0.1 mJy. Our number counts indicate that the faint (0.1-1.0 mJy, or SFR_IR ~ 30-300 Msun/yr) SMGs contri…
In order to investigate the physical relationship between strong Ly-alpha absorbers (logN_HI>20.0 cm^-2) such as damped Ly-alpha absorption systems (DLAs) and young star-forming galaxies at high redshift, we have conducted narrow-band observations of Ly-alpha emitters (LAEs) in a concentrated region of strong Ly-alpha absorbers at z= 2.3, the J1230+34 field. Using a catalog of Ly-alpha absorbers with logN_HI>20.0 cm^-2 based on the baryon oscillation spectroscopic survey (BOSS), we found 6 fields where 3 or more absorbers are concentrated within a (50 Mpc)^3 cubic box in the comoving scale. Am…
We quantify galaxy overdensities around three high-redshift quasars with known [CII] 158um companions: PJ231-20 (z=6.59), PJ308-21 (z=6.24) and J0305-3150 (z=6.61). Recent SCUBA2 imaging revealed the presence of 17 submillimeter galaxies (SMG) with sky separations $0.7'< θ< 2.4'$ from these three quasars. We present ALMA Band 6 follow-up observations of these SCUBA2-selected SMGs to confirm their nature and redshift. We also search for continuum-undetected [CII] emitters in the ALMA pointings and make use of archival MUSE observations to search for Lyman-$α$ Emitters (LAE) associated with the …
We discuss the nature and physical properties of gas-mass selected galaxies in the ALMA spectroscopic survey (ASPECS) of the Hubble Ultra Deep Field (HUDF). We capitalize on the deep optical integral-field spectroscopy from the MUSE HUDF Survey and multi-wavelength data to uniquely associate all 16 line-emitters, detected in the ALMA data without preselection, with rotational transitions of carbon monoxide (CO). We identify ten as CO(2-1) at $1 < z < 2$, five as CO(3-2) at $2 < z < 3$ and one as CO(4-3) at $z = 3.6$. Using the MUSE data as a prior, we identify two additional CO(2-1)-emitters, …
We present the first [CII] 158 $μ$m luminosity function (LF) at $z\sim 5$ from a sample of serendipitous lines detected in the ALMA Large Program to INvestigate [CII] at Early times (ALPINE). A search performed over the 118 ALPINE pointings revealed several serendipitous lines. Based on their fidelity, we selected 14 lines for the final catalog. According to the redshift of their counterparts, we identified 8 out of 14 detections as [CII] lines at $z\sim 5$, and two as CO transitions at lower redshifts. The remaining 4 lines have an elusive identification in the available catalogs and we consi…
We report the results of a search for serendipitous [CII] 157.74$μ$m emitters at $z\sim4.4$-$4.7$ using the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA). The search exploits the AS2UDS continuum survey, which covers ~50 arcmin$^2$ of the sky towards 695 luminous ($S_{870}\gtrsim1$mJy) submillimeter galaxies (SMGs), selected from the SCUBA-2 Cosmology Legacy Survey (S2CLS) 0.96deg$^2$ Ultra Deep Survey (UDS) field. We detect ten candidate line emitters, with an expected false detection rate of ten percent. All of these line emitters correspond to 870$μ$m continuum-detected sources in AS2…
We present the [CII]158$μ$m line luminosity functions (LFs) at $z\sim4-6$ using the ALMA observations of 118 sources, which are selected to have UV luminosity $M_{1500A}<-20.2$ and optical spectroscopic redshifts in COSMOS and ECDF-S. Of the 118 targets, 75 have significant [CII] detections and 43 are upper limits. This is by far the largest sample of [CII] detections which allows us to set constraints to the volume density of [CII] emitters at $z\sim4-6$. But because this is a UV-selected sample, we are missing [CII]-bright but UV-faint sources making our constraints strict lower limits. Our …
We present a detailed investigation of millimeter-wave line emitters ALMA J010748.3-173028 (ALMA-J0107a) and ALMA J010747.0-173010 (ALMA-J0107b), which were serendipitously uncovered in the background of the nearby galaxy VV114 with spectral scan observations at $λ$ = 2 - 3 mm. Via Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) detection of CO(4-3), CO(3-2), and [CI](1-0) lines for both sources, their spectroscopic redshifts are unambiguously determined to be $z= 2.4666\pm0.0002$ and $z=2.3100\pm0.0002$, respectively. We obtain the apparent molecular gas masses $M_{\rm gas}$ of these two …

The local Seyfert 2 galaxy NGC5135, thanks to its almost face-on appearance, a bulge overdensity of stars, the presence of a large-scale bar, an AGN and a Supernova Remnant, is an excellent target to investigate the dynamics of inflows, outflows, star formation and AGN feedback. Here we present a reconstruction of the gas morphology and kinematics in the inner regions of this galaxy, based on the analysis of Atacama Large Millimeter Array (ALMA) archival data. To our purpose, we combine the available $\sim$100 pc resolution ALMA 1.3 and 0.45 mm observations of dust continuum emission, the spec…
We present new results on [CII]158$μ$ m emission from four galaxies in the reionization epoch. These galaxies were previously confirmed to be at redshifts between 6.6 and 7.15 from the presence of the Ly$α$ emission line in their spectra. The Ly$α$ emission line is redshifted by 100-200 km/s compared to the systemic redshift given by the [CII] line. These velocity offsets are smaller than what is observed in z~3 Lyman break galaxies with similar UV luminosities and emission line properties. Smaller velocity shifts reduce the visibility of Ly$α$ and hence somewhat alleviate the need for a very …
Comprehensive JWST+ALMA Study on the Extended Ly$α$ Emitters, Himiko and CR7 at $z\sim 7$: Blue Major Merger Systems in Stark Contrast to Submillimeter Galaxies
Ly$α$ $λ$1216 (Ly$α$) emission extending over $\gtrsim\,\rm 10\,kiloparsec\,(kpc)$ around dusty, massive starbursts at $z\gtrsim3$ might represent a short-lived phase in the evolution of present-day, massive quiescent galaxies. To obtain empirical constraints on this emerging scenario, we present Ly$α$, CIV $λ$1550 (CIV), and HeII $λ$1640 (HeII) observations taken with the Multi Unit Spectroscopic Explorer towards J1000$+$0234: a galaxy pair at $z=4.5$ composed of a low-mass starburst (J1000$+$0234$-$South) neighboring a massive Submillimeter Galaxy (SMG; J1000$+$0234$-$North) that harbors a r…
Identifying a protocluster formation at z $\sim$ 4.5 in the COSMOS field: an extension of Taralay protocluster, traced by Ly-alpha emitters surrounding a submm galaxy
Recent observations with the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) detected far-infrared emission lines such as the [OIII] 88 μm line from galaxies at $z \sim 7 - 9$. Far-infrared lines can be used to probe the structure and kinematics of such high-redshift galaxies as well as to accurately determine their spectroscopic redshifts. We use a cosmological simulation of galaxy formation to study the physical properties of [OIII] 88 μm emitters. In a comoving volume of 50 $h^{-1}$ Mpc on a side, we locate 34 galaxies with stellar masses greater than $10^8\ {\rm M_\odot}$ at $z = 9$, a…
ALMA 870$μ$m continuum imaging has uncovered a population of blends of multiple dusty star-forming galaxies (DSFGs) in sources originally detected with the Herschel Space Observatory. However, their pairwise separations are much smaller that what is found by ALMA follow-up of other single-dish surveys or expected from theoretical simulations. Using ALMA and VLA, we have targeted three of these systems to confirm whether the multiple 870$μ$m continuum sources lie at the same redshift, successfully detecting $^{12}$CO($J = 3$-2) and $^{12}$CO($J = 1$-0) lines and being able to confirm that in th…
We report the serendipitous discovery of an overdensity of CO emitters in an X-ray-identified cluster (Log$_{10}$M$_{\rm halo}/M_{\odot}\sim13.6$ at z=1.3188) using ALMA. We present spectroscopic confirmation of 6 new cluster members exhibiting CO(2-1) emission, adding to 2 existing optical/IR spectroscopic members undetected in CO. This is the lowest mass cluster to date at z>1 with molecular gas measurements, bridging the observational gap between galaxies in the more extreme, well-studied clusters (Log$_{10}$~M$_{\rm halo}/M_{\odot}\gtrsim14$) and those in group or field environments at cos…
We report observations with the Atacama Large Millimetre Array (ALMA) of six submillimetre galaxies (SMGs) within 3 arcmin of the Distant Red Core (DRC) at $z=4.0$, a site of intense cluster-scale star formation, first reported by Oteo et al. (2018). We find new members of DRC in three SMG fields; in two fields, the SMGs are shown to lie along the line of sight towards DRC; one SMG is spurious. Although at first sight this rate of association is consistent with earlier predictions, associations with the bright SMGs are rarer than expected, which suggests caution when interpreting continuum ove…
We present a search for companion [CII] emitters to known luminous sources at $6<$ z $<6.5$ in deep, archival ALMA observations. The observations are deep enough to detect sources with L$_{\rm [CII]} \sim 10^8$ at z $\sim6$. We identify four robust line detections from a blind search of five deep fields centered on ultra-luminous infrared galaxies and QSOs, over an order of magnitude more than expected based on current observations and predictions, suggesting that these objects may be highly biased tracers of mass in the early Universe. We find these companion lines to have comparable properti…
We present an ALMA high-resolution observation of the 840 um continuum and [CII] line emission in the WISE-SDSS selected hyper-luminous (WISSH) QSO J1015+0020 at z~4.4. Our analysis reveals an exceptional overdensity of [CII]-emitting companions with a very small (<150 km/s) velocity shift with respect to the QSO redshift. We report the discovery of the closest companion observed so far in submillimetre observations of high-z QSOs. It is only 2.2 kpc distant and merging with J1015+0020, while two other [CII] emitters are found at 8 and 17 kpc. Two strong continuum emitters are also detected at…
We have conducted 1.1 mm ALMA observations of a contiguous $105'' \times 50''$ or 1.5 arcmin$^2$ window in the SXDF-UDS-CANDELS. We achieved a 5$σ$ sensitivity of 0.28 mJy, providing a flat sensus of dusty star-forming galaxies with $L_{\rm IR} \sim6\times10^{11}$ $L_\odot$ (for $T_{\rm dust}$ =40K) up to $z\sim10$ thanks to the negative K-correction at this wavelength. We detected 5 brightest sources (S/N$>$6) and 18 low-significance sources (5$>$S/N$>$4; these may contain spurious detections, though). One of the 5 brightest ALMA sources ($S_{\rm 1.1mm} = 0.84 \pm 0.09$ mJy) is extremely fain…
An ALMA survey of submillimetre galaxies in the Extended Chandra Deep Field South: an unbiased study of SMG environments measured with narrowband imaging
We present a search for [CII] line and dust continuum emission from optical dropout galaxies at $z>6$ using ASPECS, our ALMA Spectroscopic Survey in the Hubble Ultra-Deep Field (UDF). Our observations, which cover the frequency range $212-272$ GHz, encompass approximately the range $6<z<8$ for [CII] line emission and reach a limiting luminosity of L$_{\rm [CII]}\sim$(1.6-2.5)$\times$10$^{8}$ L$_{\odot}$. We identify fourteen [CII] line emitting candidates in this redshift range with significances $>$4.5 $σ$, two of which correspond to blind detections with no optical counterparts. At this sign…
Distant luminous Lyman-alpha emitters are excellent targets for detailed observations of galaxies in the epoch of reionisation. Spatially resolved observations of these galaxies allow us to simultaneously probe the emission from young stars, partially ionised gas in the interstellar medium and to constrain the properties of the surrounding hydrogen in the circumgalactic medium. We review recent results from (spectroscopic) follow-up studies of the rest-frame UV, Lyman-alpha and [CII] emission in luminous galaxies observed ~500 Myr after the Big Bang with ALMA, HST/WFC3 and VLT/X-SHOOTER. These…
Recent observations have successfully detected [O III] $88.3\,{\rm μm}$ and [C II] $157.6\,{\rm μm}$ lines from galaxies in the early Universe with the Atacama Large Millimeter Array (ALMA). Combining cosmological hydrodynamic simulations and radiative transfer calculations, we present relations between the metal line emission and galaxy evolution at $z=6-15$. We find that galaxies during their starburst phases have high [O III] luminosity of $\sim 10^{42}~\rm erg~s^{-1}$. Once supernova feedback quenches star formation, [O III] luminosities rapidly decrease and continue to be zero for $\sim 1…
We present a Herschel/SPIRE survey of three protoclusters at z=2-3 (2QZCluster, HS1700, SSA22). Based on the SPIRE colours (S350/S250 and S500/S350) of 250 $μ$m sources, we selected high redshift dusty star-forming galaxies potentially associated with the protoclusters. In the 2QZCluster field, we found a 4-sigma overdensity of six SPIRE sources around 4.5' (~2.2 Mpc) from a density peak of H$α$ emitters at z=2.2. In the HS1700 field, we found a 5-sigma overdensity of eight SPIRE sources around 2.1' (~1.0 Mpc) from a density peak of LBGs at z=2.3. We did not find any significant overdensities …
At redshift $z>5$ the far-infrared (FIR) continuum spectra of main-sequence galaxies are sparsely sampled, often with a single data point. The dust temperature $T_{\rm d, SED}$ thus has to be assumed in the FIR continuum fitting. This introduces large uncertainties regarding the derived dust mass ($M_{\rm d}$), FIR luminosity, and obscured fraction of the star formation rate. These are crucial quantities to quantify the effect of dust obscuration in high-$z$ galaxies. To overcome observations limitations, we introduce a new method that combines dust continuum information with the overlying $\h…
