We derive various inequalities involving the intersection number of the curves contained in geodesics and tight geodesics in the curve graph. While there already exist such inequalities on tight geodesics, our method applies in the setting of geodesics. Furthermore, the method gives inequalities with a uniform constant depending only on the topology of the surface.
Intersection norms are integer norms on the first homology group of a surface. In this article, we prove that there are some polytopes which are not dual unit balls of such norms. By the way, we investigate the set of collections of curves on $Σ$2 whose complement is a disk.
We give a recipe to compute the geometric intersection number of an integral lamination with a particular type of integral lamination on an n-times punctured disk. This provides a way to find the geometric intersection number of two arbitrary integral laminations when combined with an algorithm of Dynnikov and Wiest.
A flat virtual link is a finite collection of oriented closed curves $\mathfrak L$ on an oriented surface $M$ considered up to virtual homotopy, i.e., a composition of elementary stabilizations, destabilizations, and homotopies. Specializing to a pair of curves $(L_1,L_2)$, we show that the minimal number of intersection points of curves in the virtual homotopy class of $(L_1, L_2)$ equals to the number of terms of a generalization of the Anderson--Mattes--Reshetikhin Poisson bracket. Furthermore, considering a single curve, we show that the minimal number of self-intersections of a curve in i…
A classical inequality which is due to Lickorish and Hempel says that the distance between two curves in the curve complex can be measured by their intersection number. In this paper, we show a converse version; the intersection number of two curves can be measured by the sum of all subsurface projection distances between them. As an application of this result, we obtain a coarse decreasing property of the intersection numbers of the multicurves contained in tight multigeodesics. Furthermore, by using this property, we give an algorithm for determining the distance between two curves in the cu…
A fast algorithm for counting intersections of two normal curves on a triangulated surface is proposed. It yields a convenient way for treating mapping class groups of punctured surfaces by presenting mapping classes by matrices, and the composition by an exotic matrix multiplication. An efficient solution of the word problem for mapping class groups of punctured surfaces is proposed, with efficiency understood in a more restrictive way than the most common one.
Let $S_{g,p}$ denote the genus $g$ orientable surface with $p \ge 0$ punctures, and let $ω(g,p)= 3g+p-4$. We prove the existence of infinitely long geodesic rays $\left\{v_{0},v_{1}, v_{2}, ...\right\}$ in the curve graph satisfying the following optimal intersection property: for any natural number $k$, the endpoints $v_{i},v_{i+k}$ of any length $k$ subsegment intersect $O(ω^{k-2})$ times. By combining this with work of the first author, we answer a question of Dan Margalit.
For two oriented simple closed curves on a compact orientable surface with a connected boundary we introduce a simple computation of a value in the first homology group of the surface, which detects in some cases that the geometric intersection number of the curves is greater than zero when their algebraic intersection number is zero. The value, computed from two elements of the fundamental group of the surface corresponding to the curves, is found in the difference between one of the elements and its image of the action of Dehn twist along the other. To give a description of the difference sy…
Two free homotopy classes of closed curves in an orientable surface with negative Euler characteristic are said to be length equivalent if for any hyperbolic structure on the surface, the length of the geodesic in one class is equal to the length of the geodesic in the other class. We show that there are elements in the free group of two generators that are length equivalent and have different self-intersection numbers as elements in the fundamental group of the punctured torus and as elements in the pair of pants. This result answers open questions about length equivalence classes and raises …
We approximate intersection numbers $\big\langle ψ_1^{d_1}\cdots ψ_n^{d_n}\big\rangle_{g,n}$ on Deligne-Mumford's moduli space $\overline{\mathcal M}_{g,n}$ of genus $g$ stable complex curves with $n$ marked points by certain closed-form expressions in $d_1,\dots,d_n$. Conjecturally, these approximations become asymptotically exact uniformly in $d_i$ when $g\to\infty$ and $n$ remains bounded or grows slowly. In this note we prove a lower bound for the intersection numbers in terms of the above-mentioned approximatingexpressions multiplied by an explicit factor $λ(g,n)$, which tends to $1$ when…
We address a special case of the Stabilization Problem for Heegaard splittings, establishing an upper bound on the number of stabilizations required to make a Heegaard splitting of a Haken 3-manifold isotopic to an amalgamation along an essential surface. As a consequence we show that for any positive integer $n$ there are 3-manifolds containing an essential torus and a Heegaard splitting such that the torus and splitting surface must intersect in at least $n$ simple closed curves. These give the first examples of lower bounds on the minimum number of curves of intersection between an essentia…
We address the problem of computing bounds for the self-intersection number (the minimum number of self-intersection points) of members of a free homotopy class of curves in the doubly-punctured plane as a function of their combinatorial length L; this is the number of letters required for a minimal description of the class in terms of the standard generators of the fundamental group and their inverses. We prove that the self-intersection number is bounded above by L^2/4 + L/2 - 1, and that when L is even, this bound is sharp; in that case there are exactly four distinct classes attaining that…
We obtain a coarse relationship between geometric intersection numbers of curves and the sum of their subsurface projection distances with explicit quasi-constants. By using this relationship, we give applications in the studies of the curve graphs and the mapping class groups.
In this paper we study relations between intersection numbers on moduli spaces of curves and Hurwitz numbers. First, we prove two formulas expressing Hurwitz numbers of (generalized) polynomials via intersections on moduli spaces of curves. Then we show, how intersection numbers can be expressed via Hurwitz numbers. And then we obtain an algorithm expressing intersection numbers $<τ_{n,m}\prod_{i=0}^{r-1}τ_{0,i}^{k_i}>_g$ via correlation functions of primaries.
We introduce an operation that measures the self intersections of paths on a surface. As applications, we give a criterion of the realizability of a generalized Dehn twist, and derive a geometric constraint on the image of the Johnson homomorphism.
We present an approach of computing the intersection curve $\mathcal{C}$ of two rational parametric surface $§_1(u,s)$ and $§_2(v,t)$, one being projectable and hence can easily be implicitized. Plugging the parametric surface to the implicit surface yields a plane algebraic curve $G(v,t)=0$. By analyzing the topology graph $\G$ of $G(v,t)=0$ and the singular points on the intersection curve $\mathcal{C}$ we associate a space topology graph to $\mathcal{C}$, which is homeomorphic to $\mathcal{C}$ and therefore leads us to an approximation for $\mathcal{C}$ in a given precision.
We prove algebraic analogues of the facts that a curve on a surface with self-intersection number zero is homotopic to a cover of a simple curve, and that two simple curves on a surface with intersection number zero can be isotoped to be disjoint.
In the eighties Goldman discovered a Lie algebra structure on the vector space generated by the free homotopy classes of oriented curves on an oriented surface. The Lie bracket [a,b] is defined as the signed sum over the intersection points of a and b of the loop product of at the intersection points. If one of the classes has a simple representative we give a combinatorial group theory description of the terms of the Lie bracket and prove that this bracket has as many terms, counted with multiplicity, as the minimal number of intersection points of a and b. In other words the bracket with a s…
We present a new explicit formula for the $m$-th Bernoulli number $B_m$, which involves two integer parameters $a$ and $n$ with $0\le a\le m\le n$. If we set $a=0$ and $n=m$, then the formula reduces to the celebrated Kronecker formula for $B_m$. We give two proofs of our formula. One is analytic and uses a certain function in two variables. The other is algebraic and is motivated by a topological consideration of self-intersections of curves on an oriented surface.
The geometric intersection number of a curve on a surface is the minimal number of self-intersections of any homotopic curve, i.e. of any curve obtained by continuous deformation. Given a curve $c$ represented by a closed walk of length at most $\ell$ on a combinatorial surface of complexity $n$ we describe simple algorithms to (1) compute the geometric intersection number of $c$ in $O(n+ \ell^2)$ time, (2) construct a curve homotopic to $c$ that realizes this geometric intersection number in $O(n+\ell^4)$ time, (3) decide if the geometric intersection number of $c$ is zero, i.e. if $c$ is hom…
This is a revision of some expository lecture notes written originally for a 5-hour minicourse on the intersection theory of punctured holomorphic curves and its applications in 3-dimensional contact topology. The main lectures are aimed primarily at students and require only a minimal background in holomorphic curve theory, as the emphasis is on topological rather than analytical issues. Some of the gaps in the analysis are then filled in by the appendices, which include self-contained proofs of the similarity principle and positivity of intersections, and conclude with a "quick reference" fo…
We prove that for two germs of analytic mappings $f,g\colon (\mathbb{C}^n,0) \rightarrow (\mathbb{C}^p,0)$ with the same Newton polyhedra which are (Khovanskii) non-degenerate and their zero sets are complete intersections with isolated singularity at the origin, there is a piecewise analytic family $\{f_t\}$ of analytic maps with $f_0=f, f_1=g$ which has a so-called {\it uniform stable radius for the Milnor fibration}. As a corollary, we show that their Milnor numbers are equal. Also, a formula for the Milnor number is given in terms of the Newton polyhedra of the component functions. This is…
We study mapping class group orbits of homotopy and isotopy classes of curves with self-intersections. We exhibit the asymptotics of the number of such orbits of curves with a bounded number of self-intersections, as the complexity of the surface tends to infinity. We also consider the minimal genus of a subsurface that contains the curve. We determine the asymptotic number of orbits of curves with a fixed minimal genus and a bounded self-intersection number, as the complexity of the surface tends to infinity. As a corollary of our methods, we obtain that most curves that are homotopic are als…
For the free group $F_{N}$ of finite rank $N \geq 2$ we construct a canonical Bonahon-type continuous and $Out(F_N)$-invariant \emph{geometric intersection form} \[ <, >: \bar{cv}(F_N)\times Curr(F_N)\to \mathbb R_{\ge 0}. \] Here $\bar{cv}(F_N)$ is the closure of unprojectivized Culler-Vogtmann's Outer space $cv(F_N)$ in the equivariant Gromov-Hausdorff convergence topology (or, equivalently, in the length function topology). It is known that $\bar{cv}(F_N)$ consists of all \emph{very small} minimal isometric actions of $F_N$ on $\mathbb R$-trees. The projectivization of $\bar{cv}(F_N)$ provi…
