We report on the design and performance of a highly sensitive combined $^3$He/Cs magnetometer for the absolute measurement of magnetic fields. The magnetometer relies on the magnetometric detection of the free spin precession of nuclear spin polarized $^3$He gas by optically pumped cesium magnetometers. We plan to deploy this type of combined magnetometer in an experiment searching for a permanent electric dipole moment of ultracold neutrons at the Paul Scherrer Institute (Switzerland). A prototype magnetometer was built at the University of Fribourg (Switzerland) and tested at Physikalisch-Technische Bundesanstalt (Berlin, Germany). We demonstrate that the combined magnetometer allows Cramér-Rao- limited field determinations with recording times in the range of $\sim 500\mathrm{s}$, measurements above $500\mathrm{s}$ being limited by the stability of the applied magnetic field. % With a $100\mathrm{s}$ recording time we were able to perform an absolute measurement of a magnetic field of $\approx1\mathrm{μT}$ with a standard uncertainty of $ΔB\sim60\mathrm{fT}$, corresponding to $ΔB/B<$6$\times$10$^{-8}$.
We demonstrate the use of a hybrid $^{3}$He / $^{87}$Rb magnetometer to measure absolute magnetic fields in the pT range. The measurements were undertaken by probing time-dependent $^3$He magnetisation using $^{87}$Rb zero-field magnetometers. Measurements were taken to demonstrate the use of the magnetometer in cancelling residual fields within a magnetic shield. It was shown that the absolute field could be reduced to the 10 pT level by using field readings from the magnetometer. Furthermore, the hybrid magnetometer was shown to be applicable for the reduction of gradient fields by optimisin…
Miniaturized atomic magnetometers, particularly spin-exchange relaxation-free atomic magnetometers, have been emerging in clinical imaging applications such magnetocardiography and magnetoencephalography. Miniaturization, portability, and low cost are primary development targets for bio-magnetic imaging technologies, as well as high sensitivity and spatial and time resolution. In this paper, we propose a low-cost solution for a bio-magnetic imaging system based on atomic magnetometers, in which one laser source is used for a multi-channel atomic magnetometer sensor array. A novel design is dem…
We propose and demonstrate a radio-frequency atomic magnetometer with sub-Doppler laser cooled rubidium-87. With a simple and compact design, our system demonstrates a sensitivity of $330~pT/\sqrt{Hz}$ in an unshielded environment, thus matching or surpassing previously reported cold atoms designs. By merging the multiple uses and robustness of radio-frequency atomic magnetometers with the detailed control of laser cooling, our cold atom radio-frequency magnetometer has the potential to move applications of atomic magnetometry to high spatial resolution. Direct impact in metrology for applied …
We describe an array of spin-exchange relaxation free optical magnetometers designed for detection of fetal magnetocardiography (fMCG) signals. The individual magnetometers are configured with a small volume with intense optical pumping, surrounded by a large pump-free region. Spin-polarized atoms that diffuse out of the optical pumping region precess in the ambient magnetic field and are detected by a probe laser. Four such magnetometers, at the corners of a 7 cm square, are configured for gradiometry by feeding back the output of one magnetometer to a field coil to null uniform magnetic fiel…
We have designed and tested an atomic vectorial magnetometer based on the analysis of the coherent oscillatory transients in the transmission of resonant laser light through a Rb vapor cell. We show that the oscillation amplitudes at the Larmor frequency and its first harmonic are related through a simple formula to the angles determining the orientation of the magnetic field vector. The magnetometer was successfully applied to the measurement of the ambient magnetic field.
We demonstrate novel implementations of high-precision optical magnetometers which allow for spatially-selective and spatially-resolved in situ measurements using cold atomic clouds. These are realised by using shaped dispersive probe beams combined with spatially-resolved balanced homodyne detection. Two magnetometer sequences are discussed: a vectorial magnetometer, which yields sensitivities two orders of magnitude better compared to a previous realisation and a Larmor magnetometer capable of measuring absolute magnetic fields. We characterise the dependence of single-shot precision on the …
The detection of environmental magnetic fields is well established by optically pumped atomic magnetometers. Another focus of magnetometry can be the research on magnetic or spin-active solid-state samples. Here we introduce a simple and compact design of a rubidium-based M$_{\mathrm{x}}$-magnetometer, which allows for hosting solid-state samples. The optical, mechanical and electrical design is reported, as well as simple measurements which introduce the ground-state spin-relaxation time, the signal-to-noise ratio of a measurement, and subsequently the overall sensitivity of the magnetometer.…
We discuss the design and performance of a laser-pumped cesium vapor magnetometer in the $M_x$-configuration. The device will be implemented for the control and stabilization of fluctuating magnetic fields and gradients in a new experiment searching for a permanent electric dipole moment of the neutron. We have determined the intrinsic sensitivity of the device to be 21 fT with a 1 s integration time, limited by low frequency noise of the laser power. In the shot noise limit the magnetometer can reach a sensitivity of 7 fT with a 1 s integration time. We have used the device to study the magne…

We present a portable four-channel atomic magnetometer array operating in the spin exchange relaxation-free regime. The magnetometer array has several design features intended to maximize its suitability for biomagnetic measurement, specifically foetal magnetocardiography, such as a compact modular design, and fibre coupled lasers. The modular design allows the independent positioning and orientation of each magnetometer, in principle allowing for non-planar array geometries. Using this array in a magnetically shielded room, we acquire adult magnetocadiograms. These measurements were taken wit…
Optical magnetometers are currently able to achieve magnetometric sensitivities below 1 fT/Hz^1/2. Although such sensitivities are typically obtained for ultra-low-field measurements, a group of optical magnetometers allows the detection of the fields in much broader dynamic range without a significant compromise in the sensitivity. A particular example of such a device is the magnetometer exploiting amplitude-modulated nonlinear magneto-optical rotation. It enables to measure a magnetic field via detection of a polarization state of light traversing a medium subjected to the field. In this pa…
We present a magnetometer based on optically pumped Cs atoms that measures the magnitude and direction of a 1 $μ$T magnetic field. Multiple circularly polarized laser beams were used to probe the free spin precession of the Cs atoms. The design was optimized for long-time stability and achieves a scalar resolution better than 300 fT for integration times ranging from 80 ms to 1000 s. The best scalar resolution of less than 80 fT was reached with integration times of 1.6 to 6 s. We were able to measure the magnetic field direction with a resolution better than 10 $μ$rad for integration times fr…
Atomic magnetometers have very high absolute precision and sensitivity to magnetic fields but suffer from a fundamental problem: the vectorial or tensorial interaction of light with atoms leads to "dead zones", certain orientations of magnetic field where the magnetometer loses its sensitivity. We demonstrate a simple polarization modulation scheme that simultaneously creates coherent population trapping (CPT) in orientation and alignment, thereby eliminating dead zones. Using $^{87}$Rb in a 10 Torr buffer gas cell we measure narrow, high-contrast CPT transparency peaks in all orientations and…
An array of sixteen laser-pumped scalar Cs magnetometers was part of the neutron electric dipole moment (nEDM) experiment taking data at the Paul Scherrer Institute in 2015 and 2016. It was deployed to measure the gradients of the experiment's magnetic field and to monitor their temporal evolution. The originality of the array lies in its compact design, in which a single near-infrared diode laser drives all magnetometers that are located in a high-vacuum chamber, with a selection of the sensors mounted on a high-voltage electrode. We describe details of the Cs sensors' construction and modes …
We report the design and performance of a non-magnetic drift stable optically pumped cesium magnetometer with a measured sensitivity of 35 fT at 200 s integration time and stability below 50 fT between 70 s and 600 s. To our knowledge this is the most stable magnetic field measurement to date. The sensor is based on the nonlinear magneto-optical rotation effect: in a Bell-Bloom configuration a higher order polarization moment (alignment) of Cs atoms is created with a pump laser beam in an anti-relaxation coated Pyrex cell under vacuum, filled with Cs vapor at room temperature. The polarization…
We discuss the design and performance of a very sensitive low-field magnetometer based on the detection of free spin precession of gaseous, nuclear polarized 3He or 129Xe samples with a SQUID as magnetic flux detector. The device will be employed to control fluctuating magnetic fields and gradients in a new experiment searching for a permanent electric dipole moment of the neutron as well as in a new type of 3He/129Xe clock comparison experiment which should be sensitive to a sidereal variation of the relative spin precession frequency. Characteristic spin precession times T_2 of up to 60h cou…
We present a magnetic field confining coil with a sub-$10^{-3}$ field uniformity over a large fraction of the coil. The structure is entirely made out of printed circuit boards (PCBs). The PCB design allows to tailor the path of wires to fit the required geometry. We measure the field uniformity with cesium magnetometers in a field range from 1 to 10 $μ\mathrm{T}$. Our application uses such a coil for an atomic magnetometry-based current controller.
We present a theoretical and experimental study of spin precession in the presence of both a static and an orthogonal oscillating magnetic field, which is nonresonant, not harmonically related to the Larmor precession, and of arbitrary strength. Due to the intrinsic nonlinearity of the system, previous models that account only for the simple sinusoidal case cannot be applied. We suggest an alternative approach and develop a model that closely agrees with experimental data produced by an optical-pumping atomic magnetometer. We demonstrate that an appropriately designed nonharmonic field makes i…
Optically pumped atomic magnetometers (OPMs) offer highly sensitive magnetic measurements using compact hardware, offering new possibilities for practical precision sensors. Double-resonance OPM operation is well suited to unshielded magnetometry, due to high sensor dynamic range. However, sensor response is highly anisotropic with variation in the orientation of the magnetic field. We present data quantifying these effects and discuss implications for the design of practical sensors.
In recent years diamond magnetometers based on the nitrogen-vacancy (NV) center have been of considerable interest for magnetometry applications at the nanoscale. An interesting application which is well suited for NV centers is the study of nanoscale magnetic phenomena in superconducting materials. We employ the magnetic sensitivity of NV centers in diamond to interrogate the magnetic properties of a thin-layer yttrium barium copper oxide (YBCO) superconductor. Using fluorescence-microscopy methods and samples integrated with an NV sensor on a microchip, we measure the temperature of phase tr…
