We study the $p$-rank stratification of the moduli space of Prym varieties in characteristic $p > 0$. For arbitrary primes $p$ and $\ell$ with $\ell \not = p$ and integers $g \geq 3$ and $0 \leq f \leq g$, the first theorem generalizes a result of Nakajima by proving that the Prym varieties of all the unramified ${\mathbb Z}/\ell$-covers of a generic curve $X$ of genus $g$ and $p$-rank $f$ are ordinary. Furthermore, when $p \geq 5$ and $\ell = 2$, the second theorem implies that there exists a curve of genus $g$ and $p$-rank $f$ having an unramified double cover whose Prym has $p$-rank $f'$ for each $\frac{g}{2}-1 \leq f' \leq g-2$; (these Pryms are not ordinary). Using work of Raynaud, we use these two theorems to prove results about the (non)-intersection of the $\ell$-torsion group scheme with the theta divisor of the Jacobian of a generic curve $X$ of genus $g$ and $p$-rank $f$.
We consider a family of abelian surfaces over $\mathbb{Q}$ arising as Prym varieties of double covers of genus-$1$ curves by genus-$3$ curves. These abelian surfaces carry a polarization of type $(1,2)$ and we show that the average size of the Selmer group of this polarization equals $3$. Moreover we show that the average size of the $2$-Selmer group of the abelian surfaces in the same family is bounded above by $5$. This implies an upper bound on the average rank of these Prym varieties, and gives evidence for the heuristics of Poonen and Rains for a family of abelian varieties which are not …
Given a curve of genus 3 with an unramified double cover, we give an explicit description of the associated Prym-variety. We also describe how an unramified double cover of a non-hyperelliptic genus 3 curve can be mapped into the Jacobian of a curve of genus 2 over its field of definition and how this can be used to do Chabauty- and Brauer-Manin type calculations for curves of genus 5 with an unramified involution. As an application, we determine the rational points on a smooth plane quartic with no particular geometric properties and give examples of curves of genus 3 and 5 violating the Hass…
We construct the explicit solution of the initial value problem for sequences generated by the general Somos-6 recurrence relation, in terms of the Kleinian sigma-function of genus two. For each sequence there is an associated genus two curve $X$, such that iteration of the recurrence corresponds to translation by a fixed vector in the Jacobian of $X$. The construction is based on a Lax pair with a spectral curve $S$ of genus four admitting an involution $σ$ with two fixed points, and the Jacobian of $X$ arises as the Prym variety Prym$(S,σ)$.
If $π: Y \to X$ is an unramified double cover of a smooth curve of genus $g$, then the Prym variety $P_π$ is a principally polarized abelian variety of dimension $g-1$. When $X$ is defined over an algebraically closed field $k$ of characteristic $p$, it is not known in general which $p$-ranks can occur for $P_π$ under restrictions on the $p$-rank of $X$. In this paper, when $X$ is a non-hyperelliptic curve of genus $g=3$, we analyze the relationship between the Hasse-Witt matrices of $X$ and $P_π$. As an application, when $p \equiv 5 \bmod 6$, we prove that there exists a curve $X$ of genus $3…
In [17], we proved a structure theorem on the Mordell-Weil group of abelian varieties over function fields that arise as the twists of abelian varieties by the cyclic covers of projective varieties in terms of the Prym varieties associated with covers. In this paper, we provide an explicit way to construct the abelian varieties with large ranks over the higher dimension function fields. To do so, we apply the above-mentioned theorem to the twists of Albanese varieties of the cyclic multiple planes.
We prove that for abelian varieties with semistable ordinary reduction the p-adic Mazur-Tate height pairing is induced by the unit root splitting of the Hodge filtration on the first deRham cohomology.
We provide an easy method for the construction of characteristic polynomials of simple ordinary abelian varieties ${\mathcal A}$ of dimension $g$ over a finite field ${\mathbb F}_q$, when $q\ge 4$ and $2g=ρ^{b-1}(ρ-1)$ for some prime $ρ\ge 5$, with $b\ge 1$. Moreover, we show that ${\mathcal A}$ is absolutely simple if $b=1$ and $ρ=5$, but ${\mathcal A}$ is not absolutely simple for arbitrary $ρ$ with $b>1$.
I show that a conjecture of Joshi-Rajan on primes of Hodge-Witt reduction and in particular a conjecture of Jean-Pierre Serre on primes of good, ordinary reduction for an abelian variety over a number field follows from a certain conjecture on Galois rep- resentations which may perhaps be easier to prove (and I prove this conjecture for abelian compatible systems of a suitable type). This reduction (to a conjecture about certain sys- tems of Galois representations) is based on a new slope estimate for non Hodge-Witt abelian varieties. In particular for any abelian variety over a number field w…
We provide a characterization of almost ordinary abelian varieties over finite fields, and use this characterization to provide lower bounds for the sizes of some almost ordinary isogeny classes.
We investigate for families of smooth projective varieties over a localized polynomial ring Z[x_1,...,x_r][D^{-1}] the conjugate filtration on De Rham cohomology tensored with Z/NZ. As N tends to infinity this leads to the concept of the ordinary limit, which seems to be the non-archimedean analogue of the large complex structure limit
We develop Hida theory for Shimura varieties of type A without ordinary locus. In particular we show that the dimension of the space of ordinary forms is bounded independently of the weight and that there is a module of $Λ$-adic cuspidal ordinary forms which is of finite type over $Λ$, where $Λ$ is a twisted Iwasawa algebra.
We study a geometric analogue of the Iwasawa Main Conjecture for constant ordinary abelian varieties over $\ZZ_p^d$-extensions of function fields ramifying at a finite set of places.
We give algorithms to compute isomorphism classes of ordinary abelian varieties defined over a finite field $\mathbb{F}_q$ whose characteristic polynomial (of Frobenius) is square-free and of abelian varieties defined over the prime field $\mathbb{F}_p$ whose characteristic polynomial is square-free and does not have real roots. In the ordinary case we are also able to compute the polarizations and the group of automorphisms (of the polarized variety) and, when the polarization is principal, the period matrix.
We review the Newton stratification and Ekedahl-Oort stratification on the special fiber of a smooth integral model for a Shimura variety of Hodge type at a prime of good reduction. We show that the μ-ordinary locus coincides with the generic Ekedahl-Oort stratum, and that for any two geometric points in the μ-ordinary locus there is an isomorphism of the attached Dieudonne modules with additional structure. As a consequence, we proof that the μ-ordinary locus is open and dense, thus generalizing the results which were already known in the PEL-case. To prove our results we provide a method whi…
We study the geometry of unitary Shimura varieties without assuming the existence of an ordinary locus. We prove, by a simple argument, the existence of canonical subgroups on a strict neighborhood of the $μ$-ordinary locus (with an explicit bound). We then define the overconvergent modular forms (of classical weight), as well as the relevant Hecke operators. Finally, we show how an analytic continuation argument can be adapted to this case to prove a classicality theorem, namely that an overconvergent modular form which is an eigenform for the Hecke operators is classical under certain assump…
We construct a generalization of the Hasse invariant for any Shimura variety of PEL type A over a prime of good reduction, whose vanishing locus is the open and dense μ-ordinary locus.
We generalize some of the results of Andreatta, Iovita, and Pilloni and the author to Hodge type Shimura varieties having non-empty ordinary locus. For any $p$-adic weight $κ$, we give a geometric definition of the space of overconvergent modular forms of weight $κ$ in terms of sections of a sheaf. We show that our sheaves live in analytic families, interpolating the classical sheaves for integral weights. We define an action of the Hecke algebra, including a completely continuous operator at $p$. In some simple cases, we also build the eigenvariety.
The authors define an "anti-holomorphic" involution (or "real structure") on an ordinary Abelian variety (defined over a finite field k) to be an involution of the associated Deligne module (T,F,V) that exchanges F (the Frobenius) with V (the Verschiebung). The definition extends to include principal polarizations and certain level structures. The authors show there are finitely many isomorphism classes in each dimension, and they give a formula for this number which resembles the Kottwitz "counting formula" (for the number of principally polarized Abelian varieties over k), where the symplect…
Fix a prime number $\ell$. Graphs of isogenies of degree a power of $\ell$ are well-understood for elliptic curves, but not for higher-dimensional abelian varieties. We study the case of absolutely simple ordinary abelian varieties over a finite field. We analyse graphs of so-called $\mathfrak l$-isogenies, resolving that they are (almost) volcanoes in any dimension. Specializing to the case of principally polarizable abelian surfaces, we then exploit this structure to describe graphs of a particular class of isogenies known as $(\ell, \ell)$-isogenies: those whose kernels are maximal isotropi…
Let p>2 be a prime and let X be a compactified PEL Shimura variety of type (A) or (C) such that p is an unramified prime for the PEL datum. Using the geometric approach of Andreatta, Iovita, Pilloni, and Stevens we define the notion of families of overconvergent locally analytic p-adic modular forms of Iwahoric level for X. We show that the system of eigenvalues of any finite slope cuspidal eigenform of Iwahoric level can be deformed to a family of systems of eigenvalues living over an open subset of the weight space. To prove these results, we actually construct eigenvarieties of the expected…
Fix an ordinary abelian variety defined over a finite field. The ideal class group of its endomorphism ring acts freely on the set of isogenous varieties with same endomorphism ring, by complex multiplication. Any subgroup of the class group, and generating set thereof, induces an isogeny graph on the orbit of the variety for this subgroup. We compute (under the Generalized Riemann Hypothesis) some bounds on the norms of prime ideals generating it, such that the associated graph has good expansion properties. We use these graphs, together with a recent algorithm of Dudeanu, Jetchev and Robert …
