The discrepancy between abundances computed using optical recombination lines (ORLs) and collisionally excited lines (CELs) is a major unresolved problem in nebular astrophysics. We show here that the largest abundance discrepancies are reached in planetary nebulae with close binary central stars. This is illustrated by deep spectroscopy of three nebulae with a post common-envelope (CE) binary star. Abell 46 and Ou5 have O++/H+ abundance discrepancy factors larger than 50, and as high as 300 in the inner regions of Abell 46. Abell 63 has a smaller discrepancy factor around 10, but still above the typical values in ionized nebulae. Our spectroscopic analysis supports previous conclusions that, in addition to "standard" hot (Te~10000 K) gas, a colder (Te~1000 K) ionized component that is highly enriched in heavy elements also exists. These nebulae have low ionized masses, between 0.001 and 0.1 solar masses depending on the adopted electron densities and temperatures. Since the much more massive red-giant envelope is expected to be entirely ejected in the CE phase, the currently observed nebulae would be produced much later, in post-CE mass loss episodes when the envelope has already dispersed. These observations add constraints to the abundance discrepancy problem. Possible explanations are revised. Some are naturally linked to binarity, such as for instance high-metallicity nova ejecta, but it is difficult at this stage to depict an evolutionary scenario consistent with all the observed properties. The hypothesis that these nebulae are the result of tidal destruction, accretion and ejection of Jupiter-like planets is also introduced.
It is now clear that a binary evolutionary pathway is responsible for a significant fraction of all planetary nebulae, with some authors even going so far as to claim that binarity may be a near requirement for the formation of an observable nebula. In this chapter, we will discuss the theoretical and observational support for the importance of binarity in the formation of planetary nebulae, initially focussing on common envelope evolution but also covering wider binaries. Furthermore, we will highlight the impact that these results have on our understanding of other astrophysical phenomena, i…
It has recently been noted that there seems to be a strong correlation between planetary nebulae with close binary central stars, and highly enhanced recombination line abundances. We present new deep spectra of seven objects known to have close binary central stars, and find that the heavy element abundances derived from recombination lines exceed those from collisionally excited lines by factors of 5-95, placing several of these nebulae among the most extreme known abundance discrepancies. This study nearly doubles the number of nebulae known to have a binary central star and an extreme abun…
In this review/tutorial we explore planetary nebulae as a stage in the evolution of low-to-intermediate-mass stars, as major contributors to the mass and chemical enrichment of the interstellar medium, and as astrophysical laboratories. We discuss many observed properties of planetary nebulae, placing particular emphasis on element abundance determinations and comparisons with theoretical predictions. Dust and molecules associated with planetary nebulae are considered as well. We then examine distances, binarity, and planetary nebula morphology and evolution. We end with mention of some of the…
Context. Gaia Early Data Release 3 (EDR3), published in December 2020, features improved photometry and astrometry over that published in the previous DR2 file, and includes a substantially larger number of sources, of the order of 2,000 million, making it a paradigm of Big data Astronomy. Aims. We demonstrate how Gaia data mining can effectively help to solve the issue of central star misidentification, a problem that has plagued the field since its origin. As we did for DR2, our objective is to present a catalogue of CSPNe with astrometric and photometric information in EDR3. Methods. Gaia G…
Close binary interactions perform a key role in the formation and shaping of planetary nebulae. However only a small fraction of Galactic planetary nebulae are known to host close binary systems. Many such systems are detectable through photometric variability. We searched recently published epoch photometry data from Gaia DR3 for planetary nebula central stars with periodic photometric variability indicative of binarity, uncovering four previously unknown close binaries.
Imaging the elusive H-poor gas in planetary nebulae with large abundance discrepancy factors
It is now clear that central star binarity plays a key role in the formation and evolution of planetary nebulae, with a significant fraction playing host to close-binary central stars which have survived one or more common envelope episodes. Recent studies of these systems have revealed many surprises which place important constraints on the common envelope - a critical phase in the formation of a wide variety of astrophysical phenomena, including the cosmologically important supernovae type ia and other transient phenomena which will be detected by next-generation facilities, like the Large S…
In this paper, we will focus on the advances made in the last few years regarding the abundance discrepancy problem in ionized nebulae. We will show the importance of collecting deep, high-quality data of H II regions and planetary nebulae taken with the most advanced instruments attached to the largest ground-based telescopes. We will also present a sketch of some new scenarios proposed to explain the abundance discrepancy.
It is now clear that binarity plays a crucial role in many aspects of planetary nebulae (PNe), particularly the striking morphologies they exhibit. To date, there are ~60 known bCSPNe. However, both theory and observation indicates that this represents only the tip of the iceberg, with the Galactic PN population hosting orders of magnitude more. We are involved in a search for new bCSPNe to enhance the statistical validation of the key role of binarity in the formation and shaping of PNe. New discoveries of bCSPNe and their characterization carry important implications not only for understandi…

A prevailing open problem in planetary nebulae research, and photoionized gaseous nebulae research at large, is the systematic discrepancies in electron temperatures and ionic abundances as derived from recombination and collisionally excited lines. Peimbert (1967) proposed the presence of 'temperature fluctuations' in these nebulae, but the apparent amplitude of such fluctuations, as deduced from spectral diagnostics and/or abundance discrepancy factors, remain unexplained by standard photoionization modeling. While this and other alternative models to explain the temperature and abundance di…
Close binary central stars and the abundance discrepancy - new extreme objects
When comparing nebular electron densities derived from collisionally excited lines (CELs) to those estimated using the emission measure, significant discrepancies are common. The standard solution is to view nebulae as aggregates of dense regions of constant density in an otherwise empty void. This porosity is parametrized by a filling factor $f<1$. Similarly, abundance and temperature discrepancies between optical recombination lines (ORLs) and CELs are often explained by invoking a dual delta distribution of a dense, cool, metal-rich component immersed in a diffuse, warm, metal-poor plasma. …
Eight planetary nebulae have been identified as `born-again', a class of object typified by knotty secondary ejecta having low masses ($\sim$$10^{-4}$ M$_{\odot}$) with nearly no hydrogen. Abell 30, the archetype of the class, also belongs to a small subset of planetary nebulae that exhibit extreme abundance discrepancy factors (where Abell 30 is the most extreme), a phenomenon strongly linked to binary star interactions. We report the presence of light curve brightness variations having a period of 1.060 days that are highly suggestive of a binary central star in Abell 30. If confirmed, this …
The long-standing difference in chemical abundances determined from optical recombination lines and collisionally excited lines raises questions about our understanding of atomic physics, as well as the assumptions made when determining physical conditions and chemical abundances in astrophysical nebulae. Here, we study the recombination contribution of [O III] 4363 and the validity of the line ratio [O III] 4363/4959 as a temperature diagnostic in planetary nebulae with a high abundance discrepancy. We derive a fit for the recombination coefficient of [O III] 4363 that takes into account the …
OH231.8+4.2 is an archetypal pre-planetary nebulae (pPN). It is a binary system surrounded by bipolar nebula. Some years ago the authors extensively studied it and performed several VLBI observations from which they obtained mas-resolution maps of the SiO (7 mm) and H2O (1.3 cm) maser emissions. H2O masers were found to be distributed in two areas along the symmetry axis of the nebulae oriented nearly north-south delineating a bipolar outflow and their astrometric positions were accurately measured. SiO masers, indicating the position of the Mira component of the binary system, form a structur…
Context: Many if not most planetary nebulae (PNe) are now thought to be the outcome of binary evolutionary scenarios. However only a few percent of PNe in the Milky Way are known to host binary systems. The high precision repeated observing and long time baseline of Gaia make it well suited to detect new close binaries through photometric variability. Aims: We aim to find new close binary central stars of PNe (CSPNe) using data from the Gaia mission, building towards a statistically significant sample of post common envelope, close binary CSPNe. Methods: As the vast majority of Gaia sources do…
The substantial number of binary central stars of planetary nebulae (CSPNe) now known ($\sim$50) has revealed a strong connection between binarity and some morphological features including jets and low-ionisation structures. However, some features and asymmetries might be too complex or subtle to ascribe to binary interactions alone. A tertiary component, i.e. a triple nucleus, could be the missing ingredient required to produce these features. The only proven triple, NGC 246, is insufficient to investigate the shaping role of triple nuclei, but one straight-forward way to identify more triple…
Non-Maxwellian $κ$ electron energy distributions (EEDs) have been proposed in recent years to resolve the so-called ``electron temperature and abundance discrepancy problem'' in the study of planetary nebulae (PNe). Thus the need to develop diagnostic tools to determine from observations the EED of PNe is raised. Arising from high energy levels, the ultraviolet (UV) emission lines from PNe present intensities that depend sensitively on the high-energy tail of the EED. In this work, we investigate the feasibility of using the \ion{C}{2}]$λ$2326/\ion{C}{2}$λ$1335 intensity ratios as a diagnostic…
Most planetary nebulae (PNe) show beautiful, axisymmetric morphologies despite their progenitor stars being essentially spherical. Close binarity is widely invoked to help eject an axisymmetric nebula, after a brief phase of engulfment of the secondary within the envelope of the Asymptotic Giant Branch (AGB) star, known as the common envelope (CE). The evolution of the AGB would thus be interrupted abruptly, its envelope being rapidly ejected to form the PN, which a priori would be more massive than a PN coming from the same star, were it single. We aim at testing this hypothesis by investigat…
The Kinematics of the Permitted C II $λ$ 6578 Line in a Large Sample of Planetary Nebulae
