We consider the dynamics of a quantum phase-slip junction (QPSJ) -- a dual Josephson junction -- connected to a microwave source with frequency $ω_\textrm{mw}$. With respect to an ordinary Josephson junction, a QPSJ can sustain dual Shapiro steps, consisting of well-defined current plateaus at multiple integers of $ e ω_\textrm{mw} / π$ in the current-voltage (I-V) characteristic. The experimental observation of these plateaus has been elusive up to now. We argue that thermal as well as quantum fluctuations can smear the I-V characteristic considerably. In order to understand these effects, we study a current-biased QPSJ under microwave irradiation and connected to an inductive and resistive environment. We find that the effect of these fluctuations are governed by the resistance of the environment and by the ratio of the phase-slip energy and the inductive energy. Our results are of interest for experiments aimed at the observation of dual Shapiro steps in QPSJ devices for the definition of a new quantum current standard.
Recently, a contact-resistance-measurement method was developed to detect the minigap, hence the Andreev bound states (ABSs), in Josephson junctions constructed on the surface of three-dimensional topological insulators (3D TIs). In this work, we further generalize that method to the circumstance with radio frequency (rf) irradiation. We find that with the increase of rf power, the measured minigap becomes broadened and extends to higher energies, in a way similar to the rf power dependence of the outer border of the Shapiro step region. We show that the corresponding data of contact resistanc…
We investigate experimentally the physics of quantum phase slips in one-dimensional Josephson Junction chains. These quantum phase-slips are induced by quantum phase fluctuations occurring on single junctions of the chain. In our experiment we can tune the strength of these fluctuations as each chain junction is realized in form of a SQUID leading to tunable Josephson coupling. We determine the ground state of the chain via switching current measurements of the chain shunted by a large Josephson junction. Our results can be well fitted with a tight binding Hamiltonian taking into account quant…
We have studied quantum phase-slip (QPS) phenomena in long one-dimensional Josephson junction series arrays with tunable Josephson coupling. These chains were fabricated with as many as 2888 junctions, where one sample had a tunable weak link in the middle. Measurements were made of the zero-bias resistance, $R_0$, as well as current-voltage characteristics (IVC). The finite $R_0$ is explained by QPS and shows an exponential dependence on $\sqrt{E_J/E_C}$ with a distinct change in the exponent at $R_0=R_Q=h/4e^2$. When $R_0 > R_Q$ the IVC clearly shows a remnant of the Coulomb blockade, which …
Realization of robust coherent quantum phase slips represents a significant experimental challenge. Here we propose a new design consisting of multiple nanowire junctions to realize a phase-slip flux qubit. It admits good tunability provided by gate voltages applied on superconducting islands separating nanowire junctions. In addition, the gates and junctions can be identical or distinct to each other leading to symmetric and asymmetric setups. We find that the asymmetry can improve the performance of the proposed device, compared with the symmetric case. In particular, it can enhance the effe…
We study coherent quantum phase-slips which lift the ground state degeneracy in a Josephson junction ring, pierced by a magnetic flux of the magnitude equal to half of a flux quantum. The quantum phase-slip amplitude is sensitive to the normal mode structure of superconducting phase oscillations in the ring (Mooij-Schön modes). These, in turn, are affected by spatial inhomogeneities in the ring. We analyze the case of weak periodic modulations of the system parameters and calculate the corresponding modification of the quantum phase-slip amplitude.
Current state of the art devices for detecting and manipulating Majorana fermions commonly consist of networks of Majorana wires and tunnel junctions. We study a key ingredient of these networks - a topological Josephson junction with charging energy - and pinpoint crucial features for device implementation. The phase dependent tunneling term contains both the usual 2pi-periodic Josephson term and a 4pi-periodic Majorana tunneling term representing the coupling between Majoranas on both sides of the junction. In non-topological junctions when the charging energy is small compared to the Joseph…
We study the voltage noise properties including the switching rates and statistics of phase-slips in moderately damped Josephson junctions using a novel efficient numerical approach combining the matrix continued-fraction method with the full counting statistics. By analyzing the noise results obtained for the RCSJ model we identify different dominating components, namely the thermal noise close to equilibrium (small current-bias regime), the shot noise of (multiple) phase-slips in the intermediate range of biases and the switching noise for yet higher bias currents. We extract thus far inacce…
Superconducting order in a sufficiently narrow and infinitely long wire is destroyed at zero temperature by quantum fluctuations, which induce $2π$ slips of the phase of the order parameter. However, in a finite-length wire coherent quantum phase-slips would manifest themselves simply as shifts of energy levels in the excitations spectrum of an electrical circuit incorporating this wire. The higher the phase-slips probability amplitude, the larger are the shifts. Phase-slips occurring at different locations along the wire interfere with each other. Due to the Aharonov-Casher effect, the result…
Phase slips in a one-dimensional closed array of Josephson junctions hybridize the persistent current states (PCS) and plasmon branches of excitations. The interference between phase slips passing through different junctions of the array makes the hybridization sensitive to the charges of the superconducting islands comprising the array. This in turn results in the Aharonov-Casher effect for plasmons, which in absence of phase slips are insensitive to island charges.
We investigate the physics of coherent quantum phase slips in two distinct circuits containing small Josephson junctions: (i) a single junction embedded in an inductive environment and (ii) a long chain of junctions. Starting from the standard Josephson Hamiltonian, the single junction circuit can be analyzed using quasi-classical methods; we formulate the conditions under which the resulting quasi-charge dynamics is exactly dual to the usual phase dynamics associated with Josephson tunneling. For the chain we use the fact that its collective behavior can be characterized by one variable: the …
Quantum circuit theory is a powerful and ever-evolving tool to predict the dynamics of superconducting circuits. In its language, quantum phase slips (QPSs) are famously considered to be the exact dual to the Josephson effect. However, this duality renders the integration of QPS junctions into a unified theoretical framework very difficult, and as we show, gives rise to serious inconsistencies for different formalisms, and in some cases difficulties to include time-dependent flux driving. We propose to resolve these issues by reducing and compactifying the Hilbert space describing the QPS proc…
The influence of radio frequency microwaves on the Coulomb blockade characteristics in small Josephson junctions was studied using a one-dimensional array of ten small Al tunnel junctions in the frequency range from 1 MHz to 1000 MHz. Coulomb blockade voltage ($V_{\rm th}$) is diminished with increasing microwave power ($V_{\rm ac}$), where the $V_{\rm th}$-$V_{\rm ac}$ plots for varied frequencies fall on a single curve. We observed and theoretically analyzed a magnetic field $dependent$ renormalization of the applied microwave power, in addition to a magnetic-field $independent$ renormalizat…
We investigate the current-phase-relation (CPR) of long diffusive superconductor-normal metal-superconductor (SNS) Josephson junctions in thermodynamic equilibrium and under microwave irradiation. While in equilibrium good agreement with the predictions of quasi-classical theory is found, we observe that the shape of the CPR can be strongly affected by microwave irradiation. Close to a Josephson-phase difference of pi, the supercurrent can be strongly suppressed when increasing the rf-power. Our results can be understood in terms of microwave excitation of low-lying Andreev bound states across…
We study the emergence of dissipation in an atomic Josephson junction between weakly-coupled superfluid Fermi gases. We find that vortex-induced phase slippage is the dominant microscopic source of dissipation across the BEC-BCS crossover. We explore different dynamical regimes by tuning the bias chemical potential between the two superfluid reservoirs. For small excitations, we observe dissipation and phase coherence to coexist, with a resistive current followed by well-defined Josephson oscillations. We link the junction transport properties to the phase-slippage mechanism, finding that vort…
By measuring the Josephson emission of a diffusive Superconductor-Normal metal-Superconductor (SNS) junction at a finite temperature we reveal a non-trivial sensitivity of the supercurrent to microwave irradiation. We demonstrate that the harmonic content of the current-phase relation is modified due to the energy redistribution of quasiparticles in the normal wire induced by the electromagnetic field. The distortion originates from the phase-dependent out-of-equilibrium distribution function which is strongly affected by the ac-response of the spectral supercurrent. For phases close to $π$, t…
Bloch oscillations in a single Josephson junction in the phase-slip regime relate current to frequency. They can be measured by applying a periodic drive to a DC-biased, small Josephson junction. Phase-locking between the periodic drive and the Bloch oscillations then gives rise to steps at constant current in the I-V curves, also known as dual Shapiro steps. Unlike conventional Shapiro steps, a measurement of these dual Shapiro steps is impeded by the presence of a parasitic capacitance. This capacitance shunts the junction resulting in a suppression of the amplitude of the Bloch oscillations…
We study quantum phase-slip (QPS) processes in a superconducting ring containing N Josephson junctions and threaded by an external static magnetic flux. In a such system, a QPS consists of a quantum tunneling event connecting two distinct classical states of the phases with different persistent currents [K. A. Matveev et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 89, 096802 (2002)]. When the Josephson coupling energy EJ of the junctions is larger than the charging energy EC = e2/2C where C is the junction capacitance, the quantum amplitude for the QPS process is exponentially small in the ratio EJ/EC. At given mag…
We observe a dc electric current in response to terahertz radiation in lateral inter-digitated double-comb graphene p-n junctions. The junctions were fabricated by selective ultraviolet irradiation inducing p-type doping in intrinsic n-type epitaxial monolayer graphene. The photocurrent exhibits a strong polarization dependence and is explained by electric rectification in p-n junctions.
Topological features of low dimensional superconductors have caused a lot of excitement recently because of their broad range of applications in quantum information and their potential to reveal novel phases of quantum matter. A potential problem for practical applications is the presence of phase-slips that break phase coherence. Dissipation in non-topological superconductors suppresses phase-slips and can restore long-range order. Here we investigate the role of dissipation in a topological Josephson junction. We show that the combined effects of topology and dissipation keeps phase and anti…

Graphene's linear bandstructure and two-dimensional density of states provide an implicit advantage for sensing charge. Here, these advantages are leveraged in a deeply depleted graphene-oxide-semiconductor (D2GOS) junction detector architecture to sense carriers created by ionizing radiation. Specifically, the room temperature response of the silicon-based D2GOS junction is analyzed during irradiation with 20 MeV Si4+ ions. Detection was demonstrated for doses ranging from 12-1200 ions with device functionality maintained with no substantive degradation. To understand the device response, D2G…
The appearance of phase-slip lines, induced by an rf field, was observed experimentally in wide superconducting films in which the destruction of superconductivity by a dc current is associated with the formation of phase-slip lines. The characteristics of the separation of the film into superconducting and nonuniform, isothermal, nonequilibrium regions (phase-slip lines) under electromagnetic irradiation were studied.
We consider microwave spectroscopy of Josephon junctions composed of hybridized Majorana states in topological 1-D superconductors. We point out how spectroscopic features of the junction appear in the current phase relation under microwave irradiation. Moreover, we discuss a way to directly probe the nonequilibrium state associated with the 4π periodic Josephson effect. In particular, we show how the microwave driving can be used to switch from a 4π to a 2π Shapiro step in the current voltage relation.
Irradiating a Josephson junction with microwaves can operate not only on the amplitude but also on the phase of the Josephson current. This requires breaking time inversion symmetry, which is achieved by introducing a phase lapse between the microwave components acting on the two† sides of the junction. General symmetry arguments and the solution of a specific single level quantum dot model show that this induces chirality in the Cooper pair dynamics, due to the topology of the Andreev bound state wavefunction. Another essential condition is to break electron-hole symmetry within the junction.…
A junction with two superconductors coupled by a normal metal hosts Andreev bound states whose energy spectrum is phase-dependent and exhibits a minigap, resulting in a periodic supercurrent. Phase-dependent dissipation also appears at finite frequency due to relaxation of Andreev bound states. While dissipation and supercurrent versus phase have previously been measured near thermal equilibrium, their behavior in nonequilibrium is still elusive. By measuring the ac susceptibility of a graphene-superconductor junction under microwave irradiation, we find supercurrent response deviates from adi…
We propose to synchronize Bloch oscillations in a double phase-slip junction by modulating the gate voltage rather than the bias voltage. We show this is advantageous and the relatively small a.c. modulation of the gate voltage gives rise to the pronounced plateaux of quantized current of the width of the order of Coulomb blockade threshold. We theoretically investigate the setup distinguishing three regimes of the strong, weak, and intermediate coupling defined by the ratio of the gate capacitance $C$ and the effective capacitance of the phase-slip junctions. An important feature of the inter…
We investigate ac Josephson effect in the resonant tunneling through mesoscopic superconducting junctions. In the presence of microwave irradiation, we show that the trajectory of multiple Andreev reflections can be closed by emitting or absorbing photons. Consequently, photon-assisted Andreev states are formed and play the role of carrying supercurrent. On the Shapiro steps, dc component appears when the resonant level is near a series of positions with spacing of half of the microwave frequency. Analytical result is derived in the limit of infinite superconducting gap, based on which new fea…
Inspired by recent experiments, we study a short superconducting junction of length $L\ll ξ$ (coherence length) inserted in a dc-SQUID containing an ancillary Josephson tunnel junction. We evaluate the nonequilibrium occupation of the Andreev bound states (ABS) for the case of a conventional junction and a topological junction, with the latter case of ABS corresponding to a Majorana mode. We take into account small phase fluctuations of the Josephson tunnel junction, acting as a damped LC resonator, and analyze the role of the distribution of the quasiparticles of the continuum assuming that t…
Josephson junctions are the most prominent nondissipative and at the same time nonlinear elements in superconducting circuits allowing Cooper pairs to tunnel coherently between two superconductors separated by a tunneling barrier. Due to this, physical systems involving Josephson junctions show highly complex behavior and interesting novel phenomena. Here, we consider an infinite one-dimensional chain of superconducting islands where neighboring islands are coupled by capacitances. We study the effect of Josephson junctions shunting each island to a common ground superconductor. We treat the s…
We study the persistent current in a ring consisting of N >> 1 Josephson junctions threaded by the magnetic flux. When the dynamics of the ring is dominated by the capacitances of the superconducting islands the system is equivalent to the xy spin system in 1+1 dimensions at the effective temperature T*=(2JU)^(1/2), with J being the Josephson energy of the junction and U being the charging energy of the superconducting island. The numerical problem is challenging due to the absence of thermodynamic limit and slow dynamics of the Kosterlitz-Thouless transition. It is investigated on lattices co…
In thin superconducting wires, phase-slip by thermal activation near the critical temperature is a well-known effect. It has recently become clear that phase-slip by quantum tunnelling through the energy barrier can also have a significant rate at low temperatures. In this paper it is suggested that quantum phase-slip can be used to realize a superconducting quantum bit without Josephson junctions. A loop containing a nanofabricated very thin wire is biased with an externally applied magnetic flux of half a flux quantum, resulting in two states with opposite circulating current and equal energ…
We study the damping of plasma waves in linear Josephson junction chains as well as in two capacitively coupled chains. In the parameter regime where the ground capacitance can be neglected, the theory of the antisymmetric mode in the double chain can be mapped onto the theory of a single chain. We consider two sources of relaxation: the scattering from quantum phase slips (QPS) and the interaction among plasmons related to the nonlinearity of the Josephson potential. The contribution to the relaxation rate $1/τ$ from the nonlinearity scales with the fourth power of frequency $ω$, while the ph…
We theoretically investigate heat transport in temperature-biased Josephson tunnel junctions in the presence of an in-plane magnetic field. In full analogy with the Josephson critical current, the phase-dependent component of the heat flux through the junction displays coherent diffraction. Thermal transport is analyzed in three prototypical junction geometries highlighting their main differences. Notably, minimization of the Josephson coupling energy requires the quantum phase difference across the junction to undergo π-slips in suitable intervals of magnetic flux. An experimental setup suite…
The conventional approach to circuit quantization is based on node fluxes and traces the motion of node charges on the islands of the circuit. However, for some devices, the relevant physics can be best described by the motion of polarization charges over the branches of the circuit that are in general related to the node charges in a highly nonlocal way. Here, we present a method, dual to the conventional approach, for quantizing planar circuits in terms of loop charges. In this way, the polarization charges are directly obtained as the differences of the two loop charges on the neighboring l…
We have studied the current voltage characteristics of diffusive mesoscopic Nb-Cu-Nb Josephson junctions with highly-transparent Nb-Cu interfaces. We consider the low-voltage and high-temperature regime eV<ε_{c}<k_{B}T where epsilon_{c} is the Thouless energy. The observed excess current as well as the observed sub-harmonic Shapiro steps under microwave irradiation suggest the occurrence of low-energy coherent Multiple Andreev Reflection (MAR).
In order to illustrate the emergence of Coulomb blockade from coherent quantum phase-slip processes in thin superconducting wires, we propose and theoretically investigate two elementary setups, or "devices". The setups are derived from Cooper-pair box and Cooper-pair transistor, so we refer to them as QPS-box and QPS-transistor, respectively. We demonstrate that the devices exhibit sensitivity to a charge induced by a gate electrode, this being the main signature of Coulomb blockade. Experimental realization of these devices will unambiguously prove the Coulomb blockade as an effect of cohere…
We have investigated the microwave response of nanotube Josephson junctions at 600-900 MHz at microwave powers corresponding to currents from 0 to $2\times I_{\mathrm C}$ in the junction. Compared with theoretical modeling, the response of the junctions correspond well to the lumped element model of resistively and capacitively shunted junction. We demonstrate the operation of these superconducting FETs as charge detectors at high frequencies without any matching circuits. Gate-voltage-induced charge $Q_{\rm G}$ modifies the critical current $I_{\rm C}$, which changes the effective impedance o…
We study theoretically the effect of interactions between quantum phase slips in a short superconducting wire beyond the dilute phase slip approximation. In contrast to the smooth transition in dissipative Josephson junctions, our analysis shows that treating these interactions in a self consistent manner leads to a very sharp transition with a critical resistance of $R_Q= h/(4e^2)$. The addition of the quasi-particles resistance at finite temperature leads to a quantitative agreement with recent experiments on short MoGe nanowires. Our treatment is complementary to the theory of the thermal a…
Using the nonequilibrium Green function, we show that microwave irradiation can reverse the supercurrent flowing through a superconductor / quantum-dot / superconductor structure. In contrast with the conventional sideband effect in normal-metal / quantum-dot / normal-metal junctions, the photon-assisted structures appear near $E_{0}=\frac{n}{2}\hbar ω(n=\pm 1,\pm 2...)$, where $E_{0}$ is the resonant energy level of the quantum dot and $ω$ is the frequency of microwave field. Each photon-assisted structure is composed of a negative and a positive peak, with an abrupt jump from the negative pe…
Superconducting computing promises enhanced computational power in both classical and quantum approaches. Yet, scalable and fast superconducting memories are not implemented. Here, we propose a fully superconducting memory cell based on the hysteretic phase-slip transition existing in long aluminum nanowire Josephson junctions. Embraced by a superconducting ring, the memory cell codifies the logic state in the direction of the circulating persistent current, as commonly defined in flux-based superconducting memories. But, unlike the latter, the hysteresis here is a consequence of the phase-sli…
We propose a theory for photon-assisted macroscopic quantum tunneling (MQT) in a stack of capacitively-coupled intrinsic Josephson junctions in which the longitudinal Josephson plasma, i.e., longitudinal collective phase oscillation modes, is excited. The scheme of energy-level quantization in the collective oscillatory states is clarified in the $N$-junction system. When the MQT occurs from the single-plasmon states excited by microwave irradiation in the multi-photon process to the uniform voltage state, our theory predicts that the escape rate is proportional to $N^2$. This result is consis…

Microwave irradiation of Nb-InAs-Nb junctions reveals frequency-doubled Josephson currents which persist to high temperatures, in the absence of a critical current. A nonequilibrium dynamical model, based on time-dependent Andreev bound states, successfully accounts for the resulting half-integer Shapiro step and an enhancement in the conductance near zero bias.
A theory is offered for the ballistic 4-terminal Josephson junction. The studied system consists of a mesoscopic two-dimensional normal rectangular layer which is attached in each side to the bulk superconducting banks (terminals). The relation between the currents through the different terminals, which is valid for arbitrary temperatures and junction sizes, is obtained. The nonlocal coupling of the supercurrents leads to a new effect, specific for the mesoscopic weak link between two superconducting rings; an applied magnetic flux through one of the rings produces a magnetic flux in the other…
A superconducting quantum interference device (SQUID) comprising 0- and $π$-Josephson junctions (JJs), called $π$-SQUID, is studied by the resistively shunted junction model. The $π$-SQUID shows half-integer Shapiro-steps (SS) under microwave irradiation at the voltage $V$ = $(\hbar/2e)Ω(n/2)$, with angular frequency $Ω$ and half-integer $n$/2 in addition to integer $n$. We show that the $π$-SQUID can be a $π$-qubit with spontaneous loop currents by which the half-integer SS are induced. Making the 0- and $π$-JJs equivalent is a key for the half-integer SS and realizing the $π$-qubit.
The investigation of the switching current probability distribution of a Josephson junction is a conventional tool to gain information on the phase slips dynamics as a function of the temperature. Here we adopt this well-established technique to probe the impact of an external static electric field on the occurrence of phase slips in gated all-metallic titanium (Ti) Josephson weak links. We show, in a temperature range between 20 mK and 420 mK, that the evolution of the phase slips dynamics as a function of the electrostatic field starkly differs from that observed as a function of the tempera…
We show that a controllable dc magnetization is accumulated in a junction comprising a quantum dot coupled to non-magnetic reservoirs if the junction is subjected to a time-dependent spin-orbit interaction. The latter is induced by an ac electric field generated by microwave irradiation of the gated junction. The magnetization is caused by inelastic spin-flip scattering of electrons that tunnel through the junction, and depends on the polarization of the electric field: a circularly polarized field leads to the maximal effect, while there is no effect in a linearly polarized field. Furthermore…
The observation of very large microwave-enhanced critical currents in superconductor-normal metal-superconductor (SNS) junctions at temperatures well below the critical temperature of the electrodes has remained without a satisfactory theoretical explanation for more than three decades. Here we present a theory of the supercurrent in diffusive SNS junctions under microwave irradiation based on the quasiclassical Green's function formalism. We show that the enhancement of the critical current is due to the energy redistribution of the quasiparticles in the normal wire induced by the electromagn…
A phase slip is a localized disturbance in the coherence of a superconductor allowing an abrupt 2$π$ phase shift. Phase slips are a ubiquitous feature of one-dimensional superconductors and also have an analogue in two-dimensions. Here we present electrical transport measurements on boron-doped nanocrystalline diamond (BNCD) microbridges where, despite their three-dimensional macroscopic geometry, we find clear evidence of phase slippage in both the resistance-temperature and voltage-current characteristics. We attribute this behavior to the unusual microstructure of BNCD. We argue that the co…
Topological Josephson junctions (JJs), which contain Majorana bound states, are expected to exhibit 4$π$-periodic current-phase relation, thereby resulting in doubled Shapiro steps under microwave irradiation. We performed numerical calculations of dynamical properties of topological JJs using a modified resistively and capacitively shunted junction model and extensively investigated the progressive evolution of Shapiro steps as a function of the junction parameters and microwave power and frequency. Our calculation results indicate that the suppression of odd-integer Shapiro steps, i.e., evid…
Generation and control of non-classical electromagnetic fields is of crucial importance for quantum information physics. While usual methods for the production of such fields rely on a non-linearity (of a crystal, a Josephson junction, etc.), a recent experiment performed on a normal conductor, a tunnel junction under microwave irradiation, has unveiled an alternative: the use of electron shot noise in a quantum conductor\cite{PAN_squeezing}. Here we show that such a device can emit \emph{pairs of microwave photons} of different frequencies with a rate as high as that of superconducting Joseph…
We simulate the current-voltage relation of short layered superconductors, which we model as stacks of capacitively coupled Josephson junctions. The system is driven by external laser fields, in order to optically control the voltage drop across the junction. We identify parameter regimes in which supercurrents can be stabilised against thermally induced phase slips, thus reducing the effective voltage across the superconductor. Furthermore, single driven Josephson junctions are known to exhibit phase-locked states, where the superconducting phase is locked to the driving field. We numerically…
A superconductor subject to electromagnetic irradiation in the terahertz range can show amplitude oscillations of its order parameter. However, coupling this so-called Higgs mode to the charge current is notoriously difficult. We propose to achieve such a coupling in a particle-hole-asymmetric configuration using a DC-voltage-biased normal-metal--superconductor tunnel junction. Using the quasiclassical Green's function formalism, we demonstrate three characteristic signatures of the Higgs mode: (i) The AC charge current exhibits a pronounced resonant behavior and is maximal when the radiation …
The simultaneous suppression of charge fluctuations and offsets is crucial for preserving quantum coherence in devices exploiting large quantum fluctuations of the superconducting phase. This requires an environment with both extremely low DC and high RF impedance. Such an environment is provided by a superinductance, defined as a zero DC resistance inductance whose impedance exceeds the resistance quantum $R_Q = h/(2e)^2 \simeq 6.5\ \mathrm{kΩ}$ at frequencies of interest (1 - 10 GHz). In addition, the superinductance must have as little dissipation as possible, and possess a self-resonant fr…
We have theoretically demonstrated the emission of circularly-polarized terahertz (THz) waves from intrinsic Josephson junctions (IJJs) which is locally heated by an external heat source such as the laser irradiation. We focus on a mesa-structured IJJ whose geometry is slightly deviate from a square and find that the local heating make it possible to emit circularly-polarized THz waves. In this mesa, the inhomogeneity of critical current density induced by the local heating excites the electromagnetic cavity modes TM (1,0) and TM (0,1), whose polarizations are orthogonal to each other. The mix…
