For a smooth manifold $N$ denote by $E^m(N)$ the set of smooth isotopy classes of smooth embeddings $N\to\mathbb R^m$. A description of the set $E^m(S^p\times S^q)$ was known only for $p=q=0$ or for $p=0$, $m\ne q+2$ or for $2m\ge 2(p+q)+\max\{p,q\}+4$. (The description was given in terms of homotopy groups of spheres and of Stiefel manifolds.) For $m\ge2p+q+3$ we introduce an abelian group structure on $E^m(S^p\times S^q)$ and describe this group `up to an extension problem'. This result has corollaries which, under stronger dimension restrictions, more explicitly describe $E^m(S^p\times S^q)$. The proof is based on relations between sets $E^m(N)$ for different $N$ and $m$, in particular, on a recent exact sequence of M. Skopenkov.
In this paper we show how to combinatorically compute the rotation class of a large family of embedded Legendrian tori in $\mathbb{R}^5$ with the standard contact form. In particular, we give a formula to compute the Maslov index for any loop on the torus and compute the Maslov number of the Legendrian torus. These formulas are a necessary component in computing contact homology. Our methods use a new way to represent knotted Legendrian tori called Lagrangian hypercube diagrams.
In this paper we introduce a representation of a embedded knotted (sometimes Lagrangian) tori in $\BR^4$ called a hypercube diagram, i.e., a 4-dimensional cube diagram. We prove the existence of hypercube homology that is invariant under 4-dimensional cube diagram moves, a homology that is based on knot Floer homology. We provide examples of hypercube diagrams and hypercube homology, including using the new invariant to distinguish (up to cube moves) two "Hopf linked" tori. We also give examples of a "Trefoil" torus and an immersed knotted torus that is an amalgamation of the $5_2$ knot and a …
In this paper we show that there exist simply connected symplectic 4-manifolds which contain infinitely many knotted lagrangian tori, i.e. lagrangian embeddings of tori that are homotopic but not isotopic. Moreover, the homology class they represent can be assumed to be nontrivial and primitive. This answers a question of Eliashberg and Polterovich.
In this note, we investigate genera for the slopes of a knotted torus in the 4-sphere analogous to the genus of a classical knot. We compare various formulations of this notion, and use this notion to study the extendable subgroup of the mapping class group of the knotted torus.
This paper is devoted to the classification of embeddings of higher dimensional manifolds. We study the case of embeddings $S^p\times S^q\to S^m$, which we call knotted tori. The set of knotted tori in the the space of sufficiently high dimension, namely in the metastable range $m\ge p+3q/2+2$, $p\le q$, which is a natural limit for the classical methods of embedding theory, has been explicitely described earlier. The aim of this note is to present an approach which allows for results in lower dimension.
Echeverria recently introduced an invariant for a smoothly embedded torus in a homology $S^1\times S^3$, using gauge theory for singular connections. We define a new topological invariant of such an embedded torus, analogous to the classical Levine-Tristram invariant of a knot. In the 3-dimensional situation, a count of singular connections on a knot complement reproduces the Levine-Tristram invariant. We compute the invariant for a number of examples embedded tori, and show that our topological invariant is the same as what one might expect from Echeverria's invariant. Langte Ma has subsequen…
We define an simple invariant of an embedded nullhomologous Lagrangian torus and use this invariant to show that many symplectic 4-manifolds have infinitely many pairwise symplectically inequivalent nullhomologous Lagrangian tori. We further show that for a large class of examples that lambda(T) is actually a C-infinity invariant. In addition, this invariant is used to show that many symplectic 4-manifolds have nontrivial homology classes which are represented by infinitely many pairwise inequivalent Lagrangian tori, a result first proved by S Vidussi for the homotopy K3-surface obtained from …
In this article, we classify all involutions on S^6 with 3-dimensional fixed point set. In particular, we discuss the relation between the classification of involutions with fixed point set a knotted 3-sphere and the classification of free involutions on homotopy CP^3's.
We prove that every smoothly embedded surface in a 4--manifold can be isotoped to be in bridge position with respect to a given trisection of the ambient 4--manifold; that is, after isotopy, the surface meets components of the trisection in trivial disks or arcs. Such a decomposition, which we call a \emph{generalized bridge trisection}, extends the authors' definition of bridge trisections for surfaces in $S^4$. Using this new construction, we give diagrammatic representations called \emph{shadow diagrams} for knotted surfaces in 4--manifolds. We also provide a low-complexity classification f…
A book representation of a graph is a particular way of embedding a graph in three dimensional space so that the vertices lie on a circle and the edges are chords on disjoint topological disks. We describe a set of operations on book representations that preserves ambient isotopy, and apply these operations to $K_6$, the complete graph with six vertices. We prove there are exactly 59 distinct book representations for $K_6$, and we identify the number and type of knotted and linked cycles in each representation. We show that book representations of $K_6$ contain between one and seven links, and…
Ribbon 2-knotted objects are locally flat embeddings of surfaces in 4-space which bound immersed 3-manifolds with only ribbon singularities. They appear as topological realizations of welded knotted objects, which is a natural quotient of virtual knot theory. In this paper we consider ribbon tubes and ribbon torus-links, which are natural analogues of string links and links, respectively. We show how ribbon tubes naturally act on the reduced free group, and how this action classifies ribbon tubes up to link-homotopy, that is when allowing each component to cross itself. At the combinatorial le…
Let $K= K(w,b,t)$ be a 1-bridge braid in a solid torus $V$, and let $γ$ be a $(p,q)$ curve on the torus $T = \partial V$ of the exterior $M_K$ of $K$. It will be shown that Dehn filling on $T$ along $γ$ produces a solid torus if and only if $p$ and $q$ satisfy one of four conditions determined by the parameters $(w,b,t)$ of the knot $K$. This solves the classification problem raised by Menasco and Zhang for such Dehn fillings.
Almost toric manifolds form a class of singular Lagrangian fibered symplectic manifolds that is a natural generalization of toric manifolds. Notable examples include the K3 surface, the phase space of the spherical pendulum and rational balls useful for symplectic surgeries. The main result of the paper is a complete classification up to diffeomorphism of closed almost toric four-manifolds. A key step in the proof is a geometric classification of the singular affine structures that can occur on the base of a closed almost toric four-manifold.
This paper introduces the notion of twisted toric manifolds which is a generalization of one of symplectic toric manifolds, and proves the weak Delzant type classification theorem for them. The computation methods for their fundamental groups, cohomology groups in general cases, and signatures in four-dimensional cases are also given.
The standard P. A. Smith theory of p-group actions on spheres, disks, and euclidean spaces is extended to the case of p-group actions on tori (i.e., products of circles) and coupled with topological surgery theory to give a complete topological classification, valid in all dimensions, of the locally linear, orientation reversing, involutions on tori with fixed point set of codimension one.
