We present for the first-time the photonuclear cross section of $^{10}$B calculated within the ab-initio No Core Shell Model framework. Realistic two-nucleon (NN) chiral forces up to next-to-next-to-next-order (N3LO), which have been softened by the similarity renormalization group method (SRG) to $λ=2.02$ fm$^{-1}$, were utilized. The electric-dipole response function is calculated using the Lanczos method. The effects of the continuum were accounted for by including neutron escape widths derived from R-matrix theory. The calculated cross section agrees well with experimental data in terms of structure as well as in absolute peak height, $σ_{\rm max}=4.85~{\rm mb}$ at photon energy $ω=23.61~{\rm MeV}$, and integrated cross section $85.36\, {\rm MeV \cdotp mb}$. We test the Brink hypothesis by calculating the electric-dipole response for the first five positive-parity states in $^{10}$B and verify that dipole excitations built upon the ground- and excited states have similar characteristics.
The nuclear reaction induced by photon is one of the important tools in the investigation of atomic nuclei. In the reaction, a target material is bombarded by photons with high-energies in the range of gamma-ray energy range. In the bombarding process, the photons can statistically be absorbed by a nucleus in the target material. Then the excited nucleus can decay by emitting proton, neutron, alpha and light particles or photons. By performing photonuclear reaction on the target, it can be easily investigated low-lying excited states of the nuclei. In the present work, (γ, n) photonuclear reac…
The photonuclear reaction in the multi-GeV region occurs because of the electromagnetic and hadronic interaction. The later originates due to the hadronic fluctuation, i.e., vector meson, of the photon. The total cross section of the reaction is shadowed because of the vector meson nucleus (hadronic) interaction. To estimate it quantitatively, the cross section of the photonuclear reaction was calculated in the low energy region ($\sim 1-3$ GeV) using simple vector meson dominance (SVMD) model, i.e., the low lying vector mesons ($ρ^0$, $ω$ and $ϕ$ mesons) were considered. The nuclear shadowing…
The photonuclear reactions which is induced by high-energetic photon are one of the important type of reactions in the nuclear structure studies. In this reaction, a target material is bombarded by photons with the energies in the range of gamma-ray energy scale and the photons can statistically be absorbed by a nucleus in the target material. In order to get rid of the excess energies of the excited target nuclei, it can first emit protons, neutrons, alphas and light particles according to the separation energy thresholds. After this emitting process, generally an unstable nucleus can be form…
Photonuclear reactions at energies covering the giant dipole resonance (GDR) region are analyzed with an approach based on nuclear photoabsorption followed by the process of competition between light particle evaporation and fission for the excited nucleus. The photoabsorption cross section at energies covering the GDR region is contributed by both the Lorentz type GDR cross section and the quasideuteron cross section. The evaporation-fission process of the compound nucleus is simulated in a Monte-Carlo framework. Photofission reaction cross sections are analyzed in a systematic manner in the …
We discuss the available data for the differential and the total cross section for the photodisintegration of $^3$He and $^3$H and the corresponding inverse reactions below $E_γ= 100$ MeV by comparing with our calculations using realistic $NN$ interactions. The theoretical results agree within the errorbars with the data for the total cross sections. Excellent agreement is achieved for the angular distribution in case of $^3$He, whereas for $^3$H a discrepancy between theory and experiment is found.
Cross sections are calculated for single and double photon exchange in ultraperipheral Pb+Pb collisions at the LHC. The particle production is simulated with the DPMJET event generator. Large cross sections are found for particle production around mid-rapidity making these processes an important background to hadronic nuclear interactions at both the trigger and analysis levels.
In this paper, we provide a procedure to calculate the bremsstrahlung spectrum for virtually any relativistic bare ion with charge 6$e$ or beyond, $Z\ge 6$, in ultraperipheral collisions with target nuclei. We apply the Weizsäcker-Williams method of virtual quanta to model the effect of the distribution of nuclear constituents on the interaction of the ion with the radiation target. This leads to a bremsstrahlung spectrum peaking at $2γ$ times the energy of the giant dipole resonance ($γ$ is the projectile energy in units of its rest energy). A central ingredient in the calculation is the cros…

Since the release of the IAEA Photonuclear Data Libra…
A semimicroscopical approach is applied to describe photoabsorption and partial photonucleon reactions accompanied by the excitation of the giant dipole resonance (GDR). The approach is based on the continuum-RPA (CRPA) with a phenomenological description for the spreading effect. The phenomenological isoscalar part of the nuclear mean field, momentum-independent Landau-Migdal particle-hole interaction, and separable momentum-dependent forces are used as input quantities for the CRPA calculations. The experimental photoabsorption and partial $(n,γ)$-reaction cross sections in the vicinity of t…
There are some discrepancies in the low energy data on the photoabsorption cross section of $^4$He. We calculate the cross section with realistic nuclear forces and explicitly correlated Gaussian functions. Final state interactions and two- and three-body decay channels are taken into account. The cross section is evaluated in two methods: With the complex scaling method the total absorption cross section is obtained up to the rest energy of a pion, and with the microscopic $R$-matrix method both cross sections $^4$He($γ, p$)$^3$H and $^4$He($γ, n$)$^3$He are calculated below 40\,MeV. Both met…
The n-d elastic and breakup cross sections are computed by solving the three-body Faddeev equations for realistic and semi-realistic Nucleon-Nucleon potentials. These cross sections are inserted in the Monte Carlo simulation of the nuclear processes considered in the International Handbook of Evaluated Criticality Safety Benchmark Experiments (ICSBEP). The results obtained using thes ab initio n-d cross sections are compared with those provided by the most renown international libraries.
We show that nucleon electromagnetic structure functions of deep inelastic scattering in Regge-Gribov limit (fixed Q-squared, asymptotically large 1/x and s) can be well described in the two-component (soft + hard) approach. In the concrete model elaborated by authors, the soft part of the virtual photon-nucleon scattering is given by the vector meson dominance, with taking into account the radial excitations of the rho-meson and nondiagonal transitions in meson-nucleon interactions. The hard part is calculated by using the dipole factorization, i.e., the process is considered as the dissociat…
Most searches for ultra-high energy (UHE) astrophysical neutrinos look for radio emission from the electromagnetic and hadronic showers produced in their interactions. The radio frequency spectrum and angular distribution depend on the shower development, so are sensitive to the interaction cross sections. At energies above about 10^{16} eV (in ice), the Landau-Pomeranchuk-Migdal (LPM) effect significantly reduces the cross sections for the two dominant electromagnetic interactions: bremsstrahlung and pair production. At higher energies, above about 10^{20} eV, the photonuclear cross section b…
Several approaches to photonuclear reactions, based on the time-dependent density-functional theory, have been developed recently. The standard linearization leads to the random-phase approximation (RPA) or the quasiparticle-random-phase approximation (QRPA). We have developed a parallelized QRPA computer program for axially deformed nuclei. We also present a feasible approach to the (Q)RPA calculation, that is the finite amplitude method (FAM). We show results of photoabsorption cross sections for deformed nuclei using the QRPA and FAM calculations. Finally, the canonical-basis approach to th…
We investigate cross sections for neutrino-12C exclusive scattering and for muon capture on 12C using wave functions obtained in the ab initio no-core shell model. In our parameter-free calculations with basis spaces up to the 6 hbarOmega we show that realistic nucleon-nucleon interactions, like e.g. the CD-Bonn, under predict the experimental cross sections by more than a factor of two. By including a realistic three-body interaction, Tucson-Melbourne TM'(99), the cross sections are enhanced significantly and a much better agreement with experiment is achieved. At the same time, the TM'(99) in…
Following our previous proposal [1], we construct a class of good "lattice cross sections" (LCSs), from which we could study partonic structure of hadrons from ab initio lattice QCD calculations. These good LCSs, on the one hand, can be calculated directly in lattice QCD, and on the other hand, can be factorized into parton distribution functions (PDFs) with calculable coefficients, in the same way as QCD factorization for factorizable hadronic cross sections. PDFs could be extracted from QCD global analysis of the lattice QCD generated data of LCSs. We also show that proposed functions for la…
The Li7 total photoabsorption cross section is calculated microscopically. As nucleon-nucleon interaction the semi-realistic central AV4' potential with S- and P-wave forces is taken. The interaction of the final 7-nucleon system is fully taken into account via the Lorentz Integral Transform (LIT) method. For the calculation of the LIT we use expansions in hyperspherical harmonics (HH) in conjunction with the HH effective interaction (EIHH) approach. The convergence of the LIT expansion is discussed in detail. The calculated cross section agrees quite well with the available experimental data,…
Total photonuclear absorption cross sections of $^3$H and $^3$He are studied using realistic NN and NNN forces. Final state interactions are fully included. Two NN potential models, the AV14 and the r-space Bonn-A potentials, are considered. For the NNN forces the Urbana-VIII and Tucson-Melbourne models are employed. We find the cross section to be sensitive to nuclear dynamics. Of particular interest in this work is the effect which NNN forces have on the cross section. The addition of NNN forces not only lowers the peak height but increases the cross section beyond 70 MeV by roughly 15%. Cro…

A goal of nuclear theory is to make quantitative predictions of low-energy nuclear observables starting from accurate microscopic internucleon forces. A major element of such an effort is applying unitary transformations to soften the nuclear Hamiltonian and hence accelerate the convergence of ab initio calculations as a function of the model space size. The consistent simultaneous transformation of external operators, however, has been overlooked in applications of the theory, particularly for nonscalar transitions. We study the evolution of the electric dipole operator in the framework of th…
An overview of the ab initio no-core shell model is presented. Recent results for light nuclei obtained with the chiral two-nucleon and three-nucleon interactions are highlighted. Cross section calculations of capture reactions important for astrophysics are discussed. The extension of the ab initio no-core shell model to the description of nuclear reactions by the resonating group method technique is outlined.
We have calculated the fission probabilities for 237-Np, 233,235,238-U, 232-Th, and nat-Pb following the absorption of photons with energies from 68 MeV to 3.77 GeV using the RELDIS Monte-Carlo code. This code implements the cascade-evaporation-fission model of intermediate-energy photonuclear reactions. It includes multiparticle production in photoreactions on intranuclear nucleons, pre-equilibrium emission, and the statistical decay of excited residual nuclei via competition of evaporation, fission, and multifragmentation processes. The calculations show that in the GeV energy region the fis…
The two-body knock-out reaction 4He(e,e'd)d is calculated at various momentum transfers. The full four-nucleon dynamics is taken into account microscopically both in the initial and the final states. As NN interaction the central MT-I/III potential is used. The calculation shows a strong reduction of the coincidence cross section due to the final state interaction. Nonetheless the theoretical results exhibit a considerable overestimation of the experimental cross section at lower momentum transfer. Comparisons with other, less complete, calculations suggest that consideration of a more realist…
We report a leading-order calculation of radiative ${}^{7}\mathrm{Li}$ neutron captures to both the ground and first excited state of ${}^{8}\mathrm{Li}$ in the framework of a low-energy effective field theory (Halo-EFT). Each of the possible final states is treated as a shallow bound state composed of both $n+{}^{7}\mathrm{Li}$ and $n+{}^{7}\mathrm{Li}^{*}$ (core excitation) configurations. The {\it ab initio} variational Monte Carlo method is used to compute the asymptotic normalization coefficients of these bound states, which are then used to fix couplings in our EFT. We calculate the tota…
The four-body equations of Alt, Grassberger and Sandhas are solved for $\nH$ scattering at energies below three-body breakup threshold using various realistic interactions including one derived from chiral perturbation theory. After partial wave decomposition the equations are three-variable integral equations that are solved numerically without any approximations beyond the usual discretization of continuum variables on a finite momentum mesh. Large number of two-, three- and four-nucleon partial waves are considered until the convergence of the observables is obtained. The total $\nH$ cross …
Electromagnetic observables are able to give insight into collective and emergent features in nuclei, including nuclear clustering. These observables also provide strong constraints for ab initio theory, but comparison of these observables between theory and experiment can be difficult due to the lack of convergence for relevant calculated values, such as $E2$ transition strengths. By comparing the ratios of $E2$ transition strengths for mirror transitions, we find that a wide range of ab initio calculations give robust and consistent predictions for this ratio. To experimentally test the vali…
Exclusive vector meson production reactions such as $Au + Au \to Au + Au + V$, where $V=ρ, ω, ϕ$ or $J/ψ$ can proceed through photon-Pomeron and photon-meson interactions. Photons from the electromagnetic field of one nucleus interact coherently with the other nucleus. Photonuclear cross sections are scaled from $γp$ data, and convoluted with the photon spectrum to find the exclusive rates. The cross sections at the RHIC and LHC heavy ion colliders are huge, 10% of the total hadronic cross section at RHIC, and 50% at LHC. These accelerators may be useful as vector meson factories. With iodine …
Recent microscopic and phenomenological calculations of giant dipole resonances for A <= 56 nuclei are presented. The derived photodisintegration cross sections are exhaustively compared to the photonuclear data available to date. An accurate description of the data is found. Our new calculations are also compared with the previous and widely-used estimates of Puget, Stecker and Bredekamp. The present calculations also include all the possible paths down the nuclear chart. The impact on the photodisintegration of ultra-high-energy cosmic rays (UHECR) is illustrated for a Fe source with typical…
The electromagnetic responses obtained from Green's function Monte Carlo (GFMC) calculations are based on realistic treatments of nuclear interactions and currents. The main limitations of this method comes from its nonrelativistic nature and its computational cost, the latter hampering the direct evaluation of the inclusive cross sections as measured by experiments. We extend the applicability of GFMC in the quasielastic region to intermediate momentum transfers by performing the calculations in a reference frame that minimizes nucleon momenta. Additional relativistic effects in the kinematic…
A quantitative and predictive microscopic theoretical framework that can describe reactions induced by $α$ particles ($^4$He nuclei) and heavier projectiles is currently lacking. Such a framework would contribute to reducing uncertainty in the modeling of stellar evolution and nucleosynthesis and provide the basis for achieving a comprehensive understanding of the phenomenon of nuclear clustering (the organization of protons and neutrons into distinct substructures within a nucleus). We have developed an efficient and general configuration-interaction framework for the description of low-energ…
We apply the ab initio no-core shell model/resonating group method approach to calculate the cross sections of the 3H(d,n)4He and 3He(d,p)4He fusion reactions. These are important reactions for the Big Bang nucleosynthesis and the future of energy generation on Earth. Starting from a selected similarity-transformed chiral nucleon-nucleon interaction that accurately describes two-nucleon data, we performed many-body calculations that predict the S-factor of both reactions. Virtual three-body breakup effects are obtained by including excited pseudostates of the deuteron in the calculation. Our r…
We combine a recently developed ab initio many-body approach capable of describing simultaneously both bound and scattering states, the ab initio NCSM/RGM, with an importance truncation scheme for the cluster eigenstate basis and demostrate its applicability to nuclei with mass numbers as high as 17. Using soft similarity renormalization group evolved chiral nucleon-nucleon interactions, we first calculate nucleon-4He phase shifts, cross sections and analyzing power. Next, we investigate nucleon scattering on 7Li, 7Be, 12C and 16O in coupled-channel NCSM/RGM calculations that include low-lying…
We carry out an ab initio calculation of the neutrino flux-folded inclusive cross sections, measured on $^{12}$C by the MiniBooNE and T2K collaborations in the charged-current quasielastic (CCQE) regime. The calculation is based on realistic two- and three-nucleon interactions, and on a realistic nuclear electroweak current with one-and two-nucleon terms that are constructed consistently with these interactions and reproduce low-energy electroweak transitions. Numerically exact quantum Monte Carlo methods are utilized to compute the nuclear weak response functions, by fully retaining many-body…
We compute inclusive electron-nucleus cross sections using ab initio spectral functions of $^4$He and $^{16}$O obtained within the Self Consistent Green's Function approach. The formalism adopted is based on the factorization of the spectral function and the nuclear transition matrix elements. This allows to provide an accurate description of nuclear dynamics and to account for relativistic effects in the interaction vertex. Our calculations use a saturating chiral Hamiltonian in order reproduce the correct nuclear sizes. When final state interactions for the struck particle are accounted for,…
We apply the ab initio no-core shell model/resonating group method (NCSM/RGM) approach to calculate the cross section of the 7Be(p,gamma)8B radiative capture. This reaction is important for understanding the solar neutrino flux. Starting from a selected similarity-transformed chiral nucleon-nucleon interaction that accurately describes two-nucleon data, we performed parameter-free many-body calculations that simultaneously predict both the normalization and the shape of the S-factor. We study the dependence on the number of 7Be eigenstates included in the coupled-channel equations and on the s…
The Lorentz Integral Transform (LIT) method is reformulated via the Lanczos algorithm both for inclusive and exclusive reactions. The new technique is tested for the total photoabsorption cross section of 3H and 4He. Due to the rapid convergence of the algorithm one has a decrease in cpu time by two orders of magnitude, but at the same time an excellent agreement with the results of a conventional LIT calculation. The present work opens up the possibility of ab initio calculations for inclusive and exclusive processes for A greater equal 6 with inclusion of complete final state interactions.
We extend the ab initio no-core shell model/resonating-group method to include three-nucleon (3N) interactions for the description of nucleon-nucleus collisions. We outline the formalism, give algebraic expressions for the 3N-force integration kernels, and discuss computational aspects of two alternative implementations. The extended theoretical framework is then applied to nucleon-4He scattering using similarity-renormalization-group (SRG) evolved nucleon-nucleon plus three-nucleon potentials derived from chiral effective field theory. We analyze the convergence properties of the calculated p…
An ab initio potential for the interaction of the neutral helium atom with antiprotons and protons is calculated using the Born-Oppenheimer approximation. Using this potential, the annihilation cross section for antiprotons in the energy range 0.01 microvolt to 1 eV is calculated.
Quasielastic neutrino scattering is an important aspect of the experimental program to study fundamental neutrino properties including neutrino masses, mixing angles, the mass hierarchy and CP-violating phase. Proper interpretation of the experiments requires reliable theoretical calculations of neutrino-nucleus scattering. In this paper we present calculations of response functions and cross sections by neutral-current scattering of neutrinos off $^{12}$C. These calculations are based on realistic treatments of nuclear interactions and currents, the latter including the axial-, vector-, and v…
