Most searches for ultra-high energy (UHE) astrophysical neutrinos look for radio emission from the electromagnetic and hadronic showers produced in their interactions. The radio frequency spectrum and angular distribution depend on the shower development, so are sensitive to the interaction cross sections. At energies above about 10^{16} eV (in ice), the Landau-Pomeranchuk-Migdal (LPM) effect significantly reduces the cross sections for the two dominant electromagnetic interactions: bremsstrahlung and pair production. At higher energies, above about 10^{20} eV, the photonuclear cross section becomes larger than that for pair production, and direct pair production and electronuclear interactions become dominant over bremsstrahlung. The electron interaction length reaches a maximum around 10^{21} eV, and then decreases slowly as the electron energy increases further. In this regime, the growth in the photon cross section and electron energy loss moderates the rise in nu_e shower length, which rises from ~10 m at 10^{16} eV to ~50 m at 10^{19} eV and ~100 m at 10^{20} eV, but only to ~1 km at 10^{24} eV. In contrast, without photonuclear and electronuclear interactions, the shower length would be over 10 km at 10^{24} eV.
The photon emission rates from the quark gluon plasma have been studied considering LPM suppression effects. The integral equation for the transverse vector function (f(p)) that consists of multiple scattering effects has been solved using self-consistent iterations method. Empirical fits to the peak positions of the distributions from iteration method have been obtained for bremsstrahlung and annihilation with scattering (AWS) processes. The variational approach for f(p) calculation has been simplified considerably making some assumptions. Using this method, the photon emission rates at finit…
An analysis of the influence of the Landau-Migdal-Pomeranchuk (LPM) effect on the development of air showers initiated by astroparticles is presented. The theory of Migdal is studied and compared with other theoretical methods, particularly the Blankenbecler and Drell approach. By means of realistic computer simulations and using algorithms that emulate Migdal's theory, including also the so-called dielectric suppression, we study the behavior of the relevant observables in the case of ultra-high energy primaries. We find that the LPM effect can significantly modify the development of high ene…
The LPM suppression of photon emission rates from the quark gluon plasma have been studied at different physical conditions of the plasma given by temperature and chemical potentials. The integral equation for the transverse vector function (f(p_t)) consisting of multiple scattering effects is solved for the parameter set {p,k,kappa,T}, for bremsstrahlung and AWS processes. The peak positions of these distributions depend only on the dynamical variable x=(T/kappa)|1/p-1/(p+k)|. Integration over these distributions multiplied by x^2 factor also depends on this variable x,leading to a unique glob…
The suppression of photon bremsstrahlung due to a variety of in-medium effects is discussed. Different electrodynamic suppression effects are discussed, and compared with the related color analogs. Higher order effects are considered, and found to be important. Data from SLAC E-146 is discussed, and compared with theory. The effect of finite thickness targets is emphasized, since nuclear size is such an important limiting factor for the chromodynamics effects.
The photon emission intensity spectrum is calculated taking into account influence of multiple scattering (the LPM effect) under conditions of recent CERN SPS experiment. It is shown that the theory quite satisfactory describes data. The integral characteristics: the radiation length and total probability of photon emission are analyzed under influence of the LPM effect, and the asymptotic expansions of these characteristics are derived.
The non-abelian analog of the Landau-Pomeranchuk-Migdal effect is investigated in perturbative QCD. Extending our previous studies, the suppression of induced soft bremsstrahlung due to multiple scatterings of quarks in the spinor representation is considered. The effective formation time of gluon radiation due to the color interference is shown to depend on the color representation of the emitting parton, and an improved formula for the radiative energy loss is derived that interpolates between the factorization and Bethe-Heitler limits.
The spectral distribution of electron-positron pair created by photon and the spectral distribution of photons radiated from high-energy electron in an oriented single crystal is calculated using the method which permits inseparable consideration both of the coherent and incoherent mechanisms of two relevant processes. The method includes the action of field of axis (or plane) as well as the multiple scattering of radiating electron or particles of the created pair (the Landau-Pomeranchuk-Migdal (LPM) effect). The influence of scattering on the coherent mechanism and the influence of field on …
The process of radiation from high-energy electron and electron-positron pair production by a photon in oriented single crystal is considered using the method which permits inseparable consideration of both coherent and incoherent mechanisms of photon emission from an electron and of pair creation by a photon and includes the action of field of axis (or plane) as well as the multiple scattering of radiating electron or particles of the created pair (the Landau-Pomeranchuk-Migdal (LPM) effect). The total intensity of radiation and total probability pair creation are calculated. The theory, wher…
The splitting processes of bremsstrahlung and pair production in a medium are coherent over large distances in the very high energy limit, which leads to a suppression known as the Landau-Pomeranchuk-Migdal (LPM) effect. We continue study of the case when the coherence lengths (formation lengths) of two consecutive splitting processes overlap, avoiding soft-emission approximations. Previous work made a ``nearly-complete'' calculation of the effect of overlapping formation times on gluonic splittings such as $g \to gg \to ggg$ (with simplifying assumptions such as an infinite QCD medium and the…
We study the production of bottom quarks in $pp$ collisions at Large Hadron Collider energies using previously developed parton cascade model to explore the impact of Landau Pomeranchuk Midgal (LPM) effect on their dynamics. In contrast to the case for charm quarks reported recently, we find only a marginal impact of the suppression of multiple scatterings of partons due to the LPM effect on their production. It is felt that this happens as they are only produced in very hard collisions.
The observation of earth skimming neutrinos has been proposed as a rather sensitive method to detect ultra-high energy (UHE) cosmic neutrinos. Energetic cosmic neutrinos can interact inside the rock and produce leptons via a charged current interaction. In the case of an incoming electron neutrino undergoing a charged current interaction, the produced UHE electron will induce an underground electromagnetic shower. At high energy (above 7.7 TeV in standard rock), such showers are subject to LPM (Landau, Pomeranchuk and Migdal) suppression of the radiative processes cross sections (bremsstrahlun…

The process of radiation from high-energy electron in oriented single crystal is considered using the method which permits inseparable consideration of both coherent and incoherent mechanisms of photon emission. The total intensity of radiation is calculated. The theory, where the energy loss of projectile has to be taken into account, agrees quite satisfactory with available CERN data. It is shown that the influence of multiple scattering on radiation process is suppressed due to action of crystal field.
Variational method has been applied to estimate Landau-Pomeranchuk-Migdal (LPM) effects on virtual photon emission from the quark gluon plasma as a function of photon mass. The variational method was well tested for the LPM effects in real photon emission by Arnold et. al., For virtual photons, LPM effects arising from multiple scatterings of quarks in the plasma are determined by the integral equations for the transverse vector function (${\bf \tilde{f}(\tilde{p}_\perp)}$) and the longitudinal function ($\tilde{g}({\bf \tilde{p}_\perp})$). We extended the variational method to solve these tra…
The new approach is developed for study of electron-positron pair production by a photon in oriented single crystal. It permits indivisible consideration of both coherent and incoherent mechanisms of pair creation and includes the action of field of axis (or plane) as well as the multiple scattering of particles of the created pair (the Landau-Pomeranchuk-Migdal (LPM) effect). From obtained integral probability of pair creation, it follows that multiple scattering appears only for relatively low energy of photon, while at higher photon energy the field action excludes the LPM effect. The found…
We study the longitudinal development of hadronic showers in ice for energies up to 100 EeV and its implications for radio and optical Cherenkov emission. A small fraction of showers induced by primaries of energy above 1 EeV is shown to display the characteristic elongation associated to the Landau Pomeranchuck Migdal (LPM) effect. The rest look like ordinary showers because the highest energy $π^0$'s interact instead of decaying in two photons. The LPM effect observed in this fraction of the showers is mainly due to $η$ and $η'$ production and decay. We give parameterizations for the total a…
Soft photon and gluon radiation off a fast quark propagating through nuclear matter is discussed. The close anology between the Landau - Pomeranchuk - Migdal (LPM) effect in QED and the emission of soft gluons, suggested in ref. \cite{BDPS} for ``hot" plasma, is confirmed and the relation between Mueller's approach and traditional calculations is established. It is shown that perturbative QCD can be applied to take into account the LPM coherent suppression both for photon and gluon induced radiation. The formulae for the photon and gluon radiation densities are presented.
High-energy Coulomb corrections (CCs) to some quantities of the quantum Migdal theory of the Landau-Pomeranchuk-Migdal (LPM) effect are obtained analytically and numerically for the regimes of small and strong LPM suppression on the basis of a refined Moliere multiple scattering theory. Numerical calculations are presented in the ranges of the nuclear charge number Z of a scatterer from 6 to 92 and the expansion parameter B of Moliere from 4.5 to 8.5. It is shown that the relative CC to the spectral bremsstrahlung rate can reach a value of the order of -19% in the ranges considered and must be…
We recently proposed an empirical approach for the Landau-Pomeranchuk-Migdal (LPM) effects in photon emission from the quark gluon plasma as a function of photon mass. This approach was based on Generalized Emission Functions (GEF) for photon emission, derived at a fixed temperature and strong coupling constant. In the present work, we have extended the LPM calculations for several temperatures and strong coupling strengths. The integral equations for (${\bf \tilde{f}(\tilde{p}_\perp)}$) and ($\tilde{g}({\bf \tilde{p}_\perp})$) are solved by the iterations method for the variable set \{$p_0,q_…
The features of electromagnetic processes are considered which connected with finite size of space region in which final particles (photon, electron-positron pair) are formed. The longitudinal dimension of the region is known as the formation length. If some external agent is acting on an electron while traveling this distance the emission process can be disrupted. There are different agents: multiple scattering of projectile, polarization of a medium, action of external fields, etc. The theory of radiation under influence of the multiple scattering, the Landau-Pomeranchuk-Migdal (LPM) effect,…
We calculate the production of dileptons and photons in the presence of a nontrivial Polyakov loop in QCD. This is applicable to the semi-Quark Gluon Plasma (QGP), at temperatures above but near the critical temperature for deconfinement. The Polyakov loop is small in the semi-QGP, and near unity in the perturbative QGP. Working to leading order in the coupling constant of QCD, we find that there is a mild enhancement, ~ 20%, for dilepton production in the semi-QGP over that in the perturbative QGP. In contrast, we find that photon production is strongly suppressed in the semi-QGP, by about an…
The bremsstrahlung of an electron and $e^{-}e^{+}$-pair creation by a photon in a medium is considered in high-energy region, where influence of the multiple scattering on the processes (the Landau-Pomeranchuk-Migdal (LPM) effect) becomes essential. The integral characteristics: the radiation length and the total probability of radiation and pair photoproduction are analyzed under influence of the LPM effect.
Bremsstrahlung of photons from highly relativistic electrons is investigated. The cross section of the processes, which is suppressed due to a multiple scattering of an emitting electron in dense media (LPM effect) and due to photon interaction with electrons of a medium, is calculated with an accuracy up to "next to leading logarithm" and with the Coulomb corrections taken into account. Making allowances for a multiple scattering and a polarization of a medium an analysis of radiation on a target boundary is carried out. The method of consideration of radiation in a thin target under influenc…

The cross section of bremsstrahlung from high-energy electron suppressed due to the multiple scattering of an emitting electron in a dense media (the LPM effect) is discussed. Development of the LPM effect theory is outlined. For the target of finite thickness one has to include boundary photon radiation as well as the interference effects. The importance of multiphoton effects is emphasized. Comparison of theory with SLAC data is presented.
We compute the photon production of a QCD plasma at leading order in the strong coupling with a finite baryon chemical potential. Our approach starts from the real time formalism of finite temperature field theory. We identify the class of diagrams contributing at leading order when a finite chemical potential is added and resum them to perform a full treatment of the LPM effect similar to the one performed by Arnold, Moore, and Yaffe at zero chemical potential. Our results show that the contribution of $2\mapsto 3$ and $3\mapsto 2$ processes grows as the chemical potential grows.
We investigate the photon emission from the electrosphere of a quark star. It is shown that at temperatures T\sim 0.1-1 MeV the dominating mechanism is the bremsstrahlung due to bending of electron trajectories in the mean Coulomb field of the electrosphere. The radiated energy for this mechanism is much larger than that for the Bethe-Heitler bremsstrahlung. The energy flux from the mean field bremsstrahlung exceeds the one from the tunnel e^{+}e^{-} pair creation as well. We demonstrate that the LPM suppression of the photon emission is negligible.
NLO and LPM-resummed computations of thermal dilepton production from a hot QCD plasma are reviewed. An interpolation applicable for all positive photon invariant masses is presented, and possibilities for comparisons with lattice and experimental data are pointed out.
The Landau, Pomeranchuk, Migdal (LPM) effect (suppression of the bremsstrahlung from high energy electron due to a multiple scattering of an emitting electron in dense media) is considered for the case when thickness of a target is of the order or less than the formation length of radiation. The effects of the polarization of a medium and transition radiation are taken into account as well. Qualitative picture of the phenomenon is discussed in detail. Comparison with recent experimental data is carried out.

The spectral distribution of positron created by photon and the spectral distribution of photons radiated from electron in an oriented single crystal of intermediate thickness is calculated at intermediate energies. The energy loss of charged particles as well as photon absorption are taken into account. The used basic probabilities of processes include the action of field of axis as well as the multiple scattering of radiating electron or particles of the created pair (the Landau-Pomeranchuk-Migdal (LPM) effect)
At very high energies, the Landau-Pomeranchuk-Migdal effect reduces the cross sections for electron bremsstrahlung and photon $e^+e^-$ pair production. The fractional electron energy loss and pair production cross sections drop as the energy increases. In contrast, the cross sections for photonuclear interactions grow with energy. In solids and liquids, at energies above $10^{20}$ eV, photonuclear reactions dominate, and showers that originate as photons or electrons quickly become hadronic showers. These electron-initiated hadronic showers are much shorter (due to the absence of the LPM effec…
Azimuthal correlations of charged hadrons with direct-photon ($γ_{dir}$) and neutral-pion ($π^{0}$) trigger particles are analyzed in central Au+Au and minimum-bias $p+p$ collisions at $\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}} = 200$ GeV in the STAR experiment. The charged-hadron per-trigger yields at mid-rapidity from central Au+Au collisions are compared with $p+p$ collisions to quantify the suppression in Au+Au collisions. The suppression of the away-side associated-particle yields per $γ_{dir}$ trigger is independent of the transverse momentum of the trigger particle ($p_{T}^{\mathrm{trig}}$), whereas the suppres…
Within the next-to-leading order (NLO) perturbative QCD (pQCD) parton model, suppression of away-side hadron spectra associated with a high $p_{T}$ photon due to parton energy loss is studied in high-energy heavy-ion collisions. Dictated by the shape of the $γ$-associated jet spectrum in NLO pQCD, hadron spectra at large $z_T=p_T^{h}/p_T^γ \stackrel{>}{\sim} 1$ are more sensitive to parton energy loss and therefore are dominated by surface emission of $γ$-associated jets, whereas small $z_{T}$ hadrons mainly come from fragmentation of jets with reduced energy which is controlled by the volume …
In 1953, Ter-Mikaelian predicted that the bremsstrahlung of low energy photons in a medium is suppressed because of interactions between the produced photon and the electrons in the medium. This suppression occurs because the emission takes place over on a long distance scale, allowing for destructive interference between different instantaneous photon emission amplitudes. We present here measurements of bremsstrahlung cross sections of 200 keV to 20 MeV photons produced by 8 and 25 GeV electrons in carbon and gold targets. Our data shows that dielectric suppression occurs at the predicted lev…
We show that the single, non-photonic electron nuclear modification factor $R_{AA}^e$ is affected by the thermal enhancement of the heavy-baryon to heavy-meson ratio in relativistic heavy-ion collisions with respect to proton-proton collisions. We make use of the dynamical quark recombination model to compute such ratio and show that this produces a sizable suppression factor for $R_{AA}^e$ at intermediate transverse momenta. We argue that such suppression factor needs to be considered, in addition to the energy loss contribution, in calculations of $R_{AA}^e$
We report new results of $γ_{dir}$+hadron and $π^{0}$+hadron azimuthal correlations as a measure of the away-side jet-like correlated yields in central Au+Au and p+p collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 200 GeV in the STAR experiment from years 2011 and 2009 of data taking, respectively. The charged-hadron per-trigger yields at mid-rapidity $(|η| < 1)$ and for transverse momenta $p_{T}^{assoc} > 1.2$ ~GeV/$c$ associated with $γ_{dir}$~ and $π^{0}$~(for triggers $|η| < $0.9, 12 $< p_{T}^{trig} <$ 20 GeV/$c$) in central Au+Au collisions are compared with p+p collisions. The $z_{T}$ ($= \frac{p_{T}^{a…
We give a general parameterization of the Lambda_b --> Lambda(1520) gamma decay amplitude, applicable to any strange isosinglet spin-3/2 baryon, and calculate the branching fraction and helicity amplitudes. Large-energy form factor relations are worked out, and it is shown that the helicity-3/2 amplitudes vanish at lowest order in soft-collinear effective theory (SCET). The suppression can be tested experimentally at the LHC and elsewhere, thus providing a benchmark for SCET. We apply the results to assess the experimental reach for a possible wrong-helicity b --> s gamma dipole coupling in La…
A search for the lepton-flavor violating $μ^{+}\rightarrow e^{+}γ$ decay using polarized muons is revisited in terms of suppression of the serious background arising from an accidental coincidence between a $e^{+}$ in the normal muon decay and a high energy photon in the radiative muon decay, $μ^{+} \rightarrow e^{+} ν\overlineν γ$. It is found that a high energy photon in $μ^{+} \rightarrow e^{+} ν\overlineν γ$ decay is preferentially emitted parallel to the muon spin direction, similarly to $e^{+}$ in the normal muon decay. The selective measurements of either $e^{+}$s or photons moving anti…
The effects of non-zero baryonic chemical potential on the drag and diffusion coefficients of heavy quarks propagating through a baryon rich quark gluon plasma have been studied. The nuclear suppression factor, $R_{\mathrm AA}$ for non-photonic single electron spectra resulting from the semileptonic decays of hadrons containing heavy flavours have been evaluated for low energy collisions. The role of non-zero baryonic chemical potential on $R_{\mathrm AA}$ has been highlighted.
We examine whether it is possible to simultaneously describe the experimental data from RHIC and LHC on nuclear suppression of light hadrons and non-photonic single electrons in the pQCD picture of parton energy loss. We perform calculations accounting for both radiative and collisional energy loss. We show that once the coupling constant is fixed from comparison with data on the nuclear modification factor for light hadrons it gives a satisfactory agreement with data on the electron R_{AA} and azimuthal anisotropy v_2. Our results show that the collisional mechanism is only of marginal signif…
We calculate isolated photon production at forward rapidities in proton-nucleus collisions in the Color Glass Condensate framework. Our calculation uses dipole cross sections solved from the running coupling Balitsky-Kovchegov equation with an initial condition fit to deep inelastic scattering data and extended to nuclei with an optical Glauber procedure that introduces no additional parameters beyond the basic nuclear geometry. We present predictions for future forward RHIC and LHC measurements. The predictions are also compared to updated results for the nuclear modification factors for pion…
We perform a phenomenological analysis of the $\cos 2 ϕ$ azimuthal asymmetry in virtual photon plus jet production induced by the linear polarization of gluons in unpolarized $pA$ collisions. Although the linearly polarized gluon distribution becomes maximal at small $x$, TMD evolutionleads to a Sudakov suppression of the asymmetry with increasing invariant mass of the $γ^*$-jet pair. Employing a small-$x$ model input distribution, the asymmetry is found to be strongly suppressed under TMD evolution, but still remains sufficiently large to be measurable in the typical kinematical region access…
We study the suppression of the small-scale power spectrum due to the decay of charged matter to dark matter prior to recombination. Prior to decay, the charged particles couple to the photon-baryon fluid and participate in its acoustic oscillations. However, after decaying to neutral dark matter the photon-baryon fluid is coupled only gravitationally to the newly-created dark matter. This generically leads to suppression of power on length scales that enter the horizon prior to decay. For decay times of approximately 3.5 years this leads to suppression of power on subgalactic scales, bringing…
We propose a modification of the equivalent photon approximation (EPA) for processes which involve the parton content of the photon, to take into account the suppression of the photonic parton fluxes due to the virtuality of the photon. We present simple, physically motivated ansätze to model this suppression and show that even though the parton content of the electron no longer factorizes into an electron flux function and a photon structure function, it is still possible to express it as a single integral. We also show that for the TRISTAN experiments its effect can be numerically of the sam…
Predicted two-photon Higgs production with heavy ions at LHC is shown to be reduced due to the large Coulomb dissociation cross section. Incorporating the effect of dissociation reduces the production of a 100 GeV Higgs by about a factor of three compared to rates in the literature calculated without this effect.
We study the effect of interference between the Standard Model Higgs boson resonance and the continuum background in the process gamma gamma -> H -> b b-bar at a photon collider. Taking into account virtual gluon exchange between the final-state quarks, we calculate the leading corrections to the height of the resonance for the case of a light (m_H < 160 GeV) Higgs boson. We find that the interference is destructive and around 0.1--0.2% of the peak height, depending on the mass of the Higgs and the scattering angle. This suppression is smaller by an order of magnitude than the anticipated expe…
The RHIC experiments have measured the nuclear modification factor R_AA of non-photonic electrons in Au+Au collisions at sqrt(s) = 200 GeV. This R_AA exhibits a large suppression for pt > 2 GeV/c which is commonly attributed to heavy-quark energy loss. It is expected that the heavy-quark radiative energy loss is smaller than the light quark one because of the so-called dead-cone effect. An enhancement of the charm baryon yield with respect to the charm meson yield, as it is observed for light and strange hadrons, can explain part of the suppression. This phenomenon has been put forward in a pr…
We study the process γγ->h->bb_bar at ILC as a probe of different little Higgs models, including the simplest little Higgs model (SLH), the littlest Higgs model (LH), and two types of littlest Higgs models with T-parity (LHT-I, LHT-II). Compared with the Standard Model (SM) prediction, the production rate is found to be sizably altered in these little Higgs models and, more interestingly, different models give different predictions. We find that the production rate can be possibly enhanced only in the LHT-II for some part of the parameter space, while in all other cases the rate is suppressed.…
The standard model prediction for the $B\to X_{s,d}γ$ decay amplitude with a right-handed photon is believed to be tiny, suppressed by $m_{s,d}/m_b$, compared to the amplitude with a left-handed photon. We show that this suppression is fictitious: in inclusive decays, the ratio of these two amplitudes is only suppressed by $g_s/(4π)$, and in exclusive decays by $Λ_{QCD}/m_b$. The suppression is not stronger in $B\to X_dγ$ decays than it is in $B\to X_sγ$. We estimate that the time dependent CP asymmetries in $B\to K^*γ$, $ργ$, $K_Sπ^0γ$, and $π^+π^-γ$ are of order 0.1 and that they have signif…
The hard photon productions from bremsstrahlung and annihilation with scattering that arise at two loop level are estimated from a chemically non-equilibrated quark gluon plasma using the frame work of thermal field theory. Although, the rate of photon production is suppressed due to unsaturated phase space, the above suppression is relatively smaller than expected due to an additional collinear enhancement (arise due to decrease in thermal quark mass) as compared to it's equilibrium counterpart. Interestingly, unlike the one loop case, the reduction in the two loop processes are found to be i…
