We study the fate of the Ising model and its universal properties when driven by a rapid periodic drive and weakly coupled to a bath at equilibrium. The far from equilibrium steady-state regime of the system is accessed by means of a Floquet mean field approach. We show that, depending on the details of the bath, the drive can strongly renormalize the critical temperature to higher temperatures, modify the critical exponents, or even change the nature of the phase transition from second to first order after the emergence of a tricritical point. Moreover, by judiciously selecting the frequency of the field and by engineering the spectrum of the bath, one can drive a ferromagnetic Hamiltonian to an antiferromagnetically ordered phase and vice-versa.
We study the Kibble-Zurek mechanism in the transverse Ising chain coupled to a dissipative boson bath, making use of a new numerical method with the infinite time evolving block decimation combined with the discrete-time path integral. We first show the ground-state phase diagram and confirm that a quantum phase transition takes place in the presence of the system-bath coupling. Then we present the time dependence of the energy expectation value of the spin Hamiltonian and the scaling of the kink density with respect to the time period over which the spin Hamiltonian crosses a quantum phase tr…
We analyze theoretically the many-body dynamics of a dissipative Ising model in a transverse field using a variational approach. We find that the steady state phase diagram is substantially modified compared to its equilibrium counterpart, including the appearance of a multicritical point belonging to a different universality class. Building on our variational analysis, we establish a field-theoretical treatment corresponding to a dissipative variant of a Ginzburg-Landau theory, which allows us to compute the upper critical dimension of the system. Finally, we present a possible experimental r…
We consider a one-dimensional Ising model in a transverse magnetic field coupled to a dissipative heat bath. The phase diagram and the critical exponents are determined from extensive Monte Carlo simulations. It is shown that the character of the quantum phase transition is radically altered from the corresponding non-dissipative model and the double-well coupled to a dissipative heat bath with linear friction. Spatial couplings and the dissipative dynamics combine to form a new quantum criticality.
The dynamical critical exponent $z$ is a fundamental quantity in characterizing quantum criticality, and it is well known that the presence of dissipation in a quantum model has significant impact on the value of $z$. Studying quantum Ising spin models using Monte Carlo methods, we estimate the dynamical critical exponent $z$ and the correlation length exponent $ν$ for different forms of dissipation. For a two-dimensional quantum Ising model with Ohmic site dissipation, we find $z \approx 2$ as for the corresponding one-dimensional case, whereas for a one-dimensional quantum Ising model with O…
Fluctuation-dissipation relations (FDRs) and time-reversal symmetry (TRS), two pillars of statistical mechanics, are both broken in generic driven-dissipative systems. These systems rather lead to non-equilibrium steady states far from thermal equilibrium. Driven-dissipative Ising-type models, however, are widely believed to exhibit effective thermal critical behavior near their phase transitions. Contrary to this picture, we show that both the FDR and TRS are broken even macroscopically at, or near, criticality. This is shown by inspecting different observables, both even and odd operators un…
We investigate the critical behavior, both in space and time, of the wetting interface within the coexistence region around the first-order phase transition of a fully-connected quantum Ising model in slab geometry. For that, we employ the Lindblad master equation formalism in which temperature is inherited by the coupling to a dissipative bath, rather than being a functional parameter as in the conventional Cahn's free energy. Lindblad's approach gives not only access to the dissipative dynamics and steady-state configuration of the quantum wetting interface throughout the whole phase diagram…
Motivated in part by quantum criticality in dissipative Kondo systems, we revisit the finite-size scaling of a classical Ising chain with 1/r^{2-epsilon} interactions. For 1/2<epsilon<1, the scaling of the dynamical spin susceptibility is sensitive to the degree of "winding" of the interaction under periodic boundary conditions. Infinite winding yields the expected mean-field behavior, whereas without any winding the scaling is of an interacting omega/T form. The contrast with the behavior of the Bose-Fermi Kondo model suggests a breakdown of a mapping from the quantum model to a classical one…
We study the zero temperature static properties of dissipative ensembles of quantum Ising spins arranged on periodic one dimensional finite clusters and on an infinite chain. The spins interact ferro-magnetically with nearest-neighbour pure and random couplings. They are subject to a transverse field and coupled to an Ohmic bath of quantum harmonic oscillators. We analyze the coupled system using Monte Carlo simulations of the classical two-dimensional counterpart model. The coupling to the bath enhances the extent of the ordered phase, as found in mean-field spin-glasses. In the case of finit…
The competition between interactions and dissipative processes in a quantum many-body system can drive phase transitions of different order. Exploiting a combination of cluster methods and quantum trajectories, we show how the systematic inclusion of (classical and quantum) nonlocal correlations at increasing distances is crucial to determine the structure of the phase diagram, as well as the nature of the transitions in strongly interacting spin systems. In practice, we focus on the paradigmatic dissipative quantum Ising model: in contrast to the non-dissipative case, its phase diagram is sti…
We use Monte Carlo simulations to study chains of Ising- and XY-spins with dissipation coupling to the site variables. The phase diagram and critical exponents of the dissipative Ising chain in a transverse magnetic field have been computed previously, and here we consider a universal ratio of susceptibilities. We furthermore present the phase diagram and exponents of the dissipative XY-chain, which exhibits a second order phase transition. All our results compare well with the predictions from a dissipative $ϕ^4$ field theory.
Driven quantum systems coupled to an environment typically exhibit effectively thermal behavior with relaxational dynamics near criticality. However, a different qualitative behavior might be expected in the weakly dissipative limit due to the competition between coherent dynamics and weak dissipation. In this work, we investigate a driven-dissipative infinite-range Ising model in the presence of individual atomic dissipation, a model that emerges from the paradigmatic open Dicke model in the large-detuning limit. We show that the system undergoes a dynamical crossover from relaxational dynami…
We employ the concept of a dynamical, activity order parameter to study the Ising model in a transverse magnetic field coupled to a Markovian bath. For a certain range of values of the spin-spin coupling, magnetic field and dissipation rate, we identify a first order dynamical phase transition between active and inactive {\em dynamical phases}. We demonstrate that dynamical phase-coexistence becomes manifest in an intermittent behavior of the bath quanta emission. Moreover, we establish the connection between the dynamical order parameter that quantifies the activity, and the longitudinal magn…
We study the decoherence dynamics of a quantum Ising lattice of finite size with a transverse dissipative interaction, namely the coupling with the bath is assumed perpendicular to the direction of the spins interaction and parallel to the external transverse magnetic field. In the limit of small transverse field, the eigenstates and spectrum are obtained by a strong coupling expansion, from which we derive the Lindblad equation in the Markovian limit. At temperature lower than the energy gap and for weak dissipation, the decoherence dynamics can be restricted to take only the two degenerate g…
We investigate the critical dissipation of the double-well quantum mechanics. We adopt two-state approximation to define effective Ising models and apply the block decimation renormalization group and the finite range scaling method recently proposed for the long range Ising model. We briefly report the numerical results of the critical dissipation for various model parameters.
We study a quantum Ising chain with tailored bulk dissipation, which can be mapped onto a non-Hermitian Ashkin-Teller model. By exploiting the Kohmoto-den Nijs-Kadanoff transformation, we further map it to a staggered XXZ spin chain with pure-imaginary anisotropy parameters. This allows us to study the eigenstates of the original Liouvillian in great detail. We show that the steady state in each parity sector is a completely mixed state. The uniqueness of each is proved rigorously. We then study the decay modes on the self-dual line corresponding to the uniform XXZ chain and obtain an exact fo…
Driven-dissipative many-body systems are difficult to analyze analytically due to their non-equilibrium dynamics, dissipation and many-body interactions. In this paper, we consider a driven-dissipative infinite-range Ising model with local spontaneous emission, which naturally emerges from the open Dicke model in the large-detuning limit. Utilizing an adaptation of the Suzuki-Trotter quantum-to-classical mapping, we develop an exact field-theoretical analysis and a diagrammatic representation of the spin model that can be understood from a simple scattering picture. With this representation, w…
We investigate the dissipative dynamics yielded by the Lindblad equation within the coexistence region around a first order phase transition. In particular, we consider an exactly-solvable fullyconnected quantum Ising model with n-spin exchange (n > 2) - the prototype of quantum first order phase transitions - and several variants of the Lindblad equations. We show that physically sound results, including exotic non-equilibrium phenomena like the Mpemba effect, can be obtained only when the Lindblad equation involves jump operators defined for each of the coexisting phases, whether stable or m…
We introduce a solvable stochastic model inspired by granular gases for driven dissipative systems. We characterize far from equilibrium steady states of such systems through the non-Boltzmann energy distribution and compare different measures of effective temperatures. As an example we demonstrate that fluctuation-dissipation relations hold, however with an effective temperature differing from the effective temperature defined from the average energy.
We study the critical properties of finite-dimensional dissipative quantum spin systems with uniform ferromagnetic interactions. Starting from the transverse-field Ising model coupled to a bath of harmonic oscillators with Ohmic spectral density, we generalize its classical representation to classical spin systems with $O(n)$ symmetry and then take the large-$n$ limit to reduce the system to the spherical model. The exact solution to the resulting spherical model with long-range interactions along the imaginary-time axis shows a phase transition with static critical exponents coinciding with t…
We employ Monte Carlo simulations to study the non-equilibrium relaxation of driven Ising lattice gases in two dimensions. Whereas the temporal scaling of the density auto-correlation function in the non-equilibrium steady state does not allow a precise measurement of the critical exponents, these can be accurately determined from the aging scaling of the two-time auto-correlations and the order parameter evolution following a quench to the critical point. We obtain excellent agreement with renormalization group predictions based on the standard Langevin representation of driven Ising lattice …
We study the dynamics of dissipative spin lattices with power-law interactions, realized via few-level atoms driven by coherent laser-coupling and decoherence processes. Using Monte-Carlo simulations, we determine the phase diagram in the steady state and analyze the dynamics of its generation. As opposed to mean-field predictions and nearest-neighbour models there is no phase transition to long-range ordered phases for realistic interactions and resonant driving. However, for finite laser detunings, we demonstrate the emergence of crystalline order with a vanishing dissipative gap. Although t…
A system far from equilibrium is characterized by unconventional many-body dynamical effects, which can lead to anomalous density fluctuations and mass transport. Interestingly, these structural and dynamic features often emerge simultaneously in driven dissipative systems. Here we seek an origin of their co-existence by numerical simulations of a two-dimensional driven granular gas. We reveal a causal link between superdiffusive transport and giant density fluctuations. The kinetic dissipation upon particle collisions depends on the relative velocity of colliding particles, and is responsible…
We study the nonequilibrium steady-state of interacting photons in cavity arrays as described by the driven-dissipative Bose-Hubbard and spin-$1/2$ XY model. For this purpose, we develop a self-consistent expansion in the inverse coordination number of the array ($\sim 1/z$) to solve the Lindblad master equation of these systems beyond the mean-field approximation. Our formalism is compared and benchmarked with exact numerical methods for small systems based on an exact diagonalization of the Liouvillian and a recently developed corner-space renormalization technique. We then apply this method…
Conservation laws constrain the stationary state statistics of driven dissipative systems because the average flux of a conserved quantity between driving and dissipation scales should be constant. This requirement leads to a universal scaling law for flux-measuring correlation functions, which generalizes the 4/5-th law of Navier-Stokes turbulence. We demonstrate the utility of this simple idea by deriving new exact scaling relations for models of aggregating particle systems in the fluctuation-dominated regime and for energy and wave action cascades in models of strong wave turbulence.
We study purely dissipative relaxational dynamics in the three-dimensional Ising universality class. To this end, we simulate the improved Blume-Capel model on the simple cubic lattice by using local algorithms. We perform a finite size scaling analysis of the integrated autocorrelation time of the magnetic susceptibility in equilibrium at the critical point. We obtain $z=2.0245(15)$ for the dynamic critical exponent. As a complement, fully magnetized configurations are suddenly quenched to the critical temperature, giving consistent results for the dynamic critical exponent. Furthermore, our …
If quenched to zero temperature, the one-dimensional Ising spin chain undergoes coarsening, whereby the density of domain walls decays algebraically in time. We show that this coarsening process can be interrupted by exerting a rapidly oscillating periodic field with enough strength to compete with the spin-spin interaction. By analyzing correlation functions and the distribution of domain lengths both analytically and numerically, we observe nontrivial correlation with more than one length scale at the threshold field strength.
We consider lattice gas diffusive dynamics with creation-annihilation in the bulk and maintained out of equilibrium by two reservoirs at the boundaries. This stochastic particle system can be viewed as a toy model for granular gases where the energy is injected at the boundary and dissipated in the bulk. The large deviation functional for the particle currents flowing through the system is computed and some physical consequences are discussed: the mechanism for local current fluctuations, dynamical phase transitions, the fluctuation-relation.
We investigate quantum scaling phenomena driven by lower-dimensional defects in quantum Ising-like models. We consider quantum Ising rings in the presence of a bond defect. In the ordered phase, the system undergoes a quantum transition driven by the bond defect between a magnet phase, in which the gap decreases exponentially with increasing size, and a kink phase, in which the gap decreases instead with a power of the size. Close to the transition, the system shows a universal scaling behavior, which we characterize by computing, either analytically or numerically, scaling functions for the g…
Based on a high temperature expansion, we compute the two-point correlation function and the critical line of an Ising lattice gas driven into a non-equilibrium steady state by a uniform bias E. The lowest nontrivial order already reproduces the key features, i.e., the discontinuity singularity of the structure factor and the (qualitative) E-dependence of the critical line. Our approach is easily generalized to other non-equilibrium lattice models and provides a simple analytic tool for the study of the high temperature phase and its boundaries.
The response of dissipative systems to multi-chromatic fields exhibits generic properties which follow from the discrete time-translation symmetry of each driving component. We derive these properties and illustrate them with paradigmatic examples of classical and quantum dissipative systems. In addition, some computational aspects, in particular a matrix continued-fraction method, are discussed. Moreover, we propose possible implementations with quantum optical settings.
We consider a simple dissipative system with spatial structure in contact with a heat bath. The system always exhibits correlations except in the cases of zero and maximal dissipation. We explicitly calculate the correlation function and the nonlocal response function of the system and show that they have the same spatial dependence. Finally, we examine heat transfer in the model, which agrees qualitatively with simulations of vibrated granular gases.
A dissipative method that allows to access family of phantom Bethe-states (PBS) of boundary driven XXZ spin chains, is introduced. The method consists in coupling the ends of the open spin chain to suitable dissipative magnetic baths to force the edge spins to satisfy specific boundary conditions necessary for the PBS existence. Cumulative monotonous depopulation of the non-chiral components of the density matrix with growing dissipation amplitude is analogous to the depopulation of high-energy states in response to thermal cooling. Compared to generic states, PBS have strong chirality, nontri…
We study the dynamics of spin flipping at first order transitions in zero temperature two-dimensional random-field Ising model driven by an external field. We find a critical value of the disorder strength at which a discontinuous sharp jump in magnetization first occurs. We discuss growth morphology of the flipped-spin domains at and away from criticality.
Anomalous diffusion and non-Gaussian statistics are detected experimentally in a two-dimensional driven-dissipative system. A single-layer dusty plasma suspension with a Yukawa interaction and frictional dissipation is heated with laser radiation pressure to yield a structure with liquid ordering. Analyzing the time series for mean-square displacement (MSD), superdiffusion is detected at a low but statistically significant level over a wide range of temperature. The probability distribution function (PDF) fits a Tsallis distribution, yielding q, a measure of non-extensivity for non-Gaussian st…
We study the noisy dynamics of a close relative of the sand pile model. Depending on the type of noise and the time scale of observation, we find stationary fluctuations (similar to SOC) or an aging dynamics with punctuated equilibria, a decreasing rate of events and reset properties qualitatively similar to those of glassy systems and evolution models.
We investigate the non-equilibrium dynamics of a driven-dissipative spin ensemble with competing power-law interactions. We demonstrate that dynamical phase transitions as well as bistabilities can emerge for asymptotic van der Waals interactions, but critically rely on the presence of a slower decaying potential-core. Upon introducing random particle motion, we show that a finite gas temperature can drive a phase transition with regards to the spin degree of freedom and eventually leads to mean-field behaviour in the high-temperature limit. Our work reconciles contrasting observations of rece…
We investigate the nonequilibrium behavior of the d-dimensional Ising model with purely dissipative dynamics during its critical relaxation from a magnetized initial configuration. The universal scaling forms of the two-time response and correlation functions of the magnetization are derived within the field-theoretical approach and the associated scaling functions and fluctuation-dissipation ratio are computed up to first order in the epsilon-expansion. Aging behavior is clearly displayed during the critical relaxation. These results are confirmed by Monte Carlo simulations of the two-dimensi…
We present a novel generic framework to approximate the non-equilibrium steady states of dissipative quantum many-body systems. It is based on the variational minimization of a suitable norm of the quantum master equation describing the dynamics. We show how to apply this approach to different classes of variational quantum states and demonstrate its successful application to a dissipative extension of the Ising model, which is of importance to ongoing experiments on ultracold Rydberg atoms. Finally, we identify several advantages of the variational approach over previously employed mean-field…
We present an approach to the numerical simulation of open quantum many-body systems based on the semiclassical framework of the discrete truncated Wigner approximation. We establish a quantum jump formalism to integrate the quantum master equation describing the dynamics of the system, which we find to be exact in both the noninteracting limit and the limit where the system is described by classical rate equations. We apply our method to simulation of the paradigmatic dissipative Ising model, where we are able to capture the critical fluctuations of the system beyond the level of mean-field t…
Exact theoretical results for the violation of time dependent fluctuation-dissipation relations in driven dissipative systems are presented. The ratio of correlation to delayed response in the stochastic model introduced in [Phys. Rev. Lett. 93, 240601 (2004)] is shown to depend on measurement time. The fluctuation temperature defined by this ratio differs both from the temperature of the environment performing the driving, and from other effective temperatures of the system, such as the average energy (or "granular temperature"). General explanations are given for the time independence of flu…
Understanding the equilibration of isolated quantum systems under unitary dynamics is an interesting topic. In this paper, we look at the early time behaviour of periodically and quasi-periodically driven Transverse field Ising chains when and their corresponding dynamical free energies. We study the system under different frequencies and observe how the system evolves with changes in the field amplitudes in both types of oscillations.
Driven-dissipative systems define a broad class of non-equilibrium systems where an external drive (e.g. laser) competes with a dissipative environment. The steady state of dynamics is generically distinct from a thermal state characteristic of equilibrium. As a representative example, a driven-dissipative system with a continuous symmetry is generically disordered in two dimensions in contrast with the well-known algebraic order in equilibrium XY phases. In this paper, we study a 2D driven-dissipative model of weakly interacting bosons with a continuous $U(1)$ symmetry. Our aim is two-fold: F…
The physics of driven-dissipative transitions is currently a topic of great interest, particularly in quantum optical systems. These transitions occur in systems kept out of equilibrium and are therefore characterized by a finite entropy production rate. However, very little is known about how the entropy production behaves around criticality and all of it is restricted to classical systems. Using quantum phase-space methods, we put forth a framework that allows for the complete characterization of the entropy production in driven-dissipative transitions. Our framework is tailored specifically…
We study the nonequilibrium dynamics of a mesoscopic metallic ring threaded by a time-dependent magnetic field and coupled to an electronic reservoir. We analyze the relation between the (non-stationary) real-time Keldysh and retarded Green functions and we find that, in the linear response regime with weak heat transfer to the environment, an effective temperature accounts for the modification of the equilibrium fluctuation-dissipation relation. We discuss possible extensions of this analysis.
We investigate non-equilibrium behavior of driven dissipative systems, using the model presented in [Phys. Rev. Lett. 93, 240601 (2004)]. We solve the non-Boltzmann steady state energy distribution and the temporal evolution to it, and find its high energy tail to behave exponentially. We demonstrate that various measures of effective temperatures generally differ. We discuss infinite hierarchies of effective temperatures defined from moments of the non-exponential energy distribution, and relate them to the "configurational temperature", measured directly from instantaneous particle locations…
We study the long-time behavior of conservative interacting particle systems in $Z$: the activated random walk model for reaction-diffusion systems and the stochastic sandpile. We prove that both systems undergo an absorbing-state phase transition.
We consider the behavior of an Ising ferromagnet obeying the Glauber dynamics under the influence of a fast switching, random external field. Analytic results for the stationary state are presented in mean-field approximation, exhibiting a novel type of first order phase transition related to dynamic freezing. Monte Carlo simulations performed on a quadratic lattice indicate that many features of the mean field theory may survive the presence of fluctuations.
We study a driven-dissipative Bose-Hubbard model in presence of two-particle losses and an incoherent single-particle drive on each lattice site, leading to a finite-density stationary state. Using dynamical mean-field theory (DMFT) and an impurity solver based on exact diagonalization of the associated Lindbladian, we investigate the regime of strong two-particle losses. Here, a stationary-state quantum Zeno effect emerges, as can be seen in the on-site occupation and spectral function. We show that DMFT captures this effect through its self-consistent bath. We show that, in the deep Zeno reg…
