We describe partial differential operators for which we can construct generalised integral means satisfying Pizzetti-type formulas. Using these formulas we give a new characterisation of summability of formal power series solutions to some multidimensional partial differential equations in terms of holomorphic properties of generalised integral means of the Cauchy data.
We consider the Goursat problem for linear partial differential equations with constant coefficients in two complex variables. We find the conditions for summable solutions of the Goursat problem in the case when the Newton polygon has exactly one side with a positive slope.
We study the Cauchy problem for a general inhomogeneous linear moment partial differential equation of two complex variables with constant coefficients, where the inhomogeneity is given by the formal power series. We state sufficient conditions for the convergence, analytic continuation and summability of formal power series solutions in terms of properties of the inhomogeneity. We consider both the summability in one variable t (with coefficients belonging to some Banach space of Gevrey series with respect to the second variable z) and the summability in two variables (t,z).
The concept of moment differentiation is extended to the class of moment summable functions, giving rise to moment differential properties. The main result leans on accurate upper estimates for the integral representation of the moment derivatives of functions under exponential-like growth at infinity, and appropriate deformation of the integration paths. The theory is applied to obtain summability results of certain family of generalized linear moment partial differential equations with variable coefficients.
In this paper, we consider the stabilization of the generalized Rao-Nakra beam equation, which consists of four wave equations for the longitudinal displacements and the shear angle of the top and bottom layers and one Euler-Bernoulli beam equation for the transversal displacement. Dissipative mechanism are provided through viscous damping for two displacements. The location of the viscous damping are divided into two groups, characterized by whether both of the top and bottom layers are directly damped or otherwise. Each group consists of three cases. We obtain the necessary and sufficient co…
We consider a non-homogeneous generalised Burgers equation: $$ \frac{\partial u}{\partial t} + f'(u)\frac{\partial u}{\partial x} - ν\frac{\partial^2 u}{\partial x^2} = η^ω,\quad t \in \R,\ x \in S^1. $$ Here, νis small and positive, f is strongly convex and satisfies a growth assumption, while η^ω is a space-smooth random "kicked" forcing term. For any solution $u$ of this equation, we consider the quasi-stationary regime, corresponding to t>=2. After taking the ensemble average, we obtain upper estimates as well as time-averaged lower estimates for a class of Sobolev norms of $u$. These esti…
This article addresses linear hyperbolic partial differential equations and pseudodifferential equations with strongly singular coefficients and data, modelled as members of algebras of generalised functions. We employ the recently developed theory of generalised Fourier integral operators to construct parametrices for the solutions and to describe propagation of singularities in this setting. As required tools, the construction of generalised solutions to eikonal and transport equations is given and results on the microlocal regularity of the kernels of generalised Fourier integral operators …
We construct an expression for the Green function of a differential operator satisfying nonlocal, homogeneous boundary conditions starting from the fundamental solution of the differential operator. This also provides the solution to the boundary value problem of an inhomogeneous partial differential equation with inhomogeneous, nonlocal, and linear boundary conditions. The construction generally applies for all types of linear partial differential equations and linear boundary conditions.
We consider the non-homogeneous generalised Burgers equation \frac{\partial u}{\partial t} + f'(u)\frac{\partial u}{\partial x} - ν\frac{\partial^2 u}{\partial x^2} = η,\ t \geq 0,\ x \in S^1. Here f is strongly convex and satisfies a growth condition, νis small and positive, while ηis a random forcing term, smooth in space and white in time. For any solution u of this equation we consider the quasi-stationary regime, corresponding to t>=T_1, where T_1 depends only on f and on the distribution of η. We obtain sharp upper and lower bounds for Sobolev norms of $u$ averaged in time and in ensembl…
This paper is devoted to the study of generalised time-fractional evolution equations involving Caputo type derivatives. Using analytical methods and probabilistic arguments we obtain well-posedness results and stochastic representations for the solutions. These results encompass known linear and non-linear equations from classical fractional partial differential equations such as the time-space-fractional diffusion equation, as well as their far reaching extensions. \\ Meaning is given to a probabilistic generalisation of Mittag-Leffler functions.
We consider the generalised Burgers equation $$ \frac{\partial u}{\partial t} + f'(u)\frac{\partial u}{\partial x} - ν\frac{\partial^2 u}{\partial x^2}=0,\ t \geq 0,\ x \in S^1, $$ where $f$ is strongly convex and $ν$ is small and positive. We obtain sharp estimates for Sobolev norms of $u$ (upper and lower bounds differ only by a multiplicative constant). Then, we obtain sharp estimates for small-scale quantities which characterise the decaying Burgers turbulence, i.e. the dissipation length scale, the structure functions and the energy spectrum. The proof uses a quantitative version of an ar…
We introduce a class of overdetermined systems of partial differential equations of finite type on (pseudo)-Riemannian manifolds that we call the generalised Ricci soliton equations. These equations depend on three real parameters. For special values of the parameters they specialise to various important classes of equations in differential geometry. Among them there are: the Ricci soliton equations, the vacuum near-horizon geometry equations in general relativity, special cases of Einstein-Weyl equations and their projective counterparts, equations for homotheties and Killing's equation. We a…
Consider the supremal functional \[ \tag{1} \label{1} E_\infty(u,A) \,:=\, \|L(\cdot,u,D u)\|_{L^\infty(A)},\quad A\subseteq Ω, \] applied to $W^{1,\infty}$ maps $u:Ω\subseteq \mathbb{R}\longrightarrow \mathbb{R}^N$, $N\geq 1$. Under certain assumptions on $L$, we prove for any given boundary data the existence of a map which is: i) a vectorial Absolute Minimiser of \eqref{1} in the sense of Aronsson, ii) a generalised solution to the ODE system associated to \eqref{1} as the analogue of the Euler-Lagrange equations, iii) a limit of minimisers of the respective $L^p$ functionals as $p\rightarr…
We consider a linear equation $\partial_t u = \mathcal{L}u$, where $\mathcal{L}$ is a generator of a semigroup of linear operators on a certain Hilbert space related to an initial condition $u(0)$ being a generalised stationary random field on $\mathbb{R}^d$. We show the existence and uniqueness of generalised solutions to such initial value problems. Then we investigate their scaling limits.
The $(k,a)$-generalised Fourier transform is the unitary operator defined using the $a$-deformed Dunkl harmonic oscillator. The main aim of this paper is to prove $L^p$-$L^q$ boundedness of $(k, a)$-generalised Fourier multipliers. To show the boundedness we first establish Paley inequality and Hausdorff-Young-Paley inequality for $(k, a)$-generalised Fourier transform. We also demonstrate applications of obtained results to study the well-posedness of nonlinear partial differential equations.
Partial differential equations are central to describing many physical phenomena. In many applications these phenomena are observed through a sensor network, with the aim of inferring their underlying properties. Leveraging from certain results in sampling and approximation theory, we present a new framework for solving a class of inverse source problems for physical fields governed by linear partial differential equations. Specifically, we demonstrate that the unknown field sources can be recovered from a sequence of, so called, generalised measurements by using multidimensional frequency est…
The aim of this paper is to construct (explicit) heat kernels for some hybrid evolution equations which arise in physics, conformal geometry and subelliptic PDEs. Hybrid means that the relevant partial differential operator appears in the form $\mathscr L_1 + \mathscr L_2 - \partial_t$, but the variables cannot be decoupled. As a consequence, the relative heat kernel cannot be obtained as the product of the heat kernels of the operators $\mathscr L_1 - \partial_t$ and $\mathscr L_2 - \partial_t$. Our approach is new and ultimately rests on the generalised Ornstein-Uhlenbeck operators in the op…
We present extensions of the comparison and maximum principles available for nonlinear non-local integro-differential operators $P:\mathcal{C}^{2,1}(Ω\times (0,T])\times L^\infty (Ω\times (0,T])\to\mathbb{R}$, of the form $P[u] = L[u] -f(\cdot ,\cdot ,u,Ju)$ on $Ω\times (0,T]$. Here, we consider: unbounded spatial domains $Ω\subset \mathbb{R}^n$, with $T>0$; sufficiently regular second order linear parabolic partial differential operators $L$; sufficiently regular semi-linear terms $f:(Ω\times (0,T]) \times \mathbb{R}^2\to\mathbb{R}$; and the non-local term $Ju= \int_{Ω}ϕ(x-y)u(y,t)dy$, with $…
It is one of the most challenging problems in applied mathematics to approximatively solve high-dimensional partial differential equations (PDEs). In particular, most of the numerical approximation schemes studied in the scientific literature suffer under the curse of dimensionality in the sense that the number of computational operations needed to compute an approximation with an error of size at most $ \varepsilon > 0 $ grows at least exponentially in the PDE dimension $ d \in \mathbb{N} $ or in the reciprocal of $ \varepsilon $. Recently, so-called full-history recursive multilevel Picard (…
We study one particular asymptotic behaviour of a solution of the fractional modified Korteweg-de Vries equation (also known as the dispersion generalised modified Benjamin-Ono equation): \begin{align}\tag{fmKdV} \partial_t u + \partial_x (-\vert D \vert^αu + u^3)=0. \end{align} The dipole solution is a solution behaving in large time as a sum of two strongly interacting solitary waves with different signs. We prove the existence of a dipole for fmKdV. A novelty of this article is the construction of accurate profiles. Moreover, to deal with the non-local operator $\vert D \vert^α$, we refine …
We develop in this work a general version of paracontrolled calculus that allows to treat analytically within this paradigm some singular partial differential equations with the same efficiency as regularity structures. This work deals with the analytic side of the story and offers a toolkit for the study of such equations, under the form of a number of continuity results for some operators. We illustrate the efficiency of this elementary approach on the examples of the 3-dimensional generalised parabolic Anderson model equation and the generalised KPZ equation driven by a (1+1)-dimensional sp…
We define the weak intermediate boundary conditions for the triharmonic operator $- Δ^3$. We analyse the sensitivity of this type of boundary conditions upon domain perturbations. We construct a perturbation $(Ω_ε)_{ε> 0}$ of a smooth domain $Ω$ of $\mathbb{R}^N$ for which the weak intermediate boundary conditions on $\partial Ω_ε$ are not preserved in the limit on $\partial Ω$, analogously to the Babuška paradox for the hinged plate. Four different boundary conditions can be produced in the limit, depending on the convergence of $\partial Ω_ε$ to $\partial Ω$. In one particular case, we obtai…
