In this paper we are interested in the "fast path" fracture and we aim to use global-in-time, nonoverlapping domain decomposition methods to model flow and transport problems in a porous medium containing such a fracture. We consider a reduced model in which the fracture is treated as an interface between the two subdomains. Two domain decomposition methods are considered: one uses the time-dependent SteklovPoincar{é} operator and the other uses optimized Schwarz waveform relaxation (OSWR) based on Ventcell transmission conditions. For each method, a mixed formulation of an interface problem on the space-time interface is derived, and different time grids are employed to adapt to different time scales in the subdomains and in the fracture. Demonstrations of the well-posedness of the Ventcell subdomain problems is given for the mixed formulation. An analysis for the convergence factor of the OSWR algorithm is given in the case with fractures to compute the optimized parameters. Numerical results for two-dimensional problems with strong heterogeneities are presented to illustrate the performance of the two methods.
Simulation of frictional contact and shear failure of fractures in fractured media is of paramount important in computational mechanics. In this work, a preconditioned mixed-finite element (FE) scheme with Lagrange multipliers is proposed in the framework of constrained variational principle, which has the capability to handle frictional contact and slip of the multiple crossing fractures. The slippage, opening and contact traction on fractures are calculated by the resulted saddle-point algebraic system. A novel treatment is devised to guarantee physical solutions at the intersected position …
In this work, we present crack propagation experiments evaluated by digital image correlation (DIC) for a carbon black filled ethylene propylene diene monomer rubber (EPDM) and numerical modeling with the help of variational phase-field fracture. Our main focus is the evolution of cracks in one-sided notched EPDM strips containing a circular hole. The crack propagation experiments are complemented with investigations identifying the mechanical material properties as well as the critical strain energy release rate. For simulating the evolution of cracks with a given notch, phase-field fracture …
We present a hybrid-mixed finite element method for a novel hybrid-dimensional model of single-phase Darcy flow in a fractured porous media. In this model, the fracture is treated as an $(d-1)$-dimensional interface within the $d$-dimensional fractured porous domain, for $d=2, 3$. Two classes of fracture are distinguished based on the permeability magnitude ratio between the fracture and its surrounding medium: when the permeability in the fracture is (significantly) larger than in its surrounding medium, it is considered as a {\it conductive} fracture; when the permeability in the fracture is…
In this work, we consider pressurized phase-field fracture problems in nearly and fully incompressible materials. To this end, a mixed form for the solid equations is proposed. To enhance the accuracy of the spatial discretization, a residual-type error estimator is developed. Our algorithmic advancements are substantiated with several numerical tests that are inspired from benchmark configurations. Therein, a primal-based formulation is compared to our newly developed mixed phase-field fracture method for Poisson ratios approaching $ν\to 0.5$. Finally, for $ν= 0.5$, we compare the numerical r…

This work presents a new adaptive approach for the numerical simulation of a phase-field model for fractures in nearly incompressible solids. In order to cope with locking effects, we use a recently proposed mixed form where we have a hydro-static pressure as additional unknown besides the displacement field and the phase-field variable. To fulfill the fracture irreversibility constraint, we consider a formulation as a variational inequality in the phase-field variable. For adaptive mesh refinement, we use a recently developed residual-type a posteriori error estimator for the phase-field vari…
In this work, we consider fracture propagation in nearly incompressible and (fully) incompressible materials using a phase-field formulation. We use a mixed form of the elasticity equation to overcome volume locking effects and develop a robust, nonlinear and linear solver scheme and preconditioner for the resulting system. The coupled variational inequality system, which is solved monolithically, consists of three unknowns: displacements, pressure, and phase-field. Nonlinearities due to coupling, constitutive laws, and crack irreversibility are solved using a combined Newton algorithm for the…

Discrete Fracture and Matrix (DFM) models describe fractured porous media as complex sets of 2D planar polygons embedded in a 3D matrix representing the surrounding porous medium. The numerical simulation of the flow in a DFM requires the discretization of partial differential equations on the three dimensional matrix, the planar fractures and the one dimensional fracture intersections, and suitable coupling conditions between entities of different dimensionality need to be added at the various interfaces to close the problem. The present work proposes an arbitrary order implementation of the …
Interface cracking is one of the most prominent failure modes in fibre reinforced polymer (FRP) composites. Recent trends in high-tech applications of FRP composites exploit the limits of the load bearing capacity, generally encompassing the development of notable nonlinear effects from geometrical and material signatures. In this investigation, we present a comprehensive assessment of the new Linear Elastic Brittle Interface Model (LEBIM) in geometrically nonlinear applications undergoing mixed-mode fracture conditions. This interface model for triggering fracture events is formulated through…
The favored phase field method (PFM) has encountered challenges in the finite strain fracture modeling of nearly or truly incompressible hyperelastic materials. We identified that the underlying cause lies in the innate contradiction between incompressibility and smeared crack opening. Drawing on the stiffness-degradation idea in PFM, we resolved this contradiction through loosening incompressible constraint of the damaged phase without affecting the incompressibility of intact material. By modifying the perturbed Lagrangian approach, we derived a novel mixed formulation. In numerical aspects,…
In this paper, we propose an eXtended Virtual Element Method (X-VEM) for two-dimensional linear elastic fracture. This approach, which is an extension of the standard Virtual Element Method (VEM), facilitates mesh-independent modeling of crack discontinuities and elastic crack-tip singularities on general polygonal meshes. For elastic fracture in the X-VEM, the standard virtual element space is augmented by additional basis functions that are constructed by multiplying standard virtual basis functions by suitable enrichment fields, such as asymptotic mixed-mode crack-tip solutions. The design …
Discretization of flow in fractured porous media commonly lead to large systems of linear equations that require dedicated solvers. In this work, we develop an efficient linear solver and its practical implementation for mixed-dimensional scalar elliptic problems. We design an effective preconditioner based on approximate block factorization and algebraic multigrid techniques. Numerical results on benchmarks with complex fracture structures demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed linear solver and its robustness with respect to different physical and discretization parameters.
One of the state-of-the-art strategies for predicting crack propagation, nucleation, and interaction is the phase-field approach. Despite its reliability and robustness, the phase-field approach suffers from burdensome computational cost, caused by the non-convexity of the underlying energy functional and a large number of unknowns required to resolve the damage gradients. In this work, we propose to solve such nonlinear systems in a monolithic manner using the Schwarz preconditioned inexact Newton's (SPIN) method. The proposed SPIN method leverages the field split approach and minimizes the e…

The paper develops an unfitted finite element method for solving the Darcy system of equations posed in a network of fractures embedded in a porous matrix. The approach builds on the Hughes--Masud stabilized formulation of the Darcy problem and the trace finite element method. The system of fractures is allowed to cut through the background mesh in an arbitrary way. Moreover, the fractures are not triangulated in the common sense and the junctions of fractures are not fitted by the mesh. To couple the flow variables at multiple fracture junctions, we extend the Hughes--Masud formulation by inc…
We address the discretization of two-phase Darcy flows in a fractured and deformable porous medium, including frictional contact between the matrix-fracture interfaces. Fractures are described as a network of planar surfaces leading to the so-called mixed- or hybrid-dimensional models. Small displacements and a linear elastic behavior are considered for the matrix. Phase pressures are supposed to be discontinuous at matrix-fracture interfaces, as they provide a better accuracy than continuous pressure models even for high fracture permeabilities. The general gradient discretization framework i…
Mixed-dimensional elliptic equations exhibiting a hierarchical structure are commonly used to model problems with high aspect ratio inclusions, such as flow in fractured porous media. We derive general abstract estimates based on the theory of functional a posteriori error estimates, for which guaranteed upper bounds for the primal and dual variables and two-sided bounds for the primal-dual pair are obtained. We improve on the abstract results obtained with the functional approach by proposing four different ways of estimating the residual errors based on the extent the approximate solution ha…
This work introduces nodal auxiliary space preconditioners for discretizations of mixed-dimensional partial differential equations. We first consider the continuous setting and generalize the regular decomposition to this setting. With the use of conforming mixed finite element spaces, we then expand these results to the discrete case and obtain a decomposition in terms of nodal Lagrange elements. In turn, nodal preconditioners are proposed analogous to the auxiliary space preconditioners of Hiptmair and Xu (2007). Numerical experiments show the performance of this preconditioner in the contex…

Cohesive fracture is among the few techniques able to model complex fracture nucleation and propagation with a sharp (nonsmeared) representation of the crack. Implicit time-stepping schemes are often favored in mechanics due to their ability to take larger time steps in quasistatic and moderate dynamic problems. Furthermore, initially rigid cohesive models are typically preferred when the location of the crack is not known in advance, since initially elastic models artificially lower the material stiffness. It is challenging to include an initially rigid cohesive model in an implicit scheme be…

We derive the variational formulation of a gradient damage model by applying the energetic formulation of rate-independent processes and obtain a regularized formulation of fracture. The model exhibits different behavior at traction and compression and has a state-dependent dissipation potential which induces a path-independent work. We will show how such formulation provides the natural framework for setting up a consistent numerical scheme with the underlying variational structure and for the derivation of additional necessary conditions of global optimality in the form of a two-sided energe…

Non-linear phase field models are increasingly used for the simulation of fracture propagation models. The numerical simulation of fracture networks of realistic size requires the efficient parallel solution of large coupled non-linear systems. Although in principle efficient iterative multi-level methods for these types of problems are available, they are not widely used in practice due to the complexity of their parallel implementation. Here, we present Utopia, which is an open-source C++ library for parallel non-linear multilevel solution strategies. Utopia provides the advantages of high-l…

Modeling crack initiation and propagation in brittle materials is of great importance to be able to predict sudden loss of load-carrying capacity and prevent catastrophic failure under severe dynamic loading conditions. Second-order phase-field fracture models have gained wide adoption given their ability to capture the formation of complex fracture patterns, e.g. via crack merging and branching, and their suitability for implementation within the context of the conventional finite element method. Higher-order phase-field models have also been proposed to increase the regularity of the exact s…
In this work, we present a novel nonlocal nonlinear coarse grid approximation using a machine learning algorithm. We consider unsaturated and two-phase flow problems in heterogeneous and fractured porous media, where mathematical models are formulated as general multicontinuum models. We construct a fine grid approximation using the finite volume method and embedded discrete fracture model. Macroscopic models for these complex nonlinear systems require nonlocal multicontinua approaches, which are developed in earlier works. These rigorous techniques require complex local computations, which in…
We present an energy-preserving mechanic formulation for dynamic quasi-brittle fracture in an Eulerian-Lagrangian formulation, where a second-order phase-field equation controls the damage evolution. The numerical formulation adapts in space and time to bound the errors, solving the mesh-bias issues these models typically suffer. The time-step adaptivity estimates the temporal truncation error of the partial differential equation that governs the solid equilibrium. The second-order generalized-$α$ time-marching scheme evolves the dynamic system. We estimate the temporal error by extrapolating …
Mixed dimensional partial differential equations (PDEs) are equations coupling unknown fields defined over domains of differing topological dimension. Such equations naturally arise in a wide range of scientific fields including geology, physiology, biology and fracture mechanics. Mixed dimensional PDEs are also commonly encountered when imposing non-standard conditions over a subspace of lower dimension e.g. through a Lagrange multiplier. In this paper, we present general abstractions and algorithms for finite element discretizations of mixed domain and mixed dimensional PDEs of co-dimension …
