It is known that in single scalar field inflationary models the standard curvature perturbation ζ, which is supposedly conserved at superhorizon scales, diverges during reheating at times dΦ/dt=0, i.e. when the time derivative of the background inflaton field vanishes. This happens because the comoving gauge ϕ=0, where ϕ denotes the inflaton perturbation, breaks down when dΦ/dt=0. The issue is usually bypassed by averaging out the inflaton oscillations but strictly speaking the evolution of ζ is ill posed mathematically. We solve this problem in the free theory by introducing a family of smooth gauges that still eliminates the inflaton fluctuation ϕ in the Hamiltonian formalism and gives a well behaved curvature perturbation ζ, which is now rigorously conserved at superhorizon scales. At the linearized level, this conserved variable can be used to unambiguously propagate the inflationary perturbations from the end of inflation to subsequent epochs. We discuss the implications of our results for the inflationary predictions.
We investigate the generation of helical magnetic fields and address the baryon asymmetry of the universe from an inflationary magnetogenesis scenario, in which the conformal and parity symmetries of the electromagnetic field are broken through its coupling to the Ricci scalar and to the Gauss-Bonnet invariant via the dual field tensor, so that the generated magnetic field can have a helical nature. Depending on the reheating mechanism, we consider two different cases - (1) instantaneous reheating scenario, in which case the reheating e-fold number is zero, and (2) Kamionkowski reheating scena…
We revisit the gravitational leptogenesis scenario in which the inflaton is coupled to gravity by the Chern-Simons term and the lepton asymmetry is generated through the gravitational anomaly in the lepton number current during inflation. We constrain the possible model parameter space by requiring the absence of ghost modes below the Planck scale, which would suggest the breakdown of the effective theory, and evaluate the net baryon asymmetry for various reheating processes. We find that the mechanism with these requirements is insufficient to explain the observed baryon asymmetry of the Univ…

We study reheating in some one and two field realizations of {\it Fibre Inflation}. We find that reheating begins with a phase of preheating in which long wavelength fluctuation modes are excited. In two field models there is a danger that the parametric amplification of infrared fluctuations in the second scalar field - associated with an entropy mode - might induce an instability of the curvature fluctuations. We show that, at least in the models we consider, the entropy mode has a sufficiently large mass to prevent this instability. Hence, from the point of view of reheating the models we c…
We investigate the history of dark energy to explain the present magnitude. We assume the dark energy is the residual cosmological constant. The most important channel in the reheating process is the gluon pair productions by QCD trace anomaly. We argue dark energy decays rapidly by gluon pair emissions during the reheating and after the big bang. The reheating temperature is determined by the decay width of dark energy Gamma and the Planck mass M_p as sqrt{M_P Gamma} ~ 10^6GeV. It is the consequence of Friedmann's equation and an equilibrium condition Gamma~ H. As the Universe cools below the…
In order to describe inflation in general relativity, scalar fields must inevitably be used, with all the setbacks of that description. On the other hand, $f(R)$ gravity and other modified gravity theories seem to provide a unified description of early and late-time dynamics without resorting to scalar or phantom theories. The question is, can modified gravity affect directly the mysterious radiation domination era? Addressing this question is the focus in this work, and we shall consider the case for which in the early stages of the radiation domination era, namely during the reheating era, t…
In the present work, we study slow-roll inflation in scalar-tensor gravity theories in the presence of both the non-minimal coupling between the scalar field and curvature, and the Galileon self-interaction of the scalar field. Furthermore, we give predictions for the duration of reheating as well as for the reheating temperature after inflation. After working out the expressions for the power spectra of scalar and tensor perturbations in the case of a general non-minimal coupling function that depends solely on the scalar field and a general scalar potential, we focus on the special cases of …
The semiclassical gravity describes gravitational back-reactions of the classical spacetime interacting with quantum matter fields but the quantum effects on the background is formally defined as higher derivative curvatures. These induce catastrophic instabilities and classic solutions become unstable under small perturbations or their evolutions. In this paper we discuss validity of the semiclassical gravity from the perspective of the spacetime instabilities and consider cosmological dynamics of the Universe in this theory. We clearly show that the homogenous and isotropic flat Universe is …
We investigate the generation of Primordial Black Holes (PBHs) with the aid of gravitationally increased friction mechanism originated from the NonMinimal field Derivative Coupling (NMDC) to gravity framework, with the quartic potential. Applying the coupling parameter as a two-parted function of inflaton field and fine-tuning of five parameter assortments we can acquire ultra slow-roll phase to slow down the inflaton field due to high friction. This enables us to achieve enough enhancement in the amplitude of curvature perturbations power spectra to generate PBHs with different masses. The re…
We discuss the gravitational creation of superheavy particles $χ$ in an inflationary scenario with a quartic potential and a non-minimal coupling between the inflaton $φ$ and the Ricci curvature: $ξφ^2 R/2$. We show that for large constants $ξ>> 1$, there can be abundant production of particles $χ$ with masses largely exceeding the inflationary Hubble rate $H_{infl}$, up to $(a~few) \times ξH_{infl}$, even if they are conformally coupled to gravity. We discuss two scenarios involving these gravitationally produced particles $χ$. In the first scenario, the inflaton has only gravitational intera…
The superhorizon (iso)curvature perturbations are conserved if the following conditions are satisfied: (i) (each) non adiabatic pressure perturbation is zero, (ii) the gradient terms are ignored, that is, at the leading order of the gradient expansion (iii) (each) total energy momentum tensor is conserved. We consider the case with the violation of the last two requirements and discuss the generation of secondary isocurvature perturbations during the late time universe. Second order gradient terms are not necessarily ignored even if we are interested in the long wavelength modes because of the…
This paper focuses on the realization of an inflationary model from a canonical scalar field theory with a Woods-Saxon potential, in the slow-roll approximation. Our analysis indicates that the observable quantities derived theoretically from our model, namely the spectral index of the primordial scalar curvature perturbations and the tensor-to-scalar ratio, are compatible with the latest Planck collaboration data. We also discuss the qualitative features of the potential, and we show that the value of the scalar field for which the graceful exit occurs, coincides with the inflection point of …

The inflation within the MSSM is proposed, where the inflaton field is a combination of the Higgs, squark and slepton states. While the inflationary phase is fully governed by the electron Yukawa superpotential coupling, the fields' condensates float along the flat $D$-term trajectory. This predicts the MSSM parameter $\tan β\simeq 13.1$ determined via the value of the curvature perturbation amplitude. The values of the scalar spectral index and the tensor-to-scalar ratio are predicted to be $n_s\simeq 0.966$ and $r=0.00118$. The postinflation reheating of the Universe proceeds by the radiativ…
We develop a covariant method for studying the effects of a reheating phase on the primordial adiabatic and isocurvature perturbations in two-field models of inflation. To model the decay of the scalar fields into radiation at the end of inflation, we introduce a prescription in which radiation is treated as an additional effective scalar field, requiring us to extend the two-field setup into a three-field system. In this prescription, the coupling between radiation and the scalars can be interpreted covariantly in terms geometrical quantities that parametrize the evolution of a background tra…
We discuss spontaneous symmetry breakdown (SSB) of both global and local scale symmetries in scalar-tensor gravity with two scalar fields, one of which couples nonminimally to scalar curvature while the other is a normal scalar field. In case of a global scale symmetry, by moving from the Jordan frame to the Einstein frame, a normal scalar field becomes massive while the dilaton remains massless after the SSB. In case of a local scale symmetry, we take a gauge fixing condition for the local scale invariance, $a R + b ϕ^2 = k$, which was found in our previous study of a Weyl's quadratic gravity…
The cosmological relaxation of the electroweak scale has been proposed as a mechanism to address the hierarchy problem of the Standard Model. A field, the relaxion, rolls down its potential and, in doing so, scans the squared mass parameter of the Higgs, relaxing it to a parametrically small value. In this work, we promote the relaxion to an inflaton. We couple it to Abelian gauge bosons, thereby introducing the necessary dissipation mechanism which slows down the field in the last stages. We describe a novel reheating mechanism, which relies on the gauge-boson production leading to strong ele…
Gravitational particle production in the early universe is due to the coupling of matter fields to curvature. This coupling may include derivative terms that modify the kinetic term. The most general first order action contains derivative couplings to the curvature scalar and to the traceless Ricci tensor, which can be dominant in the case of (pseudo-)Nambu-Goldstone bosons or disformal scalars, such as branons. In the presence of these derivative couplings, the density of produced particles for the adiabatic regime in the de Sitter phase (which mimics inflation) is constant in time and decays…
