We investigate non-Gaussianity in the modulated reheating scenario where fluctuations of the decay rate of the inflaton generate adiabatic perturbations, paying particular attention to the non-linearity parameters $f_{\rm NL}, τ_{\rm NL}$ and $g_{\rm NL}$ as well as the scalar spectral index and tensor-to-scalar ratio which characterize the nature of the primordial power spectrum. We also take into account the pre-existing adiabatic perturbations produced from the inflaton fluctuations. It has been known that the non-linearity between the curvature perturbations and the fluctuations of the decay rate can yield non-Gaussianity at the level of $f_{\rm NL} \sim \mathcal{O}(1)$, but we find that the non-linearity between the decay rate and the modulus field which determines the decay rate can generate much greater non-Gaussianity. We also discuss a consistency relation among non-linearity parameters which holds in the scenario and find that the modulated reheating yields a different one from that of the curvaton model. In particular, they both can yield a large positive $f_{\rm NL}$ but with a different sign of $g_{\rm NL}$. This provides a possibility to discriminate these two competitive models by looking at the sign of $g_{\rm NL}$. Furthermore, we work on some concrete inflation models and investigate in what cases models predict the spectral index and the tensor-to-scalar ratio allowed by the current data while generating large non-Gaussianity, which may have many implications for model-buildings of the inflationary universe.
We investigate the non-Gaussianity of primordial curvature perturbation in the modulated reheating scenario where the primordial perturbation is generated due to the spacial fluctuation of the inflaton decay rate to radiation. We use the $δN$ formalism to evaluate the trispectrum of curvature perturbation as well as its bispectrum. We give expressions for three non-linear parameters $f_{NL}, τ_{NL}$ and $g_{NL}$ in the modulated reheating scenario. If the intrinsic non-Gaussianity of scalar field fluctuations and third derivative of the decay rate with respect to scalar fields are negligibly s…
We consider reheating after inflation with a non-standard kinetic term. We show that the difference in the kinetic term in different Hubble patches inherited from the long-wavelength moduli inhomogeneities may generate a significant level of non-Gaussianity after inflation.
We investigate density perturbations generated through modulated reheating while inflation is driven by a conformally coupled scalar field. A large running of the spectral index is obtained, which reflects the basic nature of conformal inflation that higher-order time derivatives of the Hubble parameter during inflation are not necessarily small. This feature may allow us to distinguish between conformal inflation models and standard minimally coupled ones. We also investigate how the resulting fluctuations are modified when there is a deviation from an exact conformal coupling between the inf…
We review the theory of inflation with single and multiple fields paying particular attention to the dynamics of adiabatic and entropy/isocurvature perturbations which provide the primary means of testing inflationary models. We review the theory and phenomenology of reheating and preheating after inflation providing a unified discussion of both the gravitational and nongravitational features of multi-field inflation. In addition we cover inflation in theories with extra dimensions and models such as the curvaton scenario and modulated reheating which provide alternative ways of generating lar…
We generalize a recently proposed mechanism for the origin of primordial metric perturbations in inflationary models. Quantum fluctuations of light scalar fields during inflation give rise to super-horizon fluctuations of masses and reaction rates of various particles. Reheating, freeze-out, and matter-domination processes become inhomogeneous and generate super-horizon metric perturbations. We also calculate the degree of non-Gaussianity $f_{nl}$ for this new model of cosmological perturbations. The precise value of $f_{nl}$ depends on the specific models, but $|f_{nl}|\sim$few is a natural l…
We have studied modulated inflation that generates curvature perturbation from light-field fluctuation. As discussed in previous works, even if the fluctuation of the inflaton itself does not generate the curvature perturbation at the horizon crossing, fluctuation of a light field may induce fluctuation for the end-line of inflation and this may lead to generation of cosmological perturbation ``at the end of the inflation''. Our scenario is different from those that are based on the fluctuations of the boundary of the inflaton trajectory, as clearly explained in this paper by using the $δN$ fo…
We study modulated inflation from kinetic term. Using the Mukhanov-Sasaki variable, it is possible to determine how mixing induced by the kinetic term feeds the curvature perturbation with the isocurvature perturbation. We show explicitly that the analytic result obtained from the evolution of the Mukhanov-Sasaki variable is consistent with the $δN$-formula. From our results, we find analytic conditions for the modulated fluctuation and the non-Gaussianity parameter.
We construct an inflationary model that is consistent with both large non-Gaussianity and a running spectral index. The scenario of modulated inflation suggests that modulated perturbation can induce the curvature perturbation with a large non-Gaussianity, even if the inflaton perturbation is negligible. Using this idea, we consider a multi-field extension of the modulated inflation scenario and examine the specific situation where different moduli are responsible for the perturbation at different scales. We suppose that the additional moduli (shooting-star moduli) is responsible for the curva…
Superstring theory, models with extra dimensions and other SUSY models generically predict that the coupling constants are in fact vacuum expectation values of fields like the dilaton, moduli etc. Assuming some of these fields are light during inflation, we get generation of small classical inhomogeneities in these fields from inflation. Consequently, coupling constants inherit small inhomogeneities at scales much larger than the causal horizon in the early universe. After the moduli get pinned down to their minima, the spatial variations of coupling constants in the late time universe will be…
We present a second-order gauge-invariant formalism to study the evolution of curvature perturbations in a Friedmann-Robertson-Walker universe filled by multiple interacting fluids. We apply such a general formalism to describe the evolution of the second-order curvature perturbations in the standard one-single field inflation, in the curvaton and in the inhomogeneous reheating scenarios for the generation of the cosmological perturbations. Moreover, we provide the exact expression for the second-order temperature anisotropies on large scales, including second-order gravitational effects and e…
Inflation universally produces classical almost scale free Gaussian inhomogeneities of any light scalars. Assuming the coupling constants at the time of inflation depend on some light moduli fields, we encounter the generation of modulated cosmological fluctuations from (p)reheating. This is an alternative mechanism to generate observable (almost) scale free adiabatic metric perturbations. We extend this idea to the class of hybrid inflation, where the bifurcation value of the inflaton is modulated by the spatial inhomogeneities of the couplings. As a result, the symmetry breaking after inflat…
Curvature perturbations generated after the end of inflation are estimated for a generic multi-field inflationary potential. The curvature perturbations are generated by conversion of inflationary isocurvature perturbations, similar to curvaton and inhomogeneous reheating scenarios. During inflation, the trajectory along which the fields are rolling down will fluctuate. When inflation ends, the fields enter the oscillatory phase along different directions in different parts of the universe. Different oscillatory trajectories can have different effective equations of state and reheating rates, …
We present a mechanism to transfer the spectrum of perturbations in a scalar isocurvature field $ξ$ onto the matter content in the radiation era via modulated, instant preheating after ekpyrosis. In this setup, $ξ$ determines the coupling constant relevant for the decay of a preheat matter field into Fermions. The resulting power spectrum is scale invariant if $ξ$ remains close to a scaling solution in new ekpyrotic models of the universe; by construction the spectrum is independent of the detailed physics near the bounce. The process differs from the curvaton mechanism, which has been used re…
Several conserved and/or gauge invariant quantities described as the second-order curvature perturbation have been given in the literature. We revisit various scenarios for the generation of second-order non-gaussianity in the primordial curvature perturbation ζ, employing for the first time a unified notation and focusing on the normalisation f_{NL} of the bispectrum. When the classical curvature perturbation first appears a few Hubble times after horizon exit, |f_{NL}| is much less than 1 and is, therefore, negligible. Thereafter ζ(and hence f_{NL}) is conserved as long as the pressure is a …
Recent second-order perturbation computations have provided an accurate prediction for the primordial gravitational potential $Φ(x)$ in scenarios in which cosmological perturbations are generated either during or after inflation. This enables us to make realistic predictions for a non-Gaussian part of $Φ(x)$, which is generically written in momentum space as a double convolution of its Gaussian part with a suitable kernel, f_NL(k1,k2). This kernel defines the amplitude and angular structure of the non-Gaussian signals and originates from the evolution of second-order perturbations after the ge…
We propose an alternative implementation of the curvaton mechanism for generating the curvature perturbations which does not rely on a late decaying scalar decoupled from inflation dynamics. In our mechanism the supersymmetric Higgs scalars are coupled to the inflaton in a hybrid inflation model, and this allows the conversion of the isocurvature perturbations of the Higgs fields to the observed curvature perturbations responsible for large scale structure to take place during reheating. We discuss an explicit model which realises this mechanism in which the $μ$ term in the Higgs superpotentia…
We propose a new mechanism to generate density perturbations in inflationary models. Spatial fluctuations in the decay rate of the inflaton field to ordinary matter lead to fluctuations in the reheating temperature. We argue that in most realistic models of inflation the coupling of the inflaton to normal matter is determined by the vacuum expectation values of fields in the theory. If those fields are light during inflation (this is a generic situation in the minimal models of supersymmetric inflation) they will fluctuate leading to density perturbations through the proposed mechanism. We sho…
A simple extension of the minimal supersymmetric standard model which naturally and simultaneously solves the strong CP and mu problems via a Peccei-Quinn and a continuous R symmetry is considered. This model is supplemented with hybrid inflation and leptogenesis, but without taking the specific details of these scenarios. It is shown that the Peccei-Quinn field can successfully act as a curvaton generating the total curvature perturbation in the universe in accord with the cosmic background explorer measurements. A crucial phenomenon, which assists us to achieve this, is the "tachyonic amplif…
We consider warped compactifications in (4+d)-dimensional theories, with four dimensional de Sitter dS_4 vacua (with Hubble parameter H) and with a compact internal space. After introducing a gauge-invariant formalism for the generic metric perturbations of these backgrounds, we focus on modes which are scalar with respect to dS_4. The physical eigenmasses of these modes acquire a large universal tachyonic contribution -12d/(d+2) H^2, independently of the stabilization mechanism for the compact space, in addition to the usual KK masses, which instead encode the effects of the stabilization. Ge…
