There has been considerable debate on the onset of exotic spin phenomena in quantum wires due to enhanced many-body effects caused by the one-dimensional (1D) alignment of charge carriers. We explain various observed spin effects, such as a carrier density-dependent spin-flip in dilute quasi-1D systems and the variability of the spin polarization in quantum point contacts, by using an unrestricted Hartree-Fock approach with a three-dimensional (3D) Coulomb interaction. The model dimensionality is critical in identifying a complex pattern of magnetic phases varying with confinement and magnetic field. In the limit of vanishing magnetic fields, we show the emergence of a degenerate excited state with opposite spin polarization above a confinement-dependent 1D concentration threshold, which is consistent with observations of a conductance plateau at half the conductance quantum $G_{0}/2=e^{2}/h$, even in the absence of spin-orbit interactions. Moreover, spin polarization disappears in highly-asymmetrically confined wires, and strictly two-dimensional systems.
The study of novel 2D platforms implementing magnetism in tunable van der Waals (vdW) homo- and hetero-structures paves the way to innovative spintronics and magnetic devices. In this study, we unravel the intriguing properties of few-layer Nb$_3$I$_8$ vdW nanofilms from first principles, showing how and to what extent specific magnetic orderings can be tuned using several degrees of freedom, such as film thickness, stacking geometry, and strain or even a combination of them. All these aspects are explored here, giving a comprehensive view of this novel and promising magnetic material.
Van der Waals heterostructures combining two-dimensional magnetic and semiconducting layers constitute a promising platform for interfacing magnetism, electronics, and optics. Here, we use resonant optical reflection spectroscopy to the observe magnetic proximity effect in a gate-tunable MoSe$_2$/CrBr$_3$ heterostructure. High quality of the interface leads to a giant zero-field splitting of the K and K' valley excitons in MoSe$_2$, equivalent to an external magnetic field of 12 T, with a weak but distinct electric field dependence that hints at potential for electrical control of magnetizatio…
Graphene has remarkable opportunities for spintronics due to its high mobility and long spin diffusion length, especially when encapsulated in hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN). Here, for the first time, we demonstrate gate-tunable spin transport in such encapsulated graphene-based spin valves with one-dimensional (1D) ferromagnetic edge contacts. An electrostatic backgate tunes the Fermi level of graphene to probe different energy levels of the spin-polarized density of states (DOS) of the 1D ferromagnetic contact, which interact through a magnetic proximity effect (MPE) that induces ferromagnet…
Controlling magnetic order in magnetic topological insulators (MTIs) is a key to developing spintronic applications with MTIs, and is commonly achieved by changing the magnetic doping concentration, which inevitably affects spin-orbit-coupling strength and the very topological properties. Here, we demonstrate tunable magnetic properties in topological heterostructures over a wide range, from a ferromagnetic phase with Curie temperature of around 100 K all the way to a paramagnetic phase, while keeping the overall chemical composition the same, by controlling the thickness of non-magnetic space…
We theoretically investigate topological spin transport of the magnon-polarons in bilayer magnet with two-dimensional square lattices. Our theory is motivated by recent reports on the van der Waals magnets which show the reversible electrical switching of the interlayer magnetic order between antiferromagnetic and ferromagnetic orders. The magnetoelastic interaction opens band gaps and allows the interband transition between different excitation states. In the layered antiferromagnet, due to the interband transition between the magnon-polaron states, the spin Berry curvature which allows the t…
Metamaterials present the possibility of artificially generating advanced functionalities through engineering of their internal structure. Artificial spin networks, in which a large number of nanoscale magnetic elements are coupled together, are promising metamaterial candidates that enable the control of collective magnetic behavior through tuning of the local interaction between elements. In this work, the motion of magnetic domain-walls in an artificial spin network leads to a tunable stochastic response of the metamaterial, which can be tailored through an external magnetic field and local…
We show that anisotropic energy of a 2D antiferromagnet is greatly enhanced via stacking on a magnetic substrate layer, arising from the sublattice-dependent interlayer magnetic interaction that defines an effective anisotropic energy. Interestingly, this effective energy couples strongly with the interlayer stacking order and the magnetic order of the substrate layer, providing unique mechanical and magnetic means to control the antiferromagnetic order. These two types of control methods affect distinctly the sublattice magnetization dynamics, with a change of the ratio of sublattice precessi…
Controlling electronic transport through a single-molecule junction is crucial for molecular electronics or spintronics. In magnetic molecular devices, the spin degree-of-freedom can be used to this end since the magnetic properties of the magnetic ion centers fundamentally impact the transport through the molecules. Here we demonstrate that the electron pathway in a single-molecule device can be selected between two molecular orbitals by varying a magnetic field, giving rise to a tunable anisotropic magnetoresistance up to 93%. The unique tunability of the electron pathways is due to the magn…
The gating effect achieved by an ionic liquid and its electric double layer allows for charge transfer which can be an order of magnitude larger than with conventional dielectrics. However, the large charged ions also causes inevitable Coulomb scattering in the conducting channel formed at the interface, which can limit the carrier mobility enhancement. In this work, we study the effect of the LaAlO3 thickness on the transport properties in LaAlO3/SrTiO3 heterostructures by ionic liquid gating. We find that the transport properties of the LaAlO3/SrTiO3 interface are dominated by the intrinsic …
The quantum anomalous Hall (QAH) effect - a macroscopic manifestation of chiral band topology at zero magnetic field - has only been experimentally realized by magnetic doping of topological insulators (1 - 3) and delicate design of Moire heterostructures (4 - 8). However, the seemingly simple bilayer graphene without magnetic doping or Moire engineering has long been predicted to host competing ordered states with QAH effects (9 - 11). Here, we explore states in bilayer graphene with conductance of 2 e2/h that not only survive down to anomalously small magnetic fields and up to temperatures o…
We consider the dynamics of relativistic spin-half particles in quantum graphs with transparent branching points. The system is modeled by combining the quantum graph concept with the one of transparent boundary conditions applied to the Dirac equation on metric graphs. Within such an approach, we derive simple constraints, which turn the usual Kirchhoff-type boundary conditions at the vertex equivalent to the transparent ones. Our method is applied to quantum star graph. An extension to more complicated graph topologies is straightforward.
We theoretically investigate the effects of tunable magnetic fringe fields generated by arrays of switchable magnetic junctions (MJs) on the quantum states of an underlying two-dimensional (2D) system formed in a semiconductor quantum well. The magnetic landscape generated by the MJ-array can be reconfigured on the nanometer scale by electrically switching the magnetic state of individual MJs. The interaction between the spin of the carriers and the fringe fields generates effective spin-dependent potentials acting like quantum dots (barriers) for carriers with spin parallel (antiparallel) to …

Tunable exchange bias effect in magnetic Bi$_{0.9}$Gd$_{0.1}$Fe$_{0.9}$Ti$_{0.1}$O$_3$ nanoparticles at temperatures up to 250 K
We theoretically investigate the exchange interaction between magnetic impurities in ultrathin Bi$_2$Se$_3$ topological insulator films by taking into account the low-energy states produced by the impurities. We find that the locally induced impurity resonances strongly influence the exchange interaction between magnetic moments. In particular, we find a non-collinear alignment being more favorable than the collinear ferromagnetic alignment preferred when impurity states are ignored and only the pristine topological insulator band structure is considered. Moreover, we show that by applying of …
Skyrmions are spatially localized magnetic swirls which carry a nonzero integer topological charge. We study crystals of skyrmions in a two-dimensional ferromagnet model with chiral interactions induced by the presence of broken inversion symmetry. We show that non-linear quartic mode-coupling terms allowed by symmetry enhances the Zeeman-field range over which the skyrmion-crystal phase remains stable. Furthermore, it leads to a significant dependence of the lattice constant of this spin crystal over this wide field range. Conduction electrons coupled to such a tunable spin crystal are shown …
We use tunable dipolar-interactions between the spins of nitrogen-vacancy (NV) centers in diamond to rotate a diamond crystal. Specifically, we employ cross-relaxation between the electronic spin of pairs of NV centers in a trapped diamond to enhance the anisotropic NV paramagnetism and thus to increase the associated spin torque. Our observations open a path towards the use of mechanical oscillators to detect paramagnetic defects that lack optical transitions, to investigation of angular momentum conservation in spin relaxation processes and to novel means of cooling the motion of mechanical …
Controlled Aharonov-Bohm caging of wave train is reported in a quasi-one dimensional version of Lieb geometry with next nearest neighbor hopping integral within the tight-binding framework. This longer wavelength fluctuation is considered by incorporating periodic, quasi-periodic or fractal kind of geometry inside the skeleton of the original network. This invites exotic eigenspectrum displaying a distribution of flat band states. Also a subtle modulation of external magnetic flux leads to a comprehensive control over those non-resonant modes. Real space renormalization group method provides u…
We study gated field effect transistors (FETs) with an eccentric Corbino-disk geometry, such that the drain spans its circumference while the off-center inner ring acts as a source. An AC THz potential difference is applied between source and gate while a static source-drain voltage, rectified by the nonlinearities of FET electrons, is measured. When a magnetic field is applied perpendicular to the device, a strong resonance appears at the cyclotron frequency. The strength of the resonance can be tuned by changing the eccentricity of the disk. We show that there is an optimum value of the ecce…
Multiply connected superconductors smaller than the coherence length show destructive superconductivity, characterized by reentrant quantum phase transitions driven by magnetic flux. We investigate the dependence of destructive superconductivity on flux, transverse magnetic field, temperature, and current in InAs nanowires with a surrounding epitaxial Al shell, finding excellent agreement with mean-field theory across multiple reentrant transitions. Near the crossover between destructive and nondestructive regimes, an anomalous metal phase is observed with temperature-independent resistance, c…
