Bilayer quantum Hall systems, realized either in two separated wells or in the lowest two sub-bands of a wide quantum well, provide an experimentally realizable way to tune between competing quantum orders at the same filling fraction. Using newly developed density matrix renormalization group techniques combined with exact diagonalization, we return to the problem of quantum Hall bilayers at filling $ν= 1/3 + 1/3$. We first consider the Coulomb interaction at bilayer separation $d$, bilayer tunneling energy $Δ_\textrm{SAS}$, and individual layer width $w$, where we find a phase diagram which includes three competing Abelian phases: a bilayer-Laughlin phase (two nearly decoupled $ν= 1/3$ layers); a bilayer-spin singlet phase; and a bilayer-symmetric phase. We also study the order of the transitions between these phases. A variety of non-Abelian phases have also been proposed for these systems. While absent in the simplest phase diagram, by slightly modifying the interlayer repulsion we find a robust non-Abelian phase which we identify as the "interlayer-Pfaffian" phase. In addition to non-Abelian statistics similar to the Moore-Read state, it exhibits a novel form of bilayer-spin charge separation. Our results suggest that $ν= 1/3 + 1/3$ systems merit further experimental study.
We examine the ground-state phase diagram and thermal phase transitions in a plaquettized fully frustrated bilayer spin-1/2 Heisenberg model. Based on a combined analysis from sign-problem free quantum Monte Carlo simulations, perturbation theory and free-energy arguments, we identify a first-order quantum phase transition line that separates two competing quantum-disordered ground states with dominant singlet formations on inter-layer dimers and plaquettes, respectively. At finite temperatures, this line extends to form a wall of first-order thermal transitions, which terminates in a line of …
We investigate correlated insulating states in magic-angle twisted bilayer graphene (TBG) by the exact diagonalization method applied to the extended Hubbard model with interaction parameters recently evaluated in the realistic effective model. Our model can handle the competing interactions among Wannier orbitals owing to their significant overlap, which is a crucial but overlooked aspect of the magic-angle TBG. We propose two candidates for the correlated insulating states: spin- and valley-ferromagnetic band insulator and the Dirac semimetallic state for two flavors with peculiar renormaliz…
Synthetic quantum Hall bilayer (SQHB), realized by optically driven monolayer graphene in the quantum Hall regime, provides a flexible platform for engineering quantum Hall phases as discussed in [Phys. Rev. Lett. 119, 247403]. The coherent driving which couples two Landau levels mimicks an effective tunneling between synthetic layers. The tunneling strength, the effective Zeeman coupling, and two-body interaction matrix elements are tunable by varying the driving frequency and the driving strength. Using infinite density matrix renormalization group (iDMRG) techniques combined with exact diag…
Motivated by the fact that many bilayer quantum magnets occur in nature, we generalize the study of thermal Hall transports of spin excitations to bilayer magnetic systems. It is shown that bilayer magnetic systems can be coupled either ferromagnetically or antiferromagnetically. We study both scenarios on the honeycomb lattice and show that the system realizes topologically nontrivial magnon bands induced by alternating next-nearest-neighbour Dzyaloshinsky-Moriya interaction (DMI). As a result, the bilayer system realizes both magnon Hall effect and magnon spin Nernst effect. We show that ant…
Semiconductor double-layers in the quantum Hall regime tend to have superfluid exciton condensate ground states when the total filling factor is an odd integer, provided that the Landau orbitals at the Fermi level in the two layers have the same orbital character. Since the $N=0$ Landau level of bilayer graphene contains states with both $n=0$ and $n=1$ orbital character, the physics of double bilayers falls outside previously studied cases. We show that the superfluid phase stiffness vanishes in double bilayer graphene when $n=0$ and $n=1$ orbitals states are degenerate in one of the layers, …
Motivated by work on the bulk topological proximity effect and the topological bootstrap, we consider two coupled layers of quantum anomalous Hall (QAH) insulators with opposite signs of time-reversal breaking, which leads to a trivial band insulator at half-filling. We study the impact of interactions in this model within slave rotor theory, which leads to a layer-selective Mott transition, resulting in a fractionalized quantum anomalous Hall insulator QAH$^*$ where a Chern band insulator coexists with a chiral spin liquid. We also compute the edge electron spectral function in the vicinity o…
We study irradiated two-dimensional insulating bilayer honeycomb ferromagnets and antiferromagnets coupled antiferromagnetically with a zero net magnetization. The former is realized in the recently synthesized bilayer honeycomb chromium triiodide CrI$_{\bf 3}$. In both systems, we show that circularly-polarized electric field breaks time-reversal symmetry and induces a dynamical Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction in each honeycomb layer. However, the resulting bilayer antiferromagnetic system still preserves a combination of time-reversal and space-inversion ($\mathcal{PT}$) symmetry. We show …
We report the nanoscale imaging of Ti-doped bilayer calcium ruthenates during the Mott metal-insulator transition by microwave impedance microscopy. Different from a typical first-order phase transition where coexistence of the two terminal phases takes place, a new metallic stripe phase oriented along the in-plane crystalline axes emerges inside both the G-type antiferromagnetic insulating state and paramagnetic metallic state. The effect of this electronic state can be observed in macroscopic measurements, allowing us to construct a phase diagram that takes into account the energetically com…
We derive the low-energy theory of semi-quantized quantum Hall states, a recently observed class of gapless bilayer fractional quantum Hall states. Our theory shows these states to feature gapless quasiparticles of fractional charge coupled to an emergent Chern-Simons gauge field. These gapless quasiparticles can be understood as composites of electrons and Laughlin-like quasiparticles. We show that semi-quantized quantum Hall states exhibit perfect interlayer drag, host non-Fermi liquid physics, and serve as versatile parent states for fully gapped topological phases hosting anyonic excitatio…
We study the fractional quantum Hall effect in the central Landau level of bilayer graphene. By tuning the external applied magnetic field and the electric bias between the two layers one can access a regime where there is a degeneracy between Landau levels with orbital characters corresponding to N=0 and N=1 Galilean Landau levels. While the Laughlin state is generically the ground state for filling $ν=1/3$ we find that it can be destroyed and replaced by a Wigner crystal at the same filling factor by tuning the bias and applied field. This competition does not take place at $ν=2/3$ where the…
We study the phase diagram of an effective model of competing nematic and antiferromagnetic orders of interacting electrons on the Bernal-stacked honeycomb bilayer, as relevant for bilayer graphene. In the noninteracting limit, the model features a semimetallic ground state with quadratic band touching points at the Fermi level. Taking the effects of short-range interactions into account, we demonstrate the existence of an extended region in the mean-field phase diagram characterized by coexisting nematic and antiferromagnetic orders. By means of a renormalization group approach, we reveal tha…
We implement a self-consistent Hartree-Fock approximation based on a microscopic model in real space, which allows us to consider the interplay between the Hubbard and the extended Coulomb interaction in twisted bilayer graphene at the magic angle. These two interactions tend to favor different symmetry breaking patterns, having therefore complementary roles in the regimes where one or the other dominates. We show that, for sufficiently large values of the on-site Hubbard repulsion, magic angle graphene has an antiferromagnetic ground state at the charge neutrality point, while at half-filling…
Tunneling spectroscopy reveals evidence for interlayer electron-hole correlations in quantum Hall bilayer two-dimensional electron systems at layer separations near, but above, the transition to the incompressible exciton condensate at total Landau level filling $ν_T=1$. These correlations are manifested by a non-linear suppression of the Coulomb pseudogap which inhibits low energy interlayer tunneling in weakly-coupled bilayers. The pseudogap suppression is strongest at $ν_T=1$ and grows rapidly as the critical layer separation for exciton condensation is approached from above.
We consider the time-reversal odd dynamics of the bilayer graphene at low energies in the quantum Hall regime. A generating functional for the effective action that captures the electromagnetic response to all orders in momentum and frequency is presented and evaluated to the third order in the space-time gradient $\mathcal O(\partial^3)$. In addition, we calculate the Hall viscosity and derive an explicit relationship with the $q^2$ coefficient of the Hall conductivity. It is reminiscent of the Hoyos--Son relation in the Galilean invariant systems, which can be recovered in the limit of large…
We propose a method for studying the strong interaction regimes in twisted bilayer graphene using hybrid Wannier functions, that are Wannier-like in one direction and Bloch-like in the other. We focus on the active bands as given by the continuum model proposed by Bistritzer and MacDonald, and discuss the properties of corresponding hybrid Wannier functions. We then employ the method for a study of the fillings of $\pm 3$ electrons per moiré cell using the Hartree-Fock method. We discuss at length different regimes under which a quantized anomalous Hall effect is seen in these two fillings.
