We study the P-wave charmed baryons using the method of QCD sum rule in the framework of heavy quark effective theory (HQET). We consider systematically all possible baryon currents with a derivative for internal rho- and lambda-mode excitations. We have found a good working window for the currents corresponding to the rho-mode excitations for Lambda_c(2595), Lambda_c(2625), Xi_c(2790) and Xi_c(2815) which complete two SU(3) 3F_bar multiplets of J(P)=1/2(-) and 3/2(-), while the currents corresponding to the lambda-mode excitations seem also consistent with the data. Our results also suggest that there are two Sigma_c(2800) states of J(P)=1/2(-) and 3/2(-) whose mass splitting is 14 \pm 7 MeV, and two Xi_c(2980) states whose mass splitting is 12 \pm 7 MeV. They have two Omega_c partners of J(P) = 1/2(-) and 3/2(-), whose masses are around 3.25 \pm 0.20 GeV with mass splitting 10 \pm 6 MeV. All of them together complete two SU(3) 6F multiplets of J(P)=1/2(-) and 3/2(-). They may also have J(P)=5/2(-) partners. Xi_c(3080) may be one of them, and the other two are Sigma_c(5/2(-)) and Omega_c(5/2(-)), whose masses are 85 \pm 23 and 50 \pm 27 MeV larger.
We present the energy spectra of the low lying doubly-charmed baryons using lattice quantum chromodynamics. We precisely predict the ground state mass of the charmed-strange Omega(cc) (1/2+) baryon to be 3712(11)(12) MeV which could well be the next doubly-charmed baryon to be discovered at the LHCb experiment at CERN. We also predict masses of other doubly-charmed strange baryons with quantum numbers 3/2+, 1/2-, and 3/2-.
Until now, the first reported doubly charmed baryon $Ξ_{cc}^{+}(3520)$ is still a puzzle. It was discovered and confirmed by SELEX collaboration, but not confirmed by LHCb, BABAR, BELLE, FOCUS, or any other collaboration. In the present paper, by employing Regge phenomenology, we first express the mass of the ground state ($L$=0) doubly charmed baryon $Ω_{cc}^{*+}$ as a function of masses of the well established light baryons and singly charmed baryons. Inserting the recent experimental data, the mass of $Ω_{cc}^{*+}$ is given to be 3809$\pm$36 MeV, which is independent of any unobservable par…
We study decay properties of the $P$-wave charmed baryons using the method of light-cone QCD sum rules, including the $S$-wave decays of the flavor $\mathbf{\bar 3}_F$ $P$-wave charmed baryons into ground-state charmed baryons accompanied by a pseudoscalar meson ($π$ or $K$) or a vector meson ($ρ$ or $K^*$), and the $S$-wave decays of the flavor $\mathbf{6}_F$ $P$-wave charmed baryons into ground-state charmed baryons accompanied by a pseudoscalar meson ($π$ or $K$). We study both two-body and three-body decays which are kinematically allowed. We find two mixing solutions from internal $ρ$- an…
This is basically the update of [arXiv:0809.1869], a review on charmed baryon physics around 2007. Topics of this review include the spectroscopy, strong decays, lifetimes, nonleptonic and semileptonic weak decays, and electromagnetic decays of charmed baryons.
We systematically study the $S$-wave doubly charmed baryons using the method of QCD sum rules. Our results suggest that the $Ξ_{cc}^{++}$ recently observed by LHCb can be well identified as the $S$-wave $Ξ_{cc}$ state of $J^P = 1/2^+$. We study its relevant $Ω_{cc}$ state, whose mass is predicted to be around 3.7 GeV. We also systematically study the $P$-wave doubly charmed baryons, whose masses are predicted to be around 4.1 GeV. Especially, there can be several excited doubly charmed baryons in this energy region, and we suggest to search for them in order to study the fine structure of the …
We systematically investigate the possible molecular states composed of (1) two spin-$\frac{3}{2}$ doubly charmed baryons, and (2) a pair of spin-$\frac{3}{2}$ and spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ doubly charmed baryons. The one-boson-exchange (OBE) model is used to describe the potential between two baryons. The channel mixing effect is considered for the systems with the same quantum number $(I(J^P))$ but different total spin ($S$) and orbital angular momenta ($L$). We also study the channel mixing effect among the systems composed of various doubly charmed baryons if they have the same quantum number. Ma…
We study the electromagnetic form factors of the doubly charmed baryons, using covariant chiral perturbation theory within the extended on-mass-shell (EOMS) scheme. Vector-meson contributions are also taken into account. We present results for the baryon magnetic moments, charge and magnetic radii. While some of the chiral Lagrangian parameters could be set to values determined in previous works, the available lattice results for $Ξ_{cc}^+$ and $Ω_{cc}^+$ only allow for robust constraints on the low-energy constant (LEC) combination, $c_{89}(=-\frac{1}{3}c_8+4c_9)$. The couplings of the doubly…
We have systematically investigated the magnetic moments of spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ doubly charmed baryons in the framework of the heavy baryon chiral perturbation theory. In this paper, one loop corrections with intermediate spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ and spin-$\frac{3}{2}$ doubly charmed baryon states are considered. The numerical results are calculated to next-to-leading order: $μ_{Ξ^{++}_{cc}}=0.35μ_{N}$, $μ_{Ξ^{+}_{cc}}=0.62μ_{N}$, $μ_{Ω^{+}_{cc}}=0.41μ_{N}$. Our results may be useful for future experiment and chiral extrapolation of the lattice QCD.
We systematically derive the analytical expressions of the magnetic moments of the spin-$1\over 2$ singly charmed baryons to the next-to-next-to-leading order in the heavy baryon chiral perturbation theory (HBChPT). We discuss the analytical relations between the magnetic moments. We estimate the-low energy constants (LECs) in two scenarios. In the first scenario, we use the quark model and Lattice QCD simulation results as input. In the second scenario, the heavy quark symmetry is adopted to reduce the number of the independent LECs, which are then fitted using the data from the Lattice QCD s…
We investigate the possible deuteron-like molecules composed of a pair of charmed spin-$\frac{3}{2}$ baryons, or one charmed baryon and one charmed antibaryon within the one-boson-exchange (OBE) model. For the spin singlet and triplet systems, we consider the couple channel effect between systems with different orbital angular momentum. Most of the systems have binding solutions. The couple channel effect plays a significant role in the formation of some loosely bound states. The possible molecular states of $Ω_c^*Ω_c^*$ and $Ω_c^*\barΩ_c^*$ might be stable once produced.
We discuss the significance of charm baryon spectroscopy in hadron physics and review the recent developments of the spectra of charmed baryons in lattice calculations. Special emphasis is given on the recent studies of highly excited charm baryon states. Recent precision lattice measurements of the low lying charm and bottom baryons are also reviewed.
This is an update of the two articles (H.Y. Cheng, 2009; Cheng, 2015) in which charmed baryon physics around 2007 and 2015, respectively, were reviewed. In this review we emphasize the experimental progress and the theoretical development since 2015.

We study strange and charmed baryon productions, ${π+ p \rightarrow K(D) + Y(Y_c)}$, where ${Y(Y_c)}$ is a strange(charmed) baryon of a ground or an excited state. We propose a new production mechanism where two quarks in the baryon participate in the reaction (two-quark process), which enables excitation of both $λ$- and $ρ$-modes of the baryons. To deal with the two-quark process, we consider the 't Hooft six-quark interaction from the instanton model. We study production rates in relation with the structure of charmed baryons for the forward angle scattering.
We report on the calculation of the CP-violating form factor $F_3$ and the corresponding electric dipole moment for charmed baryons in the spin-1/2 sector generated by the QCD $θ$-term. We work in the framework of covariant baryon chiral perturbation theory within the extended-on-mass-shell renormalization scheme up to next-to-leading order in the chiral expansion.
We have investigated the electromagnetic decays of the antitriplet and sextet charmed baryon systems with $J^P= \frac{1}{2}^+, \frac{3}{2}^+$ in the framework of the heavy baryon chiral perturbation theory. We first construct the chiral Lagrangians at $O(p^2)$ and $O(p^3)$. Then we calculate the electromagnetic (EM) decay amplitudes of the charmed baryon systems up to $O(p^3)$. With the help of the quark model, we estimate the low energy constants. The numerical results of the EM decay widths show good convergence of the chiral expansion. We notice that the two neutral EM decay processes $Ξ_c'…
In this work we study the possible QCD exotic states in the doubly charmed baryon sector. Within chiral effective theory, it is predicted that several excited baryons result from the $S$-wave scattering of ground-state doubly charmed baryons ($Ξ_{cc}^{++}, Ξ_{cc}^{+}, Ω_{cc}^{+}$) and light pseudoscalar mesons ($π, K, η$). The excited doubly charmed baryons can be classified by the strangeness ($S$) and isospin ($I$) quantum numbers. Two of the excited states are clearly exotic, in the sense that they cannot be explained by the conventional baryons with three quarks, since their quantum number…
We use QCD sum rules to study mass spectra of $P$-wave charmed baryons of the $SU(3)$ flavor $\mathbf{6}_F$. We also use light-cone sum rules to study their $S$- and $D$-wave decays into ground-state charmed baryons together with light pseudoscalar and vector mesons. We work within the framework of heavy quark effective theory, and we also consider the mixing effect. Our results can explain many excited charmed baryons as a whole, including the $Σ_c(2800)^0$, $Ξ_c(2923)^0$, $Ξ_c(2939)^0$, $Ξ_{c}(2965)^{0}$, $Ω_c(3000)^0$, $Ω_c(3050)^0$, $Ω_c(3066)^0$, $Ω_c(3090)^0$, and $Ω_c(3119)^0$. Their ma…
Recent experimental advances have reignited theoretical interests in heavy-flavor hadrons. In this work, we study the magnetic moments of the spin-1/2 singly charmed baryons up to the next-to-leading order in covariant baryon chiral perturbation theory with the extended-on-mass-shell renormalization scheme. The pertinent low energy constants $g_{1-4}$ are fixed with the help of the quark model and the heavy quark spin flavor symmetry, while the remaining $d_2$, $d_3$, $d_5$ and $d_6$ are determined by fitting to the lattice QCD pion-mass dependent data. We study the magnetic moments as a funct…
We have systematically investigated the spin-$\frac{3}{2}$ to spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ doubly charmed baryon transition magnetic moments to the next-to-next-to-leading order in the heavy baryon chiral perturbation theory (HBChPT). Numerical results of transition magnetic moments and decay widths are presented to the next-to-leading order: $μ_{Ξ_{cc}^{*++}\rightarrowΞ_{cc}^{++}}=-2.35μ_{N}$, $μ_{Ξ_{cc}^{*+}\rightarrowΞ_{cc}^{+}}=1.55μ_{N}$, $μ_{Ω_{cc}^{*+}\rightarrowΩ_{cc}^{+}}=1.54μ_{N}$, $Γ_{Ξ_{cc}^{*++}\rightarrowΞ_{cc}^{++}}=22.0$ keV, $Γ_{Ξ_{cc}^{*+}\rightarrowΞ_{cc}^{+}}=9.57$ keV, $Γ_{Ω_{cc}^{…
We calculate the low-lying spectrum of charmed baryons in lattice QCD on the $32^3\times64$, $N_f=2+1$ PACS-CS gauge configurations at the almost physical pion mass of $\sim 156$ MeV/c$^2$. By employing a set of interpolating operators with different Dirac structures and quark-field smearings for the variational analysis, we extract the ground and first few excited states of the spin-$1/2$ and spin-$3/2$, singly-, doubly-, and triply-charmed baryons. Additionally, we study the $Ξ_c$-$Ξ_c^\prime$ mixing and the operator dependence of the excited states in a variational approach. We identify sev…
We discuss the status of current dynamical lattice QCD simulations in connection to the emerging results on the strange and charmed baryon spectrum, excited states of the nucleon and the investigation of the structure of scalar mesons.
Inspired by the recent discovery of the $Ξ_{cc}^{++}$ by the LHCb Collaboration, we study the magnetic moments of the spin-1/2 doubly charmed baryons up to the next-to-leading order in covariant baryon chiral perturbation theory with the extended-on-mass-shell renormalization scheme. There are three low energy constants at this order, $a_1$, $a_2$ and $g_a$. The latest lattice QCD simulations allow us to fix a combination of $a_1$ and $a_2$, while the axial-vector coupling $g_a$ can be determined in three different ways, either by fitting to the lattice QCD data, or by the quark model, or by t…
By an unquenched quark model, we predict a charmed-strange baryon state, namely, the $Ω_{c0}^d(1P,1/2^-)$. Its mass is predicted to be 2945 MeV, which is below the $Ξ_c\bar{K}$ threshold due to the nontrivial coupled-channel effect. So the $Ω_{c0}^d(1P,1/2^-)$ state could be regraded as the analog of the charmed-strange meson $D_{s0}^*(2317)$. It is a good opportunity for the running Belle II experiment to search for this state in the $Ω_c^{(*)}γ$ mass spectrum experiment in the future.
Flavor $SU(3)$ symmetry is a powerful tool to analyze charmed baryon decays. In this work, we propose an approach to generate $SU(3)$ sum rules for the singly and doubly charmed baryon decays without writing the Wigner-Eckhart invariants explicitly. The $SU(3)$ sum rules are computed routinely in several master formulas. Hundreds of $SU(3)$ sum rules are found to serve as test of the flavor symmetry in the charmed baryon decays.
We present a systematic investigation of the possible molecular states composed of a pair of doubly charmed baryons ($Ξ_{cc}Ξ_{cc}$) or one doubly charmed baryon and one doubly charmed antibaryon $(Ξ_{cc}\barΞ_{cc})$ within the framework of the one-boson-exchange-potential model. For the spin-triplet systems, we take into account the mixing between the ${}^3S_1$ and ${}^3D_1$ channels. For the baryon-baryon system $Ξ_{cc}Ξ_{cc}$ with $(R,I) = (\bar{3}, 1/2)$ and $(\bar{3}, 0)$, where $R$ and $I$ represent the group representation and the isospin of the system, respectively, there exist loosely…
We have calculated the scattering lengths between the pseudoscalar meson and charmed triplet, sextet, and excited sextet baryon to the third order with the heavy baryon chiral perturbation theory. The chiral expansion of the pion channels converges well.
We study the branching ratios and up-down asymmetries in the charmed baryon weak decays of ${\bf B}_c\to {\bf B}_DM$ with ${\bf B}_{c(D)}$ anti-triplet charmed (decuplet) baryon and $M$ pseudo-scalar meson states based on the flavor symmetry of $SU(3)_F$. We propose equal and physical-mass schemes for the hadronic states to deal with the large variations of the decuplet baryon momenta in the decays in order to fit with the current experimental data. We find that our fitting results of ${\cal B}({\bf B}_c\to {\bf B}_DM) $ are consistent with the current experimental data in both schemes, while …
In this work, we investigate the mass corrections of the doubly charmed baryons up to $N^2LO$ in the extended-on-mass-shell (EOMS) renormalization scheme, comparing with the results of heavy baryon chiral perturbation theory. We find that the terms from the heavy baryon approach are a subset of those obtained in the EOMS scheme. By fitting the lattice data, we can determine the parameters $\tilde{m}$, $α$, $c_1$ and $c_7$ from the Lagrangian, while in the heavy baryon approach no information on $c_1$ can be obtained from the baryons mass. Correspondingly, the masses of $m_{Ξ_{cc}}$ and $m_{Ω_{…
Inspired by the discovery of the spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ doubly charmed baryon $Ξ_{cc}^{++}$ and the subsequent theoretical studies of its magnetic moments, we study the magnetic moments of its spin-$\frac{3}{2}$ heavy quark spin symmetry counterparts, up to the next-to-leading order in covariant baryon chiral perturbation theory (BChPT) with the extended-on-mass-shell renormalization (EOMS) scheme. With the tree-level contributions fixed by the quark model while the two low energy constants (LECs) $C$ and $H$ controlling the loop contributions determined in two ways: the quark model (case 1) and l…
