Using the Davies-Helffer-Sjöstrand functional calculus based on almost analytic extensions, we address the following problem: Given self-adjoint operators $S_j$, $j=1,2$, in $\mathcal{H}$, and functions $f$ in an appropriate class, for instance, $f \in C_0^{\infty}(\mathbb{R})$, how to control the norm $\|f(S_2) - f(S_1)\|_{\mathcal{B}(\mathcal{H})}$ in terms of the norm of the difference of resolvents, $\|(S_2 - z_0 I_{\mathcal{H}})^{-1} - (S_2 - z_0 I_{\mathcal{H}})^{-1}\|_{\mathcal{B}(\mathcal{H})}$, for some $z_0 \in \mathbb{C}\backslash\mathbb{R}$. We are particularly interested in the case where $\mathcal{B}(\mathcal{H})$ is replaced by a trace ideal, $\mathcal{B}_p(\mathcal{H})$, $p \in [1,\infty)$.
In this paper we study Dixmier traces of powers of Hankel operators in Lorentz ideals. We extend results of Engliš-Zhang to the case of powers $p\geq 1$ and general Lorentz ideals starting from abstract extrapolation results of Gayral-Sukochev. In the special case $p=2,4,6$ we give an exact formula for the Dixmier trace. For general $p$, we give upper and lower bounds on the Dixmier trace. We also construct, for any $p$ and any Lorentz ideal, examples of non-measurable Hankel operators.
We propose a new class of traces motivated by a trace/trace class property discovered by Laurie, Nordgren, Radjavi and Rosenthal concerning products of operators outside the trace class. Spectral traces, traces that depend only on the spectrum and algebraic multiplicities, possess this property and we suspect others do, but we know of no other traces that do. This paper is intended to be part survey. We provide here a brief overview of some facts concerning traces on ideals, especially involving Lidskii formulas and spectral traces. We pose the central question: whenever the relevant products,…
We develop the theory of modulated operators in general principal ideals of compact operators. For Laplacian modulated operators we establish Connes' trace formula in its local Euclidean model and a global version thereof. It expresses Dixmier traces in terms of the vector-valued Wodzicki residue. We demonstrate the applicability of our main results in the context of log-classical pseudo-differential operators, studied by Lesch, and a class of operators naturally appearing in noncommutative geometry.
The goal of this review is to explain some recent results regarding generalizations of the Stein-Tomas (and Strichartz) inequalities to the context of trace ideals (Schatten spaces).
We prove perturbation results for traces on normed ideals in semifinite von Neumann algebra factors. This includes the case of Dixmier traces. In particular, we establish existence of spectral shift measures with initial operators being dissipative or bounded, and show that these measures can have singular components in the case of Dixmier traces. We also establish a linearization formula for a Dixmier trace applied to perturbed operator functions, a result that does not typically hold for normal traces.
Given operators $A,B$ in some ideal $\mathcal{I}$ in the algebra $\mathcal{L}(H)$ of all bounded operators on a separable Hilbert space $H$, can we give conditions guaranteeing the existence of a trace-class operator $C$ such that $B \otimes C$ is submajorized (in the sense of Hardy--Littlewood) by $A \otimes C$ ? In the case when $\mathcal{I} = \mathcal{L}_1$, a necessary and almost sufficient condition is that the inequalities ${\rm Tr} (B^p) \leq {\rm Tr} (A^p)$ hold for every $p \in [1,\infty]$. We show that the analogous statement fails for $\mathcal{I} = \mathcal{L}_{1,\infty}$ by connec…
Let $H, V$ be self-adjoint operators such that $V$ belongs to the weak trace class ideal. We prove higher order perturbation formula $$τ\big(f(H+V)-\sum_{j=0}^{n-1}\frac{1}{j!}\frac{d^j}{dt^j} f(H+tV)\big|_{t=0}\big)=\int_{\mathbb{R}} f^{(n)}(t)\,dm_n(t),$$ where $τ$ is a trace on the weak trace class ideal and $m_n$ is a finite measure that is not necessarily absolutely continuous. This result extends the first and second order perturbation formulas of Dykema and Shripka, who generalised the Krein and Koplienko trace formulas to the weak trace class ideal. We also establish the perturbation f…
Operator ideals in B(H) are well understood and exploited but ideals inside them have only recently been studied starting with the 1983 seminal work of Fong and Radjavi and continuing with two recent articles by the authors of this survey. This article surveys this study embodied in these three articles. A subideal is a two-sided ideal of J (for specificity also called a J-ideal) for J an arbitrary ideal of B(H). In this terminology we alternatively call J a B(H)-ideal. This surveys these three articles in which we developed a complete characterization of all J-ideals generated by sets of card…
We extend to the case of a threshold ideal our result with J. Bourgain about the essential centre of the commutant mod a diagonalization ideal for a n-tuple of commuting Hermitian operators . We also compute the $K_0$-group of the commutant mod trace-class of a unitary operator with spectrum equal to its essential spectrum. We present the problem of computing the $K_1$-group for a commutant mod trace-class in its simplest case.
Let $K_θ$ be a model space generated by an inner function $θ$. We study the Schatten class membership of embeddings $I : K_θ\to L^2(μ)$, $μ$ a positive measure, and of composition operators $C_ϕ:K_θ\to H^2(\mathbb D)$ with a holomprphic function $ϕ:\mathbb D\rightarrow \mathbb D$. In the case of one-component inner functions $θ$ we show that the problem can be reduced to the study of natural extensions of $I$ and $C_ϕ$ to the Hardy-Smirnov space $E^2(D)$ in some domain $D\supset \mathbb D$. In particular, we obtain a characterization of Schatten membership of $C_ϕ$ in terms of Nevanlinna count…
This paper extends the trace formulas of [5] with perturbations in normed ideals of $B(H)$ to multivariate functions of commuting contractions admitting a dilation to commuting normal contractions.
In this paper we prove that for an arbitrary pair $\{T_1,T_0\}$ of contractions on Hilbert space with trace class difference, there exists a function $\boldsymbolξ$ in $L^1({\Bbb T})$ (called a spectral shift function for the pair $\{T_1,T_0\}$ ) such that the trace formula $\operatorname{trace}(f(T_1)-f(T_0))=\int_{\Bbb T} f'(ζ)\boldsymbolξ(ζ)\,dζ$) holds for an arbitrary operator Lipschitz function $f$ analytic in the unit disk.
We study the interplay between Banach space theory and theory of analytic P-ideals. Applying the observation that, up to isomorphism, all Banach spaces with unconditional bases can be constructed in a way very similar to the construction of analytic P-ideals from submeasures, we point out numerous symmetries between the two theories. Also, we investigate a special case, the interactions between combinatorics of families of finite sets, topological properties of the "Schreier type" Banach spaces associated to these families, and the complexity of ideals generated by the canonical bases in these…
In this note we study the problem of evaluating the trace of $f(T)-f(R)$, where $T$ and $R$ are contractions on Hilbert space with trace class difference, i.e., $T-R\in\boldsymbol{S}_1$ and $f$ is a function analytic in the unit disk ${\Bbb D}$. It is well known that if $f$ is an operator Lipschitz function analytic in ${\Bbb D}$, then $f(T)-f(R)\in\boldsymbol{S}_1$. The main result of the note says that there exists a function $\boldsymbolξ$ (a spectral shift function) on the unit circle ${\Bbb T}$ of class $L^1({\Bbb T})$ such that the following trace formula holds: $\operatorname{trace}(f(T…
We define a new class of singular positive traces on the ideal $\mathcal M_{1,\infty}$ of $B(H)$ generated by exponentiation invariant generalized limits. We prove that this new class is strictly contained in the class of all Dixmier traces. We also prove a Lidskii-type formula for this class of traces.
It is shown that for a certain class of the Kato functions the Trotter-Kato product formulae converge in Dixmier ideal C 1,$\infty$ in topology, which is defined by the $\times$ 1,$\infty$-norm. Moreover, the rate of convergence in this topology inherits the error-bound estimate for the corresponding operator-norm convergence. 1 since [24], [14]. Note that a subtle point of this program is the question about the rate of convergence in the corresponding topology. Since the limit of the Trotter-Kato product formula is a strongly continuous semigroup, for the von Neumann-Schatten ideals this topo…
We prove that the Berkovich space of the algebra of bounded analytic functions on the open unit disk of an algebraically closed nonarchimedean field contains multiplicative seminorms that are not norms and whose kernel is not a maximal ideal. We also prove that in general these seminorms are not univocally determined by their kernels, and provide a method for obtaining families of different seminorms sharing the same kernel. On the other hand, we prove that there are also kernels that cannot be obtained by that method. The relation with the Berkovich space of the Tate algebra is also given.
In the present paper we prove that the classes of Dixmier and Connes-Dixmier traces differ even on the Dixmier ideal $\mathcal M_{1,\infty}$. We construct a Marcinkiewicz space $\mathcal M_ψ$ and a positive operator $T\in \mathcal M_ψ$ which is Connes-Dixmier measurable but which is not Dixmier measurable.
We characterize the algebra $H^\infty \circ L_{m}$, where $m$ is a point of the maximal ideal space of $H^\infty$ with nontrivial Gleason part $P(m)$ and $L_{m} : \mathbb{D}\to P(m)$ is the coordinate Hoffman map. In particular, it is shown that for any continuous function $f: P(m) \to \mathbb{C}$ with $f\circ L_{m} \in H^\infty$ there exists $F\in H^\infty$ such that $F|_{P(m)} = f$.
We strengthen, in various directions, the theorem of Garnett that every $σ$-compact, completely regular space $X$ occurs as a Gleason part for some uniform algebra. In particular, we show that the uniform algebra can always be chosen so that its maximal ideal space contains no analytic discs. We show that when the space $X$ is metrizable, the uniform algebra can be chosen so that its maximal ideal space is metrizable as well. We also show that for every locally compact subspace $X$ of a Euclidean space, there is a compact set $K$ in some ${\mathbb C}^N$ so that $\hat K \setminus K$ contains a …
We study the relationships between Dixmier traces, zeta-functions and traces of heat semigroups beyond the dual of the Macaev ideal and in the general context of semifinite von Neumann algebras. We show that the correct framework for this investigation is that of operator Lorentz spaces possessing an extrapolation description. We demonstrate the applicability of our results to Hörmander-Weyl pseudo-differential calculus. In that context, we prove that the Dixmier trace of a pseudo-differential operator coincide with the `Dixmier integral' of its symbol.
Let F denote either the real or complex field. An ideal I in the free *-algebra F<x,x*> in g freely noncommuting variables and their formal adjoints is a *-ideal if I = I*. When a real *-ideal has finite codimension, it satisfies a strong Nullstellensatz. Without the finite codimension assumption, there are examples of such ideals which do not satisfy, very liberally interpreted, any Nullstellensatz. A polynomial p in F<x,x*> is analytic if it is a polynomial in the variables {x} only; that is if p in F<x>. As shown in this article, *-ideals generated by analytic polynomials do satisfy a natur…
Given a complex domain $Ω$ and analytic functions $φ_1,\ldots,φ_n : Ω\to \mathbb{D}$, we give geometric conditions for $H^\infty(Ω)$ to be generated by functions of the form $g \circ φ_k$, $g \in H^\infty(\mathbb{D})$. We apply these results to the extension of bounded functions on an analytic one-dimensional complex subvariety of the polydisk $\mathbb{D}^n$ to functions in the Schur-Agler algebra of $\mathbb{D}^n$, with an estimate on the norm of the extension. Our proofs use some extension of the techniques of separation of singularities by Havin, Nersessian and Ortega-Cerdá.
In this paper we give precise characterizations of the relation between the Nevanlinna counting function and pull-back measure of an analytic self-map of the unit disk near the boundary. We show that it is quite worth considering these two concepts on the maximal ideal space of the bounded analytic functions.
