Monitor of All sky X-ray Image (MAXI) discovered a new outburst of an X-ray transient source named MAXI J1421-613. Because of the detection of three X-ray bursts from the source, it was identified as a neutron star low-mass X-ray binary. The results of data analyses of the MAXI GSC and the Swift XRT follow-up observations suggest that the spectral hardness remained unchanged during the first two weeks of the outburst. All the XRT spectra in the 0.5-10 keV band can be well explained by thermal Comptonization of multi-color disk blackbody emission. The photon index of the Comptonized component is $\approx$ 2, which is typical of low-mass X-ray binaries in the low/hard state. Since X-ray bursts have a maximum peak luminosity, it is possible to estimate the (maximum) distance from its observed peak flux. The peak flux of the second X-ray burst, which was observed by the GSC, is about 5 photons cm$^{-2}$ s$^{-1}$. By assuming a blackbody spectrum of 2.5 keV, the maximum distance to the source is estimated as 7 kpc. The position of this source is contained by the large error regions of two bright X-ray sources detected with Orbiting Solar Observatory-7 (OSO-7) in 1970s. Besides this, no past activities at the XRT position are reported in the literature. If MAXI J1421-613 is the same source as (one of) them, the outburst observed with MAXI may have occurred after the quiescence of 30-40 years.
To observationally study spin-period changes of accreting pulsars caused by the accretion torque, the present work analyzes X-ray light curves of 12 Be binary pulsars obtained by the MAXI/GSC all-sky survey and their pulse periods measured by the Fermi/GBM pulsar project, both covering more than 6 years from 2009 August to 2016 March. The 12 objects were selected because they are accompanied by clear optical identification, and accurate measurements of surface magnetic fields. The luminosity $L$ and the spin-frequency derivatives $\dotν$, measured during large outbursts with $L\gtrsim 1\times …
We investigated the decades' long-term X-ray variations in bright low-mass X-ray binaries containing a neutron star (NS-LMXB). The light curves of MAXI/GSC and RXTE/ASM covers $\sim$ 26 yr, and high-quality X-ray light curves are obtained from 33 NS-LMXBs. Among them, together with Ginga/ASM, two sources (GX 3$+$1 and GX 9$+$1) showed an apparent sinusoidal variation with the period of $\sim 5$ yr and $\sim 10$ yr in the 34 yr light curve. Their X-ray luminosities were $(1-4)\times10^{37}$ erg s$^{-1}$ in the middle of the luminosity distribution of the NS-LMXB. Other seven sources (Ser X-1, 4…
We searched for precursive soft X-ray flashes (SXFs) associated with optically-discovered classical or recurrent novae in the data of five-years all-sky observations with Gas Slit Camera (GSC) of the Monitor of All-sky X-ray Image (MAXI). We first developed a tool to measure fluxes of point sources by fitting the event distribution with the model that incorporates the point-spread function (PSF-fit) to minimize the potential contamination from nearby sources. Then we applied the PSF-fit tool to 40 classical/recurrent novae that were discovered in optical observations from 2009 August to 2014 A…
We report the MAXI observation of the gravitational-wave (GW) event GW170817 and the electromagnetic counterpart of GW170817. GW170817 is a binary neutron star coalescence candidate detected by the Advanced LIGO and Advanced Virgo detectors, and it is the first event for which the optical counterpart has been discovered. In the MAXI observation, the Gas Slit Camera (GSC) covered approximately 62% of the sky region of the GW event within 90% probability during the first 92 min of orbit after the trigger. No significant X-ray transient was detected in the error region, and the upper limit of the…
We present a spectral-timing analysis of observations taken in fall 2017 of the newly detected X-ray transient MAXI J1535-571. We included 38 Swift/XRT window timing mode observations, three XMM-Newton observations and 31 NICER observations in our study. We computed the fundamental diagrams commonly used to study black hole transients, and fitted power density and energy spectra to study the evolution of spectral and timing parameters. The observed properties are consistent with a bright black hole X-ray binary ($F_{\mathrm{0.6-10 keV}}^{\mathrm{max}}=3.71\pm0.02\times10^{-7}$ erg cm$^{-2}$ s$…
We report on a \textit{NuSTAR} and \textit{Swift}/XRT observation of the newly discovered X-ray transient MAXI J1820+070. \textit{Swift}/XRT and \textit{NuSTAR} have concurrently observed the newly detected source on 14 March 2018. We have simultaneously fitted the broad-band spectra obtained from \textit{Swift}/XRT and \textit{NuSTAR}. The observed joint spectra in the energy range 0.6--78.0 keV are well modeled with a weak disk black-body emission, dominant thermal Comptonization and relativistic reflection fraction. We have detected a fluorescent Iron-K$α$ line relativistically broadened, a…
We present spectral and timing properties of the newly discovered X-ray transient source, MAXI J1535-571, which is believed to be a Galactic X-ray binary containing a black hole candidate (BHC) as the primary object. After its discovery on 2017 Sep. 2, it has been monitored regularly in multi-wavelength bands by several satellites. We use archival data of Swift (XRT and BAT) and MAXI (GSC) satellite instruments to study accretion flow dynamics of the source during the outburst. During its outburst, the source became very bright in the sky with a maximum observed flux of $5$~Crab in the $2-10$~…
We present a detailed timing analysis of the bright black hole X-ray binary MAXI J1820+070 (ASASSN-18ey), during its first detected outburst lasting from March 2018 until October 2019 based on Swift/XRT window timing mode observations, corresponding UVOT data and NICER observations. The light curves clearly show four outbursts, with the source remaining in the hard state during its first outburst, while the rise of the second outburst corresponds with the transition to the soft state. A similar double outburst of GX339-4 has been observed in 2004. Here it is followed by two hard-state only out…
We present the detection of a blackbody component in GRB 160107A emission by using the combined spectral data of the CALET Gamma-ray Burst Monitor (CGBM) and the MAXI Gas Slit Camera (GSC). The MAXI/GSC detected the emission $\sim$45 s prior to the main burst episode observed by the CGBM. The MAXI/GSC and the CGBM spectrum of this prior emission period is well fit by a blackbody with the temperature of $1.0^{+0.3}_{-0.2}$ keV plus a power-law with the photon index of $-1.6 \pm 0.3$. We discuss the radius to the photospheric emission and the main burst emission based on the observational proper…
MAXI J1957+032 is a transient Low-mass X-ray binary (LMXB) that underwent four short outbursts in 1.5 years since its discovery in 2015. The nature of the compact object in MAXI J1957+032 is not clear, but it was proposed to be a neutron star based on the short-duration of its outbursts. Here, we report the results obtained after performing spectral analysis using data obtained with the X-ray telescope aboard the Neil Gehrels Swift satellite. When describing the spectrum with an absorbed power law, we found that the spectra softens (the power-law index increases from $\sim$ 1.8 to 2.5) as the …
23 giant flares from 13 active stars (eight RS CVn systems, one Algol system, three dMe stars and one YSO) were detected during the first two years of our all-sky X-ray monitoring with the gas propotional counters (GSC) of the Monitor of All-sky X-ray Image (MAXI). The observed parameters of all of these MAXI/GSC flares are found to be at the upper ends for stellar flares with the luminosity of 10^(31-34) ergs s-1 in the 2-20 keV band, the emission measure of 10^(54-57) cm-3, the e-folding time of 1 hour to 1.5 days, and the total radiative energy released during the flare of 10^(34-39) ergs. …
This paper reports on the X-ray emission evolution of the ultra-luminous Galactic X-ray pulsar, Swift J0243.6+6124, during the 2017-2018 giant outburst observed by the MAXI GSC. The 2-30 keV light curve and the energy spectra confirm that the luminosity $L_\mathrm{X}$ reached $2.5\times 10^{39}$ erg s$^{-1}$, 10 times higher than the Eddington limit. When the source was luminous with $L_\mathrm{X}\gtrsim 0.9\times 10^{38}$ erg s$^{-1}$, it exhibited a negative correlation on a hardness-intensity diagram. However, two hardness ratios, a soft color ($=$ 4-10 keV / 2-4 keV) and a hard color ($=$ …
Galactic black hole candidate MAXI J1910-057/Swift J1910.2-0546 was simultaneously discovered by MAXI/GSC and Swift/BAT satellites during its first outburst in 2012. We study the detailed spectral and temporal properties of the source in a broad energy range using archival data from Swift/XRT, MAXI/GSC and Swift/BAT satellites/instruments. Low frequency quasi periodic oscillations are observed during the outburst. The combined 1-50 keV spectra are analyzed using the transonic flow solution based Two Component Advective Flow (TCAF) model. Based on the variations of soft and hard X-ray fluxes, t…
We report on the detection and follow-up multi-wavelength observations of the new X-ray transient MAXI J1807+132 with the MAXI/GSC, Swift, and ground-based optical telescopes. The source was first recognized with the MAXI/GSC on 2017 March 13. About a week later, it reached the maximum intensity ($\sim$10 mCrab in 2-10 keV), and then gradually faded in $\sim$10 days by more than one order of magnitude. Time-averaged Swift/XRT spectra in the decaying phase can be described by a blackbody with a relatively low temperature (0.1-0.5 keV), plus a hard power-law component with a photon index of $\si…
We present results for the first observed outburst from the transient X-ray binary source MAXI J0637-430. This study is based on eight observations from the Nuclear Spectroscopic Telescope Array (NuSTAR) and six observations from the Neil Gehrels Swift Observatory X-Ray Telescope (Swift/XRT) collected from 2019 November 19 to 2020 April 26 as the 3-79 keV source flux declined from 8.2e-10 to 1.4e-12 erg/cm^2/s. We see the source transition from a soft state with a strong disk-blackbody component to a hard state dominated by a power-law or thermal Comptonization component. NuSTAR provides the f…
We present the third MAXI/GSC catalog in the high Galactic-latitude sky ($|b| > 10^\circ$) based on the 7-year data from 2009 August 13 to 2016 July 31, complementary to that in the low Galactic-latitude sky ($|b| < 10^\circ$; Hori et al. 2018). We compile 682 sources detected at significances of $s_{\rm D,4-10~keV} \geq 6.5$ in the 4--10 keV band. A two-dimensional image fit based on the Poisson likelihood algorithm ($C$-statistics) is adopted for the detections and constraints on their fluxes and positions. The 4--10 keV sensitivity reaches $\approx 0.48$ mCrab, or $\approx 5.9 \times 10^{-1…
Long-lasting emission of short gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) is crucial to reveal the physical origin of the central engine as well as to detect electromagnetic (EM) counterparts to gravitational waves (GWs) from neutron star binary mergers. We investigate 65 X-ray light curves of short GRBs, which is six times more than previous studies, by combining both Swift/BAT and XRT data. The light curves are found to consist of two distinct components at $>5σ$ with bimodal distributions of luminosity and duration, i.e., extended (with timescale $\lesssim10^3$ s) and plateau emission (with timescale $\gtrsim…
We report on the detection and subsequent X-ray monitoring of the new Galactic black hole candidate MAXI J1535-571 with the MAXI/GSC. Afterthe discovery on 2017 September 2 made independently with MAXI and the Swift/BAT, the source brightened gradually, and in a few weeks, reached the peak intensity of ~5 Crab, or ~1.6 x 10^{-7} erg cm^{-2} s^{-1} in terms of the 2--20 keV flux. On the initial outburst rise, the X-ray spectrum was described by a power-law model with a photon index of ~2, while after a hard-to-soft transition which occurred on September 18, the spectrum required a disk blackbod…
We present a comprehensive spectral and temporal study of the black hole X-ray transient MAXI J1820+070 during its outbursts in 2018 using Swift/XRT, NICER, NuSTAR and AstroSat observations. The Swift/XRT and NICER spectral study shows a plateau in the light curve with spectral softening (hardness changes from $\sim$ $2.5$ to $2$) followed by a gradual decline without spectral softening during the first outburst. Also, spectral modelling suggests that the first outburst is in the low/hard state throughout with a truncated disk whereas the thermal disk emission dominates during the second outbu…
We have performed a detailed analysis of the X-ray spectra of the blazar Mkn 421 using Swift-XRT observations taken between 2005 and 2020, to quantify the correlations between spectral parameters for different models. In an earlier work, it has been shown that such spectral parameter correlations obtained from a single short flare of duration $\sim$ 5-days of Mkn 421, can be used to distinguish spectrally degenerate models and provide estimates of physical quantities. In this work, we show that the results from the long-term spectral parameter correlations are consistent with those obtained fr…
Galactic transient black hole candidate (BHC) MAXI~J1836-194 was discovered on 2011 Aug 30, by MAXI/GSC and Swift/BAT. The source activity during this outburst was continued for ~3 months before entering into the quiescent state. It again became active in March 2012 and continued for another ~2 months. In this paper, 3-25 keV RXTE/PCA spectra of 2011 outburst and 0.5-10.0 keV Swift/XRT data during its 2012 outburst are analyzed with the two-component advective flow (TCAF) model based fits file in XSPEC. We calculate the X-ray contributions coming from jets/outflow using a newly developed metho…
MAXI J1803-298, a newly-discovered Galactic transient and black hole candidate, was first detected by \emph{MAXI}/GSC on May 1st, 2021. In this paper, we present a detailed spectral analysis of MAXI J1803-298. Utilizing the X-ray reflection fitting method, we perform a joint fit to the spectra of MAXI J1803-298, respectively, observed by \emph{NuSTAR} and \emph{NICER}/XTI on the same day over the energy range between 0.7-79.0 keV, and found its spin (and the inclination angle i) can be constrained to be close to an extreme value, 0.991 ($i\sim$ $70 ^{\circ}$), at 68\% confidence interval. The …
The error region of the the gravitational-wave (GW) event GW151226 was observed with Monitor of All-sky X-ray Image (MAXI). MAXI was operated at the time of GW151226, and continuously observed to 4 minutes after the event. MAXI covered about 84% of the 90 percent error region of the GW event during the first 92 minutes orbit after the event. No significant X-ray transient was detected in the GW error region. A typical 3-$σ$ GSC upper limit for a scan is 1.2 $\times 10^{-9}$ ergs cm$^{-2}$ s$^{-1}$ in the 2-20 keV. The auto-detection (MAXI nova-search) systems detected a short excess event with…
Galactic black hole candidate MAXI~J1348-630 was recently discovered by {\it MAXI} and {\it Swift}/BAT satellites during its first outburst in 2019 January which continued for $\sim4$ months. We study the spectral and timing properties of the source in detail. The combined $1-150$ keV {\it Swift}/XRT, {\it Swift}/BAT and {\it MAXI}/GSC spectra are investigated with the two component advective flow (TCAF) solution. Physical flow parameters of TCAF, such as the Keplerian disk accretion rate, the sub-Keplerian halo accretion rate, the shock location and the shock compression ratio are estimated f…
During a period of strong $γ$-ray flaring activity from BL Lacertae, we organized Swift, Neutron star Interior Composition Explorer (NICER), and Nuclear Spectroscopic Telescope Array (NuSTAR) follow-up observations. The source has been monitored by Swift-XRT (X-ray Telescope) between 2020 August 11 and October 16, showing a variability amplitude of 65, with a flux varying between 1.0 $\times$ 10$^{-11}$ and 65.3 $\times$ 10$^{-11}$ erg cm$^{-2}$ s$^{-1}$. On 2020 October 6, Swift-XRT has observed the source during its historical maximum X-ray flux. A softer-when-brighter behaviour has been obs…
The Chandra X-ray Observatory (CXO) imaged the high-mass gamma-ray binary (HMGB) HESS J0632+057 with the Advanced CCD Imaging Spectrometer (ACIS). We analyzed the CXO data together with 967 ks of archival Swift-XRT observations. On arcsecond scales we find a hint of asymmetric extended emission. On arcminute scales, a region of extended emission ("the blob"), located $\sim$5.5' east of the binary, is seen in both the CXO-ACIS and the Swift-XRT images. The blob does not have a counterpart in the radio, NIR, IR, or optical images. The ACIS spectrum of the blob fits either an absorbed power-law m…
We analyzed continuous MAXI/GSC data of the X-ray binary pulsar 4U 1626-67 from 2009 October to 2013 September, and determined the pulse period and the pulse-period derivative for every 60-d interval by the epoch folding method. The obtained periods are consistent with those provided by the Fermi/GBM pulsar project. In all the 60-d intervals, the pulsar was observed to spin up, with the spin-up rate positively correlated with the 2-20 keV flux. We applied the accretion torque model proposed by Ghosh & Lamb (1979, ApJ, 234, 296) to the MAXI/GSC data, as well as the past data including both spin…
We present the results of our study of the X-ray spectrum for the source X-6 in the nearby galaxy M33 obtained for the first time at energies above 10 keV from the data of the NuSTAR orbital telescope. The archival Swift-XRT data for energy coverage below 3 keV have been used, which has allowed the spectrum of M33 X-6 to be constructed in the wide energy range 0.3-20 keV. The spectrum of the source is well described by the model of an optically and geometrically thick accretion disk with a maximum temperature of ~2 keV and an inner radius of ~5 cos^{-1/2}(theta) km (where "theta" is the unknow…
Thermonuclear X-ray bursts from accreting neutron stars power brief but strong irradiation of their surroundings, providing a unique way to study accretion physics. We analyze MAXI/GSC and Swift/XRT spectra of a day-long flash observed from IGR J17062-6143 in 2015. It is a rare case of recurring bursts at a low accretion luminosity of 0.15% Eddington. Spectra from MAXI, Chandra, and NuSTAR observations taken between the 2015 burst and the previous one in 2012 are used to determine the accretion column. We find it to be consistent with the burst ignition column of 5x10^10 g cm^-2, which indicat…
We study the spectral and temporal properties of MAXI J0637-430 during its 2019-2020 outburst using \textit{NICER}, \textit{AstroSat} and \textit{Swift-XRT} data. The source was in a disc dominant state within a day of its detection and traces out a `c' shaped profile in the HID, similar to the `mini'-outbursts of the recurrent BHB 4U 1630-472. Energy spectrum is obtained in the $0.5-10$ keV band with \textit{NICER} and \textit{Swift-XRT}, and $0.5-25$ keV with \textit{AstroSat}. The spectra can be modelled using a multicolour disc emission (\textit{diskbb}) convolved with a thermal Comptonisa…
We report on the X-ray spectral analysis and time evolution of GRS 1739$-$278 during its 2014 outburst based on MAXI/GSC and Swift/XRT observations. Over the course of the outburst, a transition from the low/hard state to the high/soft state and then back to the low/hard state was seen. During the high/soft state, the innermost disk temperature mildly decreased, while the innermost radius estimated with the multi-color disk model remained constant at $\sim18\ (\frac{D}{8.5\ \mathrm{kpc}}) \ {(\frac{\cos i}{\cos 30^{\circ}})}^{-1/2}$ km, where $D$ is the source distance and $i$ is the inclinati…
