We present the first results on the black hole candidate XTE J1752-223 from the Gas Slit Camera (GSC) on-board the Monitor of All-sky X-ray Image (MAXI) on the International Space Station. Including the onset of the outburst reported by the Proportional Counter Array on-board the Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer on 2009 October 23, the MAXI/GSC has been monitoring this source approximately 10 times per day with a high sensitivity in the 2-20 keV band. XTE J1752-223 was initially in the low/hard state during the first 3 months. An anti-correlated behavior between the 2-4 keV and 4-20 keV bands were observed around January 20, 2010, indicating that the source exhibited the spectral transition to the high/soft state. A transient radio jet may have been ejected when the source was in the intermediate state where the spectrum was roughly explained by a power-law with a photon index of 2.5-3.0. The unusually long period in the initial low/hard state implies a slow variation in the mass accretion rate, and the dramatic soft X-ray increase may be explained by a sudden appearance of the accretion disk component with a relatively low innermost temperature (0.4-0.7 keV). Such a low temperature might suggest that the maximum accretion rate was just above the critical gas evaporation rate required for the state transition.
We present the luminosity dwell-time distributions during the hard states of low-mass X-ray binaries containing a neutron star, 4U 1608-52 and AqlX-1, observed with MAXI/GSC. The luminosity distributions show a steep cut-off in the low-luminosity side at $\sim1.0 \times 10^{36}$ erg s$^{-1}$ in both the two sources. The cut-off implies a rapid luminosity decrease in their outburst decay phases, and the feature can be interpreted as due the propeller effect. We estimated the surface magnetic field of the neutron star to be (0.5--1.6) $\times 10^8$ G in 4U 1608-52 and (0.6--1.9) $\times 10^8$ G …
We report on the X-ray spectral analysis of the black hole candidate XTE\ J1752--223 in the 2009--2010 outburst, utilizing data obtained with the MAXI/Gas Slit Camera (GSC), the Swift/XRT, and Suzaku, which work complementarily. As already reported by Nakahira et al. (2010) MAXI monitored the source continuously throughout the entire outburst for about eight months. All the MAXI/GSC energy spectra in the high/soft state lasting for 2 months are well represented by a multi-color disk plus power-law model. The innermost disk temperature changed from $\sim$0.7 keV to $\sim$0.4 keV and the disk fl…
We carry out a detailed study of the spectral and the timing properties of the stellar-mass black hole candidate XTE J1752-223 during its 2009-10 outburst using RXTE PCA data in the $2.5-25$ keV energy range. Low frequency quasi-periodic oscillations (LFQPOs) are seen in the power density spectrum (PDS). The spectral analysis is done using two types of models: one is the combined disk black body plus power-law model and the other is Transonic flow solution based Two Component Advective Flow (TCAF) model. RXTE PCA was non-operational during 2009 Nov. 16 to 2010 Jan. 18 and thus we study light c…
We present the newly developed broadband transient monitor using the Swift Burst Alert Telescope (BAT) and the MAXI Gas Slit Camera (GSC) data. Our broadband transient monitor monitors high energy transient sources from 2 keV to 200 keV in seven energy bands by combining the BAT (15-200 keV) and the GSC (2-20 keV) data. Currently, the daily and the 90-minute (one orbit) averaged light curves are available for 106 high energy transient sources. Our broadband transient monitor is available to the public through our web server, http://yoshidalab.mydns.jp/bat_gsc_trans_mon/, for a wider use by the…
Over the 3-year active period from 2008 September to 2011 November, the outburst behavior of the Be/X-ray binary A 0535+26 was continuously monitored with the MAXI/GSC and the Swift/BAT. The source exhibited nine outbursts, every binary revolution of 111.1 days, of which two are categorized into the giant (type-II) outbursts. The recurrence period of these outbursts is found to be $\sim115$ days, significantly longer than the orbital period of 111.1 days. With the MAXI/GSC, a low-level active period, or a "precursor", was detected prior to at least four giant outbursts. The precursor recurrenc…
We present the first results on the new black hole candidate, MAXI J1305-704, observed by MAXI/GSC. The new X-ray transient, named as MAXI J1305-704, was first detected by the MAXI-GSC all-sky survey on 2012 April 9 in the direction to the outer Galactic bulge at (l,b)=(304.2deg,-7.6deg). The Swift/XRT follow-up observation confirmed the uncatalogued point source and localized to the position at (13h06m56s.44,-70d27'4".91). The source continued the activity for about five months until 2012 August. The MAXI/GSC light curve in the 2--10 keV band and the variation of the hardness ratio of the 4-1…
We study the relation between luminosity and spin-period change in X-ray binary pulsars using long-term light curve obtained by the MAXI/GSC all-sky survey and pulse period data from the Fermi/GBM pulsar project. X-ray binaries, consisting of a highly magnetized neutron star and a stellar companion, originate X-ray emission according to the energy of the accretion matter onto the neutron star. The accretion matter also transfers the angular momentum at the Alfven radius, and then spin up the neutron star. Therefore, the X-ray luminosity and the spin-up rate are supposed to be well correlated. …
Monitor of All sky X-ray Image (MAXI) discovered a new outburst of an X-ray transient source named MAXI J1421-613. Because of the detection of three X-ray bursts from the source, it was identified as a neutron star low-mass X-ray binary. The results of data analyses of the MAXI GSC and the Swift XRT follow-up observations suggest that the spectral hardness remained unchanged during the first two weeks of the outburst. All the XRT spectra in the 0.5-10 keV band can be well explained by thermal Comptonization of multi-color disk blackbody emission. The photon index of the Comptonized component i…
To observationally study spin-period changes of accreting pulsars caused by the accretion torque, the present work analyzes X-ray light curves of 12 Be binary pulsars obtained by the MAXI/GSC all-sky survey and their pulse periods measured by the Fermi/GBM pulsar project, both covering more than 6 years from 2009 August to 2016 March. The 12 objects were selected because they are accompanied by clear optical identification, and accurate measurements of surface magnetic fields. The luminosity $L$ and the spin-frequency derivatives $\dotν$, measured during large outbursts with $L\gtrsim 1\times …
We investigated the decades' long-term X-ray variations in bright low-mass X-ray binaries containing a neutron star (NS-LMXB). The light curves of MAXI/GSC and RXTE/ASM covers $\sim$ 26 yr, and high-quality X-ray light curves are obtained from 33 NS-LMXBs. Among them, together with Ginga/ASM, two sources (GX 3$+$1 and GX 9$+$1) showed an apparent sinusoidal variation with the period of $\sim 5$ yr and $\sim 10$ yr in the 34 yr light curve. Their X-ray luminosities were $(1-4)\times10^{37}$ erg s$^{-1}$ in the middle of the luminosity distribution of the NS-LMXB. Other seven sources (Ser X-1, 4…
X-ray variabilities with spectral state transitions in bright low mass X-ray binaries containing a neutron star are investigated by using the one-day bin light curves of MAXI/GSC (Gas Slit Camera) and Swift/BAT (Burst Alert Telescope). Four sources (4U 1636$-$536, 4U 1705$-$44, 4U 1608$-$52, and GS 1826$-$238) exhibited small-amplitude X-ray variabilities with spectral state transitions. Such "mini-outbursts" were characterized by smaller amplitudes (several times) and shorter duration (less than several tens of days) than those of "normal outbursts." Theoretical model of disk instability by M…
We searched for precursive soft X-ray flashes (SXFs) associated with optically-discovered classical or recurrent novae in the data of five-years all-sky observations with Gas Slit Camera (GSC) of the Monitor of All-sky X-ray Image (MAXI). We first developed a tool to measure fluxes of point sources by fitting the event distribution with the model that incorporates the point-spread function (PSF-fit) to minimize the potential contamination from nearby sources. Then we applied the PSF-fit tool to 40 classical/recurrent novae that were discovered in optical observations from 2009 August to 2014 A…
We present a large X-ray flare from a nearby weak-lined T Tauri star TWA-7 detected with the Gas Slit Camera (GSC) on the Monitor of All-sky X-ray Image (MAXI). The GSC captured X-ray flaring from TWA-7 with a flux of $3\times10^{-9}$ ergs cm$^{-2}$ s$^{-1}$ in 2--20 keV band during the scan transit starting at UT 2010-09-07 18:24:30.The estimated X-ray luminosity at the scan in the energy band is 3$\times10^{32}$ ergs s$^{-1}$,indicating that the event is among the largest X-ray flares fromT Tauri stars.Since MAXI GSC monitors a target only during a scan transit of about a minute per 92 min o…
We present the catalog of high Galactic-latitude ($|b|>10^{\circ}$) X-ray sources detected in the first 37-month data of Monitor of All-sky X-ray Image (MAXI) / Gas Slit Camera (GSC). To achieve the best sensitivity, we develop a background model of the GSC that well reproduces the data based on the detailed on-board calibration. Source detection is performed through image fit with the Poisson likelihood algorithm. The catalog contains 500 objects detected in the 4--10 keV band with significance of $s_{\rm D, 4-10 keV} \geq 7$. The limiting sensitivity is $\approx 7.5\times10^{-12}$ ergs cm$^{…
We report the most recent results of our analysis of X-ray monitoring of new Galactic Black Hole (BH) candidates XTE J1752-225 and MAXI J1659-152 performed by Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer (RXTE). We investigate various aspects of the RXTE data including energy and power spectra, variability energy distribution and phase lags between soft and hard energy bands. The sources generally exhibit the spectral states and evolution expected from an accreting stellar mass BH. The energy distribution of different variability components show that the aperiodic noise has a spectrum consistently softer with …
We report on the MAXI GSC X-ray monitoring of the Crab nebula and pulsar during the GeV gamma-ray flare for the period of 2010 September 18-24 (MJD 55457-55463) detected by AGILE and Fermi-LAT. There were no significant variations on the pulse phase averaged and pulsed fluxes during the gamma-ray flare on time scales from 0.5 to 5 days. The pulse profile also showed no significant change during this period. The upper limits on the variations of the pulse phase averaged and pulsed fluxes for the period MJD 55457.5-55462.5 in the 4-10 keV band are derived to be 1 and 19%, respectively, at the 90…
A report is made on the luminosity and pulse-period evolution of the Be binary X-ray pulsar, GX 304$-$1, during a series of outbursts from 2009 to 2013 observed by MAXI/GSC, RXTE/PCA, and Fermi/GBM. In total, twelve outbursts repeated by $\sim$ 132.2 days were observed, which is consistent with the X-ray periodicity of this object observed in the 1970s. These 12 outbursts, together with those in the 1970s, were found to all recur with a well defined period of 132.189$\pm$0.02 d, which can be identified with the orbital period. The pulse period at $\sim 275$ s, obtained from the RXTE/PCA and Fe…
We report the MAXI observation of the gravitational-wave (GW) event GW170817 and the electromagnetic counterpart of GW170817. GW170817 is a binary neutron star coalescence candidate detected by the Advanced LIGO and Advanced Virgo detectors, and it is the first event for which the optical counterpart has been discovered. In the MAXI observation, the Gas Slit Camera (GSC) covered approximately 62% of the sky region of the GW event within 90% probability during the first 92 min of orbit after the trigger. No significant X-ray transient was detected in the error region, and the upper limit of the…
Monitor of All-sky X-ray Image (MAXI) is mounted on the International Space Station (ISS). Since 2009 it has been scanning the whole sky in every 92 minutes with ISS rotation. Due to high particle background at high latitude regions the carbon anodes of three GSC cameras were broken. We limit the GSC operation to low-latitude region around equator. GSC is suffering a double high background from Gamma-ray altimeter of Soyuz spacecraft. MAXI issued the 37-month catalog with 500 sources above ~0.6 mCrab in 4-10 keV. MAXI issued 133 to Astronomers Telegram and 44 to Gammaray burst Coordinated Netw…
We present the first unbiased source catalog of the Monitor of All-sky X-ray Image (MAXI) mission at high Galactic latitudes ($|b| > 10^{\circ}$), produced from the first 7-month data (2009 September 1 to 2010 March 31) of the Gas Slit Camera in the 4--10 keV band. We develop an analysis procedure to detect faint sources from the MAXI data, utilizing a maximum likelihood image fitting method, where the image response, background, and detailed observational conditions are taken into account. The catalog consists of 143 X-ray sources above 7 sigma significance level with a limiting sensitivity o…
We present the results of monitoring the Galactic black hole candidate GX 339-4 with the Monitor of All-sky X-ray Image (MAXI) / Gas Slit Camera (GSC) in the high/soft state during the outburst in 2010. All the spectra throughout the 8-month period are well reproduced with a model consisting of multi-color disk (MCD) emission and its Comptonization component, whose fraction is <= 25% in the total flux. In spite of the flux variability over a factor of 3, the innermost disk radius is constant at R_in = 61 +/- 2 km for the inclination angle of i = 46 deg and the distance of d=8 kpc. This R_in va…
Monitor of all-sky image (MAXI) Gas Slit Camera (GSC) detects gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) including the bursts with soft spectra, such as X-ray flashes (XRFs). MAXI/GSC is sensitive to the energy range from 2 to 30 keV. This energy range is lower than other currently operating instruments which is capable of detecting GRBs. Since the beginning of the MAXI operation on August 15, 2009, GSC observed 35 GRBs up to the middle of 2013. One third of them are also observed by other satellites. The rest of them show a trend to have soft spectra and low fluxes. Because of the contribution of those XRFs, th…
We present the detection of a blackbody component in GRB 160107A emission by using the combined spectral data of the CALET Gamma-ray Burst Monitor (CGBM) and the MAXI Gas Slit Camera (GSC). The MAXI/GSC detected the emission $\sim$45 s prior to the main burst episode observed by the CGBM. The MAXI/GSC and the CGBM spectrum of this prior emission period is well fit by a blackbody with the temperature of $1.0^{+0.3}_{-0.2}$ keV plus a power-law with the photon index of $-1.6 \pm 0.3$. We discuss the radius to the photospheric emission and the main burst emission based on the observational proper…
We present radio coverage of the 2019 outburst of the accreting millisecond X-ray pulsar SAX J1808.4-3658, obtained with MeerKAT. We compare these data to contemporaneous X-ray and optical measurements in order to investigate the coupling between accretion and jet formation in this system, while the optical lightcurve provides greater detail of the outburst. The reflaring activity following the main outburst peak was associated with a radio re-brightening, indicating a strengthening of the jet in this phase of the outburst. We place quasi-simultaneous radio and X-ray measurements on the global…
This paper reports on the X-ray emission evolution of the ultra-luminous Galactic X-ray pulsar, Swift J0243.6+6124, during the 2017-2018 giant outburst observed by the MAXI GSC. The 2-30 keV light curve and the energy spectra confirm that the luminosity $L_\mathrm{X}$ reached $2.5\times 10^{39}$ erg s$^{-1}$, 10 times higher than the Eddington limit. When the source was luminous with $L_\mathrm{X}\gtrsim 0.9\times 10^{38}$ erg s$^{-1}$, it exhibited a negative correlation on a hardness-intensity diagram. However, two hardness ratios, a soft color ($=$ 4-10 keV / 2-4 keV) and a hard color ($=$ …
A search for optical counterparts in quiescent black hole X-ray transients
Instituto de Astrofísica de Canarias(加那利天体物理研究所);Universidad de La Laguna(拉古纳大学);University of Sheffield(谢菲尔德大学);University of Cambridge(剑桥大学);Radboud University(拉德堡德大学)
We present near-infrared and optical imaging of fifteen candidate black hole X-ray binaries. In addition to quiescent observations for all sources, we also observed two of these sources (IGR J17451-3022 and XTE J1818-245) in outburst. We detect the quiescent counterpart for twelve out of fifteen sources, and for the remaining three we report limiting magnitudes. The magnitudes of the detected counterparts range between $K_s$ = 17.59 and $K_s$ = 22.29 mag. We provide (limits on) the absolute magnitudes and finding charts of all sources. Of these twelve detections in quiescence, seven represent …
We report the in-orbit performance of the Gas Slit Camera (GSC) on the MAXI (Monitor of All-sky X-ray Image) mission carried on the International Space Station (ISS). Its commissioning operation started on August 8, 2009, confirmed the basic performances of the effective area in the energy band of 2--30 keV, the spatial resolution of the slit-and-slat collimator and detector with 1.5 degree FWHM, the source visibility of 40-150 seconds for each scan cycle, and the sky coverage of 85% per 92-minute orbital period and 95% per day. The gas gains and read-out amplifier gains have been stable withi…
23 giant flares from 13 active stars (eight RS CVn systems, one Algol system, three dMe stars and one YSO) were detected during the first two years of our all-sky X-ray monitoring with the gas propotional counters (GSC) of the Monitor of All-sky X-ray Image (MAXI). The observed parameters of all of these MAXI/GSC flares are found to be at the upper ends for stellar flares with the luminosity of 10^(31-34) ergs s-1 in the 2-20 keV band, the emission measure of 10^(54-57) cm-3, the e-folding time of 1 hour to 1.5 days, and the total radiative energy released during the flare of 10^(34-39) ergs. …
We present the third MAXI/GSC catalog in the high Galactic-latitude sky ($|b| > 10^\circ$) based on the 7-year data from 2009 August 13 to 2016 July 31, complementary to that in the low Galactic-latitude sky ($|b| < 10^\circ$; Hori et al. 2018). We compile 682 sources detected at significances of $s_{\rm D,4-10~keV} \geq 6.5$ in the 4--10 keV band. A two-dimensional image fit based on the Poisson likelihood algorithm ($C$-statistics) is adopted for the detections and constraints on their fluxes and positions. The 4--10 keV sensitivity reaches $\approx 0.48$ mCrab, or $\approx 5.9 \times 10^{-1…
We studied the properties of the low-frequency quasi-periodic oscillations detected in a sample of six black hole candidates (XTE J1550-564, H 1743-322, XTE J1859+226, 4U 1630-47,GX 339-4, XTE J1650-500) observed by the Rossi XTE satellite. We analyzed the relation between the full width half maximum and the frequency of all the narrow peaks detected in power density spectra where a type-C QPO is observed. Our goal was to understand the nature of the modulation of the signal by comparing the properties of different harmonic peaks in the power density spectrum. We find that for the sources in o…
At high luminosities black hole binaries show spectra with a strong disc component accompanied by an equally strong tail where at least some of the electrons are non-thermal. We reanalyze the simultaneous ASCA-RXTE-OSSE data from the 1998 outburst of XTE J1550-564, which span 0.7-1000 keV and remain the best data available of a black hole binary in this state. We reassess the importance of electron-positron pair production using a realistically high value of the source compactness for the first time. The lack of an observable annihilation line together with the observed gamma-ray flux beyond 5…
We report on the detection and subsequent X-ray monitoring of the new Galactic black hole candidate MAXI J1535-571 with the MAXI/GSC. Afterthe discovery on 2017 September 2 made independently with MAXI and the Swift/BAT, the source brightened gradually, and in a few weeks, reached the peak intensity of ~5 Crab, or ~1.6 x 10^{-7} erg cm^{-2} s^{-1} in terms of the 2--20 keV flux. On the initial outburst rise, the X-ray spectrum was described by a power-law model with a photon index of ~2, while after a hard-to-soft transition which occurred on September 18, the spectrum required a disk blackbod…
Galactic short orbital period black hole candidate (BHC) XTE~J1752-223 was discovered on 2009 Oct 21 by the Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer (RXTE). We study the spectral properties of this outburst using transonic flow solution based two component advective flow (TCAF) model. TCAF model fitted spectrum gives an estimation of the physical flow parameters, such as the Keplerian disk rate, sub-Keplerian halo rate, properties of the so-called {\it{Compton cloud}}, other than the mass of the source and normalization ($N$). $N$ is a standardized ratio of emitted to observed photon flux in TCAF which doe…
We present the earliest X-ray observations of the 2018 outburst of XTE J1810-197, the first outburst since its 2003 discovery as the prototypical transient and radio-emitting anomalous X-ray pulsar (AXP). The Monitor of All-sky X-ray Image (MAXI) detected XTE J1810-197 immediately after a November 20-26 visibility gap, contemporaneous with its reactivation as a radio pulsar, first observed on December 8. On December 13 the Nuclear Spectroscopic Telescope Array (NUSTAR) detected X-ray emission up to at least 30 keV, with a spectrum well-characterized by a blackbody plus power-law model with tem…
We present spectral and timing properties of the newly discovered X-ray transient source, MAXI J1535-571, which is believed to be a Galactic X-ray binary containing a black hole candidate (BHC) as the primary object. After its discovery on 2017 Sep. 2, it has been monitored regularly in multi-wavelength bands by several satellites. We use archival data of Swift (XRT and BAT) and MAXI (GSC) satellite instruments to study accretion flow dynamics of the source during the outburst. During its outburst, the source became very bright in the sky with a maximum observed flux of $5$~Crab in the $2-10$~…
MAXI/GSC detected a superburst from EXO 1745-248 in the globular cluster Terzan 5 on 2011 October 24. The GSC light curve shows an exponential decay with an e-folding time of 0.3 day. The spectra are consistent with the blackbody radiation, whose temperature is 2.2 keV and 1.2 keV at MJD 55858.56 and 55859.20, respectively. The fluence is $1.4 \times 10^{42}$ erg in 2-20 keV assuming 8.7 kpc distance. The sphere radius of the blackbody and its luminosity are estimated to be 6.2 km and $1.1 \times 10^{38}$ erg s$^{-1}$, respectively, from the spectral fitting at the flux peak. Those e-folding t…
Galactic black hole candidate MAXI J1910-057/Swift J1910.2-0546 was simultaneously discovered by MAXI/GSC and Swift/BAT satellites during its first outburst in 2012. We study the detailed spectral and temporal properties of the source in a broad energy range using archival data from Swift/XRT, MAXI/GSC and Swift/BAT satellites/instruments. Low frequency quasi periodic oscillations are observed during the outburst. The combined 1-50 keV spectra are analyzed using the transonic flow solution based Two Component Advective Flow (TCAF) model. Based on the variations of soft and hard X-ray fluxes, t…
We report on the detection and follow-up multi-wavelength observations of the new X-ray transient MAXI J1807+132 with the MAXI/GSC, Swift, and ground-based optical telescopes. The source was first recognized with the MAXI/GSC on 2017 March 13. About a week later, it reached the maximum intensity ($\sim$10 mCrab in 2-10 keV), and then gradually faded in $\sim$10 days by more than one order of magnitude. Time-averaged Swift/XRT spectra in the decaying phase can be described by a blackbody with a relatively low temperature (0.1-0.5 keV), plus a hard power-law component with a photon index of $\si…
Timing properties of black hole X-ray binaries in outburst can be modeled with mass accretion rate fluctuations propagating towards the black hole. Such models predict time lags between energy bands due to propagation delays. First application of a propagating fluctuations model to black hole power spectra showed good agreement with the data. Indeed, hard lags observed from these systems appear to be in agreement with this generic prediction. Our PROPFLUC code allows to simultaneously predict power spectra, time lags, and coherence of the variability as a function of energy. This was successfu…
The black hole candidate, XTE J1752-223, was discovered in 2009 October when it entered an outburst. We obtained radio data from the Australia Telescope Compact Array for the duration of the ~9 month event. The lightcurves show that the radio emission from the compact jet persisted for the duration of an extended hard state and through the transition to the intermediate state. The flux then rose rapidly by a factor of 10 and the radio source entered a series of at least 7 maxima, the first of which was likely to be emission associated with the compact jet. The subsequent 6 flares were accompan…
The Galactic Black hole candidate XTE J1752-223 was observed during the decay of its 2009 outburst with the Suzaku and XMM-Newton observatories. The observed spectra are consistent with the source being in the ''intermediate`` and ''low-hard state`` respectively. The presence of a strong, relativistic iron emission line is clearly detected in both observations and the line profiles are found to be remarkably consistent and robust to a variety of continuum models. This strongly points to the compact object in \j\ being a stellar-mass black hole accretor and not a neutron star. Physically-motiva…
XTE J1818-245 is an X-ray nova that experienced an outburst in 2005, first seen by the RXTE satellite. The source was observed simultaneously at various wavelengths up to soft gamma-rays with the INTEGRAL satellite, from 2005 February to September. X-ray novae are extreme systems that often harbor a black hole, and are known to emit throughout the electromagnetic spectrum when in outburst. We analyzed radio, (N)IR, optical, X-ray and soft gamma-ray observations and constructed simultaneous broad-band X-ray spectra. Analyzing both the light curves in various energy ranges and the hardness-inten…
The accreting black-hole binary XTE J1752--223 was observed in a stable hard state for 25 d by RXTE, yielding a 3--140 keV spectrum of unprecedented statistical quality. Its published model required a single Comptonization spectrum reflecting from a disk close to the innermost stable circular orbit. We studied that model as well as a number of other single-Comptonization models (yielding similarly low inner radii), but found they violate a number of basic physical constraints, e.g., their compactness is much above the maximum allowed by pair equilibrium. We also studied the contemporaneous 0.5…
MAXI J1803-298, a newly-discovered Galactic transient and black hole candidate, was first detected by \emph{MAXI}/GSC on May 1st, 2021. In this paper, we present a detailed spectral analysis of MAXI J1803-298. Utilizing the X-ray reflection fitting method, we perform a joint fit to the spectra of MAXI J1803-298, respectively, observed by \emph{NuSTAR} and \emph{NICER}/XTI on the same day over the energy range between 0.7-79.0 keV, and found its spin (and the inclination angle i) can be constrained to be close to an extreme value, 0.991 ($i\sim$ $70 ^{\circ}$), at 68\% confidence interval. The …
We present the results of analysis of the X-ray transient source MAXI J1836-194 during its outburst in August 2011. MAXI GSC detected the source on 30th August 2011, when it started rising from the quiescence. We have studied the source using the observations of RXTE. In this paper, we study the temporal and spectral evolution of the source during the outburst. Spectral analysis shows that the source exhibits state transition to Hard Intermediate state(HIMS) and decays back to a Low/Hard state. The temporal analysis indicates the presence of QPOs during the hard intermediate state. We also obs…
We report on a long-term monitoring of a newly discovered X-ray nova, MAXI J1910-057 (= Swift J1910.2-0546), by MAXI and Swift. The new X-ray transient was first detected on 2012 May 31 by MAXI Gas Slit Camera (GSC) and Swift Burst Alert Telescope (BAT) almost simultaneously. We analyzed X-ray and UV data for 270 days since the outburst onset taken by repeated MAXI scans and Swift pointing observations. The obtained X-ray light curve for the inital 90 days is roughly represented by a fast-rise and exponential-decay profile. However, it re-brightened on the ~110 days after the onset and finally…
The error region of the the gravitational-wave (GW) event GW151226 was observed with Monitor of All-sky X-ray Image (MAXI). MAXI was operated at the time of GW151226, and continuously observed to 4 minutes after the event. MAXI covered about 84% of the 90 percent error region of the GW event during the first 92 minutes orbit after the event. No significant X-ray transient was detected in the GW error region. A typical 3-$σ$ GSC upper limit for a scan is 1.2 $\times 10^{-9}$ ergs cm$^{-2}$ s$^{-1}$ in the 2-20 keV. The auto-detection (MAXI nova-search) systems detected a short excess event with…
Using unbiased observations of MAXI/GSC the potential contribution of stellar flares and CVs to GRXE luminosity is estimated in the energy range of 2 - 10 keV. Currently, a reasonable luminosity has been obtained extrapolating the number of stellar flares and that of CVs toward the Galactic ridge from those of the observed flares and CVs near the solar system. The ionized emission lines of Si to Fe are also simulated making the composite thermal spectrum which is based on MAXI observations of stellar flares and CVs. The present estimated result strongly supports a picture that the cumulative s…
We investigate the quality factor and RMS amplitude of the lower kHz QPOs from XTE J1701-462, a unique X-ray source which was observed in both the so-called Z and atoll states. Correcting for the frequency drift of the QPO, we show that, as in all sources for which such a correction can be applied, the quality factor and RMS amplitude drops sharply above above a critical frequency. For XTE J1701-462 this frequency is estimated to be ~800 Hz, where the quality factor reaches a maximum of ~200 (e.g. a value consistent with the one observed from more classical systems, such as 4U~1636-536). Such …
Quasi-periodic oscillations (QPOs) with frequencies from $\sim0.05$-$30$ Hz are a common feature in the X-ray emission of accreting black hole binaries. As the QPOs originate from the innermost accretion flow, they provide the opportunity to probe the behaviour of matter in extreme gravity. In this paper, we present a systematic analysis of the inclination dependence of phase lags associated with both Type-B and Type-C QPOs in a sample of 15 Galactic black hole binaries. We find that the phase lag at the Type-C QPO frequency strongly depends on inclination, both in evolution with QPO frequency…
We construct a new X-ray (2--10 keV) luminosity function of Compton-thin active galactic nuclei (AGNs) in the local universe, using the first MAXI/GSC source catalog surveyed in the 4--10 keV band. The sample consists of 37 non-blazar AGNs at $z=0.002-0.2$, whose identification is highly ($>97%$) complete. We confirm the trend that the fraction of absorbed AGNs with $N_{\rm H} > 10^{22}$ cm$^{-2}$ rapidly decreases against luminosity ($L_{\rm X}$), from 0.73$\pm$0.25 at $L_{\rm X} = 10^{42-43.5}$ erg s$^{-1}$ to 0.12$\pm0.09$ at $L_{\rm X} = 10^{43.5-45.5}$ erg s$^{-1}$. The obtained luminosit…
