A highlighting feature of Majorana bound states in two-dimensional topological superconductors is that they gain a phase factor of $π$ upon being orbited by a vortex. This work focuses on the vortex degree of freedom itself and demonstrates that the change in the Majorana state is accompanied by a fermion parity change within the vortex. Such a parity flip is interpreted as a higher dimensional analog of the fermion parity pump mechanism in superconducting wires as well as through general topological arguments. It is demonstrated in terms of level crossings in three different situations - in i) spin-triplet paired superconductors, and in proximity-induced superconducting systems involving ii) quantum spin Hall-ferromagnet hybrids and iii) Chern insulators.
We show that the presence of Majorana zero modes (2D), and chiral-dispersing Majorana modes (3D), in the vortex cores of superconductors are neither sufficient nor necessary conditions for one to conclude the superconductivity is topologically non-trivial. We discuss the relevance of this result to the proximity-induced superconductivity, in the presence of magnetic field, on the surface of topological insulators.
We show that non-Abelian vortices can exist in magnetic materials. These are singularity-free textures, are described by spin-lattice and field theory models, and we demonstrate that typical magnetic materials can be quite suitable for their realization and observation. We give a topological classification of these vortices and reveal their connection with Abelian topological structures, such as usual vortices, merons and skyrmions. We also describe how non-Abelian magnetic vortices can carry topologically protected information and present reasons for the advantage of such information carriers…
It has been widely believed that half quantum vortices are indispensable to realize topological stable Majorana zero modes and non-Abelian anyons in spinful superconductors/superfluids. Contrary to this wisdom, we here demonstrate that integer quantum vortices in spinful superconductors can host topologically stable Majorana zero modes because of the mirror symmetry. The symmetry protected Majorana fermions may exhibit non-Abelian anyon braiding.
We study the zero-temperature phase diagram and fractional excitation when a thin film of 3D topological insulator has two competing masses: T- symmetric exciton condensation and T- breaking Zeeman effect. Two topologically distinct phases are identified: in one, the quasiparticles can be viewed as in a quantum spin Hall phase, and in the other a quantum anomalous Hall phase. The vortices of the exciton order parameter can carry fractional charge and statistics of electrons in both phases. When the system undergoes the quantum phase transition between these two phases, the charges, statistics …
In this paper we consider a layered heterostructure of an Abelian topologically ordered state (TO), such as a fractional Chern insulator/quantum Hall state with an s-wave superconductor in order to explore the existence of non-Abelian defects. In order to uncover such defects we must augment the original TO by a $\mathbb{Z}_2$ gauge theory sector coming from the s-wave SC. We first determine the extended TO for a wide variety of fractional quantum Hall or fractional Chern insulator heterostructures. We prove the existence of a general anyon permutation symmetry (AS) that exists in any fermioni…
We use a nonperturbative extended contractor renormalization (ENCORE) method for engineering quantum devices for the implementation of topologically protected quantum bits described by an effective quantum dimer model on the triangular lattice. By tuning the couplings of the device, topological protection might be achieved if the ratio between effective two-dimer interactions and flip amplitudes lies in the liquid phase of the phase diagram of the quantum dimer model. For a proposal based on a quantum Josephson junction array [L. B. Ioffe {\it et al.}, Nature (London) {\bf 415}, 503 (2002)] ou…
We propose a mechanism for opening a full bulk energy gap and inducing vortex Majorana zero modes (MZMs) in nodal superconductors (SCs). We show that this becomes possible by coupling the nodal SC of interest to a magnetic texture crystal. The latter consists of superpositions of magnetic textures which repeat periodically in space according to suitable wave vectors that enable spin-flip scattering between all pairs of nodes of the SC, and thus open a full gap in its bulk energy spectrum. In this event, MZMs can be trapped in spin or shift vortices introduced in the magnetic texture crystal. O…
Topologically stable structures include vortices in a wide variety of matter, such as skyrmions in ferro- and antiferromagnets, and hedgehog point defects in liquid crystals and ferromagnets. These are characterized by integer-valued topological quantum numbers. In this context, closed surfaces are a prominent subject of study as they form a link between fundamental mathematical theorems and real physical systems. Here we perform an analysis on the topology and stability of equilibrium magnetization states for a thin spherical shell with easy-axis anisotropy in normal directions. Skyrmion solu…
The imminent realization of topologically-protected qubits in fabricated systems will provide not only an elementary implementation of fault-tolerant quantum computing architecture, but also an experimental vehicle for the general study of topological order. The simplest topological qubit harbors what is known as a Z$_2$ liquid phase, which encodes information via a degeneracy depending on the system's topology. Elementary excitations of the phase are fractionally charged objects called {\it spinons}, or Ising flux vortices called {\it visons}. At zero temperature a Z$_2$ liquid is stable unde…
The Kitaev model realizes a quantum spin liquid where the spin excitations are fractionalized into itinerant Majorana fermions and localized $\mathbb{Z}_2$ vortices. Quantum entanglement between the fractional excitations can be utilized for decoherence-free topological quantum computation. Of particular interest is the anyonic statistics realized by braiding the vortex excitations under a magnetic field. Despite the promising potential, the practical methodology for creation and control of the vortex excitations remains elusive thus far. Here we theoretically propose how one can create and mo…
We show that an array of Josephson coupled Cooper paired planes can never have long range phase coherence at any finite temperature due to an infrared divergence of phase fluctuations. The phase correlations decay in a slow enough manner providing enough local phase coherence as to make possible the nucleation of vortices. The planes then acquire Kosterlitz-Thouless topological order with its intrinsic rigidity and concomitant superfluidity. We thus conclude that the high temperature superconducting cuprates are topologically ordered superconductors rather than phase ordered superconductors. F…
Fermi liquid theory provides a remarkably powerful framework for the description of the conduction electrons in metals and their ordering phenomena, such as superconductivity, ferromagnetism, and spin- and charge-density-wave order. A different class of ordering phenomena of great interest concerns spin configurations that are topologically protected, that is, their topology can be destroyed only by forcing the average magnetization locally to zero. Examples of such configurations are hedgehogs (points at which all spins are either pointing inwards or outwards) or vortices. A central question …
Vortices of several condensed matter systems are predicted to have zero-energy core excitations which are Majorana fermions. These exotic quasi-particles are neutral, massless, and expected to have non-Abelian statistics. Furthermore, they make the ground state of the system highly degenerate. For a large density of vortices, an Abrikosov lattice is formed, and tunneling of Majorana fermions between vortices removes the energy degeneracy. In particular the spectrum of Majorana fermions in a triangular lattice is gapped, and the Hamiltonian which describes such a system is antisymmetric under t…
Recent experiments have observed bulk superconductivity in doped topological insulators. Here we ask whether vortex Majorana zero modes, previously predicted to occur when superconductivity is induced on the surface of topological insulators, survive even in these doped systems with metallic normal states. Assuming inversion symmetry, we find that Majorana zero modes indeed appear but only below a critical doping. The critical doping is associated with a topological phase transition of the vortex line, where it supports gapless excitations along its length. The critical point depends only on t…
A one-dimensional time-reversal-invariant topological superconductor hosts a Majorana Kramers pair at each end, where time-reversal symmetry acts as a supersymmetry that flips local fermion parity. We examine the transport anomaly of such a superconductor, floating and tunnel-coupled to normal leads at its two ends. We demonstrate the realization of a topologically-protected, channel-symmetric, two-channel Kondo effect without fine-tuning. Whereas the nonlocal teleportation vanishes, a lead present at one end telecontrols the universal transport through the other end.
In this work we identify a previously unexplored type of topological defect in spiral spin liquids -- the momentum vortex -- and reveal its dominant role in shaping the low energy physics of such systems. Spiral spin liquids are a class of classical spin liquids featuring sub-extensively degenerate ground states. They are distinct from spin liquids on geometrically frustrated lattices, in which the ground state degeneracy is extensive and connected by local spin flips. Despite a handful of experimental realizations and many theoretical studies, a concrete physical picture of their spin liquidi…
We discuss the dispersionless spectrum with zero energy in the linear topological defects - vortices. The flat band emerges inside the vortex living in the bulk medium containing topologically stable Fermi points in momentum space. The boundaries of the flat band in the vortex are determined by projections of the Fermi points in bulk to the vortex axis. This bulk-vortex correspondence for flat band is similar to the bulk-surface correspondence discussed earlier in the media with topologically protected lines of zeroes. In the latter case the flat band emerges on the surface of the system, and …
The non-trivial topology in the layered $\text{FeTe}_{0.55}\text{Se}_{0.45}$ (FTS) superconductor has been suggested by both theory and experiment to be strongly dependent on the Te concentration. Motivated by this together with the Te fluctuations expected from alloy disorder, we develop a simple layered model for a strong topological insulator that allows us to describe a scenario where topologically trivial domains permeate the sample. We refer to such a phase as topological domain disordered and study the local density (LDOS) of the topological surface states that can be measured using sca…
Most common types of symmetry breaking in quasi-one-dimensional electronic systems possess a combined manifold of states degenerate with respect to both the phase $θ$ and the amplitude $A$ sign of the order parameter $A\exp(iθ)$. These degrees of freedom can be controlled or accessed independently via either the spin polarization or the charge densities. To understand statistical properties and the phase diagram in the course of cooling under the controlled parameters, we present here an analytical treatment supported by Monte Carlo simulations for a generic coarse-grained two-fields model of …
