We study the zero-temperature phase diagram and fractional excitation when a thin film of 3D topological insulator has two competing masses: T- symmetric exciton condensation and T- breaking Zeeman effect. Two topologically distinct phases are identified: in one, the quasiparticles can be viewed as in a quantum spin Hall phase, and in the other a quantum anomalous Hall phase. The vortices of the exciton order parameter can carry fractional charge and statistics of electrons in both phases. When the system undergoes the quantum phase transition between these two phases, the charges, statistics and the number of fermionic zero mode of the excitonic vortices are also changed. We derive the effective field theory for vortices and external gauge field by directly integrating out fermions and present an explicit wave function for the fermionic zero mode localized at the excitonic vortices with or without orbital magnetic field. The quantum phase transition can be measured by optical Faraday or Kerr effect experiments, and in closing we discuss the conditions required to create the excitonic condensate.
Excitonic insulators conduct neither electrons nor holes but bound electron-hole pairs, excitons. Unfortunately, it is not possible to inject and detect the electron and hole currents independently within a single semiconducting layer. However, interlayer excitonic insulators provide a spatial separation of electrons and holes enabling exciton current measurements. The problem is that the spatial separation weakens electron-hole pairing and may lead to interlayer exciton disassociation. Here we develop an explicitly solvable model to determine an interlayer separation that is strong enough to …
We introduce the topological mirror excitonic insulator as a new type of interacting topological crystalline phase in one dimension. Its mirror-symmetry-protected topological properties are driven by exciton physics, and it manifests in the quantized bulk polarization and half-charge modes on the boundary. And the bosonization analysis is performed to demonstrate its robustness against strong correlation effects in one dimension. Besides, we also show that Rashba nanowires and Dirac semimetal nanowires could provide ideal experimental platforms to realize this new topological mirror excitonic …
We show that in excitonic insulators with $s$-wave electron-hole pairing, an applied electric field (either pulsed or static) can induce a $p$-wave component to the order parameter, and further drive it to rotate in the $s+ip$ plane, realizing a Thouless charge pump. In one dimension, each cycle of rotation pumps exactly two electrons across the sample. Higher dimensional systems can be viewed as a stack of one dimensional chains in momentum space in which each chain crossing the fermi surface contributes a channel of charge pumping. Physics beyond the adiabatic limit, including in particular …
Tuning many-body electronic phases by an external handle is of both fundamental and practical importance in condensed matter science. The tunability mirrors the underlying interactions, and gigantic electric, optical and magnetic responses to minute external stimuli can be anticipated in the critical region of phase change. The excitonic insulator is one of the exotic phases of interacting electrons, produced by the Coulomb attraction between a small and equal number of electrons and holes, leading to the spontaneous formation of exciton pairs in narrow-gap semiconductors/semimetals. The layer…
Bardasis-Schrieffer modes in superconductors are fluctuations in subdominant pairing channels, e.g., d-wave fluctuations in an s-wave superconductor. This Rapid Communication shows that these modes also generically occur in excitonic insulators. In s-wave excitonic insulators, a p-wave Bardasis-Schrieffer mode exists below the gap energy, is optically active and hybridizes strongly with photons to form Bardasis-Schrieffer polaritons, which are observable in both far-field and near-field optical experiments.
Excitonic insulators host a condensate of electron-hole pairs at equilibrium, giving rise to collective many-body effects. Although several materials have emerged as excitonic insulator candidates, evidence of long-range coherence is lacking and the origin of the ordered phase in these systems remains controversial. Here, using ultrafast pump-probe microscopy, we investigate the possible excitonic insulator Ta$_2$NiSe$_5$. Below 328 K, we observe the anomalous micrometer-scale propagation of coherent modes at velocities of the order of $\sim10^5$ m/s, which we attribute to the hybridization be…
The excitonic insulator is an elusive electronic phase exhibiting a correlated excitonic ground state. Materials with such a phase are expected to have intriguing properties such as excitonic high-temperature superconductivity. However, compelling evidence on the experimental realization is still missing. Here, we theoretically propose hybrids of two-dimensional semiconductors functionalized by organic molecules as prototypes of excitonic insulators, with the exemplary candidate WS$_2$-F6TCNNQ. This material system exhibits an excitonic insulating phase at room temperature with a ground state …
Excitonic insulators are insulating states formed by the coherent condensation of electron and hole pairs into BCS-like states. Isotropic spatial wave functions are commonly considered for excitonic condensates since the attractive interaction among the electrons and the holes in semiconductors usually leads to $s$-wave excitons. Here, we propose a new type of excitonic insulator that exhibits order parameter with $p+ip$ symmetry and is characterized by a chiral Chern number $C_\textrm{c}=1/2$. This state displays the parity anomaly, which results in two novel topological properties: fractiona…
Recently, quantum oscillation of the resistance in insulating monolayer WTe$_2$ was reported. An explanation in terms of gap modulation in the hybridized Landau levels of an excitonic insulator was also proposed by one of us. However, the previous picture of gap modulation in the Landau levels spectrum was built on a pair of well nested electron and hole Fermi surfaces, while the monolayer WTe$_2$ has one hole and two electron Fermi pockets with relative anisotropy. Here we demonstrate that for system like monolayer WTe$_2$, the excitonic insulating state arising from the coupled one hole and …
The layered chalcogenide Ta$_{2}$NiSe$_{5}$ has been proposed to host an excitonic condensate in its ground state, a phase that could offer a unique platform to study and manipulate many-body states at room temperature. However, identifying the dominant microscopic contribution to the observed spontaneous symmetry breaking remains challenging, perpetuating the debate over the ground state properties. Here, using broadband ultrafast spectroscopy we investigate the out-of-equilibrium dynamics of Ta$_{2}$NiSe$_{5}$ and demonstrate that the transient reflectivity in the near-infrared range is conn…
Excitonic insulator is a coherent electronic phase that results from the formation of a macroscopic population of bound particle-hole pairs - excitons. With only a few candidate materials known, the collective excitonic behavior is challenging to observe, being obscured by crystalline lattice effects. Here we use polarization-resolved Raman spectroscopy to reveal the quadrupolar excitonic mode in the candidate zero-gap semiconductor Ta$_2$NiSe$_5$ disentangling it from the lattice phonons. The excitonic mode pronouncedly softens close to the phase transition, showing its electronic character, …
We study the thermal conductivity in the excitonic insulator using a simple quasi one-dimensional two-band model consisting of electron and hole bands with the Coulomb interactions between these bands. Based on the linear response theory within a mean-field scheme, we develop a method to identify the contributions to thermal conductivity driven by excitonic insulator. It is found that there is an additional heat current operator owing to the excitonic phase transition, and that it gives contributions to thermal conductivity which are not expressed in the form of Sommerfeld-Bethe relations writ…
A recent paper on the insulating state of monolayer WTe2 reported the observation of large oscillations in the conductivity that are periodic in 1/B, resembling quantum oscillations in metals. This remarkable observation has inspired suggestions of exotic physics such as spin-charge separation. We show that a rather more conventional but still nontrivial explanation in terms of gap modulation may be possible in a model of excitonic insulator subject to a magnetic field.
To study excitonic effects on high-harmonic generation (HHG) in Mott insulators, we investigate pumped nonequilibrium dynamics in the one-dimensional extended Hubbard model. By employing time-dependent calculations based on the exact diagonalization and infinite time-evolving block decimation methods, we find the strong enhancement of the HHG intensity around the exciton energy. The subcycle analysis in the sub-Mott-gap regime shows that the intensity region of the time-resolved spectrum around the exciton energy splits into two levels and oscillates following the driving electric field. This …
We study the photo-induced dynamics of the excitonic insulator in the two-band Hubbard model on the Penrose tiling by means of the time-dependent real-space mean-field approximation. We show that, with a single-cycle electric-field pulse, the bulk (spatially averaged) excitonic order parameter decreases in the BCS regime, while it increases in the BEC regime. To clarify the dynamics peculiar to the Penrose tiling, we examine the coordination number dependence of observables and analyze the perpendicular space. In the BEC regime, characteristic oscillations of the electron number at each site a…
In this paper, first, we present a general formulation to investigate the ground-state and elementary excitations of an excitonic insulator (EI) in real materials. In addition, we discuss the out-of-equilibrium state induced (albeit transiently) by high-intensity light illumination of a conventional two-dimensional (2D) insulator. We then, present various band-structure models which allow us to study the transition from a conventional insulator to an EI in 2D materials as a function of the dielectric constant, the conventional insulator gap (and chemical potential), the bandwidths of the condu…
In this work we perform a detailed first-principles analysis of the electronic and optical properties of NiBr$_2$ within the state-of-the-art $GW$+BSE scheme to determine whether this system displays negative excitonic energies, which would identify it as an (half) excitonic insulator. Particular attention is payed to the convergence of the $GW$ band structure and to the consistency between approximations employed in the ground-state calculations and approximations employed in the linear response calculations. We show that these two issues play a crucial role in identifying the excitonic natur…
While various excitonic insulators have been studied in the literature, due to the perceived too-small spin splitting, spin-triplet excitonic insulator is rare. In two-dimensional systems such as a graphone, however, it is possible, as revealed by first-principles calculations coupled with Bethe-Salpeter equation. The critical temperature, given by an effective Hamiltonian, is 11.5 K. While detecting excitonic insulators is still a daunting challenge, the condensation of triplet excitons will result in spin superfluidity, which can be directly measured by a transport experiment. Nonlocal diele…
We employ mean-field approximation to investigate the interplay between the nontrivial band topology and the formation of excitonic insulator (EI) in a one-dimensional chain of atomic $s-p$ orbitals in the presence of repulsive inter-orbital Coulomb interaction. We find that our model, in a non-interacting regime, admits topological and trivial insulator phases, whereas, in strong Coulomb interaction limit, the chiral symmetry is broken and the system undergoes a topological-excitonic insulator phase transition. The latter phase transition stems from an orbital pseudomagnetization and band inv…
We performed ultrasonic measurements on (Ta$_{0.952}$V$_{0.048}$)$_2$NiSe$_5$ to investigate the contribution of acoustic phonons at the zone center to structural and possible excitonic transitions. The transverse elastic constant $C_{55}$ with irreducible representation $B_\mathrm{2g}$ exhibits softening over 90\% above a transition temperature of $T_\mathrm{s} = 280$ K, indicating the soft mode of corresponding TA phonons. Our analysis based on the quadrupole response indicates that the electron-phonon interaction contributes to the excitonic transition in addition to the hybridization betwe…
Excitonic insulator (EI) was proposed in 60's as a distinct insulating state originating from pure electronic interaction, but its material realization has been elusive with extremely few material candidates and with only limited evidence such as anomalies in transport properties, band dispersions, or optical transitions. We investigate the real-space electronic states of the low temperature phase in Ta$_2$NiSe$_5$ with an atomic resolution to clearly identify the quasiparticle energy gap together with the strong electron-hole band renormalization using scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) and …
We point out the universal presence of the excitonic superexchange in spin-orbit-coupled Mott insulators. It is observed that, the restriction to the lowest spin-orbit-entangled "$J$" states may sometimes be insufficient to characterize the microscopic physics, and the virtual excitonic processes via the upper "$J$" states provide an important correction to the superexchange. We illustrate this excitonic superexchange from a two-dimensional $5d$ iridate Sr$_2$IrO$_4$ and explain its physical consequences such as the orbital-like coupling to the external magnetic flux and the nonlinear magnetic…
We study the nonequilibrium dynamics in the pump-probe spectroscopy of excitonic insulators using the spinless two-orbital model with phonon degrees of freedom in the time-dependent mean-field approximation. We introduce the pulse light as a time-dependent vector potential via the Peierls phase in the Hamiltonian. We find that, in the Bose-Einstein condensation regime where the normal state is semiconducting, the excitonic order is suppressed when the frequency of the pulse light is slightly larger than the band gap, while the order is enhanced when the frequency of the pulse is much larger th…
The interplay between topology and correlations can generate a variety of quantum phases, many of which remain to be explored. Recent advances have identified monolayer WTe2 as a promising material for doing so in a highly tunable fashion. The ground state of this two-dimensional (2D) crystal can be electrostatically tuned from a quantum spin Hall insulator (QSHI) to a superconductor. However, much remains unknown about the gap-opening mechanism of the insulating state. Here we report evidence that the QSHI is also an excitonic insulator (EI), arising from the spontaneous formation of electron…
