We consider the interaction of a ferromagnetic spinor Bose-Einstein condensate with a magnetic field gradient. The magnetic field gradient realizes a spin-position coupling that explicitly breaks time-reversal symmetry T and space parity P, but preserves the combined PT symmetry. We observe using numerical simulations, a first-order phase transition spontaneously breaking this re-maining symmetry. The transition to a low-gradient phase, in which gradient effects are frozen out by the ferromagnetic interaction, suggests the possibility of high-coherence magnetic sensors unaffected by gradient dephasing.
According to the famous Kibble-Zurek mechanism (KZM), the universality of spontaneous defect generation in continuous phase transitions (CPTs) can be understood by the critical slowing down. In most CPTs of atomic Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs), the universality of spontaneous defect generations has been explained by the divergent relaxation time associated with the nontrivial gapless Bogoliubov excitations. However, for atomic BECs in synthetic gauge fields, their spontaneous superfluidity breakdown is resulted from the divergent correlation length associated with the zero Landau critical v…
We study non-equilibrium polariton superfluids in the optical parametric oscillator (OPO) regime using a two-component Gross-Pitaevskii equation with pumping and decay. We identify a regime above OPO threshold, where the system undergoes spontaneous symmetry breaking and is unstable towards vortex formation without any driving rotation. Stable vortex solutions differ from metastable ones; the latter can persist in OPO superfluids but can only be triggered externally. Both spontaneous and triggered vortices are characterised by a generalised healing length, specified by the OPO parameters only.
We discuss an idea to realize a spontaneous current in a superfluid Fermi gas. When a polarized Fermi superfluid ($N_\up > N_\dwn$, where $N_σ$ is the number of atoms in the hyperfine state described by pseudospin $σ=\uparrow, \downarrow$.) is loaded onto a ring-shaped trap with a weak potential barrier, some of excess atoms ($ΔN=N_\uparrow-N_\downarrow$) are localized around the barrier. As shown in our previous paper [T. Kashimura, S. Tsuchiya, and Y. Ohashi, Phys. Rev. A \textbf{82}, 033617 (2010)], this polarized potential barrier works as a $π$-junction in the sense that the superfluid or…
In resonantly pumped polariton superfluids we recently explored a new regime based on the bistability of the polariton system to enhance the propagation of polariton fluids up to macroscopic distances. This technique together with an all-optical imprinting method allowed the generation and control of various topological excitations such as quantized vortices and dark solitons. The flexibility and scalability of the new experimental scheme opens the way to the systematic study of quantum turbulence in driven dissipative quantum fluids of light. In this article we review the basic working princi…
There exist inherent mechanisms of spontaneous breaking of local mirror symmetry (parity) in fluid turbulence. A good example is Kerr's mechanism based on the inviscid vortex interactions. Such interactions can result in the appearance of the local adjacent regions with strong oppositely signed helicity, while the global (net) helicity still remains zero due to the global mirror symmetry. It is shown, using results of direct numerical simulations and laboratory measurements, that the spontaneous breaking of local mirror symmetry can dominate turbulent dynamics in the superfluid helium II and i…
In zero magnetic field the ground state manifold of a ferromagnetic spin-1 condensate is SO(3) and exhibits $\mathbb{Z}_2$ vortices as topological defects. We investigate the phase ordering dynamics of this system after being quenched into this ferromagnetic phase from a zero temperature unmagnetized phase. Following the quench, we observe the ordering of both magnetic and gauge domains. We find that these domains grow diffusively, i.e. with domain size $L(t)\sim t^{1/2}$, and exhibit dynamic scale invariance. The coarsening dynamics progresses as $\mathbb{Z}_2$ vortices annihilate, however we…
The experimental investigation of spontaneously created vortices is of utmost importance for the understanding of quantum phase transitions towards a superfluid phase, especially for two dimensional systems that are expected to be governed by the Berezinski-Kosterlitz-Thouless physics. By means of time resolved near-field interferometry we track the path of such vortices, created at random locations in an exciton-polariton condensate under pulsed non-resonant excitation, to their final pinning positions imposed by the stationary disorder. We formulate a theoretical model that successfully repr…
Quantum degenerate cold-atom gases provide a remarkable opportunity to study strongly interacting systems. Recent experimental progress in producing ultracold polar molecules with a net electric dipole moment opens up new possibilities to realize novel quantum phases governed by the long-range and anisotropic dipole-dipole interactions. In this work we predict the existence of experimentally observable novel broken-symmetry states with spontaneous interlayer coherence in cold polar molecules. These exotic states appear due to strong repulsive interlayer interactions and exhibit properties of s…
A two-dimensional (2D) spin-1 Bose gas exhibits two Berezenskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless (BKT) transitions in the easy-plane ferromagnetic phase. The higher temperature transition is associated with superfluidity of the mass current determined predominantly by a single spin component. The lower temperature transition is associated with superfluidity of the axial spin current, quasi-long range order of the transverse spin density and binding of polar-core spin vortices (PCVs). Above the spin BKT temperature, the component circulations that make up each PCV spatially separate, suggesting possible dec…
The paper investigates the coexistence and interplay of spin and mass superfluidity in a ferromagnetic spin-1 Bose-Einstein condensate. Superfluidity is possible only in the presence of uniaxial anisotropy (linear and quadratic Zeeman effect). This follows from the topology of the order-parameter space (vacuum manifold). According to the Landau criterion, the critical phase gradients, both for mass and spin supercurrents, vanish at the phase transition from the easy-plane to the easy-axis anisotropy. However, mass superfluidity is still possible at the phase transition. This is because the Lan…
We report a stable magnetic domain wall in a uniform ferromagnetic spin-1 condensate, characterized by the magnetization having a dark soliton profile with nonvanishing superfluid density. We find exact stationary solutions for a particular ratio of interaction parameters with and without magnetic fields, and develop an accurate analytic solution applicable to the whole ferromagnetic phase. In the absence of magnetic fields, this domain wall relates various distinct solitary excitations in binary condensates through $\textrm{SO}(3)$ spin rotations, which otherwise are unconnected. Remarkably, …
We analyze theoretically the emergence of different superfluid phases of spin-1 bosons in a three-dimensional cubic optical lattice by generalizing the recently developed Ginzburg-Landau theory for the Bose-Hubbard model to a spinor Bose gas. In particular at zero temperature, our theory distinguishes within its validity range between various superfluid phases for an anti-ferromagnetic interaction with an external magnetic field. In addition, we determine that the superfluid-Mott insulator phase transition is of second order and that the transitions between the respective superfluid phases wit…
Recent experiments on ultracold atoms in optical lattices have synthesized a variety of tunable bands with degenerate double-well structures in momentum space. Such degeneracies in the single particle spectrum strongly enhance quantum fluctuations, and may lead to exotic many-body ground states. Here we consider weakly interacting spinor Bose gases in such bands, and discover a universal quantum "order by disorder" phenomenon which selects a novel chiral spin superfluid with remarkable properties such as spontaneous anomalous spin Hall effect and momentum space antiferromagnetism. For bosons i…
We study the quantum fluctuations in the condensates of a mixture of bosonic atoms and molecules with interspecies p-wave interaction. Our analysis shows that the quantum phase of coexisting atomic and molecular condensates is unstable at the mean-field level. Unlike the mixture of s-wave interaction, the Lee-Huang-Yang correction of p-wave interaction is unexpectedly found here to exhibit an opposite sign with respect to its mean-field term above a critical particle density. This quantum correction to the mean-field energy provides a remarkable mechanism to self-stabilize the phase. The order…
We analyze theoretically a spinor Bose gas loaded into a three-dimensional cubic optical lattice. In order to account for different superfluid phases of spin-1 bosons in the presence of an external magnetic field, we work out a Ginzburg-Landau theory for the underlying spin-1 Bose-Hubbard model. In particular at zero temperature, we determine both the Mott and the superfluid phases for the competition between the anti-ferromagnetic interaction and the linear Zeeman effect within the validity range of the Ginzburg-Landau theory. Moreover, we find that the phase transition between the superfluid…
We show the generation of two-dimensional quantum turbulence through simulations of a giant vortex decay in a trapped Bose-Einstein condensate. While evaluating the incompressible kinetic energy spectra of the quantum fluid described by the Gross-Pitaevskii equation, a bilinear form in a log-log plot is verified. A characteristic scaling behavior for small momenta shows resemblance to the Kolmogorov $k^{-5/3}$ law, while for large momenta it reassures the universal behavior of the core-size $k^{-3}$ power-law. This indicates a mechanism of energy transportation consistent with an inverse casca…
Atomtronics has the potential for engineering new types of functional devices, such as Josephson junctions (JJs). Previous studies have mainly focused on JJs whose ground states have 0 or $π$ superconducting phase difference across the junctions, while arbitrarily tunable phase JJs may have important applications in superconducting electronics and quantum computation. Here we show that a phase tunable JJ can be implemented in a spin-orbit coupled cold atomic gas with the magnetic tunneling barrier generated by a spin-dependent focused laser beam. We consider the JJ confined in either a linear …
In a two-dimensional (2D) turbulent fluid containing point-like vortices, Lars Onsager predicted that adding energy to the fluid can lead to the formation of persistent clusters of like-signed vortices, i.e., Onsager vortex (OV) clusters. In the evolution of 2D superfluid turbulence in a uniform disk-shaped Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC), it was discovered that a pair of OV clusters with opposite signs can form without any energy input. This striking spontaneous order was explained as due to a vortex evaporative-heating mechanism, i.e., annihilations of vortex-antivortex pairs which remove the…
Magnetic domain patterns in a ferromagnetic Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) show different properties depending on the quadratic Zeeman effect and dissipation. Another important factor that affects domain patterns and domain growth is superfluid flow of atoms. Domain growth in a ferromagnetic BEC with negative quadratic Zeeman energy is characterized by the same growth law as (classical) binary fluid in the inertial hydrodynamic regime. In the absence of the superfluid flow, the domain growth law for negative quadratic Zeeman energy is the same as that of scalar conserved fields such as binary …
Spinful superfluids of ultracold atoms are ideal for investigating the intrinsic properties of spin current and texture because they are realized in an isolated, nondissipative system free from impurities, dislocations, and thermal fluctuations. This study theoretically reveals the impact of spin current on a magnetic domain wall in spinful superfluids. An exact wall solution is obtained in the ferromagnetic phase of a spin-1 Bose--Einstein condensate with easy-axis anisotropy at zero temperature. The bosonic-quasiparticle mechanics analytically show that the spin current along the wall become…
We show that correlated pair tunneling drives a phase transition to a twisted superfluid with a complex order parameter. This unconventional superfluid phase spontaneously breaks the time-reversal symmetry and is characterized by a twisting of the complex phase angle between adjacent lattice sites. We discuss the entire phase diagram of the extended Bose--Hubbard model for a honeycomb optical lattice showing a multitude of quantum phases including twisted superfluids, pair superfluids, supersolids and twisted supersolids. Furthermore, we show that the nearest-neighbor interactions lead to a sp…
Coarsening dynamics, the canonical theory of phase ordering following a quench across a symmetry breaking phase transition, is thought to be driven by the annihilation of topological defects. Here we show that this understanding is incomplete. We simulate the dynamics of an isolated spin-1 condensate quenched into the easy-plane ferromagnetic phase and find that the mutual annihilation of spin vortices does not take the system to the equilibrium state. A nonequilibrium background of long wavelength spin waves remain at the Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless temperature, an order of magnitude hott…
Spin-superflow turbulence (SST) in spin-1 ferromagnetic spinor Bose-Einstein condensates is theoretically and numerically studied by using the spinor Gross-Pitaevskii (GP) equations. SST is turbulence in which the disturbed spin and superfluid velocity fields are coupled. Applying the Kolmogorov-type dimensional scaling analysis to the hydrodynamic equations of spin and velocity fields, we theoretically find that the -5/3 and -7/3 power laws appear in spectra of the superflow kinetic and the spin-dependent interaction energy, respectively. Our numerical calculation of the GP equations confirms…
Time crystals are a phase of matter, for which the discrete time symmetry of the driving Hamiltonian is spontaneously broken. The breaking of discrete time symmetry has been observed in several experiments in driven spin systems. Here, we show the observation of a space-time crystal using ultra-cold atoms, where the periodic structure in both space and time are directly visible in the experimental images. The underlying physics in our superfluid can be described ab initio and allows for a clear identification of the mechanism that causes the spontaneous symmetry breaking. Our results pave the …
Spontaneous pattern formation is a phenomenon ubiquitous in nature, examples ranging from Rayleigh-Benard convection to the emergence of complex organisms from a single cell. In physical systems, pattern formation is generally associated with the spontaneous breaking of translation symmetry and is closely related to other symmetry-breaking phenomena, of which (anti-)ferromagnetism is a prominent example. Indeed, magnetic pattern formation has been studied extensively in both solid-state materials and classical liquids. Here, we report on the spontaneous formation of wave-like magnetic patterns…
We study the spin dynamics in a spin-1 ferromagnetic Bose-Einstein condensate with magnetic dipole-dipole interaction (MDDI) based on the Gross-Pitaevskii and Bogoliubov theories. We find that various magnetic structures such as checkerboards and stripes emerge in the course of the dynamics due to the combined effects of spin-exchange interaction, MDDI, quadratic Zeeman and finite-size effects, and non-stationary initial conditions. However, the short-range magnetic order observed by the Berkeley group [Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 100}, 170403 (2008)] is not fully reproduced in our calculations; the…
Using the holographic model for spontaneous symmetry breaking, we study some properties of the dual superfluid such as the thermodynamic exponents, Joule-Thomson coefficient, compressibility etc. Our focus is on how these properties vary with the scaling dimension and the charge of the operator that undergoes condensation.
We study the physics of interacting spin-$1$ bosons in an optical lattice using a variational Gutzwiller technique. We compute the mean-field ground state wave-function and discuss the evolution of the condensate, spin, nematic, and singlet order parameters across the superfluid-Mott transition. We then extend the Gutzwiller method to derive the equations governing the dynamics of low energy excitations in the lattice. Linearizing these equations, we compute the excitation spectra in the superfluid and Mott phases for both ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic spin-spin interactions. In the supe…
We investigate the spin-polarized chain of ultracold fermionic atoms with spin-3/2 described by the fermionic Hubbard model with SU(4) symmetric attractive interaction. The competition of bound pairs, trions, quartets and unbound atoms is studied analytically and by density matrix renormalization group simulations. We find several distinct states where bound particles coexist with the ferromagnetic state of unpaired fermions. In particular, an exotic inhomogeneous Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov (FFLO)-type superfluid of quartets in a magnetic background of uncorrelated atoms is found for wea…
We study, using quantum Monte Carlo (QMC) simulations, the ground state properties of spin-1 bosons trapped in a square optical lattice. The phase diagram is characterized by the mobility of the particles (Mott insulating or superfluid phase) and by their magnetic properties. For ferromagnetic on-site interactions, the whole phase diagram is ferromagnetic and the Mott insulators-superfluid phase transitions are second order. For antiferromagnetic on-site interactions, spin nematic order is found in the odd Mott lobes and in the superfluid phase. Furthermore, the superfluid-insulator phase tran…
We demonstrate spontaneous spatial order in stripe and super-lattice solitons in a Rashba spin-orbit (SO) coupled spin-1 uniform quasi-two-dimensional (quasi-2D) ferromagnetic Bose-Einstein condensate. For weak SO coupling, the solitons are of the $(- 1,0,+ 1)$ or $(0,+ 1,+ 2)$ type with intrinsic vorticity, where the numbers in the parentheses denote angular momentum in spin components $F_z=+1,0,-1$, respectively. For intermediate SO coupling, three types of solitons are found: (a) circularly-asymmetric solitons, (b) circularly-symmetric $(- 1,0,+ 1)$- and (c) $(0,+ 1,+ 2)$-type multi-ring so…
Using the density matrix renormalization group method, we studied the ground state of the one-dimensional $S=1$ Bose-Hubbard model with local three-body interactions, which can be a superfluid or a Mott insulator state. We drew the phase diagram of this model for both ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic interaction. Regardless of the sign of the spin-dependent coupling, we obtained that the Mott lobes area decreases as the spin-dependent strength increases, which means that the even-odd asymmetry of the two-body antiferromagnetic chain is absent for local three-body interactions. For antiferro…
By studying the zero-temperature and nonzero-temperature phase diagrams of the ferromagnetic spin-1 Bose-Hubbard model under an external magnetic field, we find that the competition between ferromagnetism and the quadratic Zeeman energy yields two superfluid phases, which feature discontinuous first-order phase transitions between them for a strongly spinor Bose gas such as ${}^7$Li, contrary to the corresponding continuum system.
We study a two-dimensional bosonic Hubbard model with two hard-core species away from half filling using Quantum Monte Carlo simulations. The model includes a repulsive interspecies interaction and different nearest-neighbor hopping terms for the two species. By varying the filling we find a total of five distinct phases, including a normal liquid phase at higher temperature, and four different phases at lower temperature. We find an anti-ferromagnetically ordered Mott insulator and a region of coexistent anti-ferromagnetic and superfluid phases near half filling. Further away from half fillin…
We show that in the two-component Bose gas with Rashba spin-orbit coupling an arbitrarily small attractive interaction between bosons with opposite spin induces spontaneous ferromagnetism below a finite critical temperature $T_c$. In the ferromagnetic phase the single-particle spectrum exhibits a unique minimum in momentum space in the direction of the magnetization. For sufficiently small temperatures below $T_c$ the bosons eventually condense into the unique state at the bottom of the spectrum, forming a ferromagnetic Bose-Einstein condensate.

Quasicrystal is a class of ordered structures defying conventional classification of solid crystals and may carry classically forbidden (e.g., 5-fold) rotational symmetries. In view of long-sought supersolids, a natural question is whether a superfluid can spontaneously form quasicrystalline order that is not possessed by the underlying Hamiltonian, forming "superfluid-quasicrystals". Here we show that a superfluid-quasicrystal stripe state with the minimal 5-fold rotational symmetry can be realized as the ground state of a Bose-Einstein condensate within a practical experimental scheme. There…
In one-dimensional systems a twisted superfluid phase is found which is induced by a spontaneous breaking of the time-reversal symmetry. Using the density-matrix renormalization group allows us to show that the excitation energy gap closes exponentially causing a quasi-degenerate ground state. The two degenerate ground states are connected by the time-reversal symmetry which manifests itself in an alternating complex phase of the long-range correlation function. The quantum phase transition to the twisted superfluid is driven by pair tunneling processes in an extended Bose-Hubbard model. The p…
We study the concomitant breaking of spatial translations and dilatations in Ginzburg-Landau-like models, where the dynamics responsible for the symmetry breaking is described by an effective Mexican hat potential for spatial gradients. We show that there are fractonic modes with either subdimensional propagation or no propagation altogether, namely, immobility. Such class of effective field theories encompasses instances of helical superfluids and meta-fluids, where fractons can be connected to an emergent symmetry under higher moment charges, leading in turns to the trivialization of some el…
We systematically investigate the ground state phase diagram and the finite temperature phase transitions for a Rydberg-dressed Fermi gas loaded in a bilayer optical lattice. When an effective finite-ranged attraction is induced, our self-consistent mean-field calculation shows that the gapped topological ( $p$-wave) superfluids in each layer are coupled together by the $s$-wave pairing in an intermediate inter-layer distance with a spontaneously modulated phases between these two order parameters. The obtained ground state is a gapless topological superfluid with quantized topological charges…
