Background/foreground segmentation has a lot of applications in image and video processing. In this paper, a segmentation algorithm is proposed which is mainly designed for text and line extraction in screen content. The proposed method makes use of the fact that the background in each block is usually smoothly varying and can be modeled well by a linear combination of a few smoothly varying basis functions, while the foreground text and graphics create sharp discontinuity. The algorithm separates the background and foreground pixels by trying to fit pixel values in the block into a smooth function using a robust regression method. The inlier pixels that can fit well will be considered as background, while remaining outlier pixels will be considered foreground. This algorithm has been extensively tested on several images from HEVC standard test sequences for screen content coding, and is shown to have superior performance over other methods, such as the k-means clustering based segmentation algorithm in DjVu. This background/foreground segmentation can be used in different applications such as: text extraction, separate coding of background and foreground for compression of screen content and mixed content documents, principle line extraction from palmprint and crease detection in fingerprint images.
The foreground segmentation algorithms suffer performance degradation in the presence of various challenges such as dynamic backgrounds, and various illumination conditions. To handle these challenges, we present a foreground segmentation method, based on generative adversarial network (GAN). We aim to segment foreground objects in the presence of two aforementioned major challenges in background scenes in real environments. To address this problem, our presented GAN model is trained on background image samples with dynamic changes, after that for testing the GAN model has to generate the same…

We propose a foreground segmentation algorithm that does foreground extraction under different scales and refines the result by matting. First, the input image is filtered and resampled to 5 different resolutions. Then each of them is segmented by adaptive figure-ground classification and the best segmentation is automatically selected by an evaluation score that maximizes the difference between foreground and background. This segmentation is upsampled to the original size, and a corresponding trimap is built. Closed-form matting is employed to label the boundary region, and the result is refi…

Foreground segmentation in video sequences is a classic topic in computer vision. Due to the lack of semantic and prior knowledge, it is difficult for existing methods to deal with sophisticated scenes well. Therefore, in this paper, we propose an end-to-end two-stage deep convolutional neural network (CNN) framework for foreground segmentation in video sequences. In the first stage, a convolutional encoder-decoder sub-network is employed to reconstruct the background images and encode rich prior knowledge of background scenes. In the second stage, the reconstructed background and current fram…
For many tracking and surveillance applications, background subtraction provides an effective means of segmenting objects moving in front of a static background. Researchers have traditionally used combinations of morphological operations to remove the noise inherent in the background-subtracted result. Such techniques can effectively isolate foreground objects, but tend to lose fidelity around the borders of the segmentation, especially for noisy input. This paper explores the use of a minimum graph cut algorithm to segment the foreground, resulting in qualitatively and quantitiatively cleane…

In particular, we learn a generative adversarial network that decomposes an image into foreground and background layers, and avoid trivial decompositions by maximizing mutual information between generated images and latent variables. We propose the ambiguity problem for the foreground object segmentation task and motivate the importance of estimating and accounting for this ambiguity when designing vision systems. Specifically, we distinguish between images which lead multiple annotators to segment different foreground objects (ambiguous) versus minor inter-annotator differences of the same object. Taking images from eight widely used datasets, we crowdsource labeling the images as "ambiguous" or "not ambiguous" to segment in order to construct a new dataset we call STATIC. Using STATIC, we develop a system that automatica…

Partially supervised instance segmentation aims to improve mask prediction with limited mask labels by utilizing the more abundant weak box labels. In this work, we show that a class agnostic mask head, commonly used in partially supervised instance segmentation, has difficulties learning a general concept of foreground for the weakly annotated classes using box supervision only. To resolve this problem we introduce an object mask prior (OMP) that provides the mask head with the gen…

This paper presents a novel method of foreground segmentation that distinguishes moving objects from their moving cast shadows in monocular image sequences. The models of background, edge information, and shadow are set up and adaptively updated. A Bayesian belief network is proposed to describe the relationships among the segmentation label, background, intensity, and edge information. The notion of Markov random field is used to encourage the spatial connectivity of the segmented regions. The solution is obtained by maximizing the posterior possibility density of the segmentation field.

One popular approach to interactively segment the foreground object of interest from an image is to annotate a bounding box that covers the foreground object. Then, a binary labeling is performed to achieve a refined segmentation. One major issue of the existing algorithms for such interactive image segmentation is their preference of an input bounding box that tightly encloses the foreground object. This increases the annotation burden, and prevents these algorithms from utilizing automatically detected bounding boxes. In this paper, we develop a new LooseCut algorithm that can handle cases w…

Pixel-level annotations are expensive and time consuming to obtain. Hence, weak supervision using only image tags could have a significant impact in semantic segmentation. Recently, CNN-based methods have proposed to fine-tune pre-trained networks using image tags. Without additional information, this leads to poor localization accuracy. This problem, however, was alleviated by making use of objectness priors to generate foreground/background masks. Unfortunately these priors either require training pixel-level annotations/bounding boxes, or still yield inaccurate object boundaries. Here, we p…

Image segmentation in the urban scene has recently attracted much attention due to its success in autonomous driving systems.
