We consider shifts of a set $A\subseteq\mathbb{N}$ by elements from another set $B\subseteq\mathbb{N}$, and prove intersection properties according to the relative asymptotic size of $A$ and $B$. A consequence of our main theorem is the following: If $A=\{a_n\}$ is such that $a_n=o(n^{k/k-1})$, then the $k$-recurrence set $R_k(A)=\{x\mid |A\cap(A+x)|\ge k\}$ contains the distance sets of arbitrarily large finite sets.
We isolate conditions on the relative size of sets of natural numbers $A,B$ that guarantee a nonempty intersection $Δ(A)\capΔ(B)\ne\emptyset$ of the corresponding sets of distances. Such conditions apply to a large class of zero density sets. We also show that a variant of Khintchine's Recurrence Theorem holds for all infinite sets $A=\{a_1<a_2<...\}$ with $a_n\ll n^{3/2}$.
The intersection of two linear sets of rank 3 in PG(1,q^3)

In this article we construct new minimal intersection sets in ${\mathrm{AG}}(r,q^2)$ sporting three intersection numbers with hyperplanes; we then use these sets to obtain linear error correcting codes with few weights, whose weight enumerator we also determine. Furthermore, we provide a new family of three-character multisets in ${\mathrm{PG}}(r,q^2)$ with $r$ even and we also compute their weight distribution.
The aim of this paper is to investigate the intersection problem between two linear sets in the projective line over a finite field. In particular, we analyze the intersection between two clubs with eventually different maximum fields of linearity. Also, we analyze the intersection between the linear set defined by the polynomial $αx^{q^k}+βx$ and other linear sets having the same rank; this family contains the linear set of pseudoregulus type defined by $x^q$. The strategy relies on the study of certain algebraic curves whose rational points describe the intersection of the two linear sets. A…
The number of k-intersections of an intersecting family of r-sets
A two-intersection set with parameters $(j;α,β)$ for a block design is a $j$-subset of the point set of the design, which intersects every block in $α$ or $β$ points. In this paper, we show the existence of a two-intersection set with parameters $(2m^2-m+1;m^2-m,m^2)$ for the block design obtained from translations of the set of nonzero squares in the finite field of order $q=4m^2+1$. As an application, we give a construction of conference matrices with maximum excess based on the two-intersection sets.
A numerical monoid is an additive submonoid of the non-negative integers. Given a numerical monoid $S$, consider the family of "shifted" monoids $M_n$ obtained by adding $n$ to each generator of $S$. In this paper, we characterize the Apéry set of $M_n$ in terms of the Apéry set of the base monoid $S$ when $n$ is sufficiently large. We give a highly efficient algorithm for computing the Apéry set of $M_n$ in this case, and prove that several numerical monoid invariants, such as the genus and Frobenius number, are eventually quasipolynomial as a function of $n$.
Let $\mathcal A=\{A_1,\ldots,A_n\}$ be a family of sets in the plane. For $0 \leq i < n$, denote by $f_i$ the number of subsets $σ$ of $\{1,\ldots,n\}$ of cardinality $i+1$ that satisfy $\bigcap_{i \in σ} A_i \neq \emptyset$. Let $k \geq 2$ be an integer. We prove that if each $k$-wise and $(k+1)$-wise intersection of sets from $\mathcal A$ is empty, or a single point, or both open and path-connected, then $f_{k+1}=0$ implies $f_k \leq cf_{k-1}$ for some positive constant $c$ depending only on $k$. Similarly, let $b \geq 2, k > 2b$ be integers. We prove that if each $k$-wise or $(k+1)$-wise in…
Given sets $F_1, \ldots ,F_n$, a {\em partial rainbow function} is a partial choice function of the sets $F_i$. A {\em partial rainbow set} is the range of a partial rainbow function. Aharoni and Berger \cite{AhBer} conjectured that if $M$ and $N$ are matroids on the same ground set, and $F_1, \ldots ,F_n$ are pairwise disjoint sets of size $n$ belonging to $M \cap N$, then there exists a rainbow set of size $n-1$ belonging to $M \cap N$. Following an idea of Woolbright and Brower-de Vries-Wieringa, we prove that there exists such a rainbow set of size at least $n-\sqrt{n}$.
In this article, constant dimension subspace codes whose codewords have subspace distance in a prescribed set of integers, are considered. The easiest example of such an object is a {\it junta}; i.e. a subspace code in which all codewords go through a common subspace. We focus on the case when only two intersection values for the codewords, are assigned. In such a case we determine an upper bound for the dimension of the vector space spanned by the elements of a non-junta code. In addition, if the two intersection values are consecutive, we prove that such a bound is tight, and classify the ex…
A $(k,k-t)$-SCID (set of Subspaces with Constant Intersection Dimension) is a set of $k$-dimensional vector spaces that have pairwise intersections of dimension $k-t$. Let $\mathcal{C}=\{π_1,\ldots,π_n\}$ be a $(k,k-t)$-SCID. Define $S:=\langle π_1, \ldots, π_n \rangle$ and $I:=\langle π_i \cap π_j \mid 1 \leq i < j \leq n \rangle$. We establish several upper bounds for $\dim S + \dim I$ in different situations. We give a spectrum result for the case $(n-1)(k-t)\leq k$ and for the case $n\leq\frac{q^{t(n-η)}-1}{q^t-1}$, giving examples of $(k,k-t)$-SCIDs reaching a large interval of values for…
We prove that for a connected simple graph $G$ with $n\le 10$ vertices, and two longest paths $C$ and $D$ in $G$, the intersection of vertex sets $V(C)\cap V(D)$ is a separator. This shows that the graph found previously with $n=11$, in which the complement of the intersection of vertex sets $V(C)\cap V(D)$ of two longest paths is connected, is minimal.
In this paper, we investigate the classes of matroid intersection admitting a solution for the problem of partitioning the ground set $E$ into $k$ common independent sets, where $E$ can be partitioned into $k$ independent sets in each of the two matroids. For this problem, we present a new approach building upon the generalized-polymatroid intersection theorem. We exhibit that this approach offers alternative proofs and unified understandings of previous results showing that the problem has a solution for the intersection of two laminar matroids and that of two matroids without $(k+1)$-spanned…
We derive sharp upper and lower bounds on the number of intersection points and closed regions that can occur in sets of line segments with certain structure, in terms of the number of segments. We consider sets of segments whose underlying planar graphs are Halin graphs, cactus graphs, maximal planar graphs, and triangle-free planar graphs, as well as randomly produced segment sets. We also apply these results to a variant of the Erdős-Faber-Lovász (EFL) Conjecture stating that the intersection points of $m$ segments can be colored with $m$ colors so that no segment contains points with the s…
A {\em string graph} is the intersection graph of a family of continuous arcs in the plane. The intersection graph of a family of plane convex sets is a string graph, but not all string graphs can be obtained in this way. We prove the following structure theorem conjectured by Janson and Uzzell: The vertex set of {\em almost all} string graphs on $n$ vertices can be partitioned into {\em five} cliques such that some pair of them is not connected by any edge ($n\rightarrow\infty$). We also show that every graph with the above property is an intersection graph of plane convex sets. As a corollar…
A family of sets in the plane is simple if the intersection of its any subfamily is arc-connected, and it is pierced by a line $L$ if the intersection of its any member with $L$ is a nonempty segment. It is proved that the intersection graphs of simple families of compact arc-connected sets in the plane pierced by a common line have chromatic number bounded by a function of their clique number.
Following an approach presented by N. Frantzikinakis, B. Host and B. Kra, we show that the parameters in the multidimensional Szemerédi theorem for closest integer polynomials have non-empty intersection with the set of shifted primes $\mathbb{P}-1$ (or similarly of $\mathbb{P}+1$). Using the Furstenberg Correspondence Principle, we show this result by recasting it as a polynomial multiple recurrence result in measure ergodic theory. Furthermore, we obtain integer part polynomial convergence results by the same method, which is a transference principle that enables one to deduce results for $\…
Given a finite set $X$ of points in $R^n$ and a family $F$ of sets generated by the pairs of points of $X$, we determine volumetric and structural conditions for the sets that allow us to guarantee the existence of a positive-fraction subfamily $F'$ of $F$ for which the sets have non-empty intersection. This allows us to show the existence of weak epsilon-nets for these families. We also prove a topological variation of the existence of weak epsilon-nets for convex sets.
It is proved that there are triangle-free intersection graphs of line segments in the plane with arbitrarily small ratio between the maximum size of an independent set and the total number of vertices.
We introduce the cycle intersection graph of a graph, an adaptation of the cycle graph of a graph, and use the structure of these graphs to prove an upper bound for the decycling number of all even graphs. This bound is shown to be significantly better when an even graph admits a cycle decomposition in which any two cycles intersect in at most one vertex. Links between the cycle rank of the cycle intersection graph of an even graph and the decycling number of the even graph itself are found. The problem of choosing an ideal cycle decomposition is addressed and is presented as an optimization p…
Let $\mathcal F\subset 2^{[n]}$ be a family in which any three sets have non-empty intersection and any two sets have at least $38$ elements in common. The nearly best possible bound $|\mathcal F|\le 2^{n-2}$ is proved. We believe that $38$ can be replaced by $3$ and provide a simple-looking conjecture that would imply this.
The main result is a common generalization of results on lower bounds for the chromatic number of r-uniform hypergraphs and some of the major theorems in Tverberg-type theory, which is concerned with the intersection pattern of faces in a simplicial complex when continuously mapped to Euclidean space. As an application we get a simple proof of a generalization of a result of Kriz for certain parameters. This specializes to a short and simple proof of Kneser's conjecture. Moreover, combining this result with recent work of Mabillard and Wagner we show that the existence of certain equivariant m…
We say that a family $\mathcal F$ of $k$-element sets is a {\it $j$-junta} if there is a set $J$ of size $j$ such that, for any $F$, its presence in $\mathcal F$ depends on its intersection with $J$ only. Approximating arbitrary families by $j$-juntas with small $j$ is a recent powerful technique in extremal set theory. The weak point of all known junta approximation results is that they work in the range $n>Ck$, where $C$ is an extremely fast growing function of the input parameters, such as the quality of approximation or the number of families we simultaneously approximate. We say that a fa…

We propose the concepts of intersection distribution and non-hitting index, which can be viewed from two related perspectives. The first one concerns a point set $S$ of size $q+1$ in the classical projective plane $PG(2,q)$, where the intersection distribution of $S$ indicates the intersection pattern between $S$ and the lines in $PG(2,q)$. The second one relates to a polynomial $f$ over a finite field $\mathbb{F}_q$, where the intersection distribution of $f$ records an overall distribution property of a collection of polynomials $\{f(x)+cx \mid c \in \mathbb{F}_q\}$. These two perspectives a…
The cop number of a graph $G$ is the smallest $k$ such that $k$ cops win the game of cops and robber on $G$. We investigate the maximum cop number of geometric intersection graphs, which are graphs whose vertices are represented by geometric shapes and edges by their intersections. We establish the following dichotomy for previously studied classes of intersection graphs: The intersection graphs of arc-connected sets in the plane (called string graphs) have cop number at most 15, and more generally, the intersection graphs of arc-connected subsets of a surface have cop number at most $10g+15$ …
Given a family of sets on the plane, we say that the family is intersecting if for any two sets from the family their interiors intersect. In this paper, we study intersecting families of triangles with vertices in a given set of points. In particular, we show that if a set $P$ of $n$ points is in convex position, then the largest intersecting family of triangles with vertices in $P$ contains at most $(\frac{1}{4}+o(1))\binom{n}{3}$ triangles.
When each vertex is assigned a set, the intersection graph generated by the sets is the graph in which two distinct vertices are joined by an edge if and only if their assigned sets have a nonempty intersection. An interval graph is an intersection graph generated by intervals in the real line. A chordal graph can be considered as an intersection graph generated by subtrees of a tree. In 1999, Karoński, Scheinerman and Singer-Cohen [Combin Probab Comput 8 (1999), 131--159] introduced a random intersection graph by taking randomly assigned sets. The random intersection graph $G(n,m;p)$ has $n$ …
