The 100+ free parameters of the minimal supersymmetric standard model (MSSM) make it computationally difficult to compare systematically with data, motivating the study of specific parameter reductions such as the cMSSM and pMSSM. Here we instead study the reductions of parameter space implied by using minimal flavour violation (MFV) to organise the R-parity conserving MSSM, with a view towards systematically building in constraints on flavour-violating physics. Within this framework the space of parameters is reduced by expanding soft supersymmetry-breaking terms in powers of the Cabibbo angle, leading to a 24-, 30- or 42-parameter framework (which we call MSSM-24, MSSM-30, and MSSM-42 respectively), depending on the order kept in the expansion. We provide a Bayesian global fit to data of the MSSM-30 parameter set to show that this is manageable with current tools. We compare the MFV reductions to the 19-parameter pMSSM choice and show that the pMSSM is not contained as a subset. The MSSM-30 analysis favours a relatively lighter TeV-scale pseudoscalar Higgs boson and $\tan β\sim 10$ with multi-TeV sparticles.
We apply the effective field theory definition of Minimal Flavour Violation (MFV) to the MSSM. We explicitly show how, by this definition, the new sources of flavour and CP violation present in the MSSM become functions of the SM Yukawa couplings, and cannot be simply set to zero, as is common wisdom in phenomenological MSSM studies that assume MFV. We apply our approach to the MSSM Delta B = 2 Hamiltonian at low tan(beta). The limit of MFV amounts to a striking increase in the predictivity of the model. In particular, SUSY corrections to meson-antimeson mass differences Delta M(d,s) are alway…
We analyse a minimal supersymmetric standard model (MSSM) taking a minimal flavour violation (MFV) structure at the GUT scale. We evaluate the parameters at the electroweak scale taking into account the full flavour structure in the evolution of the renormalization group equations. We concentrate mainly on the decay Bs -> mu mu and its correlations with other observables like b -> s gamma, b -> s l l, Delta M_Bs and the anomalous magnetic moment of the muon. We restrict our analysis to the regions in parameter space consistent with the dark matter constraints. We find that the BR(Bs -> mu mu) …
We present a MSSM study of the b -> s gamma decay in a Minimal Flavor Violating (MFV) framework, where the form of the soft SUSY breaking terms is determined by the Standard Model Yukawa couplings. In particular, we address the role of gluino contributions, which are set to zero in most studies of the MFV MSSM. Gluino contributions can play an important role in the MFV MSSM whenever mu * tan(beta) is large. In fact, similarly to chargino contributions, gluino contributions are tan(beta) enhanced and can easily dominate charged Higgs contributions for large values of tan(beta). Even though each…
The rare kaon decays K_L -> pi^0 nu {bar nu}, K^+ -> pi^+ nu {bar nu}, K_L -> pi^0 e^+ e^- and K_L -> pi^0 mu^+ mu^- are theoretically very clean and, being strongly CKM suppressed, highly sensitive to New Physics (NP). Recent Flavour Physics analyses show that they represent unique probes for revealing NP effects and to provide information on the NP flavour structure. After a brief discussion of the main properties that make rare K decays so promising and of the basic ideas of the most interesting NP models, we review the results of recent phenomenological analyses both within and beyond the …
We study the minimal supersymmetric standard model (MSSM) with minimal flavor violation (MFV), imposing constraints from flavor physics observables and MSSM Higgs searches, in light of the recent discovery of a 125 GeV Higgs boson by ATLAS and CMS. We analyze the electroweak vacuum stability conditions to further restrict the MSSM parameter space. In addition, a connection to ultraviolet physics is shown via an implementation of renormalization group running, which determines the TeV-scale spectrum from a small set of minimal supergravity parameters. Finally, we investigate the impact from dar…
Under the assumption of Minimal Flavour Violation (MFV), the Unitarity Triangle (UT) can be determined by using only angle measurements and tree-level observables. In this respect, the most accurate quantities today available are sin 2 beta_{psi Ks}, |Vcb| and |Vub|. Among the latter, |Vub| is at present the quantity suffering from largest systematic uncertainties, given the discrepancy between the inclusive and the exclusive determinations. We show with a numerical fit how sensitively the MFV-UT determination depends on the choice of |Vub|. In addition, we focus on the implications of the inc…
We consider the flavor structure of the minimal supersymmetric standard model (MSSM) in the framework of `minimal flavor violation' (MFV). We show that, if one imposes the MFV structure at some scale, to a good accuracy the MFV decomposition works at all other scales. That is, quantum effects can be described by running coefficients of the MFV decomposition. We find that the coefficients get driven to non-trivial fixed points.
In supersymmetric scenarios with a light stop particle $\tilde{t}_1$ and a small mass difference to the lightest supersymmetric particle (LSP) assumed to be the lightest neutralino, the flavour changing neutral current decay $\tilde{t}_1 \to c \tildeχ_1^0$ can be the dominant decay channel and can exceed the four-body stop decay for certain parameter values. In the framework of Minimal Flavour Violation (MFV) this decay is CKM-suppressed, thus inducing long stop lifetimes. Stop decay length measurements at the LHC can then be exploited to test models with minimal flavour breaking through Stand…
We provide a short account of the effects one expects on meson-antimeson oscillations in the context of the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model (MSSM). This issue is largely dependent on the assumptions made on the MSSM parameter space. In this respect, we consider in closer detail the cases of the general MSSM, with completely free soft terms, and the Minimal Flavor Violating limit of the MSSM, providing a natural mechanism of near-flavor-conservation. For the case of meson oscillations in the Delta B = 2 sector, we show that this approach leads to a striking increase of the predictivity of…
The CP-violating phenomenology of the MSSM with Minimal Flavor Violation (MFV) in the lepton sector is revisited. To this end, the most general parametrizations of the slepton soft-breaking terms are constructed assuming a seesaw mechanism of type I. After a critical reassessment of how the CP-symmetry is broken within the MFV framework, all possible CP-violating phases are introduced. From the strong hierarchy of their contributions to the Electric Dipole Moments (EDMs), these phases are split into three classes: flavor-blind, flavor-diagonal and flavor off-diagonal. In particular, the phases…
The recently reported measurements of the CP asymmetry a(psi K) by the BABAR and BELLE collaborations are in good agreement with the standard model (SM) prediction, resulting from the unitarity of the CKM matrix. The so-called minimal flavour violating (MFV) supersymmetric extensions of the standard model, in which the CKM matrix remains the only flavour changing structure, predict a(psi K) similar to the one in the SM. With the anticipated precision in a(psi K) and other CP asymmetries at the B factories and hadron colliders, one hopes to pin down any possible deviation from the SM. We discus…
We study the quark flavor violating Higgs-boson decay $h \rightarrow \bar b s + b \bar s$ in the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model (MSSM). The decay is analyzed first in a model independent, and in a second step in the minimal flavor violationg (MFV) Constrained MSSM. The experimental constraints from $B$-Physics observables (BPO) and electroweak precision observables (EWPO) are also calculated and imposed on the parameter space. It is shown that in some cases the EWPO restrict the flavor violating parameter space stronger than the BPO. In the model independent analysis values of ${\cal O}…
A peculiar aspect of the MSSM, the simplest supersymmetric extension of the Standard Model, is that it is usually defined including an ad hoc symmetry, R-parity, whose sole purpose is to forbid rapid proton decay. This symmetry deeply alters the phenomenology of the MSSM, and renders the experimental search strategies quite involved. Besides, the MSSM suffers from a number of flavor puzzles. Generically, the superparticle contributions to Flavor Changing Neutral Currents (FCNC) are too large compared to experiment, both in the quark and lepton sectors. The Minimal Flavor Violation (MFV) hypoth…
The Minimal Flavor Violation hypothesis (MFV) is extended to the R-parity violating MSSM, supplemented with a simple seesaw mechanism. The requirement of MFV is shown to suppress lepton and baryon-number violating couplings sufficiently to pass all experimental bounds, in particular those for proton decay, and is thus a viable alternative to R-parity. The phenomenological consequences for FCNC, LFV and colliders are briefly discussed. Typically, MFV predicts sizeable baryon-number violation in some characteristic channels, like single stop resonant production.
We present a new mechanism to generate large $A$-terms at tree-level in the MSSM through the use of superpotential operators. The mechanism trivially resolves the $A/m^2$ problem which plagues models with conventional, loop-induced $A$-terms. We study both MFV and non-MFV models; in the former, naturalness motivates us to construct a UV completion using Seiberg duality. Finally, we study the phenomenology of these models when they are coupled to minimal gauge mediation. We find that after imposing the Higgs mass constraint, they are largely out of reach of LHC Run I, but they will be probed at…
We discuss the implications of B_s -> mu+mu- and B -> K*mu+mu- decays in the context of indirect searches for new physics, emphasising the new LHCb results. In particular, we derive the consequences of the MFV hypothesis and discuss the importance of the MFV predictions. The impact of the recent LHCb measurements in the context of the MSSM will also be addressed, and the SuperIso program will be briefly described.
We present results of our study of tan(beta)-enhanced loop corrections in the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model (MSSM) with Minimal Flavour Violation (MFV). We demonstrate that these corrections induce flavour changing neutral current (FCNC) gluino couplings which have a large impact on the Wilson coefficient C_8 of the chromomagnetic operator. To illustrate the phenomenological consequences of this gluino-squark contribution to C_8, we briefly discuss its effect on the mixing-induced CP asymmetry in the decay B_d -> phi K_S.
Models of extended gauge mediation, in which large A-terms arise through direct messenger-MSSM superpotential couplings, are well-motivated by the discovery of the 125 GeV Higgs. However, since these models are not necessarily MFV, the flavor constraints could be stringent. In this paper, we perform the first detailed and quantitative study of the flavor violation in these models. To facilitate our study, we introduce a new tool called FormFlavor for computing precision flavor observables in the general MSSM. We validate FormFlavor and our qualitative understanding of the flavor violation in t…
We have recently completed a detailed scan of the 19-dimensional parameter space of the phenomenological MSSM, i.e., the CP-conserving MSSM assuming Minimal Flavor Violation(MFV) with the first two sfermion generations degenerate. We found a large set of parameter space points that satisfied all of the existing experimental and theoretical constraints. This analysis allows us to examine the general features of the MSSM without reference to any particular SUSY breaking scenario or any other assumptions about physics at higher scales. This study opens up new possibilities for SUSY phenomenology …
We reappraise the question whether the Standard Model, and Minimal Flavor Violating (MFV) models at large, can simultaneously describe the observed CP violation in the K- and Bd-systems. We find that CP violation in the Bd-system, measured most precisely through (sin 2 beta)_{J/psi Ks}, implies |epsilon_K^{SM}| = 1.78(25) x 10^{-3} for the parameter epsilon_K, measuring indirect CP violation in the K-system, to be compared with the experimental value |epsilon_K^{exp}| = 2.23(1) x 10^{-3}. To bring this prediction to 1 sigma agreement with experiment, we explore then the simplest new-physics po…
Additional sources of CP violation in the MSSM may affect B-meson mixings and decays, even in scenarios with minimal flavour violation (MFV). We formulate the maximally CP-violating and minimally flavour-violating (MCPMFV) variant of the MSSM, which has 19 parameters, including 6 phases that violate CP. We then develop a manifestly flavour-covariant effective Lagrangian formalism for calculating Higgs-mediated FCNC observables in the MSSM at large tan(beta), and analyze within the MCPMFV framework FCNC and other processes involving B mesons. We include a new class of dominant subleading contri…
In this paper, we first demonstrate the existence of renormalization group invariant relations among the top, bottom Yukawa and the gauge colour couplings in the minimal supersymmetric SM. Based on this observation and assuming furthermore the existence of a renormalization group invariant relation among the trilinear couplings in the superpotential and the soft supersymmetry breaking sector, we obtain predictions for the Higgs masses and the supersymmetric spectrum.
We study the extension of the Minimal Flavour Violation (MFV) hypothesis to the MSSM without R-parity. The novelty of our approach lies in the observation that supersymmetry enhances the global symmetry of the kinetic term and in the fact that we consider as irreducible sources of the flavour symmetry breaking all the couplings of the superpotential including the R-parity violating ones. If R-parity violation is responsible for neutrino masses, our setup can be seen as an extension of MFV to the lepton sector. We analyze two patterns based on the non-abelian flavour symmetries SU(3)^4 \otimes …
The recently reported measurements of the CP asymmetry a(psi K) by the BABAR and BELLE collaborations are in good agreement with the standard model prediction. With the anticipated precision in a(psi K) at the B factories and hadron colliders, one hopes to pin down any possible deviation from the SM. We discuss an extension of the MFV-supersymmetric models which comfortably accommodates the current measurements of the CP asymmetry a(psi K), but differs from the SM due to an additional flavour changing structure beyond the CKM matrix. We analyze the compatibility of this model with present data…
We consider the effects of departures from minimal flavour violations (MFV) in the context of CMSSM-like theories. Second and third generation off-diagonal elements in the Yukawa, sfermion, and trilinear mass matrices are taken to be non-zero at the GUT scale. These are run down together with MSSM parameters to the electroweak scale. We apply constraints from fermion masses and CKM matrix elements to limit the range of the new free parameters of the model. We determine the effect of the departure from MFV on the branching ratio of b->s gamma. We find that only when the expansion parameter in t…
We present an application of the reduction of couplings program in the minimal supersymmetric Standard Model (MSSM). We investigate if a functional relation between $α_1$ and $α_2$ gauge couplings can be realized which is Renormalization Group Invariant (RGI). Following the same procedure for the top and bottom Yukawa couplings we end up with a prediction of a narrow window for tan$β$, which is one of the basic parameters that determine the light Higgs mass.
In the present work we search for renormalization group invariant relations among the various massless and massive parameters of the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model. We find that indeed several of the previously free parameters of the model can be reduced in favor of few, the unique gauge coupling and the gaugino mass at the unification scale among them. Taking into account the various experimental constraints, including the B-physics ones, we predict the Higgs and the supersymmetric spectrum. We find that the lightest Higgs mass is in comfortable agreement with the measured value and it…
The evaluation of three-loop contributions to the MSSM Higgs-boson mass is considered at the orders enhanced by the strong gauge coupling and top or bottom Yukawa couplings, i.e. at the orders $O(α_{t,b}α_s^2,α_{t,b}^2α_s,α_{t,b}^3)$. We prove that regularization by dimensional reduction preserves supersymmetry at the required level. Thus generating counterterms by multiplicative renormalization is correct. Technically, we extend a previous two-loop analysis to the three-loop level. The extension covers not only the genuine three-loop Higgs potential counterterms but also a large sector of two…
Using dimensional reduction we construct an effective 3D theory of the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model at finite temperature. The final effective theory is obtained after three successive stages of integration out of massive particles. We obtain the full 1-loop relation between the couplings of the reduced theory and the underlying 4D couplings and masses. The procedure is also applied to a general two Higgs doublet model and the Next to Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model.
The evaluation of Yukawa-enhanced two-loop contributions to the MSSM Higgs-boson mass is considered. We prove the common assumption that regularization by dimensional reduction preserves supersymmetry at the required level. Thus generating counterterms by multiplicative renormalization is correct. Technically, we identify a suitable Slavnov-Taylor identity, use a recently developed method to evaluate it at the two-loop level, and show that it is valid in dimensional reduction.
We apply the method of reduction of couplings in a Finite Unified Theory and in the MSSM. The method consists on searching for renormalization group invariant relations among couplings of a renormalizable theory holding to all orders in perturbation theory. It has a remarkable predictive power since, at the unification scale, it leads to relations between gauge and Yukawa couplings in the dimensionless sectors and relations involving the trilinear terms and the Yukawa couplings, as well as a sum rule among the scalar masses and the unified gaugino mass in the soft breaking sector. In both the …
The FeynArts model file MSSMdreg2dred.mod implements MSSM transition counterterms which can convert one-loop Green functions from dimensional regularization to dimensional reduction. They correspond to a slight extension of the well-known Martin/Vaughn counterterms, specialized to the MSSM, and can serve also as supersymmetry-restoring counterterms. The paper provides full analytic results for the counterterms and gives one- and two-loop usage examples. The model file can simplify combining MSbar-parton distribution functions with supersymmetric renormalization or avoiding the renormalization …
We review the analysis of the 5 sigma discovery contours for the charged MSSM Higgs boson at the CMS experiment with 30 fb^-1 for the two cases M_H+ < m_t and M_H+ > m_t. Latest results for the CMS experimental sensitivities based on full simulation studies are combined with state-of-the-art theoretical predictions of MSSM Higgs-boson production and decay properties. Special focus is put on the SUSY parameter dependence of the 5 sigma contours. The variation of mu can shift the prospective discovery reach in tan_beta by up to Delta tan_beta = 40. We furthermore discuss various theory uncertain…
We re-assess the exclusion limits on the parameters describing the supersymmetric (SUSY) electroweak sector of the MSSM obtained from the search for direct chargino-neutralino production at the LHC. We start from published limits obtained in simplified models, where for the case of heavy sleptons the relevant branching ratio, BR(neu2->neu1 Z), is set to one. We show how the decay mode neu2->neu1 h, which cannot be neglected in any realistic model once kinematically allowed, substantially reduces the excluded parameter region. We analyze the dependence of the excluded regions on the phase of th…
In this analysis we explore the phenomenological constraints of models with non-holomorphic soft SUSY breaking terms in a beyond the MSSM scenario having identical particle content. The model referred as NHSSM shows various promising features like the possibility of a strong reduction in electroweak fine-tuning even for a scenario of a heavy higgsino type of LSP, a fact that is unavailable in pMSSM models. The other important aspect is satisfying the muon $g-2$ data even for a small $\tanβ$ via a small value of coupling $A_μ'$ associated with the tri-linear non-holomorphic soft term. Thus, a l…
Models with an approximate U(2)^3 flavour symmetry represent simple non-MFV extensions of the SM. We compare correlations of Delta F = 2 observables in CMFV and in a minimal version of U(2)^3 models, MU(2)^3, where only the minimal set of spurions for breaking the symmetry is used and where only SM operators are relevant. Due to the different treatment of the third generation MU(2)^3 models avoid the Delta M_{s,d}-|epsilon_K| correlation of CMFV which precludes to solve the S_{psi K_S}- |epsilon_K| tension present in the flavour data. While the flavour structure in K meson system is the same f…
I describe work done in collaboration with M. Joyce and K. Kainulainen on (1) the strength of the electroweak phase transition in the MSSM and (2) the mechanism for producing the baryon asymmetry during the phase transition. In the former we compare the effective potential and dimensional reduction methods for describing the phase transition and search the parameter space of the MSSM for those values where it is strong enough. In the latter we give a systematic computation of the baryon asymmetry due the CP-violating force acting on charginos in the vicinity of the bubble wall. We find that a …

The electroweak phase transition provides the most attractive framework to account for the baryon asymmetry of the universe. Comparing results of perturbative and nonperturbative studies is not straightforward, however, due to the different coupling constant definitions. The perturbative one stems from the $\bar{\mathrm{MS}}$ subtraction scheme, while the nonperturbative one uses the static quark potential. The momentum-space perturbative static potential is calculated in the SU(2)--Higgs model, and is Fourier transformed into coordinate space. Based on the connection between the coupling cons…
