Magnetic fields in an accretion disk around the central black hole can modify the position of the innermost stable circular orbit (ISCO) radius and produces the difference for the classical Novikov-Thorne radius. We estimated the ISCO magnetic field strength on the base of polarimetric observations of the accretion disk radiation. This estimate can be obtained with taking into account the effect of Faraday rotation of the polarization plane at the length of the free path of photon between successive electron scattering events. In a result we presented the new method for real estimation of the ISCO radius in the accretion disk, i.e. in the nearest vicinity of a central black hole. Our estimations confirmed the V.P. Frolov, A.A. Shoom and C. Tzounis (2014) conclusion that magnetic field produces the effect in a result of which the innermost stable circular orbit becomes closer to the horizon of a black hole.
We investigate the local supermassive black hole (SMBH) density function and relative mass accretion rates of all active galactic nuclei (AGNs) identified in a volume-limited sample of infrared (IR) bright galaxies (L_IR > 3 x 10^9 L_sun) to D<15 Mpc (Goulding & Alexander 2009). A database of accurate SMBH mass (M_BH) estimates is compiled from literature sources using physically motivated AGN modeling techniques (reverberation mapping, maser mapping and gas kinematics) and well-established indirect M_BH estimation methods (the M-sigma and M_BH-L_(K,bul) relations). For the three sources witho…
We estimated the magnetic field strength at the event horizon for a sample of supermassive black holes (SMBHs) in active galactic nuclei (AGNs). Our estimates were made using the values of the inclination angles of the accretion disk to the line of sight, that we obtained previously from spectropolarimetric observations in the visible spectrum. We also used published values of full width at half maximum (FWHM) of spectral line $H_β$ from broad line region, masses of SMBHs and luminosity of AGNs at 5100 angstrom. In addition we used literature data on the spins of SMBHs obtained from their X-ra…
In the current paradigm, it is believed that the compact VLBI radio core of radio-loud AGNs represents the innermost upstream regions of relativistic outflows. These regions of AGN jets have generally been modeled by a conical outflow with roughly constant opening angle and flow speed. Nonetheless, some works suggest that a parabolic geometry would be more appropriate to fit the high energy spectral energy distribution properties and it has been recently found that, at least in some nearby radio-galaxies, the geometry of the innermost regions of the jet is parabolic. We compile here multi-freq…
Accreting supermassive black holes (SMBHs) can exhibit variable emission across the electromagnetic spectrum and over a broad range of timescales. The variability of active galactic nuclei (AGNs) in the ultraviolet and optical is usually at the few tens of per cent level over timescales of hours to weeks. Recently, rare, more dramatic changes to the emission from accreting SMBHs have been observed, including tidal disruption events, 'changing look' AGNs and other extreme variability objects. The physics behind the 're-ignition', enhancement and 'shut-down' of accretion onto SMBHs is not entire…
Radio-Loud (RL) Active Galactic Nuclei (AGNs) are among the brightest astrophysical sources at all wavelengths. Their relativistic jets can affect both their Supermassive Black Holes (SMBHs) growth and the surrounding intergalactic medium. While in the radio band these jets can be observed at all scales (from pc to Mpc scales), their X-ray and γ-ray emission is expected to be concentrated on very small scales (<10 pc). However, after the launch of the Chandra X-ray telescope, several kpc-scale jets were detected and the mechanism responsible for their high-energy radiation at these scales is s…
We examine the contribution of high-redshift (z>6) active galactic nuclei (AGNs) to cosmic hydrogen reionization, by tracing the growth and ionizing output of the first generation of supermassive black holes (SMBHs). Our calculations are anchored to the observed population of z~6 quasars, and trace back the evolving spectral energy distributions (SEDs) of the accretion flows that power these early AGNs and consider a variety of growth histories, including super-Eddington accretion. Compared to a fixed-shape SED, the evolving thin disks can produce ionizing radiation that is higher by up to ~80…
Here we present the detailed investigation of AGNs in two Seyfert 1 galaxies, LEDA 3095839 and VII Zw 244. Both of them were observed within the photometric reverberation mapping project in Special Astrophysical Observatory of the Russian Academy of Sciences (SAO RAS), during which we earlier obtained the SMBHs masses. After that, both galaxies were observed in spectropolarimetric and polarimetric modes on the BTA 6 m telescope of the SAO RAS with the focal reducer SCORPIO-2. The linear polarization of the continuum and broad Balmer lines has been measured. It was found that (i) there were no …
There is strong observational evidence that many active galactic nuclei (AGNs) harbour supermassive black holes (SMBHs), demonstrating multi-accretion episodes during their lifetime. In such AGNs, corotating and counterrotating tori, or strongly misaligned disks, as related to the central SMBH spin, can report traces of the AGNs evolution. Here we concentrate on aggregates of accretion disks structures, ringed accretion disks (RADs) orbiting a central Kerr SMBH, assuming that each torus of the RADs is centered in the equatorial plane of the BH, tori are coplanar and axisymmetric. Many RAD aspe…
For a compiled sample of 120 reverberation-mapped AGNs, the bivariate correlations of the broad-line regions (BLRs) size ($R_{\rm BLR}$) with the continuum luminosity at 5100 Å ($L_{5100}$) and the dimensionless accretion rates ($\dot{\mathscr{M}}$) are investigated. Using our recently calibrated virial factor $f$, and the velocity tracer from the H$β$ Full-width at half-maximum (FWHM(H$β$)) or the line dispersion ($σ_{\rm Hβ}$) measured in the mean spectra, three kinds of SMBH masses and $\dot{\mathscr{M}}$ are calculated. An extended \RL relation including $\dot{\mathscr{M}}$ is found to be …
The spin of a supermassive black hole (SMBH) is directly related to the radiative efficiency of accretion on to the hole, and therefore impacts the amount of fuel required for the black hole to reach a certain mass. Thus, a knowledge of the SMBH spin distribution and evolution is necessary to develop a comprehensive theory of the growth of SMBHs and their impact on galaxy formation. Currently, the only direct measurement of SMBH spin is through fitting the broad Fe K line in AGNs. The evolution of spins could be determined by fitting the broad line in the integrated spectra of AGNs over differ…
From a Chandra sample of active galactic nuclei (AGNs) in nearby galaxies, we find that for low-luminosity AGNs (LLAGNs), either the intrinsic absorption column density, or the fraction of absorbed AGNs, positively scales with the Eddington ratio for $L_{\rm bol}/L_{\rm Edd} \lesssim 10^{-2}$. Such a behavior, along with the softness of the X-ray spectrum at low luminosities, is in good agreement with the picture that they are powered by hot accretion flows surrounding supermassive black holes. Numerical simulations find that outflows are inevitable with hot accretion flows, and the outflow ra…
It is well established that a dominant phase in the growth of massive galaxies occurred at high redshift and was heavily obscured by gas and dust. Many studies have explored the stellar growth of massive galaxies but few have combined these constraints with the growth of the supermassive black hole (SMBH; i.e., identified as AGN activity). In this brief contribution we highlight our work aimed at identifying AGNs in z~2 luminous dust-obscured galaxies. Using both sensitive X-ray and infrared (IR)-submillimeter (submm) observations, we show that AGN activity is common in z~2 dust-obscured syste…
In the $Λ$CDM scenario, small galaxies merge to produce larger entities. Since supermassive black holes (SMBHs) are found in galaxies of all sizes, SMBH binaries (SMBHBs) are generally expected to form during the amalgamation of galaxies. It is unclear what fraction of these binaries could eventually merge, but a general consensus is that initially the orbital decay is mediated by the surrounding gas and stars. In this Letter, we show that in active galactic nulcei (AGNs) the radiation field also causes the orbits of the accreting SMBHs to shrink. The corresponding mechanism, known as the "Poy…
The disks of Active Galactic Nuclei (AGNs), traditionally studied as the feeders of the supermassive black holes (SMBHs) at their centers, have recently triggered a lot of interest also as hosts to massive stars and hence their neutron star (NS) and black hole (BH) remnants. Migration traps and gas torques in these disks favor binary formation and enhance the rate of compact object mergers. In these environments both long gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) from the death of massive stars and short GRBs from NS-NS and NS-BH mergers are expected. However, their properties in the unique environments of AGN …
Ringed accretion disks (RADs) are aggregates of corotating and counterrotating toroidal accretion disks orbiting a central Kerr super-massive Black Hole (SMBH) in AGNs. The dimensionless spin of the central BH and the fluids relative rotation are proved to strongly affect the RAD dynamics. There is evidence of a strict correlation between SMBH spin, fluid rotation and magnetic fields in RADs formation and evolution. Recently, the model was extended to consider RADs constituted by several magnetized accretion tori and the effects of a toroidal magnetic field in RAD dynamics have been investigat…
We present new Keck/MOSFIRE K-band spectroscopy for a sample of 14 faint, X-ray-selected active galactic nuclei (AGNs) in the COSMOS field. The data cover the spectral region surrounding the broad Balmer emission lines, which enables the estimation of black hole masses (M_BH) and accretion rates (in terms of L/L_Edd). We focus on 10 AGN at z~3.3, where we observe the Hbeta spectral region, while for the other four z~2.4 sources we use the Halpha broad emission line. Compared with previous detailed studies of unobscured AGNs at these high redshifts, our sources are fainter by an order of magnit…
Sgr A* represents a unique laboratory for the detailed study of accretion processes around a low-luminosity supermassive black hole (SMBH). Recent X-ray observations have allowed for spatially resolved modeling of the emission from the accretion flow around the SMBH, placing tight constraints on the flux and spectral shape of the accretion from the inner region with $r<10^3~r_g$, where $r_g$ is the gravitational radius of the black hole. We present here the first modeling of the multi-band spectral energy distribution (SED) of this inner region to better constrain the physical condition of the…
Galaxy mergers are expected to produce multiple supermassive black holes (SMBHs) in close-separation, but the detection of such SMBHs has been difficult. 2MASS J165939.7$+$183436 is a red active galactic nucleus (AGN) that is a prospective merging SMBH candidate owing to its merging features in Hubble Space Telescope imaging and double-peaked broad emission lines (BELs). Herein, we report a Gemini Multi-Object Spectrograph Integral Field Unit observation of a double-peaked broad H$α$ line of 2MASS J165939.7$+$183436. Furthermore, we confirm the existence of two BEL peaks that are kinematically…
Several processes may limit the accretion rate onto a super-massive black hole (SMBH). Two processes that are commonly considered (e.g., for sub-grid prescriptions) are Bondi-Hoyle-Lyttleton accretion and the Eddington limit. A third one is AGN wind feedback. It has been long suggested that such a wind feedback regulates the final SMBH mass, however, it has been shown recently that AGN winds can also regulate the average accretion rate at a level consistent with observations of high redshift AGNs. In this paper we study the effect of wind feedback on the accretion rate using 2D, high resolutio…
Super-massive black holes (SMBHs) hosted in active galactic nuclei (AGNs) can be characterized by multi-accreting periods as the attractors interact with the environment during their life-time. These multi-accretion episodes should leave traces in the matter orbiting the attractor. Counterrotating and even misaligned structures orbiting around the SMBHs would be consequences of these episodes. Our task in this work is to consider situations where such accretions occur and to trace their remnants represented by several toroidal accreting fluids, corotating or counterrotating relative to the cen…
Theory predicts that a supermassive black hole binary (SMBHB) could be observed as a luminous active galactic nucleus (AGN) that periodically varies on the order of its orbital timescale. In X-rays, periodic variations could be caused by mechanisms including relativistic Doppler boosting and shocks. Here we present the first systematic search for periodic AGNs using $941$ hard X-ray light curves (14-195 keV) from the first 105 months of the Swift Burst Alert Telescope (BAT) survey (2004-2013). We do not find evidence for periodic AGNs in Swift-BAT, including the previously reported SMBHB candi…
We study the link between the X-ray emission in radio-quiet AGNs and the accretion rate on the central Supermassive Black-Hole (SMBH) using a well-defined and statistically complete sample of 70 type1 AGNs extracted from the XMM-Newton Bright Serendipitous survey (XBS). To this end, we search and quantify the statistical correlations between the main parameters that characterize the X-ray emission (i.e. the X-ray spectral slope and the X-ray loudness), and the accretion rate, both absolute and relative to the Eddington limit (Eddington ratio). Here, we summarize and discuss the main statistica…
Elusive supermassive black hole binaries (SMBHBs) are thought to be the penultimate stage of galaxy mergers, preceding a final coalescence phase. SMBHBs are sources of continuous gravitational waves, possibly detectable by pulsar timing arrays; the identification of candidates could help in performing targeted gravitational wave searches. Due to their origin in the innermost parts of active galactic nuclei (AGN), X-rays are a promising tool to unveil the presence of SMBHBs, by means of either double Fe K$α$ emission lines or periodicity in their light curve. Here we report on a new method to s…
A crucial challenge in astrophysics over the coming decades will be to understand the origins of supermassive black holes (SMBHs) that lie at the centres of most, if not all, galaxies. The processes responsible for the initial formation of these SMBHs and their early growth via accretion - when they are seen as Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) - remain unknown. To address this challenge, we must identify low luminosity and obscured z>6 AGNs, which represent the bulk of early SMBH growth. Sensitive X-ray observations are a unique signpost of accretion activity, uncontaminated by star formation proc…
X-ray evidence for ultra-fast outflows (UFOs) has been recently reported in a number of local AGNs through the detection of blue-shifted Fe XXV/XXVI absorption lines. We present the results of a comprehensive spectral analysis of a large sample of 42 local Seyferts and 5 Broad-Line Radio Galaxies (BLRGs) observed with XMM-Newton and Suzaku. We detect UFOs in >40% of the sources. Their outflow velocities are in the range 0.03-0.3c, with a mean value of ~0.14c. The ionization is high, in the range logxi~3-6 erg s^{-1} cm, and also the associated column densities are large, in the interval ~10^{2…
A new model for coevolution of galaxies and supermassive black holes (SMBH) is presented that is physically based. The evolutionary track starts with an event that triggers a significant starburst in the central region of a galaxy. In this model, the main SMBH growth takes place in post-starburst phase fueled by recycled gas from inner bulge stars in a self-regulated fashion on a time scale that is substantially longer than 100Myrs and at a diminishing Eddington ratio with time. We argue that the SMBH cannot gorge itself during the starburst phase, despite the abundant supply of cold gas, beca…
We want to explore the geometrical structure and mutual interactions of the innermost components of the broad line radio galaxy (BLRG) 3C 215, with particular interest in the accretion and ejection mechanisms involving the central supermassive black hole (SMBH). We compare these observational features with the ones of the RQ Seyfert 1 galaxies. Investigating their differences it is possible to understand more about the jet launching mechanisms, and why this phenomenon is efficient only in a small fraction of all the AGNs. Using high quality data from a $\sim60$ ks observation with XMM-Newton, …
We estimate the relative contributions of the supermassive black hole (SMBH) accretion disk, corona, and obscuring torus to the bolometric luminosity of Seyfert galaxies, using Spizter mid-infrared (MIR) observations of a complete sample of 68 nearby active galactic nuclei from the INTEGRAL all-sky hard X-ray (HX) survey. This is the first HX-selected (above 15 keV) sample of AGNs with complementary high angular resolution, high signal to noise, MIR data. Correcting for the host galaxy contribution, we find a correlation between HX and MIR luminosities: L_MIR L_HX^(0.74+/-0.06). Assuming that …
Black hole spin is a quantity of great interest to both physicists and astrophysicists. We review the current status of spin measurements in supermassive black holes (SMBH). To date, every robust SMBH spin measurement uses X-ray reflection spectroscopy, so we focus almost exclusively on this technique as applied to moderately-luminous active galactic nuclei (AGN). After describing the foundations and uncertainties of the method, we summarize the current status of the field. At the time of writing, observations by XMM-Newton, Suzaku and NuSTAR have given robust spin constraints on 22 SMBHs. We …
We investigate the dichotomy between jetted and non-jetted Active Galactic Nuclei (AGNs), focusing on the fundamental differences of these two classes in the accretion physics onto the central supermassive black hole (SMBH). Our aim is to study and constrain the structure, kinematics and physical state of the nuclear environment in the Broad Line Radio Galaxy (BLRG) PKS 2251+11. The high X-ray luminosity and the relative proximity make such AGN an ideal candidate for a detailed analysis of the accretion regions in radio galaxies. We performed a spectral and timing analysis of a $\sim$64 ks obs…
Revisiting the observation-theory confrontation in high-frequency QPOs:a new QPO in NGC 5506, intermediate mass black holes, and the crucial role of accretion state
In a hot accretion flow, the radiation from the innermost region of the flow propagates outward and heats the electrons at large radii via Compton scattering. It has been shown in previous works that if the radiation is strong enough, $L\ga 2%L_{\rm Edd}$, the electrons at the Bondi radius ($r_B\sim 10^5 r_s$) will be heated to be above the virial temperature thus the accretion will be stopped. The accretion will recover after the gas cools down. This results in the oscillation of the black hole activity. In this paper we show that this mechanism is the origin of the intermittent activity of s…
In addition to providing vital clues as to the formation and evolution of black holes, the spin of black holes may be an important energy source in the Universe. Over the past couple of years, tremendous progress has been made in the realm of observational measurements of spin. In particular, detailed characterization and modeling of X-ray spectral features emitted from the inner regions of black hole accretion disks have allowed us to probe the location of the innermost stable circular orbit and hence the spin. In this contribution, I will describe the Suzaku AGN Spin Survey, an on-going Cycl…
We analyzed the effects of a toroidal magnetic field in the formation of several magnetized accretion tori, dubbed as ringed accretion disks (RADs), orbiting around one central Kerr supermassive Black Hole (SMBH) in AGNs, where both corotating and counterotating disks are considered. Constraints on tori formation and emergence of RADs instabilities, accretion onto the central attractor and tori collision emergence, are investigated. The results of this analysis show that the role of the central BH spin-mass ratio, the magnetic field and the relative fluid rotation and tori rotation with respec…
Recent work on nearby AGNs has shown that X-ray variability is correlated with the mass and accretion rate onto the central SMBH. Here we present the application of the variability-luminosity relation to high redshift AGNs in the CDFS, making use of XMM-Newton observations. We use Monte Carlo simulations in order to properly account for bias and uncertainties introduced by the sparse sampling and the very low statistics. Our preliminary results indicate that BH masses span over the range from 10^5 to 10^9 solar mass while accretion rates range from 10^-3 up to values greater than 1, in unit of…
