We consider electronic transport through semiconducting nanowires (W) with spin-orbit interaction (SOI), in a hybrid N-W-N setup where the wire is contacted by normal-metal leads (N). We investigate the conductance behavior of the system as a function of gate and bias voltage, magnetic field, wire length, temperature, and disorder. The transport calculations are performed numerically and are based on standard recursive Green's function techniques. In particular, we are interested in understanding if and how it is possible to deduce the strength of the SOI from the transport behavior. This is a very relevant question since so far no clear experimental observation in that direction has been produced. We find that the smoothness of the electrostatic potential profile between the contacts and the wire plays a crucial role, and we show that in realistic regimes the N-W-N setup may mask the effects of SOI, and a trivial behavior with apparent vanishing SOI is observed. We identify an optimal parameter regime, with neither too smooth nor too abrupt potentials, where the signature of SOI is best visible, with and without Fabry-Perot oscillations, and is most resilient to disorder and temperature effects.
High electrical conductance molecular nanowires are highly desirable components for future molecular-scale circuitry, but typically molecular wires act as tunnel barriers and their conductance decays exponentially with length. Here we demonstrate that the conductance of fused-oligo-porphyrin nanowires can be either length independent or increase with length at room temperature. We show that this negative attenuation is an intrinsic property of fused-oligo-porphyrin nanowires, but its manifestation depends on the electrode material or anchor groups. This highly-desirable, non-classical behaviou…
Clean topological insulators exposed to a magnetic field develop Landau levels accompanied by a nonzero Hall conductivity for the infinite slab geometry. In this work we consider the case of disordered topological insulator nanowires and find, in contrast, that a zero Hall plateau emerges within a broad energy window close to the Dirac point. We numerically calculate the conductance and its distribution for a statistical ensemble of disordered nanowires, and use the conductance fluctuations to study the dependence of the insulating phase on system parameters, such as the nanowire length, disor…
Zero bias anomalies in topological nanowires have recently captured significant attention, as they are possible signatures of Majorana modes. Yet there are many other possible origins of zero bias peaks in nanowires, for example, weak localization, Andreev bound states, or the Kondo effect. Here, we discuss observations of differential conductance peaks at zero bias voltage in nonsuperconducting electronic transport through a 3D topological insulator nanowire. The zero bias conductance peaks show logarithmic temperature dependence and often linear splitting with magnetic fields, both of which …
We report the experimental observation of quantized conductance by Rashba bands at the surface of 50-nm Bi nanowires. With increasing magnetic fields along the wire axis, the wires exhibit a stepwise increase of conductance with as many as four distinct plateaus together with oscillatory thermopower. The observations can be accounted for by the increase of the number of propagating surface modes. The modes have very high mobility and are associated with Aharonov-Bohm interference around the perimeter consistently with theory of quasiballistic one-dimensional nanowires considering that Lorentz …
We present a complete numerical calculation and an experimental data analysis of the universal conductance fluctuations in quasi-one-dimension nanowires. The conductance peak density model, introduced in nanodevice research on [Phys. Rev. Lett. 107, 176807 (2011)], is applied successfully to obtain the coherence length of InAs nanowire magnetoconductance and we prove its equivalence with correlation methods. We show the efficiency of the method and therefore a prominent alternative to obtain the phase-coherence length. The peak density model can be similarly applied to spintronic setups, graph…
Ballistic electron transport is a key requirement for existence of a topological phase transition in proximitized InSb nanowires. However, measurements of quantized conductance as direct evidence of ballistic transport have so far been obscured due to the increased chance of backscattering in one dimensional nanowires. We show that by improving the nanowire-metal interface as well as the dielectric environment we can consistently achieve conductance quantization at zero magnetic field. Additionally, studying the sub-band evolution in a rotating magnetic field reveals an orbital degeneracy betw…
We develop a theory for the three-terminal nonlocal conductance in Majorana nanowires as existing in the superconductor-semiconductor hybrid structures in the presence of superconducting proximity, spin-orbit coupling, and Zeeman splitting. The key question addressed is whether such nonlocal conductance can decisively distinguish between trivial and topological Majorana scenarios in the presence of chemical potential inhomogeneity and random impurity disorder. We calculate the local electrical as well as nonlocal electrical and thermal conductance of the pristine nanowire (good zero-bias condu…

We identify the leading processes of electron transport across finite-length segments of proximitized nanowires and build a quantitative theory of their two-terminal conductance. In the presence of spin-orbit interaction, a nanowire can be tuned across the topological transition point by an applied magnetic field. Due to a finite segment length, electron transport is controlled by the Coulomb blockade. Upon increasing of the field, the shape and magnitude of the Coulomb blockade peaks in the linear conductance is defined, respectively, by Andreev reflection, single-electron tunneling, and reso…
We consider a simple conceptual question with respect to Majorana zero modes in semiconductor nanowires: Can the measured non-ideal values of the zero-bias-conductance-peak in the tunneling experiments be used as a characteristic to predict the underlying topological nature of the proximity induced nanowire superconductivity? In particular, we define and calculate the topological visibility, which is a variation of the topological invariant associated with the scattering matrix of the system as well as the zero-bias-conductance-peak heights in the tunneling measurements, in the presence of dis…
Majorana Zero Modes (MZMs) are prime candidates for robust topological quantum bits, holding a great promise for quantum computing. Semiconducting nanowires with strong spin orbit coupling offers a promising platform to harness one-dimensional electron transport for Majorana physics. Demonstrating the topological nature of MZMs relies on braiding, accomplished by moving MZMs around each other in a certain sequence. Most of the proposed Majorana braiding circuits require nanowire networks with minimal disorder. Here, the electronic transport across a junction between two merged InSb nanowires i…
We investigate gold-4,4'-bipyridine-gold single-molecule junctions with the mechanically controllable break junction technique at cryogenic temperature ($T=4.2\,\text{K}$). We observe bistable probabilistic conductance switching between the two molecular binding configurations, influenced both by the mechanical actuation, and the applied voltage. We demonstrate that the relative dominance of the two conductance states is tunable by the electrode displacement, whereas the voltage manipulation induces an exponential speedup of both switching times. The detailed investigation of the voltage-tunab…
We analyze theoretically electronic transport through a core-shell nanowire in the presence of a transversal magnetic field. We calculate the conductance for a variable coupling between the nanowire and the attached leads and show how the snaking states, which are low-energy states localized along the lines of vanishing radial component of the magnetic field, manifest their existence. In the strong coupling regime they induce Aharonov-Bohm-like conductance oscillations, which, by decreasing the coupling to the leads, evolve into well resolved peaks. These results show that the formation of sna…
Helical states can be measured through the observation of the reentrant behaviour, which is a dip in the conductance probed in semiconducting nanowires (NWs) with strong spin-orbit coupling (SOC) under the presence of an external perpendicular magnetic field. We investigate the effects of deformations in the electronic transport in NWs considering the coupling between different transverse modes. Within this approach, we show that the dip in the conductance of a NW is affected by the presence of a local constriction. Moreover, we find that the reentrant feature in the conductance can appear in …
In a recent high-quality experimental work on normal metal--superconducting nanowire junctions arXiv:1807.01940 (2018), strong anisotropic suppression of induced superconductivity has been observed in tunnel conductance measurements in the presence of applied magnetic field with variable orientation. Following this finding, we investigate theoretically the dependence of tunnel conductance on the direction of the Zeeman field in order to understand the operational mechanisms and to extract effective system parameters. Second, motivated by a generic discrepancy between experiment and theory, i.e…
Majorana zero modes can appear at the wire ends of a 1D topological superconductor and manifest themselves as a quantized zero-bias conductance peak in the tunneling spectroscopy of normal-superconductor junctions. However, in superconductor-semiconductor hybrid nanowires, zero-bias conductance peaks may arise owing to topologically trivial mechanisms as well, mimicking the Majorana-induced topological peak in many aspects. In this work, we systematically investigate the characteristics of zero-bias conductance peaks for topological Majorana bound states, trivial quasi-Majorana bound states an…
Semiconductor nanowires with strong spin-orbit coupling and proximity-induced s-wave superconductivity in an external magnetic field have been the most promising settings for approaches towards experimental evidence of topological Majorana zero-modes. We investigate the effect of tilting the magnetic field relative to the spin-orbit coupling direction in a simple continuum model and provide an analytical derivation of the critical angle, at which the topological states disappear. We also obtain the differential conductance characteristic of a junction with a normal wire for different tilting a…
We simulate the electron transport in vertical bi-layer nanowire which can be fabricated in molecular beam epitaxy process with lateral confinement potential formed by means of cleaved overgrowth or surface oxidization methods giving rectangular and smooth side confinement, respectively. In calculations we take into account interaction between charge carriers using DFT within local spin density approximation. If magnetic field is perpendicular to the wire axis, pseudogaps are opened in energy dispersion relation E(k) what in conjunction with spin Zeeman shift of spin-up and spin-down subbands …
The thermoelectric properties of quantum dot arrays (QDAs) embedded in nanowires connected to electrodes are studied theoretically in the Coulomb blockade regime. A Hurbbard-Anderson model is used to simulate the electronic contribution to thermoelectric proper- ties of a QDA junction system. The electrical conductance, Seebeck coefficient, and electron thermal conductance are calculated by both the Keldysh Green function method and the mean-field approach. The phonon thermal conductivities are calculated by using the equation of phonon radiative transfer method. In the Coulomb blockade regime…
We consider electrons in tubular nanowires with prismatic geometry and infinite length. Such a model corresponds to a core-shell nanowire with an insulating core and a conductive shell. In a prismatic shell the lowest energy states are localized along the edges (corners) of the prism and are separated by a considerable energy gap from the states localized on the prism facets. The corner localization is robust in the presence of a magnetic field longitudinal to the wire. If the magnetic field is transversal to the wire the lowest states can be shifted to the lateral regions of the shell, relati…
Motivated by recent experiments that report the almost-generic large-conductance peaks without very extensive fine-tuning, we propose an alternative mechanism through direct theoretical simulations that can explain the large zero-bias conductance peaks being generated on-demand in the nontopological regime in Majorana nanowires by satisfying the following three sufficient conditions: (i) strong potential disorder in the bulk of the nanowire, suppressing the topological regime; (ii) strong suppression of the disorder near the nanowire ends connecting to the tunneling leads, perhaps because of s…
We study longitudinal transport in Weyl semimetal nanowires, both in the absence and in the presence of a magnetic flux threading the nanowires. We identify two qualitatively different regimes of transport with respect to the chemical potential in the nanowires. In the "surface regime", for low doping, most of the conductance occurs through the Fermi-arc surface states, and it rises in steps of one quantum of conductance as a function of the chemical potential; furthermore, with varying flux the conductance changes in steps of one quantum of conductance with characteristic Fabry-Pérot interfer…
The characterization of helical states can be performed by checking the existence of the re-entrant behaviour, which appears as a dip in the conductance probed in nanowires (NWs) with strong spin-orbit coupling (SOC) and under perpendicular magnetic field. On the other hand, the experiment described in Ref. 1 observed the re-entrant behaviour in the absence of a magnetic field, which was explained through spin-flipping two-particle backscattering. We theoretically show that the observation of the re-entrant behaviour is due to a multi-channel scattering mechanism, which causes a reduction of t…
Motivated by the need to understand and simulate the ubiquitous experimentally-observed zero-bias conductance peaks in superconductor-semiconductor hybrid structures, we theoretically investigate the tunneling conductance spectra in one-dimensional nanowires in proximity to superconductors in a systematic manner taking into account several different physical mechanisms producing zero-bias conductance peaks. The mechanisms we consider are the presence of quantum dots, inhomogeneous potential, random disorder in the chemical potential, random fluctuations in the superconducting gap, and in the e…
The zero-bias peak (ZBP) is understood as the definite signature of a Majorana bound state (MBS) when attached to a semi-infinite Kitaev nanowire (KNW) nearby zero temperature. However, such characteristics concerning the realization of the KNW constitute a profound experimental challenge. We explore theoretically a QD connected to a topological KNW of finite size at non-zero temperatures and show that overlapped MBSs of the wire edges can become effectively decoupled from each other and the characteristic ZBP can be fully recovered if one tunes the system into the leaked Majorana fermion fixe…
We model a core-shell nanowire (CSN) by a cylindrical surface of finite length. A uniform magnetic field perpendicular to the axis of the cylinder forms electron states along the lines of zero radial field projection, which can classically be described as snaking states. In a strong field, these states converge pairwise to quasidegenerate levels, which are situated at the bottom of the energy spectrum. We calculate the conductance of the CSN by coupling it to leads, and predict that the snaking states govern transport at low chemical potential, forming isolated peaks, each of which may be spli…
We explore various aspects of magneto-conductance oscillations in semiconductor nanowires, developing quantum transport models based on the non-equilibrium Green's function formalism. In the clean case, Aharonov-Bohm (AB - h/e) oscillations are found to be dominant, contingent upon the surface confinement of electrons in the nanowire. We also numerically study disordered nanowires of finite length, bridging a gap in the existing literature. By varying the nanowire length and disorder strength, we identify the transition where Al'tshuler-Aronov-Spivak (AAS - h/2e) oscillations start dominating,…
The motion of an electron and its spin are generally not coupled. However in a one dimensional material with strong spin-orbit interaction (SOI) a helical state may emerge at finite magnetic fields, where electrons of opposite spin will have opposite momentum. The existence of this helical state has applications for spin filtering and Cooper pair splitter devices and is an essential ingredient for realizing topologically protected quantum computing using Majorana zero modes. Here we report electrical conductance measurements of a quantum point contact (QPC) formed in an indium antimonide nanow…
We report an experimental study of one-dimensional (1D) electronic transport in an InSb semiconducting nanowire. Three bottom gates are used to locally deplete the nanowire creating a ballistic quantum point contact with only a few conducting channels. In a magnetic field, the Zeeman splitting of the corresponding 1D subbands is revealed by the emergence of conductance plateaus at multiples of $e^2$/h, yet we find a quantized conductance pattern largely dependent on the configuration of voltages applied to the bottom gates. In particular, we can make the first plateau disappear leaving a first…
