We discuss a confining model for quark-antiquark system with a new color $SU_3$ gauge symmetry. New gauge transformations involve non-integrable phase factors and lead to the fourth-order gauge field equations and a linear potential. The massless gauge bosons have non-definite energies, which are not observable because they are permanently confined in quark systems by the linear potential. We use the empirical potentials of charmonium to determine the coupling strength of the color charge $g_s$ and find $g_s^2/(4π) \approx 0.2.$ We discuss Feynman-Dyson rules for the confining quark model, which involve propagators with poles of order 2 associated with new gauge fields. The confining quark model may be renormalizable by power counting and compatible with perturbation theory.
A quantum relativistic model is proposed to represent the confining potential of $c \bar{c}$ and $b \bar{b}$ mesons by using the Klein Gordon oscillator. We have solved the two-body problem obtaining the eigenvalues and the corresponding mass spectra, which fit very well with experimental data. We compare the results of our model with others obtained from different quark binding potentials.
Considering a QCD chiral symmetry breaking model where the gap equation contains an effective confining propagator and a dressed gluon propagator with a dynamically generated mass, we verify that the chiral symmetry is restored for a large number of quarks $n_{f}\approx 7-13$. We discuss the uncertainty in the results, that is related to the determination of the string tension ($K_{F}$), appearing in the confining propagator, and the effective gluon mass ($m_{g}$) at large $n_{f}$.
The light quark propagation in the confining vacuum, described by an (infinite) set of gauge-invariant vacuum correlators, is studied in detail. To keep gauge invariance at each step the system of light quark and heavy antiquark is considered, and the nonlinear equations are written explicitly for the quark propagator in the limit of large $N_c$. For the lowest (Gaussian) correlator the system is studied in various approximations, and the relativistic WKB method is used to demonstrate the scalar confining interaction of light quarks, which implies chiral symmetry breaking. The chiral condensat…
The Regge behaviour of the solutions of a Dirac hamiltonian describing a heavy quark-light quark system in high orbital angular momentum states is analyzed. It is found that the solutions of a scalar confining potential are physically admissible while those of a vector confining potential are not. It is argued that with a Dirac hamiltonian a scalar confining potential is preferred over a vector confining potential for any value of the orbital angular momentum.
By superposition of regular gauge instantons or merons, ensembles of gauge fields are constructed which describe the confining phase of SU(2) Yang-Mills theory. Various properties of the Wilson loops, the gluon condensate and the topological susceptibility are found to be in qualitative agreement with phenomenology or results of lattice calculations. Limitations in the application to the glueball spectrum and small size Wilson loops are discussed.
We treat baryons as bound states of scalar or axialvector diquarks and a constituent quark which interact through quark exchange. We obtain fully four-dimensional wave functions for both octet and decuplet baryons as solutions of the corresponding Bethe-Salpeter equation. Applications currently under investigation are: electromagnetic and strong form factors and strangeness production processes.
We discuss a confining model for charmonium in which the attractive force are derived from a new type of gauge field equation with a generalized $SU_3$ gauge symmetry. The new gauge transformations involve non-integrable phase factors with vector gauge functions $\om^a_μ(x)$. These transformations reduce to the usual $SU_3$ gauge transformations in the special case $\om^a_μ(x) = \p_μξ^a(x)$. Such a generalized gauge symmetry leads to the fourth-order equations for new gauge fields and to the linear confining potentials. The fourth-order field equation implies that the corresponding massless ga…
We study chiral symmetry breaking in QCD-like gauge theories introducing a confining effective propagator, as proposed recently by Cornwall, and considering the effect of dynamical gauge boson mass generation. The effective confining propagator has the form $1/(k^2+m^2)^2$ and we study the bifurcation equation finding limits on $m$ below which a satisfactory fermion mass solution is generated. Since the coupling constant and gauge boson propagator are damped in the infrared, due to the presence of dynamically massive gauge bosons, the major part of the chiral breaking is only due to the confin…
In this paper we study the breaking of chiral symmetry with non-confining power-like potentials. The region of allowed exponents is identified and, after the previous study of confining (positive exponent) potentials, we now specialize in shorter range non-confining potentials, with a negative exponent. These non-confining potentials are close to the Coulomb potential, and they are also relevant as corrections to the linear confinement, and as models for the quark potential at the deconfinement transition. The mass-gap equation is constructed and solved, and the quarks mass, the chiral angle a…
In a covariant model where constituent quarks and diquarks interact through quark exchange, the Bethe-Salpeter equation in ladder approximation for octet and decuplet baryons is solved. Quark and diquark confinement is thereby effectively parametrised by choosing appropriately modified propagators. Numerical results for the baryon masses are presented. In a second step electromagnetic, weak and pionic currents are coupled to the bound state according to Mandelstam's technique. The arising matrix elements are evaluated in a generalised impulse approximation and observable form factors are extra…
Recently we developed a numerical technique to compute chiral symmetry breaking at T=0 with different current quark masses m0, including the current quark masses of the six standard flavours u, d, s, c, b, t. We also fitted from Lattice QCD data the quark-antiquark string tension sigma dependence on temperature T. We now utilize sigma(T) to further upgrade the chiral invariant and confinement quark model to finite temperatures T =/= 0. We study the quark mass at finite T and obtain the corresponding chiral crossover at T=Tc. The quark mass critical curve has a shape similar, but not identical,…
Recently, the BESIII collaboration has reported numerous measurements of various $D_{(s)}$ meson semileptonic decays with significantly improved precision. Together with similar studies carried out at BABAR, Belle, and CLEO, new windows to a better understanding of weak and strong interactions in the charm sector have been opened. In light of new experimental data, we review the theoretical description and predictions for the semileptonic decays of $D_{(s)}$ to a pseudoscalar or a vector meson. This review is essentially an extended discussion of our recently published results obtained in the …
$Q\bar{Q}$ potential is studied in the SU(2) gauge theory. Based on the nonlinear gauge of the Curci-Ferrari type, the possibility of a gluon condensation $\langle A_μ^+A_μ^-\rangle$ in low-energy region has been considered at the one-loop level. Instead of the magnetic monopole condensation, this condensation makes classical gluons massive, and can yield a linear potential. We show this potential consists of the Coulomb plus linear part and an additional part. Comparing with the Cornell potential, we study this confining potential in detail, and find that the potential has two implicit scales…
We perform an exact computation of the grand partition function of a model of confined quarks at arbitrary temperatures and quark chemical potentials. The model is inspired by a version of QCD where the perturbative BRST symmetry is broken in the infrared, while perturbative QCD is recovered in the ultraviolet. The theory leads, even at tree level, to a quark mass function compatible with nonperturbative analyses of lattice simulations and Dyson-Schwinger equations. In spite of being defined at tree level, the model produces a non-trivial and stable thermodynamic behaviour at arbitrary values …
We consider a charged scalar particle $χ$ of mass around 375 GeV charged under both $SU(3)_c$ and a new confining non-abelian gauge interaction. After pair production, these interactions confine the exotic scalar into non-relativistic bound states whose decays into photons can explain the 750 GeV diphoton excess observed at the LHC. Taking the new confining group to be $\mathrm{SU}(2)$, we find $χ$ must carry an electric charge of $Q \sim [\frac{1}{2}, 1]$ to fit the data. Interestingly, we find that pair production of the scalars and the subsequent formation of the bound state dominates over …
In the framework chiral SU(3) quark model, the baryon spectra within the band of $N\leq 2$ are studied, and the effect of the confining potential in different configurations, namely the $Δ$-mode and Y-mode are compared. In the same way, the baryon spectra in the extended chiral SU(3) quark model, in which additional vector meson exchanges are introduced, are also calculated. It is shown that a reasonable baryon spectrum in the chiral SU(3) quark model can be achieved no matter whether the $Δ$-mode or the Y-mode confining potential is employed. In the extended chiral SU(3) quark model, several …
The homogeneous Lippmann-Schwinger integral equation is solved in momentum space by using confining potentials. Since the confining potentials are unbounded at large distances, they lead to a singularity at small momentum. In order to remove the singularity of the kernel of the integral equation, a regularized form of the potentials is used. As an application of the method, the mass spectra of heavy quarkonia, mesons consisting from heavy quark and antiquark $(Υ(b\bar{b}), ψ(c\bar{c}))$, are calculated for linear and quadratic confining potentials. The results are in good agreement with config…
We study the drag force of a relativistic heavy quark using a holographic QCD model with conformal invariance broken by a background dilaton. We analyze the effects of chemical potential and confining scale on this quantity, respectively. It is shown that the drag force in this model is larger than that of $\mathcal{N}=4$ supersymmetric Yang-Mills (SYM) plasma. In particular, the inclusion of the chemical potential and confining scale both enhance the drag force, in agreement with earlier findings. Also, we discuss how chemical potential and confining scale influence the diffusion coefficient.
It is possible that at low temperatures and large density there exists a confining matter with restored chiral symmetry, just after the dense nuclear matter with broken chiral symmetry. Such a phase has sofar been studied within a confining and chirally symmetric model assuming a rigid quark Fermi surface. In the confining quarkyonic matter, however, near the Fermi surface quarks group into color-singlet baryons. Interaction between quarks leads to a diffusion of the quark Fermi surface. Here we study effects of such diffusion and verify that it does not destroy a possible existence of a confi…
We use a lattice of nonlocal confining solitons to describe nuclear matter in the Wigner-Seitz approximation. The average density is varied by changing the size of the Wigner-Seitz cell. At sufficiently large density quark energy bands develop. The intersection of the filled valence band with the next empty band at a few times standard nuclear density signals a transition from a color insulator to a color conductor and is identified with the critical density for quark deconfinement.
We examine N=1 supersymmetric gauge theories which confine in the presence of a tree-level superpotential. We show the confining spectra which satisfy the 't Hooft anomaly matching conditions and give a simple method to find the confining superpotential. Using this method we fix the confining superpotentials in the simplest cases, and show how these superpotentials are generated by multi-instanton effects in the dual theory. These new type of confining theories may be useful for model building, since the size of the matter content is not restricted by an index constraint. Therefore, one expect…
The Schwinger-Dyson formalism is used to check the consistency of instanton model solutions for the quark propagator with recent models of confining gluon propagators. We find that the models are not consistent. A major discrepancy is the absence of a vector condensate in the instanton model that is present in the solutions with nonperturbative confining gluons.
Confining configurations are introduced into the standard instanton vacuum model. This drastically improves theoretical properties of the vacuum: instanton size density $d(ρ)$ stabilizes at $ρ\sim 0.2 fm$, all chiral effects are formulated in a gauge-invariant way and quarks are confined. An interesting interplay of chiral and confining dynamics is observed; for the realistic values of parameters the Georgi-Manohar picture emerges with chiral radius $R_{ch}\sim ρ\sim 0.2 fm$ much less than confining radius $R_c\sim$ hadron radius $\sim 1 fm$. In the limit $R_{ch}\ll R_c$ the chiral mass $M_{ch…
Four-dimensional asymptotically-free large $N$ gauge theories compactified on $S^3_R \times \mathbb{R}$ have a weakly-coupled confining regime when $R$ is small compared to the strong scale. We compute the vacuum energy of a variety of confining large $N$ non-supersymmetric gauge theories in this calculable regime, where the vacuum energy can be thought of as the $S^3$ Casimir energy. The $N=\infty$ renormalized vacuum energy turns out to vanish in all of the large $N$ gauge theories we have examined, confirming a striking prediction of temperature-reflection symmetry.
We show a constantly accelerated quark as a string solution of the Nambu-Goto action, which is embedded in the bulk background dual to the $\cal{N}$ $=2$ supersymmetric confining Yang-Mills theory. The induced metric of the world sheet for this string solution has an event horizon specified by the fifth coordinate. By an extended Rindler transformation proposed by Xiao, we move to the comoving frame of the accelerated quark-string. Then we find that this horizon is transferred to the event horizon of the bulk and the causal part of the accelerated quark is transformed to a static free-quark in…
We show that theories in the confining, free magnetic, and conformal phases can break supersymmetry through dynamical effects. To illustrate this, we present theories based on the gauge groups $SU(n)\times SU(4)\times U(1)$ and $SU(n) \times SU(5) \times U(1)$ with the field content obtained by decomposing an $SU(m)$ theory with an antisymmetric tensor and $m-4$ antifundamentals.
The confining quark matter (CQM) model, in which the confinement and asymptotic freedom are modeled via the Richardson potential for quark-quark vector interaction and the chiral symmetry restoration at high density is described by the density dependent quark mass, is extended to include isospin dependence of the quark mass. Within this extended isospin-dependent confining quark matter (ICQM) model, we study the properties of strange quark matter and quark stars. We find that including isospin dependence of the quark mass can significantly influence the quark matter symmetry energy, the stabil…
Properties of extra weak bosons are discussed in a gauge model based on SU(2)_LXU(1)_YXSU(2)'_L. The physics of SU(2)'_L respects the duality in the Higgs and confining phases, where massive gauge bosons in the Higgs phase are equivalently represented by composite vector bosons in the confining phase below the scale of SU(2)'_L . interactions for SU(2)'_L-singlet composites induced in the confining phase can be generated by nonlinear interactions of the four Fermi type respecting SU(2)_LXU(1)_Y, which create quarks, q_i^A (A=r,g,b; i=1,2), leptons, l_i, vector bosons, V_mu^(a) (a=1,2,3) and th…
We address the old difficulty in accommodating the scalar quark-antiquark confining potential together with chiral symmetry breaking. We develop a quark confining potential inspired in the QCD scalar flux tube. The coupling to quarks consists in a double vector vertex. We study the Dirac and spin structure of this potential. In the limit of massless quarks the quark vertex is vector. Nevertheless symmetry breaking generates a new scalar quark vertex. In the heavy quark limit the coupling is mostly scalar. We solve the mass gap equation and find that this potential produces spontaneous chiral s…
We present a numerical method to compute path integrals in effective SU(2) Yang-Mills theories. The basic idea is to approximate the Yang-Mills path integral by summing over all gauge field configurations, which can be represented as a linear superposition of a small number of localized building blocks. With a suitable choice of building blocks many essential features of SU(2) Yang-Mills theory can be reproduced, particularly confinement. The analysis of our results leads to the conclusion that topological charge as well as extended structures are essential elements of confining gauge field co…
The elastic electromagnetic form factors in the space-like region and valence quark distribution functions for the K+ meson are calculated using the confining Nambu-Jona-Lasinio model with the help of the proper-time regularization scheme, which simulates quark confinement. In this model framework, the dynamics information on the nonperturbative aspects is obtained from quark propagators and bound state amplitudes via Bethe-Salpeter equations. We found that the results on the kaon form factors and valence quark distribution functions are qualitatively in excellent agreement with the existing k…
In this paper we discuss a quantity that can be derived from the hadronic spectrum - the ratio between the color hyperfine splitting of a K meson and that of a Sigma baryon. It will be shown that within the constituent quark model this ratio depends only on the ratio of contact probabilities within the hadrons. We compute this ratio assuming several phenomenological potential models, and show that the best agreement with data is obtained from the Cornell potential - Coulomb + linear. Thus the analysis of color hyperfine interactions corroborat es the preference for the Cornell potential based …
We study the nucleon and diquarks in a non-local Nambu-Jona-Lasinio model. For certain parameters the model exhibits quark confinement, in the form of a propagator without real poles. After truncation of the two-body channels to the scalar and axial-vector diquarks, a relativistic Faddeev equation for nucleon bound states is solved in the covariant diquark-quark picture. The dependence of the nucleon mass on diquark masses is studied in detail. We find parameters that lead to a simultaneous reasonable description of pions and nucleons. Both the diquarks contribute attractively to the nucleon m…
Hadron spectra and other properties of quark systems are studied in the framework of a non-relativistic spin-independent phenomenological model. The chosen confining potential is harmonic, which allowed us to obtain analytical solutions for both meson and baryon (of equal constituent quarks) spectra. The introduced parameters are fixed from the low-lying levels of heavy quark mesons. The requirement of flavor independence is imposed, and it restricts the possible choices of inter-quark potentials. The hyper-spherical coordinates are considered for the solution of the three-body problem.

The structure of the Abelian-projected (AP) flux tube in SU(2) gauge theory in the maximally Abelian gauge is studied by applying the Hodge decomposition to the Abelian Wilson loop. It is shown that the profile of the AP flux tube has the same structure as the classical flux tube solution in the dual Abelian Higgs model, which is composed of a Coulombic and a solenoidal electric field linked by monopole supercurrent.
We consider the phase structure of a pure compact U(1) gauge theory in four dimensions at finite temperature by treating this system as a perturbative deformation of the topological model. Phases of a gauge theory can be investigated from the phase structure of the topological model. The thermal pressure of the topological model has been calculated, from which its phase structure can be derived. We have obtained phases of a compact U(1) gauge theory. Moreover, the critical-line equation has been explicitly evaluated.
The pseudoparticle approach is a numerical method to approximate path integrals in SU(2) Yang-Mills theory. Path integrals are computed by summing over all gauge field configurations, which can be represented by a linear superposition of a small number of pseudoparticles with amplitudes and color orientations as degrees of freedom. By comparing different pseudoparticle ensembles we determine properties of confining gauge field configurations. Our results indicate the importance of long range interactions between pseudoparticles and of non trivial topological properties.
We generalize a recently proposed confining relativistic density-functional approach to the case of density dependent vector and diquark couplings. The particular behavior of these couplings is motivated by the non-perturbative gluon exchange in dense quark matter and provides the conformal limit at asymptotically high densities. We demonstrate that this feature of the quark matter EoS is consistent with a significant stiffness in the density range typical for the interiors of neutron stars. In order to model these astrophysical objects we construct a family of hybrid quark-hadron EoSs of cold…
Quark-hadron duality is an interesting and potentially very useful phenomenon, as it relates the properly averaged hadronic data to a perturbative QCD result in some kinematic regions. While duality is well established experimentally, our current theoretical understanding is still incomplete. We employ a simple model to qualitatively reproduce all the features of Bloom-Gilman duality as seen in electron scattering. In particular, we address the role of relativity, give an explicit analytic proof of the equality of the hadronic and partonic scaling curves, and show how the transition from coher…
In this two part series a chiral confining model of baryons is used to describe low--lying negative parity resonances $N^*$, $Δ^*$, $Λ^*$ and $Σ^*$ in the mean field approximation. A physical baryon in this model consists of interacting valence quarks, mesons and a color and chiral singlet hybrid field coexisting inside a dynamically generated confining region. This first paper presents the quark contribution to the masses and wave functions of negative parity baryons calculated with an effective spin--isospin dependent instanton induced interaction. It does not include meson exchanges between…
We present an analytic nonperturbative solution of the Yakubovsky equation for tetraquark states in the case of equal separations and energies, and demonstrate a direct connection between the tetraquark confinement potential and the temporal gluon propagator. To this end we employ a leading-order heavy quark mass expansion of the Coulomb gauge QCD action, and use the dressed two-point functions of the Yang-Mills sector only. As a result we find a bound state energy that rises linear with distance and a string tension twice as large as in a $q\bar{q}$-system.
We explore the consequences of an equation of state (EOS) obtained in a confining Dyson-Schwinger equation model of QCD for the structure and stability of nonstrange quark stars at finite-T, and compare the results with those obtained using a bag-model EOS. Both models support a temperature profile that varies over the star's volume and the consequences of this are model independent. However, in our model the analogue of the bag pressure is (T,mu)-dependent, which is not the case in the bag model. This is a significant qualitative difference and comparing the results effects a primary goal of …
We explore the possible low energy phases of the confining non-supersymmetric $SU(5)$ chiral gauge theory with three generations of fermions in the $(10+\bar{5})$ representations. This theory has the same fermion and gauge matter content as the simplest Georgi-Glashow grand unified theory of the Standard Model and has an $SU(3)\times SU(3)\times U(1)$ global symmetry. Using 't Hooft anomaly matching, most attractive channel, and soft SUSY breaking approaches, we outline a number of possible consistent low energy vacua including one with a remnant $SO(3)\times U(1)$ symmetry that is analogous t…
The potential due to a system of three static quark (3Q) is studied using SU(3) lattice QCD at finite temperature with Polyakov loops operators. We focused our analysis on the large distance properties of the 3Q potential and found a good fit behavior to the Y-string model formula. In addition to the linearly confining term proportional to the minimal length of the Y-string, we observed that the subleading logarithmic term, which is proportional to Dedekind eta function and accounts for the Y-string's quantum fluctuations, is necessary to reproduce the quark anti-quark string tension of the co…

The baryon octet and decuplet masses and Bethe-Salpeter vertex and wave functions are calculated in the ladder approximation to the quark exchange between a scalar or axialvector diquark and a constituent quark. These functions reflecting full Lorentz covariance are given in terms of an expansion in Gegenbauer polynomials. In the rest frame of the baryon, a complete partial wave decomposition of the Bethe-Salpeter wave function is performed. The confinement of quarks and diquarks is implemented via a parametrisation of the corresponding propagators. We also discuss some aspects of the momentum…
We study the gauge boson propagator in the dual Abelian Higgs theory which confines electric charges. The confinement is due to dual Abrikosov-Nielsen-Olesen strings. We show that the infrared double pole 1/(p^2)^2 in the propagator is absent due to the confinement phenomenon. Instead, specific angular singularities signal the eventual set in of the confinement. These angular singularities are a manifestation of the confining strings.
We analyze the leading Lyapunov exponents of SU(2) Yang-Mills field configurations on the lattice which are initialized by quantum Monte Carlo simulations. We find that configurations in the strong coupling phase at finite temperature are substantially more chaotic than in deconfinement.
We discuss the transformation of the QCD temporal-gauge Hamiltonian to a representation in which it can be expressed as a functional of gauge-invariant quark and gluon fields. We show how this objective can be realized by implementing the non-Abelian Gauss's law, and by using the mathematical apparatus developed for that purpose to also construct gauge-invariant quark and gluon fields. We demonstrate that, in the transformed QCD Hamiltonian, the interactions of pure-gauge components of the gauge field with color-current densities are replaced by nonlocal interactions connecting quark color-cha…
The Dyson-Schwinger equations arising from minimizing the vacuum energy density in the Hamiltonian approach to Yang-Mills theory in Coulomb gauge are solved numerically. A new solution is presented which gives rise to a strictly linearly rising static quark potential and whose existence was previously observed in the infrared analysis of the Dyson-Schwinger equations. For the new solution we also present the static quark potential and calculate the running coupling constant from the ghost-gluon vertex.
We consider the soft wall model for a heuristic holographical modelling of a confining gauge theory and discuss how the introduction of a (constant) magnetic field influences the (de)confinement phase structure. We use the entanglement entropy as a diagnostic tool in terms of the length of an entangling strip geometry. Due to the anisotropy introduced by the magnetic field, we find that the results depend on the orientation of the strip relative to the field. This allows to identify a richer, anisotropic, interplay between confinement and a magnetic field than possibly can be extracted from a …
The emergence of flux-tubes as the distance is increased between a quark and an antiquark is explored in a three-dimensional confining gauge theory using the gauge/gravity duality. We delineate the shape of the flux-tube corresponding to the classical open string in the bulk and further explore the fluctuation in its thickness induced by the fluctuation of the open string along the radial direction in the bulk. The relationship between the intrinsic shape of a flux-tube and its effect on the heavy quark potential is also discussed.
The Dual Meissner Effect description of QCD in the confining region provides $\frac{1}{q^4}$ behaviour for the gluon propagator and involves the dual gluon mass $m$ as a parameter. This is used in the Schwinger-Dyson equation for the quarks in the infrared region to exhibit chiral symmetry breaking for light quarks. Using the light quark condensate as input, the dual gluon mass is determined and its importance in showing the asymptotic free behaviour of the extrinsic curvature coupling in the rigid QCD string is discussed.
This is the content of a set of lectures given at the XIII Jorge Andre Swieca Summer School on Particles and Fields, held in Campos do Jordao, Brazil in January 2005. They intend to be a basic introduction to the topic of gauge/gravity duality in confining theories. We start by reviewing some key aspects of the low energy physics of non-Abelian gauge theories. Then, we present the basics of the AdS/CFT correspondence and its extension both to gauge theories in different spacetime dimensions with sixteen supercharges and to more realistic situations with less supersymmetry. We discuss the diffe…
